I think Ren chose this keyboard because of his obsession, passion and purity of sound in the instruments he chooses. So spending money for this is more important to him than any other material possession. Your other question as to why he chose the arrangement of this piece, my theory is it's both intuition and intention. An example of intuitive came from his explanation of how this piece came to be. Playing around the piano with no intention and the song just came out, practically writing itself. The emotion and the flow is intuitive. The intention is his attention to detail as well as the perfectionist side of him, that strives for excellence. 😮
I like the way you think. Ren onstage with that piano will be epic! And I hope that I’ll be there to witness it live ❤️
Ren has been saying for awhile that on his next album he will be going back to his roots...more singing, guitar and piano. He had a piano in his flat in Brighton and he would post videos on Instagram with him playing it. I'm guessing that he partly got this one for portability reasons since he doesn't have a permanent home base right now. Based on a few things he has posted on his Patreon, his next album is going to be great, as usual. 🙂 I can't wait!

Ren has this piano for more than a year now, soon after he arrived in Calgary. I checked, and I've downloaded an IG story of him playing it in his apartment on 13. March 2023.
I expect the next album to be much more based on instruments and less production, because he just said it several times. 😊 Unfortunately, there is still no tour this year, though seeing him live is definitely on my bucket list. Maybe there will never be a tour, and I understand why, but hey, let's dream....

And much of the information you gave here is some of what I'm looking for in a reaction. New sub here. I'm going now to see what other pearls of wisdom 😆I might pick up from them. Well considering also the fact Ren has already said he's moving to L.A. soon, all of this is a strong indication that Ren plans on doing a lot of live engagements. Ranging from his Live Streaming, interview performances and potentially some live gigs, if we're lucky some pop-up Busking? Whatever it is, I'm thoroughly excited for Ren and look forward to Ren's next album.
Interesting observation about the piano, Dean. Could Ren perhaps be thinking about a future concert? I wrote this before you said it! 😀 Exciting to speculate!

I had a Yamaha 88 weighted key portable piano (I gave it to my nephew when he started taking lessons) and they make really incredible instruments. Mine was no where near as expensive as this one (which I saw listed at $3200) but it still sounded really nice.
This discussion about the keyboard was thoroughly researched and discussed in a way that I could understand. Thank you for doing a deep dive into it. Your sleuthing skills and enthusiasm bring me a smile.
Whether it is on loan or not; it does have a beautiful tone and I hope it brings him enjoyment in playing.
Surely we all are looking forward to the days when he can offer live concerts. May your supposition come true!
I think your comments on portability and quality are right on. There is no secret that Ren is ready to start performing on stage when his treatment is complete. He is moving to LA to produce his new album and to hopefully busk in Venice beach!
REgarding this song, Don't belIeve he does anything by accident. The Variation in volume would be for expression. He may not have the words for Callum, but he has all the emotion! Not only the piano but his entire body becomes his instrument. Ren has such a powerful emotive skill and connection to music! He has said it is the closest thing to God that he knows and it has been his constant support and companion through all the years of illness. This will always be where the money and the energy goes.

Great insight, but just to point out out. Ren in any final take doesn't make mistakes. Because he suffers from ADHD, every thing has to be exactly as he wants. He practices hours on end until he can do it in his sleep.
Example!, Ren said "Money Game Part 1" took 180 takes, before he was happy😊
He does sometimes have to compromise for the best over-all take, though, when they don't have the chance to record that many takes. (He talks about a different Tales take having something he loved in one scene, but it wasn't the best overall take so he chose the one we know.) He's great at choosing the best take even if it isn't perfect. (Animal Flow acoustic being the best example!) 😊

I think he has the portable piano as he wants to create a timeless singer-songwriter album next (which he has been working on for a year). He needed something that he could use in Canada and take outside to film videos on (there were a few clips from one of the first times Sam went over there, and this was filmed a while ago too).
Yamaha loaned him the grand for Money Game 3 and had it transported to the set. Not sure if they also loaned him this one or if he bought it.
Apparently this one is also on loan :) He also played it on For Joe. Lots of info in the comments people have shared :)
I notice he used the same Yamaha in Calgary when he performed 'For Joe'. I believe this was filmed in LA, hence as you mentioned, portability might have played a part in his choice. Interesting and different review

@@LoutTsu wow my mistake. I could have sworn it was in the LA or Vegas area. The landscape reminded me more of the southern rockies rather than the mid north of British Colombia. Do you know the actual location?
@@wadadli4sun Outside Drumheller, about 1.5 hours from Calgary. Don't know this personally, but I've seen it stated in quite a few comment sections.
Bel Development, who is from Alberta, said it's The Hoodoos in Drumheller, Alberta, northeast of Calgary. Sure looks like a fascinating place to visit.

He played it 9mths ago in For Joe. That was in Calvary. Not sure where he is now :)
He is still in callgery and has the keyboard on a loan from yahama.
@@theguywithabow He's still in treatment in Calgary, but leaving for two weeks in NY! Filming a video with Webby, and who knows what else - his whole team is going with him!

This was performed and filmed in June 2023 mate... 9 months ago, Don't know if that helps your theories or not ? The Yamaha wasn't as expensive as you might think 😏😏
