Comparing her original diy to her manufactured product was an excellent idea. When I first saw this shampoo, I was wondering if someone would compare a diy black soap shampoo to the melanin brand. Great video and review, you didn't disappoint.
I love how thorough and unbiased your reviews are. You really out there speaking from a place of integrity and I appreciate that. I feel like a lot of people feel a certain way about criticizing an OG like Whit, but you really show that you can be critical while giving people their dues.
I don't think people feel a certain way about criticizing her, I think the problem is that we have literally begged her for years to sell her DIYs. So it's a bit different for a company that comes out trying to sell to us. We have higher expectations from brands that we aren't familiar with. But with Whit, people were willing to try anything she put out that worked for her. She manufactured it in a way to make it safe for mass production and prolong the life for mass use so unfortunately it's not the same. And I don't blame her one bit if the product doesn't work out for everyone because most of us just wants to see if something that worked for her will work for us. We cut our losses for being fooled to think it will😂😂 because she never tried to sell it. she's just giving the people something close to what they wanted
@@nonalolagirl 💯 agree. Love @Naptural85 that much to support her and try her products at least once because she has given us so much helpful content and tips for years for free. If I could donate to her I would because she totally deserves it.😊💖
@@chalabrooks5433 that's so true. So many wanted her to set up a POBox to send her gifts and to donate like other UA-camrs have and she refused all of it. She's so humble and real. Instead she worked 6yrs to begin getting us what we wanted! And I will support her to the end.

I like this shampoo I don’t feel like it’s a must in my stash (I love to DIY) I like that it clarifies I don’t depend on a shampoo to be moisturizing it’s there to cleanse my hair not condition it but to each is own. Edit: I forgot to add melanin hair care is about to be sold at ULTA 😆
BIG UPS SHEREA! I think it is helpful to note that your version of the DIY is different because of the oils you used to replace the oils you didn’t have. Now this review however... needs 1 million likes and more!!! Including the same amount of subscribers. The reason why is because of the amount of detail, non biased POV, and more that it has. We all know sherea don’t strip for no one unless she have to lol. Because of that, and you still liked, it says a Ton about the product. I personally prepoo and clarify every week, and my hair thrives. But sis... you used that masters degree for this one lol. Even if you weren’t a fan, I’d still love this review. Wonderful job sis! I’ve been waiting for your honest review and here it is 🤣 Thank you for comparing the 2 different formulas because I am getting tired of people complaining about the freaking price 🤦🏾♀️ I’ve personally made the DIY black soap shampoo before and spent way more than $20 to buy all the ingredients plus the time it took to make it. With that being said, I will continue to purchase this shampoo over and over again (especially if it’s on sale) because I love the consistency and ingredients much better plus I didn’t have to make it myself 🤷🏾♀️ Am I saying that I use $20 shampoos every wash day? Hell nah! But on the days I feel like treating myself, you best believe I do 💁🏾♀️👸🏾

I really like the melanin twist cream and oil (have reordered it several times). I just tried the shampoo and I like it (it really cleans my hair and has good ingredients).
I love how you say “OIL” 💛 me personally Black soap is too strong for my hair and skin, but I bought this for my brother because he loves black soap and he loves this product! I’ve tried shea moistures the JBCO shampoo and their Charcoal one and I cannot lol I had to give them away. Congratulations Naptural85 on expanding and thank you for this video sis I loved every minute of it!! 💛
That DIY shampoo is the best shampoo I've ever used. My hair gets clean and defines my curls (and I'm still trying to figure out how). I won't get that one because I don't need it, but I love her leave in and conditioner.
I made her DIY black soap shampoo and it was extremely awesome on my whole family's hair. I used the Alafia liquidblqck soap and just added the oils to it. Heavenly
Whitney’s diy has changed the game for me, I use it in my hair and my fiancé’s locs. I also was surprised that the commercial shampoo was so thick. I’ve now fallen in love with thinner shampoos. It get through my hair so easily. I will try this shampoo during Black Friday.
Thorough review. I love that you compared it to her DIY. I can’t wait to try melanin shampoo, I’m totally not a DIYer lol. Shower scene prompt this question: do you use a drain cover to catch any shed hair in the shower so it doesn’t go down your drain?
I love a clarifying shampoo! I got the shampoo and I love it! It does clean my hair, but it didn't make my hair feel like hay like the Alikay Naturals AFB shampoo. I love all her products! I would say the leave-in and the oil are my favorites. I was making her diy shampoo, but I fell off. I loved this comparison video!
I ordered the shampoo and two oils. I cant wait to get mine! That oil is the most unique one I've ever tried. I just want shampoo to cleanse my hair, I'm here for the clarifying. Great review!
SheRea DelSol that’s interesting because I hear everyone raving about it and that made me think I was doing something wrong because I don’t like the oil at all. I especially hate the smell. I was watching your video about using products for different things if you don’t like them.. Any suggestion for the oil? I don’t want to use it on my skin because I don’t like the smell Actually, so far, my hair doesn’t like any of her products so I won’t be purchasing the shampoo I try to support, but I can’t just throw money away🤷🏽♀️
I actually use DoduSun ABS bar as a shampoo. Never looked back. My hair loves it. I could never quite find a shampoo that cleaned my hair (I is a greasy baby) and I never liked the stripped feeling or itchy scalp I would get from regular shampoo. Only costs £1.25 in the UK. Very moisturising too.
Whitney is for real a true OG. I adore her. She's such a sweetie. and you in this video, you do so a great job of breaking everything down. I love your high attention to detail. xo
I hope she got the terms of her divorce worked out first!!! Hopefully, Phillipe won’t try to take her to the bank. But, I think her sister is a lawyer, so hopefully she’s protected.
Love the shampoo and how it removes build up without stripping with the added oils. Only used very little to cleanse so this bottle will last a loonnnng time!
Thank you for the honest review. Naptural85 is the queen mother of the natural hair community. I have been following her for more than 8 years. I have copies and enhanced her recipes and used them to create my own. Although I will not be purchasing this product for several reasons, I feel that you really did a quality review in comparing the original diy recipe to the manufactured shampoo. Thank you again.
I feel like i might be the only one who posted a review where i didn’t hate this product... lol I’m reviewing it over 3 weeks so maybe things will change, but for now i had no complaints! Hear it’s stripping everyone’s hair. Absolutely love the comparison to a DIY
@@SheReaDelSol haha yea my mistake, I submitted that before I finished the video. careless. I'm just confused that I didn't find it stripping! maybe I will on Friday. not that i'm trying to conform lol i feel what i feel. will see. nice video! commending you again on all your DIYs. I don't have the energy.
Which Liz Taylor are y’all talking about? She was an actress starting in the 1940s. She was absolutely gorgeous when she was young. Just stunning. The original comment was a nice compliment.
I haven’t tried the shampoo yet, but Ive been using her DIY shampoo since 2016. She really made a statement with that DIY. I cut my hair in 2018 and confidently grew it back out knowing I could go back to the DIY. Don’t sleep on naptural85
I'm glad you did the comparison. I love my DIY ABS shampoo. I like that I can tweak it to my taste on demand. It's quite a spa experience. Honestly her twist elongating cream was a flop for me.....but her DIY recipe for the cream was bomb. There's something to her DIYs that are just better, but I will probably buy something from her again just to show support for the queen mother! I would like to see her come out with some type of sweet potato deep condish in the future....because that DIY video was bomb!
I LIVE for her diy African black soap shampoo! I've made about 4 batches so far for me and my boyfriend. If I didn't have an abundance of ingredients to keep making the shampoo, I'd buy it.
It so so funny when I hear people call Whitney and OG. When I went natural and start watching UA-cam videos, she wasn’t even on the platform yet. I remember when she started!
Lol yep I went natural back when motowngirl and fotki were on the scene. That was when it was still a little underground and we were literally stumbling our way through. Love Whitney though
Yesssss!! THIS is what I needed!!! This is EXACTLY what I needed!! A side by side comparison!! Because I make and use her abs shampoo on my daughter's so hearing people say it was stripping and drying, I was like wha? Huh?? Cuz her recipe is MOISTURIZING! Yes abs is a natural clarifying agent which is why she made sure to add stuff to make it moisturizing. Awwww! Im so proud of her but I'll continue making my daughters her original recipe.
Her DIY method & recipe is very similar to what I've been making for 20+ years. It is very cleansing but I always prepoo to counter the striping factor. TFS & Blessings
BE CAREFUL OF BLACK SOAP'S HIGH PH. Nothing you have can reduce the ph unless it disturbs the consistency. That shit damaged my hair over time. Who knows, if you are currently suffering frizziness, splits or high porosity, it might be the soap. Whitney's may be ph balanced due to it being commercial but I know that once raw black soap's ph drops, it turns to a gooey mess and it no longer cleans so you can't diy balance it. If you are high porosity, stay away from diy black soap
@@nicostat17 My hair became very porous. Like it would go from dripping wet to almost dry as soon as I step out of the shower. Then i had midshaft splits for days. Multiple on each strand. Then my hair was always dry and very frizzy, even when wet. I never knew I had any definition till I stopped using it and chopped some off. Then I had a growth plateau I always added honey and oils and stuff plus tried to balance with ACV but it was still too harsh of a ph swing for me. It has a ph of 10 even with dilution
Thank you for letting this be known about black soap. Whitney’s leave in is oh balanced with a ph of 4.7 so that would be a good option to use after her black soap shampoo. :)
Great review! That melanin shampoo is deffo not for weekly use! After two consecutive uses, my hair was crispy and needed extensive steaming sessions to force the moisture back in! Deffo going to try the diy!! Thanks girl
I know when you make it yourself it better. Since she has to mass-produced, it not going to be the same, and who knows how the heat and stuff mess with it too. I feel later on she will have more products for different people. I feel like she put out something that covers the central issue of the majority. I know my hair does not like all the oils, but I think it works better than a lot of the other stuff. I also know hair porosity, thickness, curly pattern, and environment plays a big part in how it is going to work.
I just used this last week on my hair (her commercial product) and I thought it was a 8/10. I initially got the tingling but I didn't think it was very clarifying (to me). I use clarifying shampoos for my low porosity hair because it gives me good grounds for my growth retention. Moisturizing shampoos cause me a lot of build up. Everyone is different but I don't think I would purchase again, I would rather make my own for that price 😅.
What!!! Go head then Miss Natural85...I'm DIY basically all of my haircare...BUT...I am a big supporter of black owner home grown...especially black women. I have purchased all of her products as well as her gear. I was going to pass on this one though bc I make a black soap/clay wash diy...but as always you have swayed me...Ugh...I will not go to waste I hair two natural daughters. Thanks for the honesty review.
This video comparison was a great idea and makes more sense than the others I saw on UA-cam. I will be trying the diy version, thanks to you. Love the video❤️
YAY I can't wait to get this shampoo for my scalp issues!! I too love sulfate shampoos b/c I need my hair and scalp to be squeaky clean so I'm sure I'll love this as much as the other products! Thanks for the great review :)
You are giving us “Fancy Schmancy” in this video!!! I love your glow and look SheRea!!! I am so glad you reviewed this product. I was contemplating making this purchase but decided to wait on a few of my fave UA-camrs to review it. I have only tried one black soap that’s moisturizing and it’s EcoSlay Peppermint Schnapps. I’ll stick with it for now. #teambootycracklength
Just wondering if you could try the shampoo again following the directions. Would it feel as stripped? I'd love to see that video where you compare you shampoo method vs Melanin method on your hair? I know you only shampoo once a month but maybe keep this in mind for future content. Thanks
I just subscribed. 😂💖Thank you for the great review and comparing the commerical product versus the DIY version. I went to order the Melanin products the other day on the website and this Black soap shampoo, the leave in, and whatever else I needed was sold out. I was like damn it.😂😂 I'll have to come back. @Naptural85 has given us so much content and tips for years for free so I feel I must try her products and support her at least once to see how they work for my hair. She's serious about the content she puts out to us so feel she did the same to get us closer to what she uses but for commerical use. If I could donate to her I would because she deserves it.😊💖
I thought I was trippn. My hair felt stripped also. It was very clean. But, it was not moisturizing. I like her line. It's just the shampoo that is a little extra for my hair. Peace and Blessings!
@SheRea I actually made a DIY mixing both your aloe/cactus pre-poo with Nap's ABS basic black soap shampoo using aloe juice spearmint tea instead of plain water. It was the first time I EVER felt my hair get moisturized from being cleansed...I didn't even know what feeling you were talking about before then😅. So thank you for that. When my melanin shampoo finally comes in🤞🏾🤞🏾, based on these reviews, I think I'm gonna alternate weeks between her commercial shampoo and my Franken-DIY😅😅. But ya girl is DEFINITELY not a DIY queen (I made it THE DAY before she announced the shampoo launch🙄🤦🏾♀️), so I'm grateful to have it premade once I go through all my DIY shampoo😊.
@@SheReaDelSol Thank you for helping me better understand my hair and what I can do to help her grow in healthily. I think the thing about natural hair journeys (or at least mine) is that it just starts out being about hair, but at some point your hair becomes a reflection of your self acceptance as a whole. As such, learning how to better love and care for my hair, and spending the time and money to apply that knowledge, is an extension of learning to better love and accept and care for my whole, natural self. So again, thank you for doing what you do - helping to facilitate self love from the crown on down☺️🤗.
Thanks for sharing
I love the Melanin oil...need to purchase a new one so I'll pick up the shampoo as well. Your hair is flourishing😍 Great comparison video!
Thanks so much honey
$30 girl I can buy the ingredients and make that for years years
That’s where I stand but I know a lottttttt of people will not DIY
It’s not $30 though... it’s $19.89 for 16oz of shampoo.
@Tasha roberts - I completely agree!
@@ElmotypeSwag she stated that she included shipping in the total cost in case people didn't order additional products to qualify for free shipping
@@ElmotypeSwag With tax and shipping it comes to about $30 though....
I think in general a DIY will always be best...for a treat I’d definitely buy the Melanin shampoo 😍
Whitney is for real a true OG. I adore her. She's such a sweetie. and you in this video, you do so a great job of breaking everything down. I love your high attention to detail. xo
Thanks so much!!
It’ll be at ULTA soon guys!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yes I mentioned that 🙌🏾
It's available at Ulta now.
That's what's up 🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️
I'll wait to try Melanin when it comes to Ulta.I hate wait time for delivery
I’m so excited to see Melanin Haircare in Ulta! 👏🙌
Same
I hope she got the terms of her divorce worked out first!!! Hopefully, Phillipe won’t try to take her to the bank. But, I think her sister is a lawyer, so hopefully she’s protected.
Antrelise Gantt Oh NO! I had no idea! I second your comment.
Love the shampoo and how it removes build up without stripping with the added oils. Only used very little to cleanse so this bottle will last a loonnnng time!
Thanks for watching!
I just started doing DIY and I love it. My daughter and her friends love it too
I bet!
SheRea DelSol lol
Thank you for the honest review. Naptural85 is the queen mother of the natural hair community. I have been following her for more than 8 years. I have copies and enhanced her recipes and used them to create my own. Although I will not be purchasing this product for several reasons, I feel that you really did a quality review in comparing the original diy recipe to the manufactured shampoo. Thank you again.
I appreciate you!
In my opinion this shampoo is so good no co wash nor prepoo is needed. I so need to go back to this!
I feel like i might be the only one who posted a review where i didn’t hate this product... lol I’m reviewing it over 3 weeks so maybe things will change, but for now i had no complaints! Hear it’s stripping everyone’s hair. Absolutely love the comparison to a DIY
I ain’t hate it lol. I just don’t love clarifying anything lol
Everyone hair was stripped but maybe you’re just different
Thank-you for taking the time to make and compare the two. ❤️
I appreciate that 💕
Ok, my sis looking like a black Liz Taylor!
💁🏾♀️💁🏾♀️💁🏾♀️
Exactly!
Why you do her dirty like that?? 🤣🤣 she looks young and gorgeous not like something from the crypt. Liz looked musty old 🤣🤣
Araweelo Spirit You ain’t right! Lol!!!😂😂😂 In my defense I meant she looked elegant like Liz did. But you’re funny! Lol!!!😂😂😂
The DIY is great
I'm glad you did the comparison.
I need to try that one
I LIVE for her diy African black soap shampoo! I've made about 4 batches so far for me and my boyfriend. If I didn't have an abundance of ingredients to keep making the shampoo, I'd buy it.
Thanks for watching hon
@@SheReaDelSol you're welcome! I love your videos 😍😍😍
Jessica L I really do appreciate that
I love to make mines but I’ll buy it to support her business. Supporting black businesses out here!
🙏🏾🙏🏾
It so so funny when I hear people call Whitney and OG. When I went natural and start watching UA-cam videos, she wasn’t even on the platform yet. I remember when she started!
She is for the people who went natural in 2009-2011. She’s been around for over ten years
Lol yep I went natural back when motowngirl and fotki were on the scene. That was when it was still a little underground and we were literally stumbling our way through. Love Whitney though
Thanks for your creative approach on this honest review!
Thanks for appreciating the hard work
I would do the same
What an honest straight review sis... 👏🏾 Yes, most of us have mad respect to the Queen of Natural Hair in my humble opinion. Shalom family
I cant wait till I release my african black soap shampoo this month for Lavish Curls beauty! Good review
Just subscribed. Will keep an eye out
Much success to you
SheRea DelSol thank you!
Curltalk Honestea thank you!
Her DIY method & recipe is very similar to what I've been making for 20+ years. It is very cleansing but I always prepoo to counter the striping factor. TFS & Blessings
Thanks for watching love
I typically don't DIY but loved seeing this comparison. I think you were successful in your quest to be objective 🤗
Thank ya!
I love this review, but somehow you've convinced me to go back to making this diy recipe again.
Worth it!
TFW!
In what way did it damage your hair?
@@nicostat17
My hair became very porous. Like it would go from dripping wet to almost dry as soon as I step out of the shower.
Then i had midshaft splits for days. Multiple on each strand.
Then my hair was always dry and very frizzy, even when wet. I never knew I had any definition till I stopped using it and chopped some off.
Then I had a growth plateau
I always added honey and oils and stuff plus tried to balance with ACV but it was still too harsh of a ph swing for me. It has a ph of 10 even with dilution
Thank you for letting this be known about black soap. Whitney’s leave in is oh balanced with a ph of 4.7 so that would be a good option to use after her black soap shampoo. :)
@@Icyjessy1 Apple cider vinegar is also terrible for hair too, and may be part of the reason you destroyed your hair.
Great review! That melanin shampoo is deffo not for weekly use! After two consecutive uses, my hair was crispy and needed extensive steaming sessions to force the moisture back in! Deffo going to try the diy!! Thanks girl
You look beautiful!!! You are giving us class and sophistication!
Yassss👑👠
Thanks you boo!
I going to support cause I love the leave-in so the shampoo will be a good duo for wash day
Makes sense
You look fabulous, SheRea! I love this look! 👑 💎
Thanks queen
Excellent video! I am excited that Melanin will be in Ulta 🛍
Thanks much hon
I know when you make it yourself it better. Since she has to mass-produced, it not going to be the same, and who knows how the heat and stuff mess with it too. I feel later on she will have more products for different people. I feel like she put out something that covers the central issue of the majority. I know my hair does not like all the oils, but I think it works better than a lot of the other stuff. I also know hair porosity, thickness, curly pattern, and environment plays a big part in how it is going to work.
Definitely
You look so pretty in this video. I kept looking at your eyebrows and your skin. You have a have beautiful golden glow. Thx for the review!❤️
Awww thank you lovely
There are some real life hair gurus in these comments showing love. I love the comment section today!!!
🥰🥰
I just used this last week on my hair (her commercial product) and I thought it was a 8/10. I initially got the tingling but I didn't think it was very clarifying (to me). I use clarifying shampoos for my low porosity hair because it gives me good grounds for my growth retention. Moisturizing shampoos cause me a lot of build up. Everyone is different but I don't think I would purchase again, I would rather make my own for that price 😅.
I feel you!
We stan Whitney!
I’m a new subscriber and I just ordered the Melanin shampoo and maybe after its gone, I'll try the DIY version. Thanks, again, for the info.
Welcome to the fam!
This video comparison was a great idea and makes more sense than the others I saw on UA-cam. I will be trying the diy version, thanks to you. Love the video❤️
Thanks for watching love
YAY I can't wait to get this shampoo for my scalp issues!! I too love sulfate shampoos b/c I need my hair and scalp to be squeaky clean so I'm sure I'll love this as much as the other products! Thanks for the great review :)
Thanks for watching love
You are giving us “Fancy Schmancy” in this video!!! I love your glow and look SheRea!!!
I am so glad you reviewed this product. I was contemplating making this purchase but decided to wait on a few of my fave UA-camrs to review it.
I have only tried one black soap that’s moisturizing and it’s EcoSlay Peppermint Schnapps. I’ll stick with it for now.
#teambootycracklength
Thanks lovely!! I felt like being a rich auntie lol
Just wondering if you could try the shampoo again following the directions. Would it feel as stripped? I'd love to see that video where you compare you shampoo method vs Melanin method on your hair? I know you only shampoo once a month but maybe keep this in mind for future content. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Great idea to compare to her original recipe. The commercial version is going to be different, of course, so it was good to show how.
Yup!!
If I could donate to her I would because she deserves it.😊💖
She’s definitely done a lot for the community
..."I'm fancy" does it for me! However, 👏🏽 to you for your 👏🏽 to Whitney 😊
🥰🥰🥰
I thought I was trippn. My hair felt stripped also. It was very clean. But, it was not moisturizing. I like her line. It's just the shampoo that is a little extra for my hair. Peace and Blessings!
Thanks for watching love
Very thorough and detailed review. Thanks
Thanks much hon!
Thanks SheRea for ur honest input...lookin good gurl
Thank you boo
Your DIY sounds amazing. Thanks so much for watching
Also, my family is from Jamaica, so it especially makes my heart swell to see my Caribbean sisters doing big things out here in these UA-cam streets✊🏾❤.
CDEJC Thanks for your thoughtful comment. All the best ❤️
Hi sherea, thanks for the review! I was wondering, why do you infuse your neem oil w/ turmeric??
I use it on my face to remove makeup. Tumeric is good for lightening dark marks
Your hair is really growing 😍
We love to see it
I used to take natural black soap bar , break it down, put it in a container and add water, but the next day it was liquid black soap. I did this for years for my skin.
Chyna Me yup I mostly use it on my skin
Super thorough and honest review! Your hair is so pretty and so are you!
Thank you very much!
First off you look stunning in your thumbnail...thank you for this review. It was very thorough and your hair looked amazing before and after this product. I have to refresh my memory on your previous MELANIN hair care products, but I got the sense that it was just okay for you.
I have not seen a review from Nap85 yet...Thank you!
You are exactly right!
I love your review precise, and you did your research in comparison. I prefer diy products they usually work better in my hair.
Thanks for watching lovely
Very interesting review. For me the mutli-use oil and the leave-in conditioner are my Melenin holy grails. The shampoo just arrived i6m the mail Saturday and I got my hair done in the salon Saturday so it wi be 3-4 weeks before I get to try it for myself. Thans for sharing.
Thanks for watching
Your reviews are always on point and your content is excellent. I love clarifying shampoos so I will be checking out the Melanin Shampoo.
Awww thanks!
You look RADIANT sis!!
Thank you sis!
Hey girl!! 😍 thanks for the review!! I love a good lather 🧼 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾. So happy for Ms. Whitney!!!
No problem girl!
I’m not a DIY girl but that price of this shampoo is a lot. I don’t splurge on shampoos. But thank you for showing the DIY!! You look pretty as well.
Thanks lady
This was such a well put together video! Out of the sea of reviews for this shampoo, I really appreciate your thoroughness 💕 Also you look so beautiful!
Thanks so much! I worked extra hard on this one
Also…. I found out yesterday that if you put your diy African black soap in one of those foaming pump dispenser, it is so much easier to apply.
Makes so much sense
only black soap shampoo i have ever used was alikay and its my fav!!
I know people love that one!
Can’t wait to try it out for myself. Thanks for the honesty review! ❤️✊🏾
no problem hon
