True Hong Kong Fooey Hanna Barbara was 1970s but in production, only ran 18mo or so. 1974-1976. I thought it ran 5-6 seasons. 📺

I remember watching this when it first aired and thinking the animation reminded me of Marvel Superheroes' style. Not a whole lot of action but enough camera tricks and moving mouths to give it life. Your commentary on that aspect of the series sort of backs that up. It was like the Marvel show, just given an artistic upgrade via Doug Wildey.

This is quickly becoming my favorite channel. I remember watching this series on Saturday morning. My clearest memory was laughing at an ape driving in a pickup truck listening to a song on the radio with the lyrics, "I'm going humanoid over you".

I was older than the average kid. I was 16 in 1975. I remember the show well. The animation was sub-par because this was during the Dark Ages of American Animation that started were Warner Brothers closed Termite Terrace, their animation studio as a cost-cutting measure. I think this was due to Hanna-Barbera's dominating the market with their cheaper animation.
The Apes didn't have airplanes of their own. In fact, the airplane they had, a WWII vintage P-40 Warhawk was found by Ape Archeologists and restored to flying condition with the purpose of capturing humans with a cargo net slung under the plane. I know because this was my favorite episode.

I loved the ape's franchise, and i remember this cartoon being shown very irregularly on uk TV,btw i did read that the reason that the gorillas had jeeps and trucks was that they were easier to animate than horse's

Does anyone remember the comic book seriesKamandi: The Last Boy on Earth which was a direct inspiration (or ripoff depending on your perspective) of the Planet of the Apes. The difference was that in addition to apes many other species also had their own territories and fought among themselves. The main character as a young boy was clearly meant to appeal to the comic book audience of which I was one who loved both Planet and this series in tandem.

Great video review! HUGE Return fan! I love that cartoon. I remember watching it back in 75 when I was just in the 1st grade. I remember in the 90's when the Sci-Fi channel re-aired the series on Sunday mornings. That was the first time I had watched the show since childhood. Then in 2006 I got the dvd set. Just love it. Watched it a dozen times over, plus 2. ;) Like I said, a huge fan. I make my own custom Mego Apes based on the cartoon. When I start my youtube channel, I will spotlight them and a playset I'm building. Great channel and keep up the good work.

I liked this cartoon when I was a child. Many of my friends did not but I think you explained perfectly the reason why. The stilted, limited animation style was sort of a let down to some but I enjoyed that lushness it had the same as I enjoyed those classic Jonny Quest cartoons that now I know have a connection due to the great Doug Wildey. I haven't seen them in a long time but just like you do everything else you instill in me the desire to seek them out. I can't wait to hear your take on the legendary Jonny Quest cartoon. Thank you

I was 12 when this came out and I wasn’t interested in it then. Like now, I had a problem with the timeline that Charlton Heston doomed us to with blowing up the planet.
They could have tried explaining that only the New York area was blown to bits and not the entire planet, allowing for more stories, just not any of the same apes or characters… but that probably was over anyone’s head.
Watching the show many years later, I hated the idea of the apes using vehicles and airplanes. These were the workings of humans which the apes considered beneath them. Ape city had virtually no technology in the first movie, why would they now not only have it, but embrace it?
I’m glad this cartoon only had the one season, it would have ruined the movies.

So, the first cartoon episode finds Nova, wearing Brent's dog tags, and she sheds a tear when asked where Brent is. And she speaks, without guttural grunting. So, that puts the show AFTER Taylor and Brent, but somehow BEFORE Taylor blows everything up... And, the ship said "NASA", with a variation of the NASA "meatball"...

As a 1970's kid, this was my first contact with the Apes franchise. Then I discovered the Live Action show and last the movies. I really liked the TV show better.
Funny thing is that the apes had jeeps in the animated show while they only had horses in the live action. I guess animating a Jeep is cheaper than a horse, eh?

    • @willmfrank
      @willmfrank 5 місяців тому

Oh yeah...A motor vehicle needs only one cel for the body and two or three for the rotating wheels; a horse can get away with one cel for the body, but needs a whole series for the head, neck and legs...and they're a lot more work than a blurry wheel.

DFE was well known for using distinct art style to help cover over their lowest of the low budget animation. It was the 70's and animation budgets had cratered. They are most famous for The Pink Panther Cartoons.
In the 1980's they would become Marvel Productions. And give us such classics as Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, GI Joe a Real American Hero and of course Transformers.

    Great episode, Dan !
DePatie Freleng (pronounced Dee Patty Free Ling) were the geniuses behind classic cartoons like Pink Panther, Inspector Clouseau, The Ant and the Aardvark, and other greats. They traditionally had a relatively high-quality animation on those characters.... But Doug Wildey's art style was so detailed that they couldn't adapt it to fully rendered animation, so they utilized "Limited Animation " which utilized individual elements being animated against a static background of character plate. Usually, mouths, eyes, one arm, and usually a walk cycle for each character that would use the same 12 to 24 frames and loop them for walking lasting several seconds.
Limited animation gradually took over classical television animation by the early 80s until studios started farming out animation to Japanese animation studios.

As a six-year-old Apes Kid in 1975, I was SO pumped for the new Saturday morning show. And then I started watching it; I was *so* bored halfway through the first episode; I desperately wanted to go outside and play but I felt that would somehow be betraying my Apes bona fides. And once I saw the apes driving jeeps and using telephones, Cornelius and Zira in the same timeline as Urko, “Nova” and “Brent” interacting with the new astronauts…even as a six-year-old I knew it was a piece of garbage. I appreciate it more today (and today we could easily excuse it as being an “alternate timeline”), but when you annoy and alienate a six-year-old primed and ready to go on this show, you know you’ve completely missed the mark.

I agree I excitedly tuned in that morning in 1975 and was utterly bored beyond words. Even watched again a few years ago and it had not improved. I Was spoiled at the time by reading the very exciting marvel magazines planet of the apes comics.

HEY DAN, As i recall Johnny Quest had minimal motion animation like some anime shows as did Clutch Cargo and Space Angel.
Id like to see a feature on movies like Enemy Mine and Robinson Cruesoe on Mars sometime soon.

Even if Doug Wilding had watched Escape/Conquest/Battle, I don't see how he would have drawn from them for this cartoon. The attraction for us kids was APES! Talking apes! Gun-toting apes! I can't imagine that they'd want to have the cartoon go back to the 1970s, where Cornelius and Zira were the only apes on the show. They had enough trouble holding their interest as it was.
    PS - Great review, thanks!

I think those studio executives would have changed their minds if Dan Monroe was around to talk at them. Kinda the 'Bill Brasky', defender of popular culture. Thanks, Dan.

Although I preferred the live-action tv series, the animated series did have surprisingly mature scripts which compensated for the "limited" animation. There was that steadfast story arc which one would never expect in a Saturday morning cartoon (except for Land of the Lost). As for the ending, I never regarded it as a cliff-hanger but just a note of uncertainty upon how the Ape populace would react to the truth about their planet's history upon seeing "A Day at the Zoo". The fact that this series ended on such a note only made it stand it for me even more. It was a good effort although watered down a bit because no violence was allowed but still a conscious attempt to tell a decent sf story.
