The sabre gel crossfire that is ~1.5" dia x 4.5" T, is great. Big enough that it's inconvenient, but I would clip it on the front of my shirt or vest while on a walk, so super easy/quick access. It performed well on 2 dogs that came at me. Mugger fogger seems really good but it's bigger.
@@iliasgm6081 His tests of other pepperball products would suggest it probably isn't that effective. Pava (pepperball powder) just doesn't have the stopping power of capsaicin/OC. It's an irritant but doesn't really seem to affect the eyes and respiratory system as much.

3 main types of OC: 1) Cone/Fog pattern - wide pattern, don’t have to aim precisely, most effective. However can be blown back by wind and, if used inside a building, will eventually make room temporarily uninhabitable. 2) Stream - all shown in video are stream. The downside is it takes time (not much, but still time) to aim it, sometimes on a moving target. 3) Gel/foam - takes a long time to work, have to aim, & only useful in hospitals or where you can’t expose innocents. I’m a retired LEO and used the first two types numbers of times. I highly recommend cone/fog (like Fox Cone pattern) for LE or serious situations (not firearms…the only response to a firearm is another firearm). Still, for general day to day I carry a POM or Saber stream. That way I have some non-lethal but I’m not planning to be in a situation. I would never recommend foam/gel unless you’re in a hospital, senior citizen residence, etc. Hope this helps.
Good analysis. And a question for you. The fog/cone is easier to hit with, but isn't it also the most likely to blow back on you in a breeze due to the dispersion? That would seem to be a factor as well.
@@brianwatson4119 Yes. Cone OC saved my bacon at least once because it’s quicker to use and takes effect sooner. However, it’s very susceptible to being blown back by wind and, if used indoors, you and everyone else will get some. That’s why, for general use, I carry POM or Saber Stream. In situations where I can’t carry my pistol, I carry a stream OC AND a Fox cone OC.
I recommend the POM pocket clip version. It clips on the pocket of your pants and sits inside the pocket and when you need to draw it will be in the correct orientation. Instead of fumbling around in your pocket, purse, keychain, etc. Game changer.

I've been using Sabre products for over 40 years, As an Ex-LEO back in the early 80s, I can say from experience that Sabre products are IMO The best available and I highly recommend them, Among those type products, I have the 3-1 quick release key chain version and the Crossfire Gel and the Papa Bear, The Model# M-120L Police Magnum 3-1 Spray, All of these were recently purchased, {With the Gel you want to hit the eyes first and go ear to ear horizontally and then the nose and mouth} The spray is conical so you aim for the face and spray vertically, The eyes will close involuntarily and it will be very difficult to breathe, And it also has Psychological effects, fear and anxiety, The key chain spray says 10ft go with 5-6, The gel 18ft go with 10-14 ft, Sabre uses {High Performance Liquid Chromatography} HPLC It is a technique in analytical chemistry used to separate, identify, and quantify each component in a mixture, The orange smell you spoke of is most likely used as a solvent, So with the oleoresin capsicum being bad, Now you add CS Military Tear Gas for extra burn, And believe me this stuff is Wicked, I've been subscribed to your channel for about a year or so but don't reply often, Stay Safe. 👍
@@safetysense1015 Sounds like you are well protected, If you need a longer range product, The Gel works very well and you don't get as much atomization if used indoors or as much blowback in windy conditions.
Love this. I've seen videos like this before but they primarily focused on the product in the can, not necessarily on the delivery. This was enlightening.
Hey Mike have you guys thought to do a video on OC/pepper spray recovery? When I went through the police academy we had people trying the dumbest stuff to get past the spray. Milk, no more tears baby shampoo etc... The only thing I thought worked at all was some emergency eye wash someone decided to bring that they got from CVS. Great video as always. Keep it up!
The most effective thing will be a constant stream of water, to get it away. With the baby shampoo it should work just a bit better. The milk would only help temporarily, you can't keep up the flow like with water from the tap
I think cause oc spray is an oil, dish soaps that break down oil such as dawn will probably be one of the most effective long term. Milk might cool it temporarily but to get it out of your System faster you would have to wash out the oils
What makes pepper spray work is capsaicin concetrate, which is an oil. Anything that breaks down oils is what you want. I make a lot super hot pepper sauces with reapers scorpions, and ghost peppers (about 50-60% potency of police pepper spray) and when I get that shit on my face the only thing that helps is dishsoap and water. I would imagine its the same for pepperspray.
I just recently got pepper spray so this was very helpful in expectations and how realistically effective they are. It’s good to know you approve of pepper spray as I’m not quite ready to get a gun so I feel it’s a good option for now. Keep it up 💪🏼
I love how Mike got distracted with spraying the stream,s and forgot that he was hosing out irritant while doing so. Great video as always Mike, looking forward to the next one!
I carry Pom, and I like it because it's small, concealable, and I can turn the belt clip any way I want. It goes in my pocket the same way every time and I pull it out the same way every time. I've had trouble with sprays that didn't allow you to adjust the clip in relation to the nozzle.
This is by far my favorite channel on UA-cam right now. Real self defense advice is extremely difficult to find. I feel like we found it here fellas ❤️
I like the POM with the belt clip for its compact size and easy concealment. I can deep conceal inside my front pants pocket or clip it to the edge of a pocket similar to how I carry a flashlight or folder knife. The big flaw with the POM plastic clip is the fact that it does not grip the pants pocket fabric with enough friction to hold it in place. It's constantly at risk of falling off and getting lost, especially when you sit down in a chair. The flaw is easily addressed by attaching a strip of rubber no-slip tape to the body of the sprayer, under where the clip rests. The rubber tape provides plenty of friction to hold it securely for pocket carry. I used the kind of pebbled rubber no-slip tape typically applied to bathtubs. I chose not to use the sandpaper-like abrasive gun grip tape I have because it would tear up the pants fabric too much.
Love your pepper spray videos. My test just posted with Sabre Red really impressed me. I got more volume out of the tiny pocket sized EDC than I expected. It's a great option.
Sabre RED has a max strength TACTICAL PEPPER GEL WITH HOLSTER it is 1.8 oz vs the 0.54 oz (more than 3 time the amount of liquid) of the winning spray in this videos testing. The Tactical Pepper Gel sprays up to 18 ft vs 10 ft for the winning spray, and it is less likely to blow back in the users face if there is a a breeze or wind. This works great to carrying on your person, but I keep a 9.2 oz canister of Sabre Frontiersman Max strength bear spray in my car for those special road rage POS. After the non-lethal it is send them to Jesus time.
I had this (I believe-I know it was Sabre RED gel), and when I had to use it DRIPPED down on my hand.@@chrisdaniel1339 It still sprayed, but I was not pleased at having a burning red-stained hand while I was fleeing an assault. That's why I switched to POM (stream, not a spray or gel, and clear)-it also didn't drip on my hand when I had to use it on someone.
This was a great video and quite helpful. I never thought about telling everyone that they need to get two. I've always just so I can tell my peeps which one. But that's great advice.
Hey Mike - I know it would be a glutton-for-punishment affair, but a video on the effecacy of the various sprays - higher / lower percentage of the OC component, First Defense, Sabre, POM, Fox Labs to see which spray is more likely to stop someone's aggression toward you or make it harder for them to fight. Maybe a Houston Jones collab, since he likes engaging in punishing behaviour.
I'm a law enforcement training instructor. I've been sprayed many times so I can give you my quick thoughts. I've been sprayed with sprays as low as .2% MC and as high as 1.4% MC. Most pepper sprays used by police agencies come in at 1.3%. In my opinion, I can't tell the difference between 1.3% and 1.4% when getting sprayed. They are both super hot. However, I can tell a difference in the effects of a stream vs fogger. Fogger works faster, causes me to cough more and is way worse. Mace contains CS in their formula. That's why it has that orange smell. I've been sprayed with OC/CS mixtures before and I don't think they work better than straight OC. If your carrying spray for personal protection, POM is way hot enough. If your looking for a bigger police size can, Sabre Red, Defense Technology and FOX are the three brands that are used by most police agencies here in the US. As far as stopping power, fogger is king. However, everybody reacts different when getting sprayed. Some people panic and others don't. Some people have instant effects and some take a couple of seconds before the spray kicks in. Either way, as someone who has sprayed many people in my LE career, it almost always works.
Ive used many types of pepper sprays and sprayed many people and the best ive used was Fox Labs Foam. It flys so far and hits so hard and activates pretty quickly.
Thanks for demonstrating the different types. I like your choice. I have a Sabre that's also good for emergency seat belt removal and emergency car window breaker.
this was great. John over at ASP has me sold on POM, but you got me reconsidering the Sabre flip top. Another thing that helps is knowing if there's water trainers to use which both POM and Sabre appear to have so that's good.
The problem with product placements is that they can sway opinions away from objective functionality that has been illustrated in videos including this one. Long story short, POMs suffer from poor ergonomic issues, and I see that as an unnecessary problem when Saber does not have the same issue. Ideally, self defense tools should be easy to index, without you having to look at it, presumably because you are going to be too busy defending yourself. That is objectively more important to me than pretty packaging and brand recognition simply because they sponsor a popular UA-cam channel.
I find the POM to be quite ergonomic, and I've used both Sabre RED and POM to defend myself. Also, the Sabre RED (gel) DRIPPED ON MY HAND, which I was not pleased with.@@Pouncer_Fox
I have carried Sabre for years ( i buy a new one every year or so ) i am glad to see it works well. I haven't tested it like that. Thanks for the content 👍
I like POM because it's so easy to carry, especially if your used to carrying a tactical style flashlight. If you put a stripe of Talon Tape down the side, it gives you great traction pulling it out of your pocket.
Thank you for answering the questions we all have which is the best. Average people don't have the money to spend just to test pepper spray. So thank you for giving us the knowledge on which direction to go in.
POM is the hands down winner. great *er*gonomics. and the bottom half can be spun so it is ready to go whether right hand or left. with a tiny bit of practice it can be employed in an instant. i carry it every day and have given it to friends and family.
I carry POM because John at Active self protection recommended it. Belt clip style and I keep it in my hand pointed out ready to use in transitional spaces. Thanks for the video. Very informative.
We use the POM pepper spray w/clip and it's been a good product when used while we lived in California. To make it a little easier for orientation, we simply added a little raised sticker bump to the front so when we grab it out of our pocket or my wife from her purse, we can feel that bump and we know which way to point and fire it.
I was about to purchase POM, but thanks to this demonstration and pointing out that its almost too sleek in design, I think I will go with the Sabre for EDC then Fox as a back up for the purse and home.
The post office issues us "Back off" dog repellent. I used it on a pit bull mix that came at me the other day. At about 10 feet I hit the dog in the eyes, and nose. The dog immediately put his tail between his legs and backed off. I know dog spray isn't mace, but they're both a capsasin spray.
PLEASE REVIEW SAP GLOVES/TACTICAL GLOVES! As a total pedestrian they are the only self defense tool I have used in real situations and they gave me a massive edge. They protect your knuckles, add mass to your punch, increase the hardness of your hand, support your wrist, etc. If you even barely know how to throw a punch you could Maul an equal opponent that is bare knuckles. They also allow you to still grapple with both hands. THEY CHECK ALL YOUR BOXES MIKE JUST TRY THEM!
H2H, the best self defense channel on UA-cam! I have also tested and practiced with various pepper sprays, and I also find saber to be my overall favorite. I like the way they make their containers and the pepper spray definitely works.
Capsaicin percentage is really important too, and batch consistency. Clearly the answer is to buy a few dozen and spray them on your face to test potency and consistency.
Fox has been my go to brand, for over 20 years. Devastating heat/pain. (I get the 2 ounce, flip-top, cone spray). I've heard ok things about Sabre, but I've never tried it.
I EDC the POM with pocket clip everyday. I don’t like the keychain or belt pouch carry. POM is the only good brand that have the pocket clip which is nice to carry.
I’ve heard Fox brand pepper spray is supposed to be hotter than most other brands. I’ve been exposed to Sabre and it definitely sucks. But seeing a side by side would be awesome as far as delivery method. Since testing heat would basically be torture 🤣
I use POM for my EDC and I have a large pistol grip can of FOX for home defense scenarios that do not require deadly force. I can attest that FOX is the Real Deal Holyfield.
I've used Fox Labs 5.3 as a security officer for a year. I can personally say. Its very affective and doesn't play around. It makes people change their mind and they eventually drop crying. Very affective formula
Fox is the same hotness as Saber and POM with 1.4% MC. UDAP makes a fogger called Mugger Fogger, which is 3% MC, making it the hottest. But I think the human body taps out at the 1.4% MC rating for pain and adding more MC won't make it feel hotter
These are indeed good, but the hottest here is POM. But the hottest of all time not in video is Heatwave Napalm, Fox Labs One Point Four and DPS Black Label
If I'm not too late, best keychain imo is POM. But for best regular 2oz to 4oz size, you'd be best going with UDAP Mugger Fogger, DPS Black Label or Heatwave
I carry a POM w/belt clip every day alongside my firearm. Having a compact, less lethal option for self defense has been a very welcomed addition to my EDC.
I am so grateful for your video @hard2hurt. Thank you so much. I like to hike alone. For me, the woods are like going to "church" for me, and I recently experienced my first real red-flag fear. I'm so rattled by it all, that I'm trying to find out everything and anything I can do to increase my feeling safe and confident again, to return to what brings me the most joy. I welcome any other suggestions you can offer. I bought the Sabre you recommended.
I want to be the test subject for all these gadgets 👌🤣 I had to subscribe after the mace gun, really enjoy your channel thanks for taking time to make good videos.
My wife and I carry the POM mostly because our firearms instructor recommended it. I did find out that it was a bit hard to feel the little nub on the front. But if you get the clip type, I can easily feel the clip and it goes towards the bend of your fingers. Plus, especially my wife will actually stage it if she’s in an area that could be sketchy. Like when pumping gas at night. It does have a great stream. I decided to take an exposure to it during one of our classes. Yeah, it was really nasty shit. Slammed my eyes shut in a matter of 5 to 7 seconds.

Ive used many types of pepper sprays and sprayed many people and the best ive used was Fox Labs Foam. It flys so far and hits so hard and activates pretty quickly.
Bro out here spaying and praying 😂
Thanks for demonstrating the different types.
I like your choice.
I have a Sabre that's also good for emergency seat belt removal and emergency car window breaker.
This was a wonderful review on different ones to choose. Thank you so much for doing this.
Thanks Hard 2 hurt. This video was very helpful. Such a great concept.
I like POM because of its easy to carry. I have it on my everyday.
Absolutely worthwhile video, I will be picking up a Sabre. Probably two now that I know to get a practice one.
Super cool, I’m picking up some guard dog for sure, thanks Mike!
Excellent insight. My wife and I have been carrying mace for the past 18 months, that’ll be changing now.
this was great. John over at ASP has me sold on POM, but you got me reconsidering the Sabre flip top. Another thing that helps is knowing if there's water trainers to use which both POM and Sabre appear to have so that's good.
I try to rotate my POM out every couple months, then I use my old ones for practice.
@Timothy Fox this dude has. Never held a POM pepper spray. Saber doesn't even make a spray with a usable pocket clip
sabre is pretty weak
I find the POM to be quite ergonomic, and I've used both Sabre RED and POM to defend myself. Also, the Sabre RED (gel) DRIPPED ON MY HAND, which I was not pleased with.@@Pouncer_Fox
I have carried Sabre for years ( i buy a new one every year or so ) i am glad to see it works well. I haven't tested it like that. Thanks for the content 👍
I got Sabre pepper gel
definitely a helpful demonstration, thank you.
I like POM because it's so easy to carry, especially if your used to carrying a tactical style flashlight. If you put a stripe of Talon Tape down the side, it gives you great traction pulling it out of your pocket.
Very helpful. Thank you for doing this!
Miss this type of weapon/self defense tool test videos
Definitely worth your time. Thank you.
Excellent video! Great breakdown!Thanks
Thank you for answering the questions we all have which is the best. Average people don't have the money to spend just to test pepper spray. So thank you for giving us the knowledge on which direction to go in.
Agree****
Excellent Review! Always wonder which one was better
POM is the hands down winner. great *er*gonomics. and the bottom half can be spun so it is ready to go whether right hand or left.
with a tiny bit of practice it can be employed in an instant. i carry it every day and have given it to friends and family.
Thanks for the video, REALLY APPRECIATED!!!
Thanks definitely worthwhile, I also carry sabre flip top.
I'd like to see more product testing videos like this. The tactical whip video I've shown to several people. It's just fun content.
Thanks for that. I need to train my nieces up on using pepper spray and kicking in the groin. Thanks for your recomendation on the spray.
Last time I was this early Mike had hair.
BS. There was no youtube in 1997.
Last time i was that early i had a girl over night.
he had hair?
Mike had hair at one point?
Wait he had hair!?!?
Great, no-nonsense video! Thank you. Will absolutely get a "Sabre" flip-top for my girls at university. WORTHWHILE video and I'm SUBSCRIBED.
Kimber blaster2 is my carry, great video!
This was really good! I needed a video like this
I carry POM because John at Active self protection recommended it. Belt clip style and I keep it in my hand pointed out ready to use in transitional spaces. Thanks for the video. Very informative.
I’m sure Pom is effective and he cares about giving people good recommendations but he is sponsored by them so makes sense why he hyped it up
I've used Sabre RED gel, and switched to POM after I had to deploy it-I've also had to deploy POM, and I will continue using that brand.
You are covering your ASP
John makes $$$$ by pushing POM! I have 3 😂😂😂😂😂
This was great! Thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Yes. This was very helpful.
Very helpful! Thank you.
Yes, this is good content, I trust your objectivity which makes your reviews like this credible.
Hey mike, did you review the self defence umbrella?
Love your vids, thanks!
Hi from the UK. In England we use PAVA which can be used with TASER.
Excellent info!
*Thank You very much Sir!*
That was definitely worthwhile video thank you
This was useful thanks
Good video. I carry the Mace pocket, but I'll switch to the Sabre one now.
Sabre gel is by far the best ! Nice hard steam, with no blow back, and it sticks to the face of the attacker.👍🏻
Thank you, this was a good video. 💯
Thanks, I carry pom and will see what alteration I can do to it for better indexing.
Great video thanks 🙏
Great vid! Saves us lots of money also trial and error.
This was great and with all the pepper brands you could make this a mini series ❤.
I'd love to see UDAP Mugger Fogger, DPS Black Label and Heatwave. I've seen those as the most effective
@@ManiacMayhem7256 sup bro I carry fox labs 1.4 in my jacket and Pom on pocket. Dude check out Olight baton 3 my odc flashlight!
H2H, the best self defense channel on UA-cam!
I have also tested and practiced with various pepper sprays, and I also find saber to be my overall favorite. I like the way they make their containers and the pepper spray definitely works.
Sabre Red is great as is Sabre Blue Face. I also like POM. DPS Black Label and Heatwave I've also found a lot of success with
@@ManiacMayhem7256 Hola, cual es más picante o más fuerte de los Sprays que mencionas??
Thank you!!!
Excellent! Thank you.
I appreciate what you do. Great, helpful content as always.
Ty spicy mike! Great stuff
Thanks!
Capsaicin percentage is really important too, and batch consistency. Clearly the answer is to buy a few dozen and spray them on your face to test potency and consistency.
Clearly.
This is my anecdote but personally the most effective I've seen and tested were UDAP Mugger Fogger, Heatwave and DPS Black Label
Thank you
Fox has been my go to brand, for over 20 years. Devastating heat/pain. (I get the 2 ounce, flip-top, cone spray). I've heard ok things about Sabre, but I've never tried it.
Fox 1.4 is the best Fox has to offer. It's available on NWSelfDefense
Very Informative Video Sir. 👍
I EDC the POM with pocket clip everyday. I don’t like the keychain or belt pouch carry. POM is the only good brand that have the pocket clip which is nice to carry.
ty for this video
I love these, but you really need a sidekick to test them on💪👍
"sidekicks don't work"
I’ve heard Fox brand pepper spray is supposed to be hotter than most other brands.
Fox 1.4 is the most effective out of all the Fox. DPS Black Label and Heatwave are also very effective
Fox is not any more potent than saber RED ... Sabre red is 1.4 % capsaicinoids>>>the hottest formula you can buy
Fox is the same hotness as Saber and POM with 1.4% MC. UDAP makes a fogger called Mugger Fogger, which is 3% MC, making it the hottest. But I think the human body taps out at the 1.4% MC rating for pain and adding more MC won't make it feel hotter
POM is the best. Carry it with my ccw.
Excellent job and I appreciate you doing it instead of me lol. You did help tremendously with choosing a good self defence spray 👍👍
These are indeed good, but the hottest here is POM. But the hottest of all time not in video is Heatwave Napalm, Fox Labs One Point Four and DPS Black Label
Thank you very much. God Speed.
Thank you for the video. I think I may get the SABRE flip top. 👍
Because of this guy I was forced to get the stinger tactical whip,,,really pleased with it .
Very good use of your time!!!
The POM with the belt clip option allows you to ergonomically place it where you can orient it easily within 2 sec.
Awesome content!!
This was great. I've been trying to figure out which pepper spray to carry without having to spend hundreds of dollars and doing this test myself.
If I'm not too late, best keychain imo is POM. But for best regular 2oz to 4oz size, you'd be best going with UDAP Mugger Fogger, DPS Black Label or Heatwave
@@ManiacMayhem7256 Thanks. I ended up getting the Sabre Red with the flip top through their affiliate link.
I thought it was a worthy video. I also have the Sabre ones. They seem easy to use in a panic situation.
