    There's a lot of rude people out there. I carry 2 maces, one foam and one stream, a tazer, and a knife. I've had to mace a guy who lunged at me to assault me and 2 pit bulls in another occasion.
    Having access to them is very important. I had a homeless lady come at me in my vehicle. I offered food and she became mad. She said I knew what she wanted. My window motor has a short and wouldn't roll up. I had to fend her off with my forearm. I had NO access to my sprays in my pockets. I learned that I need to practice putting my sprays where I can access them!!!

    Retired LEO (29 years). Used OC a number of times. Fog/cone works best & quickest because is aerosolized, but is susceptible to being wind blown for the same reason. Foam/gel takes noticeably longer to take effect because it’s denser and not aerosolized, but it won’t contaminate others as easily. I don’t like foam/gel and would only use it in a hospital where you can’t affect others. Stream is usually the best for general use. Its effectiveness is between fog and gel, as is its susceptibility to wind and cross-contamination. OC works about 80% of the time, which is much, much better than any other less than lethal (Taser, stun guns, batons, hands on).

    • @glenmo1
      @glenmo1 6 місяців тому +2

      I agree but I like to stream the best because it gives you distance.. someone has a crowbar or something like that in their hand you want distance and it will be less effective by the wind... My advice is to avoid gel completely as you have to get it directly into the assailant's eyes and you're losing the effectiveness of the respiratory distress put on them... Gel only if someone is doing security in the hospital or something similar.. otherwise I go for the liquid stream flip cop top.. saber crossfire..0r defense technologies..360.....1.3% MC (major capsaicanoids).. these will spray in any angle even upside down

      @@glenmo1 …and I agree with you also, but have been in a close up dangerous situation where that portion of a second advantage of an aerosolized Fog/cone really paid off. Having said that, stream is what I usually carry. On certain occasions I add a fog/cone spray in addition to my stream. I never carry the (relatively) slow acting gel/foam.

      @@jameslitsey2512 OC in ANY form is not an acceptable response to a gun or knife. Byrne or similar are no exception. OC is only for less than lethal encounters. The JPX, etc. are bulky, probably would not be carried, and the price (over $600). I carry a stream (POM at $13.00) & sometimes a cone/fog (Fox at $25)

      @@jameslitsey2512 Just to follow up, if for some reason you cannot or choose not to carry a firearm, carry an OC of a size you’ll always have on you, ensure your residence is secure, make wise choices about where and when you go out, stay aware, and - if still confronted by gun or knife - give up your stuff & get away. Hope this helps & isn’t too preachy.

    One more very important note is to make sure that the spray nozzle is clean/free of debris. I've seen a few of those key ring types and even pocket sized bottles with junk in the spray nozzle and they would not be able to actually spray. Your pockets and purses gather to much lint.

    Great video! When I started with OC I was carrying a 1.5 - 2.0 ounce canister. They were just too bulky to carry especially in the summer. They offer greater distance and volume, but I read the majority of all OC deployments are about arms length away or at most, 4-6 feet. I have a Sabre keychain unit and pocket clip unit which is much easier to carry and still has good performance. The keychain model sprays about 10 feet and empties in 10 seconds while the pocket clip model has 14 seconds of spray. If someone decides to carry it on a keychain, they really need to use the quick release keychain so that you can carry the spray in the dominant hand and keys in the other hand. Also prevents it from getting trapped in a door lock or ignition. Also, inert training units are so important. I recommend using the inert in an adrenalized training environment against a mock attacker.

    The types can make a difference! Gel is great for indoors because fogs and spray can be sucked up by the ventilation system and clear out an office space. Had this happen when an employee had on keys and deployed accidentally.
    Fog seems to work best to get good contact with face but even a small breeze can push it right back in your face and put you in a worse situation. Also if you’re wearing contacts you’ll have to quickly remove them leaving you with bad eyesight and swollen eyes.
    The stream is good as long as you are successful deploying it in the eyes. It is perhaps the easiest to block if they see it coming. Always try to deploy in a quick surprising manner and don’t announce or threaten its use.

    • @HighProStrategic
      @HighProStrategic  6 місяців тому

      You bring up a great point about Not announcing it or using it as a threat first! It's not a firearm and doesn't follow the same rules of deployment.

    I believe pepper spray is very underrated with men and very overrated with women. Meaning that bc of strength and size difference and disparity of force, often times a woman can justify lethal force against a unarmed man attacking her. But pepper spray doesn't have the guaranteed stopping power of a firearm thus why cops never use it against a knife or bludgeon wielding suspect without lethal cover. So for a woman in that case, she cannot afford a higher failure rate if her life is on the line. Sadly most women in our society will not consider carrying a gun, and many of them carry pepper spray expecting similar success rate as a gun.
    Men play down pepper spray and play up guns too much. You will find much more men carrying just a gun, and much more women carrying just pepper spray. Not that guns are bad, but this idea you can shoot in any altercation is not warranted. Active Self Protection referenced according to DOJ 80% of assaults are just simple assaults, meaning lethal force to defend would not justify. Unlike a woman, on average, a man facing a unarmed threat from a man or even woman would not be able to shoot and would have to defend themselves with unarmed combatives. They most likely wouldn't have the disparity of force argument.
    Sadly a lot of men correctly or incorrectly believe they "got hands" and they don't need a "girly spray." But throwing down has its risks such as the guy is better than you, gets a lucky knockout or knockdown, taken to the ground and now he's grounding and pounding you and now lethal force is justified but not easy to get to your gun at all in this condition. And even you "win," victory will likely not absolute meaning maybe you knocked him out cold but maybe he knocked a few teeth of yours out before he went down.
    A good pepper spray deployment can likely cancel all those possible outcomes. Plus you can get free "shots" in for example if someone is coming around the counter, table, column, etc to "fuck you up." Plus in a simple assault situation if the pepper spray fails, you would resort to what you would have to do without it. Which is "throw hands," that's literally the worst case scenario. But that's why you wouldn't depend on pepper spray against someone with a weapon bc of possible failure rate. Which is why I believe a true defensive edc for men and women would include a firearm and pepper spray or another less lethal.

    My advice is deploy and immediately flee if possible! Local woman deployed it unexpectedly during a simple verbal dispute and got the ever living hell beat out of her. Guy claimed self defense and received no charges! She had a chance to flee but stuck around and thought she was safe to throw in some verbal jabs. Cost her badly and she even had to find another job.
