Terrific video as usual CL. My wife saw Juror #2 and had the same reaction that you did: All the elements are there for all great movie, but its lethargic pace killed it for her. Two other quick tidbits: I saw Heretic and mostly loved it. Hugh Grant was amazing throughout and I loved the way it challenges the doctrine of religious faith without coming across as peachy. Fun fact about Wicked it was actually the blueprint for the misunderstood villain storyline that we see in a lot of movies today. Wicked was the first to do it. Also the movie covers act one of the musical and the second movie will cover act two which explains a lot more and will make everything in part one make sense
Heretic is definitely my favourite of the year. Absolutely amazing movie. It's one of the few films that really stuck with me days after. Superb acting and shot beautifully. Also really tense but had me laughing loads
(from someone who has never seen Wicked either until this movie) Although Glinda is singing No One Mourns The Wicked, i think part two will tie up some loose ends, because she is not a perfect person but i wouldn’t consider Glinda evil either. She’s very impressionable, a people pleaser, wants to be the best but can’t get there, and although she’s singing along she is actually mourning her friendship with Elphaba while being in this spotlight where she can’t necessarily express that
I really liked it. The third act jumped a bit too far for me but a very solid movie , Hugh Grant is excellent, and the mythology was very sharp and engaging.
I saw a trailer randomly one day for Monster Summer but didn’t see anyone really talk about it so imagine my surprise when it shows up on your list. Thanks for giving your thoughts on it as I thought it looked decent and had some potential to be a campy/fun time.
Dude! In the Wizard of Oz Glenda called Dorothy ugly, sent her on a murder mission, and DIDNT TELL HER about the slippers until her competition was vanquished.
For anyone who has never seen the stage production of Wicked or doesn't know the entire story, it will indeed ALL make sense in Part 2/Act 2. What you think you know, you really don't. And then you will be able to go back to Part1/Act 1 and see certain things completely differently. That's what happened to me and so many others who saw the stage production of it.
Boy, I was not expecting the beating you gave Dear Santa. While I wouldn't say the premise was doomed from the start, it did feel like an SNL skit stretched to a movie. And I'm surprised because Bobby Farrelly made Champions, one of my biggest surprises of 2023. Also, I fell asleep at Birdman, Creed and Hateful 8. And I LOVE those movies, so I don't always blame the movies.
Just watched Dear Santa and went into it expecting it to bomb based on the review here. But I was presently surprised. I think Cody's off base here, because this was actually pretty good or at least okay. It wasn't bad though, by any stretch and had some endearing elements. To be fair, there are... some story problems. There are a bunch of pieces that don't always seem like they blend into the plot. These range from minor wrinkles that could have been ironed out with some better editing or writing, to a few really clunky parts of the storyline. In particular, the ending was kind of weird in more ways than one. But, I love the concept and there were a few really interesting ideas thrown in. I agree that the little brother part of the plot was poorly executed. I do get what they were trying to do by hinting around at something for most of the movie and then finally revealing the nature of it toward the end, but the way in which they did it just didn't have enough dramatic impact. It would have been better if this part of the story just felt more connected to everything else that was going on in the story rather than just being a bad thing that happened and caused a rift between the mom and the dad as a result. They could have tied that into some of the kid's characters more directly... But it is what it is. Also, I usually do not like Jack Black or his movies, But I actually did really enjoy him in this role. And the rest of the cast was also pretty good. I also really liked just how christmasy this movie was. Christmas wasn't the central theme like it is in a lot of Christmas movies, but it was absolutely everywhere and also an integral part of the story.
I watched Anora 2 days ago because it was the only time I could see it and Christ I was dying of laughter. “PLEASE STOP SCREAMING” is one of the funniest scenes of the year…
Mentioned this on a couple of channels but my film of the year is a Slovakian folk lore horror called Nightsiren..Picked it up over Halloween as the Arrow blu ray cover looked cool and the film is amazing.. I don't think I have watched a film where I have been so invested in the main characters story.. Not enough talk or love for this film. If you watch it, avoid spoilers and the trailer..the less you know the better the story .. :)
This was a slow month at the movies for me. Saw only Anora, Gladiator 2, and Heretic. I couldn't even bother with any of the others, even with my A List subscription. Wicked is just not for me and I hardly remember the first Moana and didn't feel inclined to revisit it. I would've seen Juror #2 but it didn't make it to my theater, which is surprising since it may be Eastwood's last movie.
The basic arc of Nutcrackers with the tough kids finding their way has some similarities to The Best Christmas Pageant Ever….but that film had so much more charm and heart, very much enjoyed it
Years ago, my mom bought tickets from me and my husband to go see wicked live and we were not expressing until I get we’ve never gone to a musical before I do like musical movies. He doesn’t so much love that we both love that musical. I kinda want to see the movie I wasn’t sold on it , but I do love the musical wicked
New to Amazon Prime that came out this year- Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. It’s China’s submission for best international film at the Oscar’s this year. It’s like John Wick meets Crouching Tiger meets Boy Kills World
just watched heretic because usually you are solid at ranking movies (few misfires on your part) and it was amazing. came back to see if there was anything else worthwhile on this list... Any recommendations for movies similar to heretic?
Heretic is in my top 3 movies of the year alongside Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Strange Darling. Out of the 80 something new releases I’ve caught this year, those were the 3 films that made it to the top of my scale. If I were in charge of award selections, Hugh Grant would be in the running for best actor.
I watched Wicked on Broadway. If Part 2 stays true to the play, you will get an answer to your question in Part 2 and a lot more about the Wizard of Oz characters. Anora was a great movie! It was definitely very funny. I was dying of laughter after Anora's husband ran away and was with the guys in the house. Mikey Madison was incredible.
Hey Cody I always make sure to watch every upload and I really love your channel. I was wondering since you love metal music I was wondering if you ever listened to Ice Nine Kills and if not they have two albums called The Silver Scream and Welcome To Horrorwood (The Silver Scream part 2). Every song on each album circles around a horror movie. For Example: They have a song called The American Nightmare and that song is based off of Nightmare on Elm Street. I highly recommend you listen to them.
Super solid month. Real hits, real misses 1. Anora 2. Emilia Perez 3. A Real Pain 4. GladIIator 5. Juror No. 2 6. Christmas Eve in Miller's Point 7. Best Christmas Pageant Ever 8. Maria 9. Nutcrackers 10. Heretic (solid/good here on up) 11. Moana 2 12. Our Little Secret 13. Sweethearts 14. Monster Summer 15. Memoir of a Snail 16. Here 17. Hot Frosty 18. Wicked 19. Red One (what a kick in the balls)
I would go back and rewatch the opening of Wicked now that you’ve seen all of part 1. It’s very nuanced but Ariana’s facial expressions during that song show off how conflicted she is in the moment. Part 2 does elaborate further. The whole point of Wicked is telling a story we all thought we knew from a different perspective. The line “is someone born wicked or where they made that way” is the takeaway for part one. Part 2 does elaborate more and gets into propaganda and other political things about oz (can’t use the word, UA-cam doesn’t like it)
I don’t see any comments about Wicked Part II yet, but I will say this: It will bridge this story to the Wizard of Oz we know and come full circle. I imagine, “imagine”, that part 2 will be darker. That’s all I’ll say.
I don't want to obviously spoil what happens in Part 2 but the explanation for why the world is repulsed towards Elphaba while she does good deeds is one of the biggest themes explored throughout the show and will absolutely make sense once the second film rolls around.

If I rank these based on how excited I am to watch them: 11. Nutcrackers 10. Dear Santa (I at least am curious about what kind of cringe humor is going to be in it) 9. Red one 8. 100 yards 7. Wineville 6. Gladiator 2 5. Wicked 4. Juror #2 3. Monster summer 2. Anora 1. Heretic
Watch Fatman, another Mel Gibson movie that was overlooked since he isn't seen as being as in high regard as he used to be...but it's an awesome movie, and perfect for this time of year!
The only thing I'll say about the opening of Wicked is I don't think Glinda was jovial, you can see on her face she is conflicted, but putting on a facad
Referring to you being put off by the opening of Wicked, I’d watch that scene again at some point and just watch Ariana Grande’s facial expressions through the whole thing and you will see she is anything but celebrating 👍I won’t say anything else, but part 2 does put some more context on the opening for sure
At the end of part 1 Elphaba becomes a scapegoat for the wizard, much like the animals of oz. Wicked is really about how outward appearances are not always the reality of a situation. Without spoiling anything I would keep this idea in mind if you ever rewatch the opening scene, particularly Ariana's performance. Also (again without going into any details) if the movie stays true to the musical this scene should be revisited in part 2. Also the idea of the story is that you are supposed to feel sorry for Elphaba. Think of Wicked less as a villain origin story and more as a reframing of the narrative from a certain point of view. I hope that clears a few things up.
Heretic was baaaaaad and I love religious horror. I agree that the tension through dialogue was well executed. The rest was subpar. Almost thought you were paid to gas this movie up.
I took my girlfriend to see the play in September of Wicked. And when I see the movie it was extremely well done. All your questions will be answered in part 2 trust me
My Old Ass with Aubrey Plaza creeped it's way kinda high on my list. It's not what the marketing makes it look like, it's definitely worth checking out.
Anora had a limited release and a wide release so I mistakenly included it in both October and November. Forgive the repeat.
No worries amazing video nonetheless
Nothing to forgive
Idk man I don’t think I can ever forgive you for that one! 😂
nah that film was so fire it had to be mentioned twice this year 😈
Terrific video as usual CL.
Ignoring a disappointing ending of a "resurrection" that the film doesn't quite pull off, I thought it was great.
Then there is Anora. Look, I really wanted to love this one. I enjoyed Red Rocket, Tangerine and Florida Project so I expected to love this.
I was severely let down. I found the plot to be incredibly predictable, the humor to mostly not land for me and a severe lack of steaks that killed the movie's tension. It felt like it was checking boxes rather than raising the steaks. Ultimately I found it deeply underwhelming.
Nevertheless, great work Cody! I can't wait to see if Abigail is your movie of the year pick.
I turned off Nutcrackers after 10 minutes and proceeded to watch three holiday episodes of King of the Hill. Was not disappointed.
Fun fact about Wicked it was actually the blueprint for the misunderstood villain storyline that we see in a lot of movies today. Wicked was the first to do it. Also the movie covers act one of the musical and the second movie will cover act two which explains a lot more and will make everything in part one make sense
Took your recommendation on Heretic, and yeah, it's a phenomenal movie. Very witty script, and well acted all around!
I get too hyped when this man uploads
I do too
Same lmao
Same been waiting on this one for a while
I like when he gets angry and vulgar because that resonates with my feelings towards these movies lol

Heretic is definitely my favourite of the year. Absolutely amazing movie. It's one of the few films that really stuck with me days after. Superb acting and shot beautifully. Also really tense but had me laughing loads

I already have pre-ordered Heretic on digital video and can't wait to watch it again with my folks!

Heretic was my biggest pleasant surprise of the year to this point.
Getting me hyped! I plan on renting this tomorrow when it comes on streaming. 🤌🏻
I really liked it. The third act jumped a bit too far for me but a very solid movie , Hugh Grant is excellent, and the mythology was very sharp and engaging.
Looking forward to your top 10's of 2024, man!!

It's what I've come to think of Christmas anyway.

YOU WILL DEFINITELY UNDERSTAND EVEERYTHING ABOUT ELPHABA IN PART TWO! IT GETS WILD! love the vids!
Hugh Grant has made some truly fascinating career choices over the past few years.
Was good in D&D movie.
He's had a wild second act. He jumped far past his "goofy rom com guy #4" and it was quite welcome.
Great video as always!
I was blown away by Wicked cuz i absolutely did not expect it to be that good
I have not seen a single one of these films and now look forward to a few of them. Side note: wearing a Zombie H2 shirt is chef's kiss hilarious.
Saw Heretic twice. A 5/5 for me
Didn’t amaze me as much as everyone else but still good

Good to hear that Heretic is a great movie, me and my fiance are watching it on Saturday night so it's something to look forward to :)
I want to see Heretic, Red One, Monster Summer, Wicked, Juror#2 & now Anora with your review. Always enjoy your opinions🙂
You will understand Wicked when Part Two comes out
Heretic was also my fav movie of the year. Top notch acting by High Grant

Gladiator is my favorite of the year. So that one would be my number one
I hear what you're saying about Wicked as a film, but what the people really want to know is...are you "holding space" for Defying Gravity? 😆
