That’s what they call it! Well the more I dive into to it, the more it impresses me. When you build on an island, new challenges emerge when building. These challenges become the basis upon which you look for alternative answers to typical questions. But you need the right client and builder on the team. In this video, I introduce a new project, the “Vineyard Passive House” in this video. It just so happens that Farley, the homeowner/client, is also the builder. We start with the foundation, and while the typical foundation is a cast concrete wall - this is anything but typical…….yes, we are using the “Perfect Block”. In this video I introduce the Perfect Block and why Farley and I think it was the right choice for this project…..Enjoy the video, and of course….Long Live Our Buildings….

I had written ICF off because of the termite problem, But this is perfect. And even better insulation than ICF!
As long as it is competitively priced I see this as a winner!

    Steve,
This looks brilliant. I really like how it will keep the Termite & Bugs out & help creates a warmer basement & slab by insulating the foundation wall.
I wonder if it would even have utility on my project? Keeping the slab warm seems way better than regular concerte blocks.
    Cheers,
    Eric

If you sealed and water proofed foundation walls; with french drain, I assume it would handle a flood as this is occurring all over the country now. Be interested to see video on how that would be addressed.

Steve, what about fiberglass rebar? Is it manufactured in large thicknesses and is it as strong as steel? The reason I ask is because it seems like a superior product to steel. It's much lighter and will never rust.

Was Durisol/Nexcem ICCF considered as a potential solution for this house? If so, what disqualified it, R-value, thermal bridging, issues in ensuring air tightness? I’m thinking of the feasibility of a building a Passive House with Durisol/Nexcem from foundation/basement to outer walls. Thank you for the feedback!

Excellent content. What about moisture and vapor barrier. Another advantage is stucco and titles can be adhered directly with no barrier

R value is 1.73 an inch due to the cement.

Steve i know you dont divulge the exact amount of cost for the house. But are you able to give a range of costs for the basements within the 10k range for the square foot costs of different parts of the project. It's so hard to find even general costs of different parts of a building house project. And if you are unaware your sound is fading in and out in some parts, but I love your videos as you are so detail oriented.

      I've heard that each block costs are roughly $25.... that's 12" x 10" x 5' >>> $25 block, $25.25 rebar, $43.33 cement. / 5 = roughly 20$ per sq foot . pretty good. thats what ,y research is so far. $20 per 20' for rebar, $130 per yd cement 4000 psi 6 slump, and ef block at 1 (5x12"x10") $25

If you rebar every course and every vertical, fill it with 3000 concrete, it'll be virtually indestructible. I mean like a tornado could slam a big truck into it and might dent it lol

8.0 rated is quite strong! If I ever build a home, the whole thing will be perfect block. How difficult is a concrete roof?

it should be cheaper than concrete block but it costs $14 per 52lb block; the Styrofoam recycled material is for free so with a little added concrete/binder it should be really cheap; instead they pumped up the price that people run away

HORRIBLE audio!!! If you’re gonna be outside, wear a lapel mic, talk TO the fixed mic - not away from it, and don’t stand 15 feet away from the mic when it’s windy. This is an example of how not to do audio. I expect better from Build Show - this is subpar production. At times the audio was totally unintelligible.

Agreed. There are moments in the video during which I had to struggle to understand what was being said and other moments which contain nothing but wind noise. Even a low-cut filter in post would have helped but it sounds like the camera audio was uploaded without any processing.
There's no reason to have such poor audio these days. It distracts the viewer from the content and reflects badly on the channel.
UA-cam has plenty of excellent production audio channels full of good information. Start with Curtis Judd and work your way out from there.
