I fought Catholicism for 56 years, once God gave me the grace to understand it (and He had to be persistent), I somehow knew I was going to be Catholic a year before I made the decision, trying to fight it the whole time. 4 years ago this Easter, I came into the Church and have NEVER been more fulfilled. Thank you Jesus!
Welcome Home. I am a convert and entered the CC 17.5 years ago. Never turning back and similar to your story, I'd not ever understood, but once the light went on, after reading 3 books (God knew how to get through to me once I was actually humble and open enough to "listen") I could not jump the Tiber fast enough!
To be catholic Requires that I adopt an artificial division between the OT and NT in which the NT takes interpretive priority and overrides the meaning of the OT at key, prophetic texts. Requires I abandon a Standard, consistent historical grammatical hermeneutics and adopt a Christo-typological interpretation of the Bible. I have to overlook the profound impact Greek Philosophy and allegory had upon Augustine's views of the Bible. I have to ignore the historical reality that premillenism was believed by and taught by the early church up and until Augustine made it unpopular with the publication of his "City of God. Requires that I ignore all grammatical indicators that clearly distinguish between the Jewish people and the nation of Israel and the NT church. I have to believe promises made directly to Jewish Israel of a future salvation and restoration is fulfilled entirely in the NT church. The NT church is the same as the OT "Israel". I have to understand Revelation 20 to be a recapitulation that takes me back to to the beginning of the church age rather than than following naturally and chronologically from the events in Revelation 19. Shalom
I always said that if I ever converted, I would be anything except Catholic. God replied with "hold my beer". I went to college and came out with no ability to deny the truth of the Catholic Church. I hated that it was true, but had to accept it and now have been Catholic for over a decade and am raising 3 Catholic sons.
@@dylan3456 if im being honest, I didn't have to change my mind on that because in those days I was "culturally baptist" but actually more Athiest leaning agnostic when God showed me the Church. So, I didn't even have to have the substitutionary atonement struggle until much later
@@sidneycline3366 I had the same sort of thing happen and was thoroughly convinced the Roman Catholic Church must be the real source of all the deepest theology. Eventually I found out of course that it wasn’t, exactly, when I started digging into what exactly connects us to the events of the New Testament. The fact that atonement is unsettled doctrine with various permitted “theories” didn’t sit well with me. Atonement is kind of the main thing. There was lots of philosophical exploration into the nature of God, of man, of all the varying kinds of graces and bits and bobs to hang on your rear view mirror etc, and of all sorts of phenomena-but precious little to say with any certainty about why the cross. That’s why I’m Lutheran today, despite nearly joining a quite historic monastery in France only a few years ago. I miss the feeling of overwhelming certainty about worldly affairs sometimes, I admit. The beauty of it all was dazzling, and sometimes that made me weep with joy. I had an encounter with American priests headed to Rome, one of whom was laughing and shaking his head in disbelief as he sat with me in a garden at the monastery and told me how God was blessing me. But then I had to really live in the raw disordered world of the 8-5 grind outside cloistered dreamlands and, with a second glance, their faces as I remembered them looked less cherubic, sadder, untouched somehow. It’s hard to explain-especially if you’re living in that sort of certainty about how to look at people, about what to do. My sins for His righteousness. That’s always so much more than anything else I’ve ever prayed for and it’s certainly mine. Can you see how that can sort of grey-out everything else Roman Catholic traditions keep your focus on? Anyway, sorry for the novel. Just felt like putting that down.
@@dylan3456, well, it’s not easy to be a priest and to live that life. It’s a life of self-sacrifice, which is dying and denying oneself for others (which are no other than the brethren of Christ) and trying to transcend the humanity in themselves for a higher and nobler purpose which is divine in nature. For one, the discipline of celibacy is not an easy thing, as it is innate for us humans to have physical partners in our lives. For these reasons, you somehow feel in them that of being “untouched,” sadder,” etc. It’s really an “abnormal” life, you might say, as Jesus’ life was an abnormal one as well, wasn’t it?

I love the big hug fest and flirtations like oh, tell me a little more and maybe I’ll join you ;) Let’s not lose our heads and forget this is about God. There’s a big problem though with this whole approach to knowing God. How does Scott Hahn know God? Did his knowledge about God, evidently recorded in both Nature and Scripture, ascertained by his unhindered intellect, develop? Or does he know God immediately, so to speak, when he prays in the name of Christ? Organic growth is the Roman Catholic understanding of doctrinal development but it isn’t the understanding of revelation. Look, I understand this entirely; it’s an appeal to natural reason. It’s only reasonable that our understanding of anything at all should deepen over time and study across generations-that’s what happens in every other topic as well. But is that the story of a finished work or an ongoing work? What I wonder about is whether you see yourself blurring the line between direct revelation recorded in a completed canon and a developing canon of natural human knowledge of all things.

It is interesting which "sticking points" are the "if it is true, then Catholicism is true and I must be Catholic." I was approaching Catholicism from an historical point of view, that is, which church is closest to the Church Christ established. But, when my mother, who is an ex-Catholic, confronted me, her sticking point was the Eucharist. She said, " if the Eucharist is really Jesus, then I must be Catholic, but it can't be because (insert typical protestant anti-real-presence rhetoric). At that point, the Eucharist became my sticking point, because I had already established that Catholicism fits the historic narrative, at least better than any Protestant church. Well, I had a vision (not a dream in my sleep, but a vision while awake in prayer) that confirmed the Real Presence, as well as Dr. Hahn's excellent proofs and arguments. I never really found the papacy to be a sticking point. As soon as I heard about Peter meaning Rock, I believed. It wasn't an issue. He said "My," and generally, not individually these or those, through which it is understood that He entrusted all to him. Hey I am interested in your journey to Catholicism because you are a charismatic. I have read many convert stories but there are 'relatively' fewer from the charismatic strand. @YAJUN YUAN “Moreover, we have biblical evidence-John 1:42-that also points to Jesus using Aramaic in the naming of Peter: “[Andrew] brought [Peter] to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas’” (which means Peter). The name Cephas is an anglicized form of the Aramaic Kepha, which means simply “rock.” There would have been no “small rock” to be found in Jesus’ original statement to Peter. Even well-respected Protestant scholars will agree on this point. Baptist scholar D. A. Carson, warites, in The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: [T]he underlying Aramaic is in this case unquestionable; and most probably kepha was used in both clauses (“you are kepha” and “on this kepha”), since the word was used both for a name and for a “rock.” The Peshitta (written in Syriac, a language cognate with a dialect of Aramaic) makes no distinction between the words in the two clauses.” www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/peter-the-rock
About the catholic church: Change the Sabbath" Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her,- she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday, the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday, the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority."- "A Doctrinal Catechism," by Rev. As a protestant minister of an evangelical church, I absolutely love this dialogue! I have a degree in patristics and absolutely love the church fathers… I love the unity and the dialogue of this conversation. I love that we can hold to mere Christianity with Christ as the head and our unity is in Christ! I am so blessed and filled with joy to call my brothers and sisters in the Roman Catholic Church truly my brothers and sisters in Christ! Thank you Matt and thank you Cameron! I have enjoyed you both for so many years now.
Brant Pitre's explanation of the Jewish roots of the Papacy is excellent. He shows how the keys given to Peter do not just contain royal authority as steward of the Kingdom but a priestly authority as well. The keys to the temple in Jerusalem were kept on the rock that the temple(church) was built on.
Catholic Encyclopedia: The Pope: "The expressions binding and loosing here employed are derived from the current terminology of the Rabbinic schools. A doctor who declared a thing to be prohibited by the law was said to bind, for thereby he imposed an obligation on the conscience. He who declared it to be lawful was said to loose." ------ Binding and loosing is originally a Jewish Mishnaic phrase also mentioned in the New Testament, as well as in the Targum. In usage, to bind and to loose simply means to forbid by an indisputable authority and to permit by an indisputable authority. ----One passage helps us immensely in clarifying what is meant in this text. For the same pair of Greek words (δέω and λύω) used in Revelation 20 for the concept of binding and loosing, respectively, are used by the Lord to describe church discipline in the Gospel of Matthew. In Matthew 18:18, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, whatever you shall bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” Jesus taught us that church authorities can prohibit or permit certain types of behavior. In other words, on the one hand the elders of the church can hold unrepentant church members to account by "binding" them and not allowing them certain privileges of their membership. For instance, a man in an adulterous relationship could be forbidden to participate in the Lord's Supper while the church holds him accountable and seeks his repentance. Then on the other hand, if this man were to later repent and show appropriate fruits of repentance, the elders could at the proper time forgive him and "loose" him from the consequences of his sin by allowing him to return to the Lord's Table. So to "bind" someone is to prevent them from exercising a right they would normally have, and to "loose" a person is to permit them to exercise their natural behavior. >>>Jesus gave Peter “the keys of the kingdom of heaven,” not the keys to heaven.1 A key was a badge of authority ( Luke 11:52 ), and then as now was used to open doors. Peter used the keys Christ gave him to open the door to the Jews on the Day of Pentecost ( Acts 2 ), to the Samaritans after the preaching of Philip ( Acts 8:14-17 ), and to the Gentiles after the Lord had sent him a vision and an appeal from Cornelius ( Acts 10 ). The concept of “binding and loosing” found in Matthew 16:19 and Matthew 18:18 was commonly used among the Jewish people in relation to the authority of the rabbis to forbid and permit certain practices. Jesus gave Peter and the apostles authority over both the doctrine and practices of the first-century church. Through the leading of the Holy Spirit, they would be given wisdom to know what to forbid and what to permit.
As has already been noted: this was the best discussion. I am on a similar journey as Cameron, though I'm near 100% so I'll be signing up for RCIA after Easter. But! Was reading along and found this to just add the mix regarding the already convincing evidence (/truth) that is the papacy. I'd never really noted the significance before in Acts 5:12-15: "Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon’s portico. None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them. Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and women, were added to them. Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them." It could have said one of the apostles' shadows. But PETER is the one that had primacy. And the people even recognized that at the time. Wow.
Yes, great point! I just contacted RCIA after discerning Catholicism for nearly 3 years. I'll be joining the group of newly confirmed Catholics for their mystagogy after Easter. Then will be a break for summer but I'll join the new RCIA group in September. I could make a profession of faith and go through this process more quickly but I want the whole experience. I'm excited to attend the Easter Vigil this Saturday and see what I have to look forward to next Easter when I'm confirmed. May God bless you on your journey.
I will say this. Not all RCIA programs are good. Don't lose heart if you end up with a person teaching heretical things. Gently bring it to their attention after the class with as a few witnesses as possible. If they change their mind good and if not you can correct them in the more public way of the class (if they persist in teaching falsehoods). Just make sure to have citations for the corrections.
For my part I feel incredibly fortunate to be a fly on the wall during Cameron's explorations/excavations into Catholicism. It is such a personal journey for most of us and the fact that he is "bringing us along" as it were, is a privilege that we truly don't deserve.

I hope Cameron continues to record his process so he can share with people in the same situation. Dr. Scott Hahn has such a gift from God!
Dr. Hahn’s attentiveness and sincere interest in just listening is admirable. The guy could string a list a mile long of arguments but his first move is to just listen. Awesome. Dr. Hahn’s last words to Cameron described my journey into the Church. Each doctrine had to be examined. As I accepted one then next would be a problem I would have to work through. For example, I would say to myself I’m ok with what the Church teaches except for Mary… I would study & pray about the doctrines & dogmas on Mary until I finally realized the truth & accepted it. Then the next doctrine would come up…I’m ok with the teachings of the Church except for the papacy…etc. etc. Until all my objections were gone. I entered into RCIA after that. I came home 2014 & have never regretted it! 😁👍🙏❤️

I am an inquirer and relate to Cameron on many different planes. I went to my first EO Divine Liturgy on Christmas in ‘22, then my first Holy Mass this past Holy Thursday and then a Eastern Catholic Divine Liturgy on Pascha. I grew up Charismatic and went off the deep end into New Age and have watched many of my friends deconstruct faith out of their life completely. I came back to the Lord in 2017 and now find myself dissatisfied in the Protestant church and longing to partake in the Eucharist. This podcast alone has given me so much to think about and answered so many questions and concerns I’ve had about becoming Catholic and the debate in my head over Catholic vs Orthodox. Thank you Matt for hosting this! Pretty sure this helped me decide to become Catholic.
Thus was a fantastic conversation. I know what Cameron is going through. I’ve been there. I was a Presbyterian and had Catholic friends. One of them put Rome Sweet Home in my hands. Two years later I became Catholic. That was 19 years ago! I love listening to Dr. Hahn. He is such an immense treasure to the Catholic Church.

My list could go on and on… I’d really like to see how this turns out. Happy Easter Brothers and Sisters
My Catholic faith was strengthened within this conversation (still have a lot of woah in the faith). Thanks all you three and Welcome home in advance Cameron!
I have a list of people, for whom I pray daily that they will become Catholic. Cameron has been on that list for about a year. God bless you, Cameron, on your journey.
Catholics like you, who rather than attack or mock Protestants for their ignorance or spiritual blindness instead show grace, love, and a desire for them to reach the Church, are what helped me realize that there is no way Catholicism is a satanic cult unless it's the worst one ever because I certainly see fruit among them!!! You are doing so many blessings by interceding for others the way you do. I love Christ's church and seeing Him reflected, it just further reaffirms my awe and reverence for the mysteries of God.
@@Christ-Is-King_ It would be a grave mistake for us to do so. The Church has officially and irrevocably recognized in Vatican II that all followers of Christ out of the Visible Church (through no fault of their own) are "Separated Brethren" and we are to talk with them about our faith with gentleness and respect (as the Bible recommends!) as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, with hope to bring unity to Christ's body (as Christ Himself wished us to be!) So, God willing, may all other interactions be like so as well! May God illuminate my brothers and sisters in these truths.
I do really like Cameron’s humility. I’ve watched him do some discussions and he is very charitable. I can relate to him with having to do research because it’s a huge decision and ultimately your soul is at stake. I was received into the Catholic church this past Saturday at the Easter Vigil. It was a beautiful special moment. I’m actually glad you’re doing your research because I have faith that you will get to the right conclusion. Whatever that is for you.
Just remember it’s Christ’s Church not Pope Francis’. The Holy Spirit leads and works for good through the Office of Peter. We must pray for the Pope & always view him with charity. ✝️🙏❤️✝️
Dr Hahn is such an elegant, humble and eloquent way of expressing himself that is a pleasure listening to him. The Spirit has greatly blessed the Church by guiding him home
Cameron, while I have great appreciation for the inquisitive nature of the journey you are on, don’t get too caught up in your own personal numbers, methods and metrics. Faith can be discerned, but not analyzed, nor measured, at least not to the satisfaction of a mere mortal, like you and I. “Blessed is he who has not seen, but believes.”
Thank you Matt! Wonderful interview! I admire you all. You for being a devout catholic. Mr. Hahn for being a devout catholic and for opening our eyes. I really think that you will be declared a Saint one day. Cameron, I admire your humility. Come home.... you are only a few steps away.
Dr. Hahn just has an amazing way with words. Just so fluid, concise, smooth, and charming. I personally think he’s a better speaker than writer! Thank the Lord for the work that this man has done for the church.
Sigh. Dr. Hahn explains things so wonderfully (I was going to say beautifully but it’s more than that), I cry out of gratitude that I’m part of this Church. Ever since I’ve started watching Pints, I feel like I get hit with shockwaves of the good, the true, and the beautiful. Thank you for bringing such AMAZING speakers and honest seekers. Prayers for and blessings to all of you!
That boy Cameron finna be Catholic in the next few months FOR SURE!! Scott Hahn is one of the greatest instruments of the Catholic faith. Praise be to God ❤️🙏🏻
And that’s what a masterclass from a true theological heavyweight looks like. So winsome! And honestly, kudos to Cameron for his intellectual and spiritual integrity and honesty. This whole conversation was a delight to listen to!
Wow! This discussion just made me feel so proud, so joyful and so confident to be a Catholic following the Church established by Jesus. Dr. Scott Hahn, once again you articulated all your points so well, with confidence, humility, without being forceful or condescending. The way you evangelize is a true example to me. Thank you for all that you do for our faith 🙏🏻
I adore listening to Dr. Hahn speak. His explanation, especially as a new convert myself (thanks be to God!), makes the Catholic Church so much easier to understand, while also giving me an ability to appreciate the complexity and continuity within the Church. Absolutely love him.
Dr Hahn, it is a great blessing for us that you do not speak in sound bytes but instead give exhaustive, well researched and profound explanations on matters of the Faith. It's like taking a class on theology. We learn so much more about our Catholic Faith which means our knowlegde of the Lord is deepened and therefore our love for God deepens as well. Please rest assured that you are doing invaluable service for Our Lord and His Church.
Beautiful! Thank you, Lord, for bringing Cameron along this journey, and letting us all watch and pray for him as he goes. And Cameron, keep walking along this road with Jesus! From the cross, Jesus gave you a mother: and she is Mary herself, and she is also the Church herself. You are not an orphan. You have a home, and it has rules for structure and good food for your life. So keep walking along this road, and know that God is running to meet you!
For 1 hour each morning I use several parts of Hallow. Daily Gospel, Daily Saint, Sunday Homilies by Bishop Baron & Father Mike, music, the rosary ,daily reflections by Jeff Cavins, morning psalms read by Bishop Barron.
This was awesome. I was raised in the Lutheran Church (LCMS) and converted to Catholicism in 1983 at the age of 22. Was a path much like the one Toothless draws in the sand in How To Train Your Dragon :-)
Thank you Dr Hahn, you are such a blessing to the Catholic faith. I've been watching Journey thru Lent over and over again. Please have some more programs we can watch.
Check out the St. Paul Center. It is Scott Hahn’s ministerial organization. Lots of books, video series on the Bible in Catholicism, and more. He is one of my go-to guys for Catholicism! Another is Dr. David Anders who has a show on EWTN, Called to Communion with David Anders. He is also a convert to Catholicism and brilliant!
Cameron's method of analysis is very intriguing, as someone who returned to the Church after studying physics. However, I'm kind of hoping it ends up at exactly 50%. Praying for him!
I found Cameron’s slip in 46:55 hilarious! I can’t imagine how much the Saints in Heaven rejoice when someone converts if seeing someone I don’t know being so close to the Truth gives me so much joy.
It's actually around the 46:45 mark, but, yes, it's a great slip of the tongue. I like that Dr. Hahn's eyebrows go up when he hears the mistake and then Cameron corrects himself. This tells me that he is much closer, whether it be consciously or subconsciously, to conversion than we may think. The Holy Spirit is at work. I just subscribed to his channel to watch the hammer drop.
@@Wgaither1 - welcome ‘home’ as in ‘dwelling place of the Lord’! And a feeling of peace and love with Christ! Home is the place you go back to with family. thank you for giving light on the connection of popes to how Jesus prayed for Peter Dr. Scott Hahn. Thank you Matt for having him on this show. Amazing how God works in Cameron's life ~ sweeeeet Jesus! ❤
This has to be one of your best episodes Matt!! Dr Hahn is incredibly bless to have so much wisdom and knowledge and how gently and tenderly he responded to all the objections, you gotta bring him back!!! Cameron’s time will come that the Holy Spirit will reveal to him the truth bc we don’t follow man, we follow Christ and the church He founded, God bless you all! 🙏🏼🙌🏻❤️
I’m watching this on the first Sunday of Advent 2022, shortly after Cameron announced he is studying to enter the Roman Catholic Church. Truly a blessing! God guide and protect Cameron and his family!
Thank you Matt and Scott for the truly valuable and persuasive discourse on Catholicism and the Papacy! This was very enlightening and helps me to know how to form my own arguments when confronting those from other religions who start to “argue” with me regarding Catholicism!
Bayesian analysis. Wow. I had to look it up. I had to thank the Lord that it was His decision to make me a heart person, and I didn’t come to faith by questions of intellectual points. But I also had to thank Him that He decided Cameron should be such a (deeply humble) head person so the rest of us could be strengthened by just how rational God is. It’s just glory all around, which is very good for me, a heart person. Thank you, Cameron, Scott, Matt, Trent, Jimmy, and all the others working on this beautiful project! I love the way God made you so fearfully and wonderfully.
Scott Hahn is like taking a sip from a fire hydrant as I think I’ve heard him mention his family and student describe him as. The look on their faces when he stops talking is exactly what my face looks like. What a gems we have in Scott and Kimberly Hahn.
I haven't listened to the episode yet, but I'm here to say that I love your show and I usually listen to the interviews while I'm cooking and eating breakfast - which is the best time of the day, imo.
I was where Cameron was at and after thousands of hours reading the fathers, saints & Scripture I ended up in the Eastern Orthodox Church without a doubt in my mind I made the rational choice. Now my conviction is even stronger I made the right decision. I will say that if he becomes Catholic, at least he is in a apostolic Church.
Should have read/studied the Jewish roots of the faith. From conception the Church was an OFFICIAL sect within Judaism. When you read Acts 1 and if you are familiar with Halakhah Law you will immediately notice that the Church is a legal entity WITHIN Judaism. There are 3 requirements which are met. Firstly, notice that there are 120 members in this synagogue. Why is this important? It is the exact number of persons in the Halakhah regulations to form a full fledged synagogue. Secondly next according to Halakhah regulations there must be a "beit din" (Hebrew court) formed. We see that there is a beit din and it draws lots and Matthias a disciple is chosen to take over Judas bishopric (episkopen). The first example of Apostolic Succession. So two of the three requirements are met. The third requirement is that there must be a NASI (prince/temporal) and an AB (father/spiritual) appointed. Curiously Peter is filling both these positions in this beit din. Why? In 190 BC the Kohan Gadol (high priest office) fell into apostasy and beit din gadol cast a vote of no confidence splitting the two offices of the kohan gadol into the "nasi" and the "ab" within the Beit Din Gadol. Fast forward to Matt16, in this new Beit Din Gadol (70 disciples) Christ has placed His confidence in Peter (the first AB/father/pope meaning papa) by presenting him the Keys to the temple and bringing the two offices back together the way it originally was. The pope has both temporal and spiritual powers. Peter is the NASI prince of the apostles and the AB/pope (Pope meaning papa - meaning father) as you see even today the pope as Peters documented unbroken apostolic successor is both ‘nasi’ and the ‘ab’ in Catholicism. Christ appointed Peter as His steward with the keys as per Isaiah 22 vs 19-24 and Matt16. Peter is First amongst equals. In the Davidic kingdoms there was always an al-bayith (steward), that is Peters role. Christ also renames Peter (the only Apostle renamed) as Abraham and Jacob were renamed by God in preparation for their specific role in salvation history. Peter's successors (Popes) are first amongst equals ie bishops who make up the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. First book of Kings lists all the Kings and it always has the royal steward/vizier listed next to the King as well because in the absence of the King he was in charge of the Kingdom. The steward is given the sash/robes/keys to the temple because the role is also a priestly role. The steward would wear the keys around his neck so the citizens of the davidic kingdoms knew who he was. (Rashi/Jewish sage writes a commentary on the priestly role of the steward/vizier and the Keys are the keys of the temple and government). Jesus presents the keys to Peter (Pope/ab) and appoints him/his successors as His royal steward to care for HIs flock until His return.
@@SaintCharbelMiracleworker Thank you! I’ve seen this explanation before but not as neatly laid out. Also the Queen Mother’s name is also noted next to the King’s name in the list of kings. She also had an important role as advisor to the king.
Cameron’s shirt is just so good. It’s soft, yet bold and abrasive in its truth. I can imagine that upsetting people in a silent way. Reminiscent of the slick slogans on tshirts of our generation that say “no one cares”. It kicks people back a bit and at least in my friend group, that statement is pretty radical and ruffles a lot of feathers.
Cameron - I love love love how you only interject when necessary. That is a great trait as an interviewer. In other words, you make the interview about the interviewee and not the interviewer. Kudos to you for thus.

Welcome home ❤️
What did you learn about Roman Catholic teaching after 56 years of study that changed your mind specifically about substitutionary atonement?
Welcome Home. I am a convert and entered the CC 17.5 years ago. Never turning back and similar to your story, I'd not ever understood, but once the light went on, after reading 3 books (God knew how to get through to me once I was actually humble and open enough to "listen") I could not jump the Tiber fast enough!
To be catholic
Requires that I adopt an artificial division between the OT and NT in which the NT takes interpretive priority and overrides the meaning of the OT at key, prophetic texts.
What did you learn that made you change your mind about substitutionary atonement?
God bless you and your family
@@dylan3456 if im being honest, I didn't have to change my mind on that because in those days I was "culturally baptist" but actually more Athiest leaning agnostic when God showed me the Church. So, I didn't even have to have the substitutionary atonement struggle until much later

I had the same sort of thing happen and was thoroughly convinced the Roman Catholic Church must be the real source of all the deepest theology.
This one sealed it for me. I had lingering doubts. Dr Hahn just revealed the Papacy to me on a whole new level.

Let’s not lose our heads and forget this is about God.

The name Catholic Church is NEVER mentioned in the Bible.
My mom converted from an Anabaptist Mennonite background after reading Rome Sweet Home. She only decided to read it after she got it a second time in the same week from two different people. I converted two years later, after spending a lot of time on Catholic Answers. This will be my eighteenth Easter in the Church. Never heard about the proper tense of Matthew 18:18. I had always puzzled on that phrasing and it makes much more sense to me now.
As a son, grandson, nephew and cousin of well meaning and faithful Baptist Pastors I was raised in a mostly anti-catholic environment, although my family respected the Christian faith of many Catholics. When I decided to study Catholic teaching I realized that it is deeper, stronger and more beautiful than I thought. I feel Catholic now.
Same! I just was confirmed into the Church on Easter after simply reading. The lies I was fed growing up almost made it easier. Like, “why would I have been lied to about literally EVERYTHING about Catholicism”
Where are you at with your discernment in this spiritual life?
Roman cult contradicts the Scriptures in every possible ways!
RCC vs BIBLE 2
1. Catholics say Mary was sinless. Yet BIBLE says Mary offered a sinner's offering. Lk 2:23-24, Lev 12:6-8, Rom 3:10.
2. Catholics say RCC clergies must be celibate. Yet BIBLE says Peter had mother in law. Mat 8:14-15, Mar 1:30-31, Luk 4:38-39.
3. Catholics say Mary was perpetually virgin. Yet BIBLE says Jesus had brothers and sisters. Mk 6:3, Mat 13:55, Mat 27:56, Mar 6:3, Mar 15:40, Mar 15:47.
4. Catholics say confess to priests. Yet BIBLE says confess to GOD directly. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6, Romans 10:9-10.
5. Catholics say drink of the literal blood of Jesus. Yet BIBLE says do not drink blood. Acts 15, Lev 7:26.
6. Catholics say pray to Mary and "saints". Yet BIBLE says do not contact the dead. Deut 18:11, Isaiah 8:19.
7. Catholics say their statues are not idols. Yet BIBLE says do not bow down to graven images (statues). Deut 4, Exo 20:4-5.
8. Catholics say Holy Water. Yet BIBLE mentions nothing about it.
9. Catholics say Peter was pope. Yet BIBLE says Peter was just a leader of the Jerusalem Church. Gal 2:9, Mat 16:18
10. Catholics say there is a seat of Peter. Yet BIBLE says nothing about it.

But, I appreciate the variety of sticking points because it keeps the Truth alive and flowing as we work on our walk Home to Rome. Pray for me. I am not yet fully Home and my family is very much against Catholicism. But, I'm on my way!
Anglicans and Lutherans believe in Real Presence as do the Assyrians, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox. Some Methodists do too.

He said "My," and generally, not individually these or those, through which it is understood that He entrusted all to him. If, therefore, the Greeks or others say that they were not entrusted to Peter and his successors, of necessity let them confess that they are not of the sheep of Christ, since the Lord says in John, "to be one flock and one Shepherd" (Jn 10,16)."

Hey I am interested in your journey to Catholicism because you are a charismatic. I have read many convert stories but there are 'relatively' fewer from the charismatic strand. I find that many charismatics are so experience orientated that the intellectual reasons for Catholicism are less likely to appeal other than a supernatural encounter where the Lord directly speaks to them to convert. What sort of charismatic pastor are you? What are your influences? Are they the Randy Clark, John Wimber type of thing? Have you heard of Ulf Ekman the megachurch charismatic leader who converted to Catholicism?
@@michellea9857 Thanks for your interest & a BIG God bless you to you and yours! So, I agree that Charismatics are a little too influenced by experience (their own or those of preachers they like, etc.) in generally charismatic areas. But, in fundamental Christian theology, i.e. Trinity, Virgin Birth, All-Things-Jesus (sinless, died for us, descended, raised, ascended for us,), need to be baptized, Angles, Demons, etc. etc. etc. I would say that they are def biblically, not experientially, oriented. Nonetheless, I used to work for, preach with, etc. a man by the name of Norvel Hayes. He was a pure-as-they-come, sincere man who genuinely walked with God. Regardless of what you may or may not think of him, his best friend for 35 years was Kenneth E. Hagin. So, I have a Word of Faith-Charismatic background but Norvel Hayes, Hagin, and def myself really don't associate with what most of the silliness that many people associate with the WOF "camp." I'm a friend of Dr. Lynn Hiles a strong charismatic preterist preacher today and another genuine, humble man of God. And yes, I am familiar with Ulf Eckman's story. “Moreover, we have biblical evidence-John 1:42-that also points to Jesus using Aramaic in the naming of Peter: “[Andrew] brought [Peter] to Jesus.
A. Carson, warites, in The Expositor’s Bible Commentary:
[T]he underlying Aramaic is in this case unquestionable; and most probably kepha was used in both clauses (“you are kepha” and “on this kepha”), since the word was used both for a name and for a “rock.” The Peshitta (written in Syriac, a language cognate with a dialect of Aramaic) makes no distinction between the words in the two clauses.”

Thanks! Will watch this
He should wrote a book about it. He has videos about it. I'd rather he wrote a book. A book is more... permanent and timeless.
He has a channel called Catholic Productions
Catholic Encyclopedia: The Pope: "The expressions binding and loosing here employed are derived from the current terminology of the Rabbinic schools. A doctor who declared a thing to be prohibited by the law was said to bind, for thereby he imposed an obligation on the conscience. He who declared it to be lawful was said to loose."
------
Binding and loosing is originally a Jewish Mishnaic phrase also mentioned in the New Testament, as well as in the Targum.
Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them."
It could have said one of the apostles' shadows. But PETER is the one that had primacy. And the people even recognized that at the time. Wow.
Good insight!

1. Catholics claim CHURCH refers to Roman Catholic Church. BIBLE says CHURCH refers to all churches. Acts 5:11, Acts 8:1, Mat 16:18. HISTORY tells us Roman Church was just one local Church a member of the Pentarchy.
2. Catholics claim Roman Church was the CHURCH CHRIST founded (First Church) or one true church. BIBLE says First Local Church was Jerusalem Church. Acts 2. Not Roman Catholic Church.

“CHURCH” refers to the Body of Christ Eph 5:30, Col 1:18 consisting of all churches. Acts 5:11, Acts 8:1 Mat 16:18.
“Churches” refers to local churches Acts 9:31, Acts 15:41 and believers Romans 16:5, 1 Cor 16:19,

6. Catholics claim outside Roman Church there is NO SALVATION. BIBLE says “apart from Jesus there is NO SALVATION”. Acts 4:12, 1 Cor 3:11.

9. . BIBLE says “believe in Jesus to be saved”. Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16.
10. Catholics claim Roman Church inherited infallible authority from Peter. BIBLE does not say that in Mat 16 or John 20 or John 21.
11. Catholics claim Roman pontiff inherited infallible authority from Peter. BIBLE does not say that in Mat 16.
12. Catholics claim bishop of ROME = the pope. BIBLE does not say that.
13. Catholics claim there is an office of bishop of bishops/universal bishop/pope. BIBLE does not speak of such an office. History tells us the first bishop of bishops came in AD590-600s.
14. Roman Church has all the false unbiblical clergies - Roman priests, roman cardinals, roman pontiff, monks, nuns, friars, … BIBLE mentions only pastors, teachers, evangelists, prophets, apostles, deacons, bishop, elders. Titus 1:5, Eph 4:11, 1 Tim 3.
15. Roman Church claim its doctrines come from traditions of Apostles. BUT 95% of roman doctrines are Not from traditions of Jesus or Apostles or Scriptures; neither practised by the Church of the Bible.

14. Catholics say Mary went straight to heaven without dying. Yet Bible says nothing about it.

Awesome. What a gift for Cameron to have access to all these elite resources; Dr. Hahn, Dr. Ortland, Jimmy Akin, Trent Horn, Suan Sona…he should record all conversations so everyone can benefit.

The earliest archeologically identified Christian church is a house church (domus ecclesiae), the Dura-Europos church, founded between 233 and 256. In the second half of the 3rd century AD, the first purpose-built halls for Christian worship (aula ecclesiae) began to be constructed.

It even pre-dates the greatest of all the Roman anti-Christian persecutions, that of Diocletian in 303-313. The church, the ruins of which were excavated in 1998, is in the form of an east-west oriented basicila, with apse and aisles. It also had a narthex and chancel. Excavation has unearthed walls up to 4.5m 14ft 9in high. During its first phase the church would have held about 60 worshipers; it was later extended to hold about 100. The building appears to have been abandoned during the presecution of 303-311, then refurbished between 313 and 330. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 363.

To be in the presence of a wise, knowledgeable man to answer your nagging questions is such a blessing.
CLAIMS of the RCC
3. Catholics claim there is only One Church. BIBLE mentions both CHURCH and Churches.
“CHURCH” refers to the Body of Christ Eph 5:30, Col 1:18 consisting of all churches. Acts 5:11, Acts 8:1 Mat 16:18.
“Churches” refers to local churches Acts 9:31, Acts 15:41 and believers Romans 16:5, 1 Cor 16:19,
4. Catholics claim to be the first believers. BIBLE says first believers were Jewish Christians. Acts 2, Acts 11:26, NOT roman catholics.
5. Catholics claim Pope is the head of the CHURCH. BIBLE says JESUS is the HEAD OF THE CHURCH. Eph 1:22, Eph 5:23, Col 1:18.
6. Catholics claim outside Roman Church there is NO SALVATION. BIBLE says “apart from Jesus there is NO SALVATION”. Acts 4:12, 1 Cor 3:11.
7. Catholics claim submit to Roman Pontiff to be saved. BIBLE says “apart from Jesus there is NO SALVATION”. Acts 4:12, 1 Cor 3:11.
8. Catholics claim devote to Mary to be saved.

1. You are equating the Catholic Church with the Western Patriarchate, which is innacurate
2. We don't believe Rome is the first local Church in a literal sense as in literal age
3. Catholic believe in a single visible Universal Church and in multiple Local Churches
4. Jewish christians weren't a denomination appart from the rest of the Early Church. There is continuity between the first christians and us
5. We claim the Pope is the visible Head of the Church as a delegate of Jesus, this doesn't contradict that Jesus is the ultimate Head of the Church
6. The Church is the Body of Christ, outside His Body there is no salvation
7. Submitt to the Roman Pontiff as in obeying Jesus who set him over us as our sheepherd
8. Praying the rosary isn't necessary for salvation in catholicism
9. Okay? And what is your point?
10.
11.
12. Whether Peter was suceeded by the Roman Bishop is a matter of history and Tradition, not of Scripture
13. We don't believe the Pope is an universal Bishop
14. Monks and nuns aren't clergy. Cardinals are just people advising the Pope and electing him. The essential hierarchy of the Church is Pope-Bishop-Priest
15. I am curious about how you came to that very interesting percentage

The Church has officially and irrevocably recognized in Vatican II that all followers of Christ out of the Visible Church (through no fault of their own) are "Separated Brethren" and we are to talk with them about our faith with gentleness and respect (as the Bible recommends!) as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, with hope to bring unity to Christ's body (as Christ Himself wished us to be!)
So, God willing, may all other interactions be like so as well! May God illuminate my brothers and sisters in these truths.

I've been a Catholic (converted at 45) and Francis has brought up so many questions, so listening to you guys was so very helpful!
I'm still a Catholic despite of confusions caused by Francis Bergoglio. May our the Holy Spirit help us.
Just remember it’s Christ’s Church not Pope Francis’. The Holy Spirit leads and works for good through the Office of Peter. We must pray for the Pope & always view him with charity. ✝️🙏❤️✝️
This was a very very good conversation.
What a very good advice Mary. Faith is from conviction in the heart and not the calculations from the head.
Read Surprised by Truth by Patrick Madrid. Start praying the rosary (all biblical). Holy Spirit will do rest in no time. God bless!!

Scott Hahn is like taking a sip from a fire hydrant as I think I’ve heard him mention his family and student describe him as. The look on their faces when he stops talking is exactly what my face looks like. What a gems we have in Scott and Kimberly Hahn.
This show needs to go viral. Exceptional on so many levels!!!
Cameron is so genuine and kind. What a beautiful heart.
I haven't listened to the episode yet, but I'm here to say that I love your show and I usually listen to the interviews while I'm cooking and eating breakfast - which is the best time of the day, imo.
I think Dr. Hahn summarized it really well at the end of the stream. It was really inspiring to hear this honest conversation.
Scott Hahn is always amazing. Very deep and sharp theology.
Cameron - I love love love how you only interject when necessary. That is a great trait as an interviewer. In other words, you make the interview about the interviewee and not the interviewer. Kudos to you for thus.
Thank you Matt and Dr. Hahn for explaining the roots of the papacy. I haven't heard it explained so well.
