That question was honestly shocking. Yes I am fully aware that there are real human beings behind the making of these games and that the industry is struggling in many ways currently. But at the end of the day I am the consumer and if I am paying $70 then I expect a certain standard of quality from what I receive. It is ridiculous to wave away every single issue with "but the developers work hard and have it rough!" as a blanket excuse. I am tired of this sentiment and I think it is actually backfiring and detracting from the urgency of the issues that developers face. It is frankly difficult to take developer struggles seriously these days with how often this excuse is used.

It is insane to me this happens in a combat centric hack n slash game with a slow pace of movement.
In fighting games if a game performs poorly and dips under 60, no one takes it seriously. That’s why the FGC largely dumped the PS3. I don’t know why hack ‘n’ slash players are not the same way.

A similar issue is very much present in the headphones space as well where manufacturers expect the users to do their work for them. So do I and from my own personal experience, Elden Ring is one of the most overhyped games because people who love FromSoft games will never admit there is a problem with games that are never truly graphically demanding but always have some sort of performance issue and this is across multiple games, multiple platforms and multiple configurations of PC. Until the FromSoft stans demand better, or at the very least hold them to the same standards as they do every other type of game in the market, we continue to get games like Elden Ring which have addictive gameplay loops which can be a bit unplayable at times because the performance is so hit or miss. And judging from Elden Ring and other games from FromSoft.....it is alot of misses!

Obviously it wasnt going to be applied to EVERY game, but we can barely scrape by 4k 30 ( or even 1080p 30 in cases like DD2). Now imagine buying a $1k-$2k graphics card that is supposed to destroy every game and then you can barely run a game past 60? Anyone would be pissed, and im saying this as someone who runs a 3060. @@gothpunkboy89 Your reply is a prefect example of why nuance is so important. Fun is subjective because there are no objective measures for it. How difficulty, art style etc. are perceived is highly individual.
Performance is objective. How you perceive it is not. But performance itself can be measured objectively. Metrics like frame rate and frame time are technical measures independent of any individuals perception.
So again: No, performance is not subjective. Performance can be judged objectively and games should be criticized if one of the very few objective metrics by which we can review them is in a bad state.

Let's recap on Elden Ring on the DLC release:
    Console:
    1) fps is just unstable in every mode despite the reality that, literally all they'd have to do is scale back whatever it is they are using for upscaling & maybe cut back on some foliage
    2) poorly optimized RT (this is consistent across the board) that eviscerates console performance
    3) so stuttery overall that certain people justify using the ps4 version on ps5
    PC:
    1) no way to manipulate framerate caps or go above 60fps
    2) janky-ass RT implementation that can look good in certain areas for a huge fps hit, and then in others do almost nothing except AO for no or almost no FPS hit
    3) absolutely zero upscaling capability in spite of the janky RT that just eviscerates performance on all but the absolute top-tier GPUs
    4) weird freezes on certain hardware (maybe all hardware, who knows, but I've noticed it & Alex points it out as well on diff specs)
And all of this nearly 2 1/2 years after release with a near full-price DLC release and we're all supposed to just say nothing because FromSoft is your boyfriend? They aren't even trying, man. I'm sorry I have to tell you, but you are in an abusive relationship. Maybe if you did stand up for yourself things might get better...
I'm so not surprised this is the response to serious crticism of anything FromSoft touches at this point. Like, it's hilarious at this point, this isn't even talking about the freaking gameplay and people still feel the need to white-knight for something that is literally observable objective reality that can be represented with data... Nobody is saying you aren't allowed to enjoy the game and because it's a juttery mess you should hate the game... They're observing how it performs on various hardware & reporting on it, as people expect them to.
Both Capcom & Team Ninja/Koei Tecmo can patch their janky in-house engine releases after the fact (Dragons Dogma 2 & Wo Long) to include features from this decade and fix optimization, but FromSoft can't? We just have to accept this because it's FromSoft? It's 100% legitimate to ask 'why not' because frankly there isn't a clear answer except perhaps 'because everyone will forgive them anyway', which is sad and worse for everyone. I like FromSoft games, that's why it sucks so much every time I play Elden Ring and think, "man, this experience could be so much better if they just gave one small fraction of a fuck"

It's goes soooooo far back with From Soft.
Just inexcusable how people have just ignored disgusting performance for absolutely no reason at all. Those writing the story and those optimising are not even the same.
Blue Point proved that a Souls game can look mind boggingly good and still have a rock solid 60fps, even with a visual setting to increase Tesselation.
From Soft simply hasn't produced anything close to that technological/technical lvl to excuse their terrible optimisation over the decades.
Inexcusable, and how they always get away with this, I have no idea. Game of the yr contender but with a 60fps mode that runs at 30-mid 40s in the p4 era, or this rubbish with ER in the P5/Series era.
Used to think way back then playing DS1 that definitely, people will call them to order with their perf issues seeing how popular the games would easily get, but that's just dwindled into pure shock seeing them always getting away with this abject laziness, as the decade rolled by.
If they want another Blue Point lvl studio remaking their games yrs later, they might as well have a banner saying that outside their buildings.

The bigger issue here is that they could just pay more for licensing. Their priorities are clearly out of order.
Both Sony & Xbox do this.
Sony's generally last for just about 2 yrs longer than Xbox/Microsoft, but a certain company by the name EA can release racing games, and have licenses last for up to 15yrs in best case. At least a decade in recent time, pretty much.
That's one whole console gen and then some, or 2 whole generations in best case.
Microsoft could just care and spend more. EA did this even when they still had a yearly game release cycle.
Instead here it's just "look, lots of cars"; gets delisted 4 yrs later. FH3 & FM7 got delisted after 4 yrs, which is still wiiiiiiild to me 💀. They needed to be hounded down for that, but that never happened. For whatever reason they managed to get away with 4yrs life cycle Racing Games...my goodness. Horizon 1 even had a 2 yr life cycle before delisting; Honestly disgusting, and the fh1 servers lated 9 yrs.
FH4 is the first one above 4 yrs, which makes it the first time they match what Sony did with Driveclub & GT Sport. Better, but should still be much better.
Ubisoft did 10yrs with The Crew 1, but that's always online, so once server shutdown later this yr, it's over over. Good lifecycle, but always online games should live for even longer imo.

1:10:20 The question from Wicca I have some massive issues with. Firstly about the layoffs in terms of the state of the industry, Miyazaki has made it very clear they are not laying off staff at From, if anything they are looking at growth but not massive expansion.
Secondly there is nothing more immersion breaking than trash frame rates, massive stutters, the game paugin then speeding back up so I completely disagree with the point that From focus on immersion as a well performing game is fundamental to this.
As Alex mentioned basic stuff like say fps above 60fps was modded into the game, this mod literally came out within hours of the base games launch and has not been officially supported, that is just pure incompetence to not be done in 2 years. Same for UW support, FoV, getting the game to 60fps on consoles.
And anyone who's played the DLC to the end will know how terrible the performance issues can be, i went from 120fps to 29fps during a boss attack.
The base game was £50 the DLC was £35, base game has sold over 25 million copies and the DLC has already sold over 5 million. From do not get a pass for making a "fun game" they are one of the worst in the AAA space for technical quality, they need to use that money to hire competent staff. Heck even paying the modders to add basic features that took them a couple hours of work would be a improvement.

As someone who has worked a bit with Unity the camera stutter issue is really annoying and not well documented/agreed upon on how you should fix it. I find that setting interpolation on the target rigidbody is not enough and does not always fix the problem, and I also would not recommend changing the physics update to 60, because ultimately that will still make physics motion weird at higher frame rates and have a hit to performance. The best solution I have found is to just not parent the camera to the rigidbody object and instead have a small script that places the camera on to an empty camera transform each frame (wherever you need the camera to be relative to player location). All that being said if a rigidbody rotates I found it can STILL cause camera stutter even after all of that so I would lock down rb rotation as well. The amount of tinkering and experimentation I had to do to make this problem go away is ridiculous it should be a one-button fix built in to the camera object by default but hey whatever Unity has other priorities I guess. I am also a total novice at game dev so maybe the pros out there have a simple solution but I haven't found it.

    • @caseydedore
      @caseydedore 3 місяці тому +4

You're pretty much finding out how everyone must address this by writing their own solvers. Keep camera control out of the physics update and don't parent the camera to a physics object directly. Since physics updates at a fixed interval and not at refresh rate it will always have some stutter problems even if interpolation helps bridge the gap slightly.
I figure Unity wouldn't "fix" the stutter incurred by parenting the camera to a physics object because that's technically behaving correctly.

Man the Elden Ring and FromSoftware fanboys are nuts!! Specially the one saying that FromSoftware made a "sensible" take on the DLC given the cost of making videogames, and the effort needed to create openworld games.
So, this people... do they have an explanation on why do Unlock FPS mods and several stuttering-fix mods released exist? How are they explaining that a guy/girl on his/her tiny little computer can upload, on his/her free time, a mod that fixes a big ammount of crap from Elden Ring all by themselves and FREE? Let me repeat this: ONE PERSON, mods the game on his/her own, without official modtools, and fixes it FOR FREE. What are you talking about money, costs and layoffs? Pretty sure these fanboys have not even tried it.
And also, What about preservation? Is it not better to have a proper game running, fully fixed, and be able to play it... let's say, 10 years in the future, with freedom to use any resolution or framerate that may be common in that future without the need to use fixes to remove stupid black bars or relocate the hud?
I get it, you like the game. But don't make a religion out of it... geez. What is wrong, is wrong. No matter how you really like it, it is still wrong. And if it's fixeable (like it's been demonstrated by modder) it should be. FromSoftware is a company, and you are a client. They're not your family, nor your friends, and as a client, you should ask for the best product that your money can buy.

It needs an entire balance overhaul, everyone is talking about performance but the game is broken in all kinds of ways, unbalanced to the point depending on what class you play the game is either mindlessly click to win (magic archer) or literally unplayable (trickster).
The big enemies are also harmless and stagger constantly just from you sneezing at them. Crowd control in general makes enemies just not do anything.
The game is not worth replaying until a total rework, I'm not sure if that'll come from Capcom or modders who I personally know are working on this.

If I go to a restaurant and order a medium steak, and i get a charred cinder, I should just shut up and eat it because the restaurant has been paying more for steak, and the busboy needs a raise, and the chef is in a shitty mood? Nevermind you paid an arm and a leg for a rare treat, life is hard for us, so fuck you and your harsh words! That's ridiculous... So is the pass people seem to extend to FROM software games that wouldn't be accepted for other studios regarding the fact that Elden Ring STILL runs like shit on PC, after all the money they made they damn well CAN, and SHOULD fix this. They should also be criticized while they don't fix it, just like the slaying EA takes form this outlet for the SAME thing all the time, among others.

Outrageous follow-up: If a new car is released and 50% of them blow up upon starting, it's okay. They cost a lot to make. Do you know how much money and time it would take to correct these engineering issues?

The more amusing this is how anyone who deals with someone who has a different opinion is instantly called an apologist.
I for example just don't care that much about the frame pacing or frame drops because they just don't effect the game all that much. Your death to a boss isn't going to be because of 5 frames dropping. It is because I doge rolled the wrong way or misread an attack and got spanked for it. I like the game, I like the variety of builds and I like the challenge. So I get called an apologist because I'm not raging at something I don't see as a big issue.

@@gothpunkboy89it’s okay that you don’t have a problem with it, but that doesn’t mean that these aren’t objective issues that everyone is dealing with as they play the game. It is apologetic in a way to reply to someone demanding a fix for these issues to say you do not care. Even if you don’t care, surely we can all agree it would be a good thing for this stuff to be fixed, right? At the absolute worst, you don’t notice a difference and those who do will be happier. So shouldn’t we all support those who call for performance fixes in Elden Ring? Or any game for that matter? Like this isn’t a game design decision that people can like or dislike, they’re just performance issues that the game would benefit from not having. There’s not really an argument to be had here beyond “it doesn’t bother me”.

    • @gothpunkboy89

@@paprikayes I said the performance issues where not as big a deal as they where making them out to be. People act like these issues make the game unplayable or will constantly get you wiped by enemies. That isn't true.
They then went off on a rant about the game because their FPS counter is more important to them then the actual game play.
Better performance is always enjoyed. But is not always nessicary. It is mildly amusing how often people talk about gameplay over visuals. Then you have a developer that embodies that spirit and people are still upset about visuals.

      @paprikayes 3 місяці тому +7

@@gothpunkboy89 I don’t mean to speak for most but I believe when people are referring to gameplay over visuals they are referring to having an issue with the graphics and visual tech introduced in the game taking priority over gameplay.
This isn’t really one of those cases, as many people, including me, feel the game is actively worse to *play* as a result of the stuttering. I don’t really find it hypocritical at all for someone to pine for both more gameplay-focused experiences and better running games. It’s really unlikely that person actually cares about their fps counter itself, but rather it’s the easiest way to describe the hitching and performance problems they are experiencing. That’s sort of a bad faith argument to portray them like that.
You may not agree that the gameplay is hampered by these problems, and I would also agree that it isn’t going to cause you to die when you otherwise would have survived while fighting a boss in most cases. Regardless of its practical impact on your ability to react to literal attacks, it is an ever present annoyance in the game that is constantly popping up to lessen your enjoyment for those who do actually care about it. Like if every 15 minutes a grating beeping noise went off for a couple seconds when you’re listening to music. It doesn’t really stop you from enjoying the parts where that doesn’t happen, and it won’t stop you from being able to hear the sounds underneath. But it definitely would negatively impact my experience overall.

Graphics and performance are two sides of the same coin for visuals. But people do like to separate connected things so they can complain about one but not another.
This stress tests their argument and shows it is wanting. They put visuals over game play.
      > This isn’t really one of those cases, as many people, including me, feel the game is actively worse to play as a result of the stuttering.
And there are people who would say a solid 30 fps is unplayable. And people who would say a solid 60 fps is unplayable. There is always going to be someone complaining about performance because it doesn't reach their arbitrary idea of what proper performance is like.
It is why I have such a hard time taking any of these complaints seriously. No one is ever happy.
      > Regardless of its practical impact on your ability to react to literal attacks, it is an ever present annoyance in the game that is constantly popping up to lessen your enjoyment for those who do actually care about it.
And those tend to be the same people who say they can't play a game at 30 fps and even complain about games with 60 fps caps. Even when they run at solid 60fps because it looks stuttery to them. Because to them anything less then 120 is stutters.

I'm not defending fsr being worse but zooming in to a high degree and replaying gameplay slowed down by a significant amount highly distorts the perception everyone will experience at normal viewing distances at higher frame rates. Sitting 2 ft in front of a 4k 48" TV is not what the vast majority of people do (viewers of this channel would be outliers of the larger population). General population are also not going to be so obsessed with looking for discrepancies in visual fidelity as someone with an agenda to document it. I appreciate the work these guys do in terms of analysis, and you can get an objective viewpoint from their findings, but the experience in real life is generally not as overblown if you are just normally playing the game.

No one ever plays a game by zooming in by 200% and playing the game at a quarter of the framerate. The problem with this type of analysis is that is so far removed from how a game looks and performs in normal play that it seems like obsessing over the smallest details that never present themselves in regular play. It's a sign that we are at the point graphically where we are looking for something wrong rather than looking for entertainment and finding something wrong in regular play.

Hacking to game to change it to 60hz won't fix the problem if you are at a higher frame rate. It also wont fix the problem because the fixed update loop may not sync up with the render loop even if both are 60hz.
