1:16 Not a great level of finish to the grey sector - it meets the inner black hour circle, but not the outer minute circle. Then at 1:29 it does meet the outer circle, so it's not even consistently off.
TheEnglishRedneck45 yes this is unfortunately an entry level budget watch... imagine if you would see this crap on brands like Grand Seiko or Glashütte Original - would never happen!!
Mike D I meant that this particular model is entry level budget aiming to get new customers into JLC. Either way of course it is terrible that a brand like JLC misses a quality issue like on that dial considering the price of the watch!
That could be a specular highlight caused by the depth of the edge of the surface - it isn't really clear from that shot alone. It appears less visible at 1:43, too.
Why would you think that a simple steel Master Control Date would seem like a watch worth above $11,000? These sort of statements are giving Hodinkee a reputation lately that they're advertising, rather than reviewing some time pieces.
But everything he says is a question. You can clearly hear it when he speak. He goes up in pitch at the end of every sentence. So it's not an ad, he's just asking us a lot of questions.
Umar H yeah i think this watch looks more expensive for its price.Mainly because of the finishing and details of the watch.Just look at the movement compare with rolex, tag, omega and other watch brands for under 10,000.
considering that the patek 5296g-001 sector dial, which looks similar is starts at $27,000, i don't think that the statement about the jlc is that far off. there sure does seem to be a lot of "reverse watch snobs" around now a days. if horology isn't your hobby, or your focus is on more affordable brands, then by all means, please enjoy that. no need to be superior or snotty about how much more affordable your watch is compared to this one.
English speaking person would pronounce it Jay-ger. You'd only pronounce it Yeager if you were German or if you were a confused English speaker who knows how to pronounce Jeagermeister and thinks that this watch is made by them. Or if you worked for Hipstinkeee and wanted to go against the flow, be original and hip and edgy, and this is most likely why he pronounced it Yeager.
I've asked the reps at JLC how they prefer it be pronounced, and they seem to be fine with two ways for pronouncing "Jaeger". One of which is how it's said in this video ("yayger"). The other is more phonetically "zhayzhur". If JLC doesn't even mind, then I wouldn't get your panties in a bunch over it. It's more important to get "LeCoultre" right, and he does good enough.
This may be the most perfect dress watch I’ve ever seen. Saw this watch and I want to buy one. I can’t seem to find many to compare online. Is this a limited run watch or is out of production. Classic watch. The blue and silver. Wowsers
problem in my eyes is: If you scrap the JLG name on the dial and replace it with Tommy Hilfiger or some other high street fashion brand, this has the look of a 150 EUR fashion piece.
I bet if this watch had a Rolex logo or Patek you would not even be making a comment. JLC make proper watches and they are the only brand producing a watch of this quality in that price bracket. I dare you to name another watch on par with it.
JLC makes incredible quality watches but I'd have to agree that the dial in this particular case is nothing special at all in terms of craftsmanship, although I do like the aesthetic a lot.
While I really like the design, I disagree that this looks like a watch that would cost more than twice the asking price. It only seems that way because it says JLC on the dial. Otherwise I thought it looked rather plain in real life because the dial is flat and everything is printed. But that isn't a bad thing. There are plenty of people who like something clean, simple and understated as their daily watch. And this fits that description perfectly.
I really don't see why a stock standard watch with a not overly impressive 36 hour power reserve should cost double... oh right it's Jaeger and they're paying for this. My bad.
Matt Ashe the same could be said when jumping from a seiko skx to a hamilton khaki field for instance. not a massive jump, but more or less double. i think you get a far better watch in the hamilton in that scenario. with regard to jlc, we are talking top of the tree, all hand made movements, not eta's or anything else, so when you are considering the other players at the top, als, pp, vc, jlc are a bargain. you would pay $25k for this in a patek.
bighands69 They produce amazingly boring watches famed for their 1000 hour test, yet when Don Haines (pennfootball71) bought his first JLC Reverso, he had to return it to the factory due to a defective movement. When will you guys learn that highend watches is nothing but brand prestige and power?
Reviewing a watch without the factory strap is arrogant. Reviewing a watch without the factory strap *and* putting on a strap you sell is disingenuous.
That jumped out at me too. It's probably a hodinkee strap; they shoot a lot of watches for their articles and videos, wearing their straps. Check the shop on their site
still great but hard to truly trust hodinkee now that they have sold out a bit. can't know if this was paid for or not anymore. wish Ben was true to what made this idea and company so important. most won't see in the beginning. hope they don't go completely commercial
The comments below make me laugh, if youre not here to appreciate an in-house movement / mechanical watch then go get a quartz, wait do you even know the difference?
I think all the negative comments are spot on. For the price, this watch looks bland. The latest Omega aquaterra models are cheaper, much more impressive looking with much longer power reserves, much more water resistant and seriously anti magnetic. And it's cheaper.
So you were unimpressed until he mentioned the price? That means you didn't really like the watch. You're just excited about the brand name. You'll get it so you can say you own a JLC.
Well since this is a Swiss made watch you have to consider that in Switzerland German (Schwyzerdütsch), French and Italian are all official languages. I don't have a problem if someone pronounces the word Jaeger as in the video. It is the correct way to pronounce it if you are form Italian or German speaking part in Switzerland. However this watchmaker comes from the western part of the country where they speak French, so the above suggestion of pronunciation of JAEGER should indeed be JAY-JER. The problem is the how he pronounces the word LE-COULTRE- In any of the three languages you don't say 'Lecoult'. -postfix RE- is always pronounced but in French very slightly (i.e. French name Alexandre - you don't pronounce 'Alexand', but ALEXANDre with slight R in the end. Italian and Schwyzerdütsch way of pronunciation should be LE-COULTRE as it is written. How Stephen pronounces the L-Coultre is incorrect. Please go see any video of Marc André Deschoux who is from Geneva and pay attention on how he pronounces Jaeger Le-Coultre.
Jaeger might have been a Frenchman but he is from Alsace, a region bordering Germany. His name is likely of Germanic descent, as the name for "Hunter" is common in German (or English). Jaeger is not a French name at all though, yes, the watchmaker was a French citizen. It is as if a watchmaker in Texas were named "Martinez." He might be American, but you wouldn't be totally wrong by putting a Spanish twist to Marrrrtinezzz. :-)
To me, the dial looks like the Aston Martin instrument style homage JLC used in the past. Was never crazy about... just OK. The movement does not look as nicely finished as my 2002 Master Reserve. (which I love. and is still unbelieveably accurate) Cheers
I hope JLC release a no date version of this watch. Whoever designed this date location needs to be hanged! Would have been far much better if they move the date window out by 1mm with a new date wheel.
Wow, they sure know how to ruin an otherwise great dial with those clashy colors for markers, just like what Rolex did to ill the Air-King and Seiko has done to ruin the PADI, for example.
So....why do you pronounce Automatique like a french person, but not pronounce the brand like a French person (the correct way). Just say AutomatiC like an American if you're going to pronounce the brand like an American. Or perhaps learn to pronounce the brand properly if you're so inclined to say automatic like a French. Continuity is professionalism in your world.
38 hour power reserve???. That doesn’t fly anymore. That’s the main reason I’ll never buy one of those. For the money, there are much better watches out there with better movements and power reserve and to mention, look way better.
atl3630 i have my omega since 3 years and i love it every single day more and more. This jlc isn't that bad but it is to expensive! I would spend some thousands more and buy an AP royal oak. That gonna be my next watch!
rado19901 "Looks better" IMO this looks 10 times better than your omega. It isn't as respected company and its movement doesn't have that luxorious finishing. I woul have 50 watches on the list with 5000 before buying yours. Just my opinion
Your are paying for the name. They are going to have to do better than that to attract new people who aren't Rich. Why would I want a 38-hour power reserve when the standard to hit is now 80 hours? Rolex is suffering from this lack of detail as well. They are behind the times with their Cyclops lense and their low power reserve. All of their models except the highest priced ones are stuck in the 42-48 hour range. I can get a Grand Seiko that gives me more value that this watch on this video for less money. I'm not paying for the name. It's a nice, but overpriced watch. If I want gold I can go buy an ounce at the store.
I hate 3 oclock crowns. that's why I'll never buy a swiss watch. they all have 3 oclock crowns - so boring. the swiss are so boring and conservative sometimes.
one of the most beautiful and classy watches i've ever seen. Says "I have money" so quietly.

Fuck seiko. Pile of shit. You've been watching too much of that shit show of a human Kevin o Deary
I watched a JLC promo video not to long ago and I swear that is not how you pronounce Jaeger.
it cant be pronounced different ways.
no, it should be pronounced as "JER-JER LE COUT"
jer jer? lmao no. if your in the US like Hodinkee is people pronounce it
Yeager, if you wanna try to be correct its called "Jae-jear".
"Our Maison - "Beyond the gesture" by Jaeger-LeCoultre", 10 secs in. That's it.
Is this a special edition? How many made. Wow, that is one of the prettiest watches I’ve ever seen. I want one.
I have this watch and I love this. Got mine last October 20, 2017 on their flagship store here in Manila
congrats
Listening to an American pronounce Jaeger LeCoultre is like listening to someone running their finger nails down a blackboard.
Pretty sure they had a whole Friday Live dedicated to pronunciations as well.
I've asked the reps at JLC how they prefer it be pronounced, and they seem to be fine with two ways for pronouncing "Jaeger". One of which is how it's said in this video ("yayger"). @@johnrobie9694 of course they don't mind, they just want you to hand over some money and take a watch😂
Constructive comment thanks 445CR. Making the internet one douchey comment at a time.

My god that time/date version is stunning. Great price at five thousand dollars.

No way this piece looks like a 10.000 dollar watch.
maybe they should stud it with diamonds next time!
problem in my eyes is: If you scrap the JLG name on the dial and replace it with Tommy Hilfiger or some other high street fashion brand, this has the look of a 150 EUR fashion piece.
I think we all can assume why he made such a statement. It's more like a paid advertisement rather than an honest review
I bet if this watch had a Rolex logo or Patek you would not even be making a comment. JLC make proper watches and they are the only brand producing a watch of this quality in that price bracket.

Beautiful and restrained design
Wow. That watch is so classy and simple. Is it limited run? Aren’t any online.
You guys really need to post more often on UA-cam!
Is a nomos watch with same price point or even less got a fancier finished movement in person?
it somehow reminds me of the SNK SEIKO 5, which is not a bad thing
Do you think it will lost value in time?? Thx for the anwser
Please tell me about that strap ! Because all I see in the jlc website is the blue one
love, love, love this watch. My dream watch but I can't fight it anywhere.

Does having a sector dial knock it down a few pegs in terms of dressiness?
I'm just hung up on applied indices, I think they would help.
1:11 look at the hands and the print on the dial.. What are those ugly white dots?? The QC of JLC is really letting down nowadays.
Really interested in a JLC master control date with this strap but I can't find this strap on the JLC website, any ideas?

Looks like a Timex watch from Sears man. Don't kid yourself.
I'm not so impressed by the print of de hourmarkers and black center ring...in macro you can see that the black center ring is no round...

How can you be so enthusiastic about watches and not find out how to pronounce Jaeger-LeCoultre correctly?
Potato partato same shit
Anti Midas eayger le cool
Looooool
Anti Midas to be fair, he pronounces it the "german way". As Jaeger is a german word. So he is not too wrong
Jaeger-LeCoultre is a Swiss company, and both Jaeger and LeCoultre were French.
Looks like another advertisement to me.. what happend to Hodinkee...
An advertisement for their own straps as well. Tacky.

They seem to line up to me
we must forgive him for the pronunciation of Jaeger as he had just finished watching Pacific Rim.
The way that date window cuts into the inner dial utterly kills this design for me. So beautiful otherwise but it looks half designed.
I was thinking meh, then he said the price and i did a double take, might get rid of one of my subs for it
get the chrono
So you were unimpressed until he mentioned the price? That means you didn't really like the watch. You're just excited about the brand name. You'll get it so you can say you own a JLC.
He just said a date watch is Technically Identical w.r.t Chronograph and a Dual timer
Imho this would be better suited as a manusl wind
Looks like a timex
not really to my taste. bland, nothing special about the movement and still almost 6 thousand bucks? how is that good value?
its thin ... and its jlc
Is that really how you pronounce it?
no
Nope, Jaeger was a frenchman therefore pronounced his name sort of like JAY-JER. It's not Jagermeister, it's a luxury watch
it should be like "jay-jer le coot"
Well since this is a Swiss made watch you have to consider that in Switzerland German (Schwyzerdütsch), French and Italian are all official languages. Wholesome
Want to love based on the price, but it's just so bland. Would try to target another MC piece, maybe RDM or moon?
>$10k for a 3 hander, with a regular movement that doesnt do anything spectacular ? I m sorry but that s just too much ego JLC and Hodinkee
With the white strap it kinda looks like a ladies watch. I personally would go for a geographic watch with the dark blue strap.
