@idguy nice to see you back in your lane… pointing out the key design elements that are so often overlooked. Ironically, now I’ll be on look-out for sector dials! 👍🏻😉
I'll take the Longines Heritage, please! Unbeatable bang per buck for those of us who can't do 5 figure watches (i.e. most of us). But you did it a disservice with most of those shots, just put it on the brown leather strap and be done. As for the dreamscape collection, my stars that Laurent Ferrier is a stunner. It would grace the collection of the deepest of pockets.
Longines is Longines at this point 😉 I cannot recommend them enough. Automatic Chrono? Check. Minimalist Dress watches? Check. Original designs? Check. Value for money? Check. GMT complication that's COSC certified etc etc? Check. Does it get better? 🥃
@@ID-Guy seconded. One of the faves in my modest collection is the Record bluedial 38.5mm. Underrated and gets little love next to the newer Longines lines, but i just love it. Even number Arabics, impeccable sunburst, domed sapphire, mighty wrist presence despite its modest size..and the hands are perfection. Then come the tech specs and you know all about those. But hey, it's just a 30m WR dress watch 😁. Love your work, IDG! Big fan. KBO.
@@markikn3183 Classic 1950's style in a modern size, what's not to like? 😉 Thanks again for taking the time to watch the clip Otto and have a great end to your weekend!
This analysis was very interesting--and nothing like it exists among UA-cam watch channels. It's incredible how people just look past sector dials when they are so distinctive and inherently interesting. The grey Longines Heritage Classic was in a Longines display cabinet in an area store for a looong time. I saw it when I bought a different Longines half a year ago. It was around a bunch of dive watches and other creations. No offense to those, but this is iconic and at a great price. I asked why it was still there, and the rep was a bit puzzled too. It was in a massive box (why does Longines do this?). When the box was opened and the watch placed in it, the light caught the dial and the result was stunning. The blue NATO second strap added a color contrast alongside the watch in the box, showing how different straps would alter the appearance. The reps their were, I believe, honestly impressed. I suppose it's better that the mass buy Longines dive watches over Daniel Wellington or Invicta.
It's always going to be a personal preference thing at the end of the day. For us, designs and styles like that are "supplementary" I mean my Longines model was a black dial pilot chronograph 😆 But seeing that newly released CK589 has gotten the community excited all of a sudden (many are going out to pick them up). Maybe that's what the sector dial needs? A bit more romance (maybe a higher price tag & less offensive design?) 🥃
Great video. Echo other viewers that it's really great use of 3rd party footage- but SO watchable! (Compliment intended) Also greatly appreciated scholarship: watches (at least the purchase of) are a battle between head and heart and you bring a good dose of rationalisation to what often seems a frivolous theme. Very good stuff, please continue, many thanks!
I had a 5296G-001 (Calatrava date with sector dial) which I sold last summer after I acquired my 5212A. It was an exquisite piece. If I had some minor criticisms: the size was a tad small for an everyday wear; it had no hacking seconds; the dial (though beautiful) did lack contrast when viewed from a distance - the printed sector markings effectively paled out to white. But it was nevertheless a great watch - among the best I've owned.
And your 5212 is a gem... still so chuffed you managed to pick it up Jay! Thank you for the feedback on the 5296 (it's always grand to hear an owners perspective) Have a superb end to your weekend 🥃
For my birthday this year i bought myself the Baltic HMS 002 Sector dial in silver,it is such a lovely watch filled with detail.I have wanted a sector dial watch for sometime The Baltic fills this desire.I do desire the CK859 re edition.
As always, a well put together video for us to all appreciate. Thank you. Love the hands on the Omega. Put them on the Longines and I’d be even happier. Love Longines for their history, still not yet valued as they should be…
I'd love to see the same for Longines. It deserves waaaaay more love (something tells me it's slowly happening) And thank you for taking the time to watch the clip Dave! 🥃
I love how the Mido Multifort Patriomony uses the inner circle to postion the date window above the 6 without looking out of place like a random floating box. 3, date, 9, 12 dials can sometimes look a bit top heavy to me, so I love how the execution of the date window in this watch preserves the 6 hour marker.
I’d consider myself to be an Omega fan boy but wasn’t really aware of that beautiful sector dial model. I think you’ve just presented me with my next watch! 😂 the Longines has been on my radar for a while and is also stunning. Great vid 👍
Fantastic video; my favorite recent video in watch collecting. Great explanation on the characteristics of the sector dial. I’ve got a Kurono Chronograph II White “Shiro” that has been giving me sector vibes; what you said about concentric circles and crosshairs helps me understand and appreciate the dial on this watch more.
Thanks for a great video. I really like the Longines heritage sector dial and especially the HODINKEE version they did recently - with the cosc movement an added bonus. I think dressier watches will start to become more popular.
I love sector dials. If you put the CK859 hands on the cream Longines you'd have a winner, and affordable. The positioning of the date window on the JLC isn't quite right, as I see it. But the Omega at 2:37 is very nice - what is that?
As soon as I saw the sepia tone, I thought WHAT?..I initially thought you stuffed up the colour balancing until you mentioned it, very nice touch Once again an excellent video presentation, informative and educational 👍
I am surprised you didn’t mention the Habring Erwin Massena LAB01 and LAB02. And the Patek Philippe reference 96. Both are exemplary sector dials. Did I mention I like sector dials 🤔?
Habring was on my mind throughout the recording and I never wrote it down... it's so bad 😆 There was also mention that I missed the Cornes de Vache... shameful. Luckily I was savvy enough to include the 5296 haha! But they are gorgeous. It's so tempting to pick one up after making a video like this 🥃
Thanks for another great look at such an interesting design. The JLC series is one I think about a lot in terms of my own collection. I went for the mainline Master Control Chronograph rather than the sector dial variant, preferring the more richly appointed, appliqué dial. With that said, the clarity and contrast of the sector dial is so striking, particularly with the rather vivid blue tachymeter, that seeing photos always has me questioning my choice.
I bought the Dolce Vita and I couldn’t be more pleased. It looks much better on the wrist, even with a 19cm wrist, the smaller model is perfectly sized.
I cannot recommend Longines enough. To this day, still the best brand I've bought. Price, value for money, build quality, quality of movement (the list goes on) they do such a fine job with original designs. Love them! 🥃
Thank you for this video. I have long been a fan of the sector dial. I have been looking for one that will work for me , and that one i can afford. They do get a bit pricey, and i work outdoors, so i really should get one that can manage a little water and dirt.
excellent video......didn't know there were other brands that had sector dial refs other than Omega and Longines.....I'll have to take a look at them as I'm into vintage inspired timepieces and I see a sector dial reference in my future......one thing that irks me thought....is when a brand chops off an hour marker, like the "6" on the Longines Heritage Classic....shame because I really like that one, it's at my price point, but my OCD can't look past that design deficiency....
Wow not only is IDguy wearing a collared shirt, he's gone *full sepia!* So glad Omega is taking the rotors off movements to thin them out but I do wish they did something to make it look a more like it was supposed to be a manual winding movement and a little less ugly. On the whole its progress and this is a GREAT looking watch.
Great discussion of some fabulous watches! The JLC Master Chronograph is one of the best looking modern watches, full stop! Retro done right! Chrono sub-registers and sectors - oh my days! I'm also a huge fan of the Longines (actually, I think it's design is better than the JLC Master date). That LF was very cool, as were the Baltics. I think the Omega is very nice, but a little big, even accounting for the ability of sector dials to shrink the watch. Several Reversos are worth checking out for a rectangular take on sector design...
Such a great design. You're right as usual , they are so underrated. To me they scream elegance and precision, with chronographs adding a sports touch. The kind of watch you'd expect an architect or "Designer" to wear. Absolutely love the Omega but as usual the great balance of quality and value , Longines strikes again. The 9 and 3 applied radially just work so well and so many of these watches have such elegant heat blued sword or syringe hands. From an enthusiasts point it's hard to believe these watches are not in the line up of all the leading players and are sort after. However I guess in our current sports watch dominated market , their dressier, quirkier design just doesn't cut it. I'd love a sector dial , but just how big do you let your watch lust list get? Thinking of selling my old M3, if I buy a Morgan I could get a sector Ha!
Very nicely said Mark and I agree, so much diversity and value (and fun) to be found in this segment). The wannabe's are chasing everything that's Instagram worthy 😉 And as for selling your M3, not a bad call to free up some funds haha! Get yourself a hatchback and pocked the rest! Classic cars tally up the cash badly... This coming from a guy who bought a '68 Beetle as his first car and modded the hell out of it 😆
I'm still trying to figure out if the VC Fifty Six can count as a sector dial. It has sector-like features. Extra points for the numerals being applied as well.
I adore a sector dial and how it was birthed via function and military application. That the division into sectors, or added complication, aided 'at a glance' legibility. A well executed sector dial - 34mm to 39mm (depending on the piece, depending on the wrist) on a Forstner Ladder or Beads of Rice bracelet is, to me, the epitome of a modern dress watch. Masculine, bordering on rugged and undeniably elegant. The Serica California TXD is a great under the radar contender, and the Baltic Bicompax MkII is impressive but as you said, Longines do it so well and offer hetitage at a price point that works well for a dress watch. Re your Tudor; I'm beginning to think that maybe you picked up one of the last Asian market two-tone Date-Day's that had the forums in a ruckus not long ago?
@@ID-Guy it’s becoming a problem… I fall in love with watches more quickly than I’m able to afford them 🙃 every time I’m set on one and saving for it, another one drops to try to drive me off my path
Two years ago I commented on the Longines Heritage classic sector dial and how it was a great addition to any collection. I think I have changed my mind. The Baltic HMS 002 is stunning. I love all the numerals being shown. I also love that the second hand is almost invisible.
They're all from another planet (when we look at todays watch climate) and I agree, always a lover of full numerals. Man, that CK859 is something else... what a great "heirloom" watch it would be to hand down one day! Hope you're doing well Karl (I've managed to kick the bug luckily after 3 weeks) 🥃
As you stated in the video, the sector dial is an exemplary exercise in design: proper line weight, spacing, legibility, readability etc. I'm a wee bit obsessive compulsive so if I'm tasked to design a sector dial I'd probably go crazy and have meltdown 😄. Furthermore, aren't sector dials precursors for even more "extreme" dials like Breitling's Navitimer with its bombardment of sectors on top of other sectors? Anyhoo, sector dials are cool and I need to check 'em out more 👍. Cheers 🍺.
You could be spot on with your analysis of Sectors eventually evolving into those insane (Omega Chronoscope) looking dials with Tachy's, Tele's etc. Great shout! Man, they are so gorgeous... I'm wondering if I should try source the Hodinkee Longines model...or sell a kidney for the Omega? 😆 Have a great end to your weekend brother and thank you as always for stopping by! 🥃
And I missed out on some really special dials that I'm kicking myself about 😆 (Vacheron Cornes de Vache) Oh well, can't get 'em all. Have a great end to your Sunday Eric!
Amazing video, really man every time I think my collection is complete, you put out a video and tempt me to buy another jajajajaja. In all seriousness I’ve been eyeing to buy a dedicated dress watch, and recently the sector dial, especially in tuxedo form is calling me, I’d like to ask the following, based on your description, and although they’re from a different time, does the polerouter count as a sector dial, I say it due to that alternating finish between the outer and inner dial with the crosshairs that make the polerouter, well a polerouter.
Longines or Baltic? I really like the longines dial but I don't have a lot of cash to blow. If I get the Baltic, I'd have enough in my budget to buy another watch to diversify my collection, plus more to spare.. But I would be getting a lower quality movement and a less refined build finish. Thoughts?
Wow, this is a really tough decision. I feel for you. I have to disagree on "less refined build finish" - I suggest you go look at other videos on the Baltic. The finishing is incredible. Also if you are a fan of acrylic/hesalite crystal, the Baltic offers that too. The only thing you would sacrifice is indeed a lower quality movement. HOWEVER, the story is little more complicated than that. The Longines movement has a smoother second hand's sweep (3.5hz vs Miyota 8315's 3hz on the Baltic), while ALSO has 4 hours of power reserve (64 vs 60). It also uses free sprung balance, in addition to having a silicon balance spring - which is huge. Both of the mentioned features immensely improves a watch's accuracy, and in the case of the silicon balance spring - anti magnetism too. All these SWATCH group movements are easily within COSC standard OUT OF THE BOX. Free sprung balance on the other hand, while improves the watch positional variance, is a PAIN in the butt to regulate, if you do not have a special equipment. If you have any intentions of DIY regulation, Longines is not the way to go. So it really is the movement that you are paying additional $2000 for (plus the brand name). Because honestly Baltic's finishing is incredible on its own, and as someone who has always loved vintage watches' design AND purpose, acrylic crystal has always been preferable to me, no matter how much AR coating other brands are applying on their sapphire crystal. TLDR: you're paying $2000 more for an incredible movement but is MUCH harder to regulate. Baltic's finishing punches WAY above its price, and I prefer its hesalite crystal. I hope that my comment helps you decide. Cheers!
Does anyone know how to buy the OG bracelet that comes with the black variant for the Longines? I want to purchase the silver variant but it only comes with leather strap options :(
Universal Genève and Omega had some great sector dialed watches in the 1940s. Video also seems a little incomplete without mentioning the spectacular JLC Memovox sector watches in the 1960s
Nuts, right? I should've studied them up more before doing this (I'd imagine they're made to order and out of most people's ranges) But such a clean, concise look. Exactly from the 30's in all its glory 😉
I should've studied them up before the presentation but man... what a great use of lines. Really gives you that "ruler" feel with how it's been done. Also just love the proportions! Good shout Josh 🥃
It's strange becuase the JLC was on my radar for a couple of years but never enough to make me part with money. Although the price of the omega is pretty much the same and I accept the finish isn't comparable to JLC I saw that omega and put the order in Immediately.
That CK859... some designs never age and this machine, I thought "Heirloom Worthy" when it came out. Such a great design of its time with no "fluff" on the caseback or anything. Just a simple, clear, everyday wearer with Omega's build quality. Ah, I'll be holding thumbs for you George! 🥃
Check out the Raymond Weil Millesime it will blow your mind you should do a review on it it’s a testament to the sector dial was eying on the Longines but once I saw this was considering this one now comes in White, Black , Salmon Gold with white it has its hands like F.P Journe. With the look trust me.
The place was ghoulish-looking, but I was past minding such impressions and made at once for the staircase revealed by my flashlight-after a hasty glance at my watch, which shewed the hour to be 2 a.m. ~ The Shadow over Innsmouth Thats what i think of when watches are in 30s style.
I'm a philistine not knowing this was Lovecraft... Got to listen to an audiobook of this tonight! Ah, the ATMOSPHERE! Loved Cthulhu and Dunwich! Thanks for sharing brother 🥃
Those 5296's are charmers. In steel they'd be uber collectable and I agree, like the JLC Master Control, it would make it 10x more wearable as a daily 🥃
Omega has once again, hit a grand slam. The baltic design in better than the longines, in that (on the baltic) the 12 o'clock line breaks at the mfg. name on the dial.
What a cool looking Mido! Thanks for sharing this Michael (I've definitely seen it in articles before) And man... Imagine the Omega in Platinum? All the metals? I'm so down for that! 🔥
The real vintage Omega watch are available . If care is taken you can an Omega Vintage watch which is affordable and reliable. The Omega watches are very will built. I own several.
I love that the sector is undervalued it means you can pick up the Longines Sector used for £900 and never sell it - the omega is amazing but a bit too busy to my tastes, stick to your sports watches insta man - leave the proper pieces to the enthusiasts
Love it David 😆 It's true, even this video won't push interest to owning Sector dials. Must say, between the JLC and Omega, I'd take both! The CK589 I see as an "Heirloom Piece" and the JLC just a phenomenal daily wearer. It's amazing how dynamic their designs and styles are for such a small niche 🥃

Excellent video. Thanks for putting this together. Cheers.
And thank you for taking the time to watch the clip Oogie! Really means a lot when anyone can take the time out of their Sunday 🥃
@@ID-Guy Maybe.
The black dial Omega at 2:37. Oh my heavens.
Awesome video! The new Chopard L.U.C. Qualité Fleurier is stunning.
For my birthday this year i bought myself the Baltic HMS 002 Sector dial in silver,it is such a lovely watch filled with detail.I have wanted a sector dial watch for sometime The Baltic fills this desire.I do desire the CK859 re edition.
i agree totally, total class and shows a simple yet intrinsic engineering feel-denotes sort of like a time machine.
Brilliant! A history lesson and a lesson in industrial design.
Thanks!
Great shots in the vid such beautiful and evocative watches.👍
I’d consider myself to be an Omega fan boy but wasn’t really aware of that beautiful sector dial model. I think you’ve just presented me with my next watch! 😂 the Longines has been on my radar for a while and is also stunning. Great vid 👍
Excellent presentation of my favorite style of watch. Thank you 🙏
Fantastic video; my favorite recent video in watch collecting. Great explanation on the characteristics of the sector dial. I’ve got a Kurono Chronograph II White “Shiro” that has been giving me sector vibes; what you said about concentric circles and crosshairs helps me understand and appreciate the dial on this watch more.

Great video as always mate - and I am also a huge sector dial fan 😍
Thanks for a great video. I really like the Longines heritage sector dial and especially the HODINKEE version they did recently - with the cosc movement an added bonus.
I think dressier watches will start to become more popular.
I love sector dials. If you put the CK859 hands on the cream Longines you'd have a winner, and affordable. The positioning of the date window on the JLC isn't quite right, as I see it. But the Omega at 2:37 is very nice - what is that?
As soon as I saw the sepia tone, I thought WHAT?..I initially thought you stuffed up the colour balancing until you mentioned it, very nice touch
Once again an excellent video presentation, informative and educational 👍
Very informative video. I did not know anything about sector dial watches before. Thanks 🍻
It's so tempting to pick one up after making a video like this 🥃
@@ID-Guy Also, luxury brands like Voutilainen, and indie brands like Sartory apply a loose version of a sector dial. Take care!
I don't own a sector dial ... (as I double check my collection) but I'd definitely give Longines a hard look.
It's a pity that most have a WR of 30m's or so... We need "dive styled" Sector models damnit! 😉
Tried the longines heratige sector recently - exquisite.
An amazing video and compilation of designs. 👏🏽
excellent video......didn't know there were other brands that had sector dial refs other than Omega and Longines.....I'll have to take a look at them as I'm into vintage inspired timepieces and I see a sector dial reference in my future......one thing that irks me thought....is when a brand chops off an hour marker, like the "6" on the Longines Heritage Classic....shame because I really like that one, it's at my price point, but my OCD can't look past that design deficiency....
Wow not only is IDguy wearing a collared shirt, he's gone *full sepia!*
So glad Omega is taking the rotors off movements to thin them out but I do wish they did something to make it look a more like it was supposed to be a manual winding movement and a little less ugly. On the whole its progress and this is a GREAT looking watch.
Excellent presentation!
I tend to sleep on sector dials, but damn they are lovely. Great video!
This coming from a guy who bought a '68 Beetle as his first car and modded the hell out of it 😆
on independents, check out the massena magraph … an absolute beauty, classic sector dial (and a superb movement!)
I'm still trying to figure out if the VC Fifty Six can count as a sector dial. It has sector-like features. Extra points for the numerals being applied as well.
Wonderful presentation
The Laurent Ferrier is drop dead gorgeous, such an exquisit time pice. The issue I have with the Calatrava is that the minute hand is too short.
I want a sector dial watch, I was dead-set on the longines until the new omega came out. Goddamn, that watch looks good!
It's annoyingly good, right? I'm thinking "Heirloom watch" every time I see it... Longines and Omega with their home-runs. It gets tiring I tell you 😆
@@ID-Guy it’s becoming a problem… I fall in love with watches more quickly than I’m able to afford them 🙃 every time I’m set on one and saving for it, another one drops to try to drive me off my path
That was an education for me , thank you ;)
And I missed out on some really special dials that I'm kicking myself about 😆 (Vacheron Cornes de Vache) Oh well, can't get 'em all. Have a great end to your Sunday Eric!
@@ID-Guy just your natural aversion to The Bulls ;)
@@ericb8888 Don't get me started hahaha! I doubt anybody here would get that reference 🍻
Dang it, now you've got me looking at sector dials....
Another superb video.
That Patek is and will always be the king of sector dial watches.
My pick would be the Longines DolceVita sector dial.
Those gondolo style cases are too cool. Man, we need more rectangle watches from brands 🥃
Cheers!
@@anhphan2049-d3q thanks for sharing! I ended up waiting and my preferences changed. now I wanna get the new longines 39mm Zulu time instead 😂
Love the one at 2:22
Nuts, right? I should've studied them up more before doing this (I'd imagine they're made to order and out of most people's ranges) But such a clean, concise look. Exactly from the 30's in all its glory 😉
I love sector dials. The AdC is the nicest modern version in my opinion.
I should've studied them up before the presentation but man... what a great use of lines. Really gives you that "ruler" feel with how it's been done. Also just love the proportions! Good shout Josh 🥃
@@ID-Guy exactly! I love how they convey so much info without the use of numerals.

The Longines Classic wasn't it a collaboration with hodinkee ?
Great.. now i want a sector dial watch ugh.
You're one of the best Beatles tracks ever 😉
The Omega CK859 is nice, but not for 7k.
Imagine they gave it to us for 3K? What a killer it would be 🥃
It's strange becuase the JLC was on my radar for a couple of years but never enough to make me part with money.
I love the sector dial
The place was ghoulish-looking, but I was past minding such impressions and made at once for the staircase revealed by my flashlight-after a hasty glance at my watch, which shewed the hour to be 2 a.m. ~ The Shadow over Innsmouth
Thats what i think of when watches are in 30s style.
I'm a philistine not knowing this was Lovecraft... Got to listen to an audiobook of this tonight! Ah, the ATMOSPHERE! Loved Cthulhu and Dunwich! Thanks for sharing brother 🥃
A very modern design that will stand the test of "time".
Take the sector dial and that can go with anything. A field, dive, aviator or dress watches. Simple and elegant. 🍺
That JLC Chrono... man, what a watch. I'd have that machine in a heartbeat (and throw it on a nato) 😆 Have a great end to your Sunday Chris! 🥃
@@ID-Guy you ever thought of reviewing micro brands?

No wonder I like the VC Fiftysix..
It's those tiny details that make all the difference, brother. Love 'em! 🥃
you just made me want to get a sector dial JLC, and I hated those watches!
Really like the Patek Philippe, just wish it was SS than WG.
Those 5296's are charmers. In steel they'd be uber collectable and I agree, like the JLC Master Control, it would make it 10x more wearable as a daily 🥃
Liked and Sub'd.
Omega has once again, hit a grand slam. The baltic design in better than the longines, in that (on the baltic) the 12 o'clock line breaks at the mfg. name on the dial.
Love the Omega, if they release it in gold I’ll sell a kidney. Checkout the Mido Multifort Patrimony beautiful watch and amazing value.
What a cool looking Mido! Thanks for sharing this Michael (I've definitely seen it in articles before) And man... Imagine the Omega in Platinum? All the metals? I'm so down for that! 🔥

interesting. sector dials are the only dials I like
The real vintage Omega watch are available . If care is taken you can an Omega
Vintage watch which is affordable and reliable. The Omega watches are very will built.
I own several.
IMO, the Patek 5396 (not 5296) Annual is their prettiest sector dial watch. More balanced than the 5296.
How can you talk about Sector Dial without mentioning Cornes de Vache :(
That is one colossal OOPS. Now I'm going to be kicking myself every time i see this 😥
I love that the sector is undervalued it means you can pick up the Longines Sector used for £900 and never sell it - the omega is amazing but a bit too busy to my tastes, stick to your sports watches insta man - leave the proper pieces to the enthusiasts
Orient Bambino is what most people watching this can afford lol
I'm in that ballpark too right now 😆 Buying a house is... well... demanding. Have a great end to your weekend Troy! 🥃
