    Hey guys, start using the Staysail. It is the most useful working sail on the Quasar. After we blew the original Staysail out, we had a very heavy weight one made. In light winds it was good for a knot on a reach. In heavy winds we putout about 10% of the Jib, reefed the Main as needed and balanced the boat with the Stay. The only time we did not fly it was downwind.
    My method of dealing with storms was to sail directly at them. More often than not, the storm would be gone before we got there.
    The lighting that was lighting up the sky without you seeing bolts was cloud to cloud, no ground strikes. In aviation, we called it Sheet Lighting, often replacing the 2 e’s with an I.
    Best thing is to remember, the Prout will always take care of you. Seeing you give this lady a second life brings a giant smile to my face.

      Thanks for the advice, We will make a point to try and use the stay sail more.
      The one we have is really heavy so we should be good there.
      We are very confident that Supernova can take more then we can, we just need to get better at getting the most out of us.
      We could really do without the lightning lol but i would rather cloud to cloud then cloud to mast haha.
      Glad you enjoyed the video :-)

    Well done on the passage . I suspect your small boat stalker was pronably interested in seeing a fairly rare yacht but your caution is probably for the best JIC. Im ex merchant navy and always closed on small yachts , partly on curiosity as im also a yottie, and partly to check all is well.
    The OOW called me on sighting a yacht , we closed to half a mile and with no sign of life so gave him a really long blast on the whistle , he just strolled out of the cabin as if he expected to sea a 300,000 tonne tanker nearby . We had a chat on the VHF then dropped him some fresh bread and provisions and carried on our way.
    At sea we always said ships only move at nighttime and mealtimes .

    23:!6 & 24:34 those were wahoo not a barracuda!!! also the boat with the bright lights at 47:20 was almost 100% chasing a school of calamari (thus the bright lights and "weird" motion it was chasing the school with its nets or lines. But definitely would have reacted similarly to how Yvette did and gotten the spearguns ready just in case.

    • @sailing.supernova
      @sailing.supernova  4 місяці тому

      They were most likely fishing until we got closer, but it seems like there were really coming after us, they had nothing in the water and reacted every time we changed direction. I don't think they were out there to rob us, but it looked like they were trying to take an opportunity that they saw. Either way I'm really happy we were faster :-)

    Dear Sailing Supernova couple.
    👍👌👏 You managed to sail quite a long trip this time. Congratulations Captains Yvette and Darcy! 🎉 I would have loved to see you catching a well tasting fish. By the way: Why didn't you eat the Barracuda? The fish's name even sounds Australian. Don't you like the taste? 2) Your escape from the fisherpirates reminds me a little bit of the escape scene out of the movie "Wodaworld" with Kevin Costna. 😁 ;-) The only thing you need now is such a canon to shoot out such a special kite sail!
    As always: Thanks a lot for making explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.

    23:05 love your channel and nice video . Fishing tip as I have been deep sea fishing many times. Mahi-mahi are attracted to brightly colored lures that mimic their natural prey, such as flying fish, squid, and small baitfish. Some popular choices include feathered trolling lures, skirted trolling lures in vibrant colors like pink, green, and yellow, and diving plugs. Additionally, live bait like ballyhoo or mullet can be very effective when targeting mahi-mahi.

    Bonita are great for eating and especially sushi. Small " football" size or slightly larger. Cut the throat and bleed them out quickly in a bucket of salt water. Express the blood out from tail to head. Fillet and cut the blood stripe out and chill quickly

      It was not fun for about 2 minutes, but as soon as we realised that they had no hope of catching us we chilled out.
      What happened to Kathleen and Ralph was heartbreaking!
      We will do our best to stay away from other ships when at sea for sure!

    Glad you were able to make passage through the storm. Tropical sailing means you will have to deal with trough lines that form and just appear. What was more scary was the ‘fishing’ boat that dogged you. You are in smuggling territory. Please stay safe.

    • @sailing.supernova
      @sailing.supernova  8 місяців тому

      That was a bit of an uncomfortable time, I was very happy that we had both engines going and good wind. we got Supernova moving really fast, at 12 knots i don't think many of the old fishing boats we saw were going to catch us. We stayed much further away from other boats after that.
      The storm was good learning for both of us, but don't think we will ever get used to lightning haha :-)

    Hey guys. This was one of my concerns with you. Please be cautious of pirates out there. Prayers for you both. Do you both check to see where there are unsafe passage regarding such things? Not going to lie, i was scared for a bit seeing just how vulnerable you are out in the middle of the ocean. I hope you guys have some weapons on board. Im a land dweller 😂 so im not sure about the laws but i would be packing for sure. Meaning i would be carrying a gun. Be safe out there. Have become very fond of you both. Strange how i never met you but just seeing how you guys show such kindness and respect to each other and those you meet along the way has made you both my favorite sailing couple! Much love from the USA

      @sailing.supernova  4 місяці тому +1

      We got lucky and we were faster then them so it wasn't that bad. it didn't seem like they had any guns so i think they would have had a really hard time getting on board, I think if they pulled up along side and saw Darcy they may have changed there minds haha. We don't carry guns and we do look at what waters we are going into, but most of the people we meet are so kind.
      We are super happy you are enjoying the videos :-)
