Top tip for pairing ws320. Un-plug the bluetooth puck, turn the network on, standing next to the puck put the battery in the mast unit then plug the puck in. Works first time every time ;-)
Also for ws320: you can find aftermarket batteries, that are much better end with more amps. We have experienced that the original will fail at night, due to too low power. The batteri is used in surveillance cameras.
I believe the B&G configuration menu, is standard NMEA2000. I have the same with my Furuno DST810, 5001 Wind transducer and F710 MF screens . I used the 4 way bar too. It was fun to watch, for once, having already done it . Merry Christmas , George !
Thanks for a great video. I threw out my old Raymarine unit and have relied solely on Orca for a few years. Works great! Make sure the core is away from magnetic interference, and that Android touch is switched off when sailing in foul weather and breaking waves (it was rather unpleasant sailing the offshore Skagen Race with waves disabling the device). Except form these user errors it has served me really well.
I'm currently looking into electronics for my own new-to-me boat. Watching you install yours and give reasons for your choices was very helpful to me. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thanks, what’s good for me is not necessarily right for you but happy to give a view. I have owned or installed equipment from all the main manufacturers so probably have a wider range of experience than most. The only manufacturer I really don’t know well is NKE but that is not so common in the uk and generally on high end race boats
hi George, i really like your entertaining and knowledgeable videos. I had to giggle at the Orca sponsoring, it is not sponsoring but I got it for free ;)) Great disclaimer!
Thanks, pleased you enjoyed it. I think of sponsorship as someone pays another to say something nice about a product or service. Yes they gave me the stuff because I wanted to try it but no payment was requested, offered or implied. Orca were also very clear that I could give an honest review - which I will do in due course but I was genuinely interested in trying it. I get offered stuff to try or feature on the channel quite a bit but I’m very selective about what I go for and only try stuff I genuinely am interested in.
Been using the orca core 2 for a while, i have it paired to my phone and a ipad. Mounted it under the cockpit, and it works great. Polars are good. But my favorite thing is being able to use the AP on my phone!! The compass is as accurate as the precision 9 in my opinion. The chart routing isnt the best but its a new product. Love the channel, great work.
Great video, I've been using the Orca system for two years and absolutely love it. You'll want to get a wifi router that has a cellular sim so it is always connected. The wifi will greatly improve the wireless performance ( much better and faster than BT). Also gives you the ability to monitor your boat remotely. Also a great solution for AIS that will give you many other functions is the QK-A026 AIS Receiver with NMEA Multiplexer + WiFi + GPS.
Nice to see all information about Orca. I need to replace my old Raymarine chart plotter. Because of no more updates. Maybe this video gives me a go on Orca. Have a Nice Christmas and healthy new year. greatings from The Netherlands.
Hi George, great video as always. When you climb the mast to fit the wind instrument it would be great to see a ‘how to’. I’ve got to go up mine soon and It’s a bit daunting. I’m a heavy guy and don’t have self tailing winches. Convinced I’ll come crashing down through the coach roof 😂
Excellent content as usual, but sorry to have to establish that we have different brains... I always want the depth showing from the waterline. Reason being that you normally know what should be that value as from your position of the map. So if the map shows 2.5 meter, I know instantly if the reading agrees. But your tip on the sticker next to the instrument is pure gold! So maybe still some similarity in the grey matter...😂
Happy to agree to disagree on our preference on depth reading but as long as it’s known what the reading means then it’s all good. I have to add 1.95 to get the total depth of water and you have to do a subtraction to get depth under the keel. Horses for courses.
What an amazing system thanks for sharing it. Hope you have a great Christmas and Santa brings you some nice presents for your new boat. Also a Happy New Year.
Oh nice! Need to look into the ORCA system. I had heard the name in forums but was not sure what they were about. The bracket system is really neat idea. No need to have multiple expensive chart plotters at helm and nav station or bunk. You can take it with you down below or move off helm if you go to town or something. Will be especiallly interested in how well it networks with autopilot or other instruments.
Happy Christmas to you too. Interesting episode, the Orca system looks terrific, love the idea of a waterproof tablet you can move between boat and home, it will be interesting to follow your experiences with it.
Merry Christmas George to you and your family. I really like your channel, I have just upgraded to B&G on my First 33.7, but I have a Vulcan 9 instead of the Orca..tiller steered with the NAC-2 and a Raymarine Q047 tiller drive unit..love it all..just completed a 2000 plus cruise from Lake Macquaurie to Townsville and return 99% solo..you did a nice neat instal , looking forward to seeing you race your SJ320, looks like a great boat for what you are planning..I like fast..cheers and safe sailing..
Great, how did you install the ruder feedback (rudder reference) unit for the nac-2. That’s something I have been working on and have a couple of options but I’d be very interested in what you did.
Merry Christmas.. hope Santa brings you lots of boat goodies. V interesting seeing how modern instrumentation/NMEA can work. Will be fascinated to see it all working on the water.
If you’re talking about the old Ethernet bus (10base2, etc) with the BNC style connectors (showing my age) then essentially yes, that is how NMEA2000 works - it’s a single long bus cable rather than a star configuration and so it uses terminators at the ends of the main bus line.
@ we had one in our student house, which was great until the guy at the end of the wire went home for the holidays and locked his door whilst there was no terminator left. Hubs and switches are good :). Makes more sense to have a single bus on a boat though really as a switch would result in a lot more cable.
Thanks for another great episode. Your new instrument panel looks very sleek. It will be interesting to hear your verdict on the Orca system and its display, particularly outside in bright light or during night navigation. The system has some cool features. Cheers.
The orca screen is way brighter than my iPad which I have struggled with in very bright sunlight. Not much bright sunlight to worry out in winter though!
Dear George. A very Happy Christmas to you and your loved ones all the way from the western Pacific and the island of Guam. Everything you touch turns to gold, and there's not a skill, craft, or job you can not tackle and complete impeccably. I'm like a kid in a candy store watching your work, and every week, you take us down new and exciting asiles. Thank you for your channel, George and for who you are.
Cool to see u combine B&G and Orca. I have quite some experience with the B&G stuff, including NAC2/3 autopilot and the H5000 system. You should be able to select the Orca as source for wind data, so it acts as your sailing CPU and get better true wind data. Also a autopilot should be able to use the Orca data instead of adding a P9 compass. I would like to try the Orca Core with the H5000 pilot computer, I think it should work but yet to get experience. For polar and performance numbers, I’m not sure what Orca outputs over N2K, but B&G uses proprietary PGN’s (there are no standards avail) so not sure what Orca can do there to get the numbers on the Tritons. Following this closely 😊
Great content as always george ! I suspect you’ve already fed this back to orca but the routing took you across the TSS off seven stones at an angle. Orca looks a very good product but I guess they will only sell me one 😂
Yeah, the routing is, I think, a moderately new feature and there is a big update coming on that, I pointed out a couple of other things I noticed but they appear to be very responsive and open to suggestions so I’m looking forward to both using it and seeing the future updates.
Looking forward to the follow up on the water. I’ve been using orca on an android tablet on my Sigma 33. Have been looking at the Orca Core this winter. I will need some other NMEA2k toys to bring it to life though (currently NASA wind), the B&G wind has mixed reviews and the displays are quite busy so may go Raymarine on that front.
I think you can switch on and off the different parts of the wind display in the screen customisation so it can be made clearer. That said the old raymarine i50 is hard to bear for clarity.
Great video and perfect timing for me as just bought an old Hustler 30 which needs an instrument update on a budget. I was looking at Orca and B&G so will be very interested on how you find the combo. Have a great Christmas and look forward to next instalment.
Looking at the Orca website, there seems to be a lack of charts for the Pacific. Have they mentioned any plans to include the Pacific or did I miss something? Is there a way to use other digital charts in conjunction with Orca software? The cost seems very reasonable for marine instrumentation and navigation. Thanks for sharing! Happy Christmas!
Brilliant content as usual, currently doing a mini refit to the electronics on my own cruiser racer, gone with the old seatalk. Be interested to see how you get on with the orca system. I like the carbon fibre sheet, that'll match the tiller, never seen the 2 pack tins, great idea. Merry Christmas. Ps Let me know when you list that newer stng raymarine unit for sale, I could possibly use it ;-)
Pleased you liked the video. Not listed it yet so you are welcome to make me an offer. I have a workshop full of bits that I can’t quite bring myself to through out… I should take it all to a boat jumble!
Q. What is your go to tool for cutting square holes in glass cockpits? Drilling the corner holes is fine but what tool for the straight edges? I need to fit the B&G AP controller like the one you fitted. She's a twister with quite a thick glass layup.
Oscillating tool, as per the vid, go slow on thick glass as it’s easy to overheat the blade (particularly on grp) and that then dulls the teeth. You can use a straight bit of metal bar or angle as a guide if you like but I normally cut freehand
Hi, great video (as usual :) with a lot of great usefull info, I love this content, but please for the love of God wear at least a respirator when cutting carbon! You know you want the radio. I'm about the same age as you and have a similar radio that takes cd's. I'm sorry but i cant part with my cd's just yet. If only i could find a cassette player to go next to it?
Haha, I don’t think I have any cd’s now but I do get what you are saying. As it happens I have now made a excision on the car radio, stay tuned (pun intended) to find out
I could have extended the panel and made it fit but I have limited time, it would hade been a lot more work and I had space to mount the display elsewhere. Because the 4th display s just for the pilot it makes sense for it to be next ti the pilot controller so I think this actually works better.
What temps did you apply your graphics in? I have some stripping to apply and I’d love to get it done over the winter but I’ve been told it’s not advisable.
Nope, from what I understand the ultrasonic transducers are great for fixed installations but masts move and lean over and so they are not sensitive enough and not as good as mechanical/traditional transducers on sailing yachts. Go take a look at multi million pound racing boats and they all use mechanical transducers still.
@@RefitandSailHave a look at the FT602 from FT technologies. Quite new stuff, some Vendee Globe boat use them as secondary or even primary wind sensors.
