I just picked up 1,000 rounds of this from Midway for $179.00. For some odd reason, the Aguila Super Extra high velocity, 40 grain round nose @ 1260 fps, shoots extremely well out of my CZ 452 American and my CZ MTR! I don't shoot in competitions, just shoot for my own entertainment and keeping in form. I'll see how this new Aguila Target does in my rifles and let you know... Thanks for a very timely review!
Just wanted to say thanks for doing the ammo battle with the 457. I recently picked up a Manners MTR and made my initial ammo purchase of 6 different types based on this series to see which mine likes the most. It sure helped narrow things down.

Three others with very good results Fiocchi, Exacta Winter Fiocchi, Official 320 Eley, semi-auto bench rest precision And I'll throw in one more, something very interesting RWS R50 (SC) Short Chamber. In my MTR and my brothers was much better than Regular R50. Like normal we did get a lot# that wasn't as good. Once again thanks, my brother and I are 62 and 68 year old so it's great to see young folks doing some real testing/shooting 👍

this stuff worked fine for me but honestly the Super Extra standard velocity worked better and even performed well out to 400yrds. @ 50yrds the best out of my rifle was actually federal gold medal match but the Aguila was damn close for a good bit less money.
super extra are surprisingly good in everything ive tried them with, especially with the price and availability, they seem like a very underrated round.
Josh, I appreciate that you are diving this deep. I agree with your assessment of the Aguila ammo. It is over priced plinking ammo. The hardness of the bolt closing is due to inconsistencies in rim thickness. Your MTR chamber is tight and wont perform well with "rack grade" ammo. Keep up the good work!!!
Thanks Josh. I tried some Aguila Rifle Match in my Ruger precision last year and it didn't care for it either. I'll have to try what I have left in my 457 MTR and see if I get similar results.
Great video, love the tests. A little surprised at the position Lapua ended up. I have good luck with Norma Tac-22 (red box 1083 fpc). it would be interesting to see how it measured-up. It's only about $5 a box, but in my rifles shoots above it's price point. Keep up the good work!!

CCI standard velocity shoots very similar to this Aguilla match. It produces good groups, then throws a flier about every 10 shots. The CCi Green Tag however does not throw fliers. Both shoot to the same point of impact, which is great. I can use the standard ammo for informal shooting, and use the Green tag for hunting. I'm a hunter, not a competitor, but I still love my CZ 457.
Glad to have found your channel, if you have a chance please add Geco auto rifle, bolt action and match to your tests. My Bergara B14R seems to love this stuff, especially the match. I sorted by rim thickness and weight and for the money it was more consistent than most. Great videos, thanks
Holy sh!t I didn't realise centre x shot so poorly in this testing. Thats insane!!! Love your work as always. Would definitely be interesting to see if you have better results sorting and weighing the aquila or whether it's just junk.
It is indeed HARD to close the bolt on my MTR aswell... i shot 5, 5 shot groups with the non eley primed Aquila standard velocity and got an average of .498. better than cci sv (.656) but not as good as norma tac 22 (.424) so not bad for 5 dollars a box canadian! cheers, and thx for the video.

Have you ever tried the Norma tac22 it's a target ammo not a match. But I've shot it along with a couple other ppl groups really well. But it does need to be sorted.

My 457 Varmint likes Wolf Match target. Next I have Wolf Match Extra. Slightly better ammo. $0.33 per round at the time of purchase. They have come down since to $0.20 and I bought more. I’m hoping to get better results. At 50 yards they make one whole with 5 shots at 0.4 inch. Here in Ohio it’s starting to cool down, so the season and the outings will come to an end. So much fun…
If you could get some RWS subsonic hollow point I would love to see the results of that. I am certainly not an Olympic Shooter but my CZ 452 American 16" shot brill today after passing rod through a couple of times (thanks for tip) even though it's barely broken in.

You can say that most CZ’s are tested and developed at the factory with or around this ammo. Just wonder if one could manage tighter groups with their own ammo. Keep up making awesome videos! Enjoy the videos, I'm learning a great deal watching them. Have you considered Norma Tac 40 gr? It's not match ammo but I have been pretty happy with it. Seems well made and shoots well in my CZ 457 American. Just wondering what the results would be through your very fine rifle.
I'd love to see if sorting by rim thickness would make a difference. In Australia here Aguila Rifle Match is $10 per 50 cheaper than Eley Match and around $5 per 50 than SK Rifle Match. I'm going to buy a thickness gauge and see what I find in my CZ 455.
Salut Josh, Delighted you are now using Ballistic X software. As it is so economically priced I do not understand why other UA-camr gun channels do not follow suite and not just rely on callipers and their judgement. When I compared my test results of good Match ammo (RWS and SK) with both callipers and then Ballistic X, I was surprised at how much difference the MOA values were. My previous results were over optimistic when measured by the software. I am not suggesting you repeat all your former testing as the grouping sizes can be compared without the necessity of any “numbers” being quoted. However when you do your retesting of the top Brands of match ammo the results will be much more definitive.
Good stuff man. I would love to see another attempt (not part of the challenge because that would be cheating) with CCI SV..those results were so much worse than the others...and I bet many viewers shoot CCI sV
@@PursuitofAccuracy lol...I sorted an entire brick of CCI SV and started a thread on RimfireCentral about it...oh boy was THAT a mistake. There are shooters there that are 100% sure it is useless and they let me have it. In fairness they make a compelling argument. Just last week a guy took a bunch of CCI SV...broke it down...weighed all parts...lead, case, powder and even removed primer...and posted it all...primer was the biggest difference in weight
I should clarify...the variance in the primer compound seemed to be the greatest. Powder variance was surprisingly tight. Lead weight was tight too.. he is now doing a box of Eley Tenex...to report results in a few days
If you look into the details on their website you will find that the rifle match is designed for long barreled 22 rifles 24 to 26 inch bbl the target competition version is for standard length bbl. Both list same velocity for the appropriate length bbl. My 26inch barrel mossberg really likes the rifle match but acts similar to you're rifle with the target competition. Both list 1080 fps for respective bbl length. Just a thought, both priced the same, same bullets. Who knows???
Just for your information Josh, I happen to have some of that Aguila Rifle Match on hand. I checked rim thickness on 15 cartridges. They ran from a low of .0375" to .040" Averaging .0385". I had shot them from my CZ 457 Varmint MTR a month or so ago and their velocity for 20 shots averaged right around 1096 fps with a 48 fps ES. The four five shot groups averaged right at .859" . In contrast, 15 Eley Match cartridges averaged .0375" with a low of .037" and a high of .038". I have a lot of statistics on a good amount of the ammo you test. My LabRadar is used for all my shooting.
@@PursuitofAccuracy So, just for the heck of it I checked rim thicknesses on SK semi auto and Wolf Match Xtra. The Semi averaged (15 rounds) .0413" The lowest was .041" and the highest .0415". The Wolf averaged .0373" with the lowest being .0365" and the highest .038" A Hornady rim thickness gauge was used along with a Fowler digital caliper. Question Josh....Do you know what the ideal headspace is for these precision rimfire rifles? Are we looking at .000" clearance between the bolt face and the cartridge? Or do we want some space when the bolt is closed? I build precision CF match rifles and my headspace is in the .001" area. Playing with rimfires is new to me so I am not sure what the gunsmiths that build these custom rifles are after. I can see where you could headspace a rifle for a specific ammunition.....but I am not sure what that measurement is? Any help? Obviously, that Lilja barrel for the CZ that comes with the shims is addressing this condition. Thanks Richard
@@richarddesimone4451 i would imagine most are built to a .043 headspafe so that it will chamber almost any ammo. When im shooting eley etc i target .039 to .040 depending on the ammo. So basically im shooting for .001 gap with the cartridge loaded. This gives an easy bolt close and consistent ignition

OK, so you imagined these rifles are built with a .043" headspace! So today, to satisfy my curiosity, I removed the barrel for cleaning and more trigger adjusting along with doing an actual check on its headspace. I used my Mitutoyo depth micrometer and took readings (several in different locations) on both the distance of the action face to the bolt face (1.239") and the distance from the barrel shoulder to the face of the breech (1.193") I took several readings all around both the barrel and action to make sure they were all the same............and they were. Based on the readings, it would appear that headspace is .046". Unless the tolerance on your rifle is different, I would not believe that the hard bolt closing you experienced in the Aguila video was due to headspace? More along the lines of the bullet jamming the leade in the chamber? Thoughts? I was almost thinking of cutting the shoulder back a few thousandths allowing the barrel to lock up closer to the bolt............................However, after examining the situation, I see where there is a horizontal cut on the back of the breech along with the cuts for the extractors and was unsure if I just moved the shoulder, I would mess up something in the back end so I changed my mind. I would imagine Lilja probably has all these spec's built in on their "headspace adjustable" barrel. Thoughts?
Just put a deposit on an MTR, can't wait to get it! If you can get it try RWS Rifle Match, shot great out my old 455 and my T-Bolt. I did sort by weight though.
I shoot a Brno mod 2E, which is also basically a CZ. The best group size I got from S&B std 40gr. If you put all the .22 ammo on a scale, they doesnt vary as much as some of the other manufacturers. S&B ammo are readily available in Soith Africa.
I dont have any fancy scopes and stuff, but have tested alot of rimfire ammo. The S&B std 40gr is by far the best thru my Brno rifle. I’m still looking for the subsonic S&B ammo to test. The shortage of ammo isn’t really helping. Maybe you should come and visit me here in South Africa and test it here on my farm😝

I just picked up a die by Neil waltz you can do a flat point like eley or a hollow point and in doing that it makes the driving bands a .225 dia. And perfectly round I have found it helps mid price ammo more accurate but not much better on high end ammo And it helps alot to sort the ammo too when reworking the ammo
Where can you buy Sk Rifle Match for 8 bucks a box. The cheapest I can find SK standard Plus online is around 12 bucks a box once you add shipping and tax.
Goodshootinginc or champions choice. Goes quick when its in stock but its priced at realistic prices. For reference on how much the "other" sites are overcharging people........ goodshooting sells rifle match for 7.30 a box........ quit spending money with the people openly ripping you off.
I bought a box of their match gold lol the bullet the lead part was to big it wouldn’t close up good without force I did no shoot it but I seen where the trouble closing was the lead bullet you could see where it tried to go in chamber left marks on the lead that supposed to been there best now I shot some lesser grades that done fair but the chambered easy but it was way cheaper than that when I bought it it’s been 5 year since I shot any of that brand
Good test. That's kinda what i thought too. Spend the extra $1.00 for better ammo. How about testing some Wolf Ammo? I've had good luck with them. Josh what's your take on Neal Waltz's resizing dies. I would be interesting to see the test of a perfect sized bullet at 50 and 100 yards.
I cant hear it as much in the camera. But I can REALLY hear it with my can on my gun. Its really inconsistent. I'm really just getting back started with 22, but I probably won't end up with a lot more of this stuff.
My CZ 455 did not like this ammo.SK rifle match seams the best so far in my rifle. Second favorite is Federal auto match. Waiting for Laupua Center X to be in stock.
Some may accuse you of bias. You didnt really follow your regular protocols. (As you mentioned) breaking cheek weld etc. (That second target had a big change of impact after you came completely off the rifle.) Most shooter of Aguila shooters i know do sort it.
I am 100% biased against that ammo 🤣🤣🤣 When you have to break cbeek weld just to close the bolt with 10lbs of force its not good ammo, especially when its not consistently that hard. A junior shooter wouldnt even be able to work the bolt with that ammo.
I have been following you for a long time, you are very capable in shooting, perhaps firing with a constant and continuous rhythm, don't you think you could tighten the five shots? Seeing is believing.
I think if i shot enough of it there would be some decent groups but not consistently. Honestly its bad enough i wouldnt recommend it to anyone. Especially since sk is around the same price and is just better
Love the Ballistic-X overlays, but try not to cover up the targets where they are shot. ;-) It would be cool if you had a web page or Patreon post that listed out the current rankings of the 14 ammos tested Separately speaking, I've noticed that in all calibers that Aguila has thicker / heavier brass (much like Eley is thicker than average). I wonder if the hard bolt closes & shooting left is related to it technically being a different headspace when that happens - just a thought.

When you say “check and sort” I’m just curious as to what your checking for, I never have heard anyone sorting there .22 ammunition. Are you checking rim thickness? OAL? Rim crimp?
I wonder if the hard closure is actually a chambering issue, and some distortion of the actual bullet screws up the 'spin', enough to cause a left drift... what do I know, just a thought ;-) It might be interesting to take the sound track, into an editing package, and look at the 'signature' of each shot, against that vertical distribution, and the sound difference that you were hearing??
@@PursuitofAccuracy I measured many, i found the rim thickness was the problem. It was also VERY inconsistent in the size. This Agulia Match ammo is NOT worth the price. I`ve shot American bulk ammo that kicked this ammo`s ass bigtime. If you have a MATCH chamber, its gonna run tight as hell in it. Bolt will close hard.
I would like to see Geco Rifle 22lr in the shootout. It has a RWS headstamp. I would say it compares to Norma tac 22 when it come to performance. I Geco Rifle if you can not find any. Just let me know.
Not very good match ammo . I have a couple bricks of it and it does really bad at 100yds. Shame as the old PMC Bronze rifle match made by Aguila was better.
Out of curiosity, what is the practicality of shooting a 'practice' ammo, other than 'it's cheap'? Seriously, I don't understand why something that shoots different in your rifle can help with improvement. Shouldn't one practice using the same tools? Seems kind of like practising with a sling shot (example, not seriously) to better understand your Vudoo. I dunno, maybe I'm just dense, but I don't get the connection.
I was just glad that I didn't pay too much for it. :) There are better choices out there. Most of the SK stuff is at least as good, but probably better and more consistent. It's good to have someone else verify the results though.

Aguila means Eagle. I find the plain Standard Velocity to be better. Also the Federal Ultra Match (UM22) was made by RWS in Germany. it's no longer imported under the Federal name. Before the pandemic I bought all I could Google and got some from about 7 different states. Some for as low as 5 bucks a box. It shoots very good in a few of my rifles. Not so good in others. Ejoyed the content.
That rifle has the factory trigger with the yodave. At this point its pribably going to stay that way as my daughter shoots it a lot and she is used to that trigger. My 3rd 457 will be getting a timney once they release the flat trigger shoe model as I already have the curved on my competition 457.
Aguila = garbage ammo. BTW Green Tag does not group as well in any of my rifles as SK Standard +. All of my rifles, with the exception of the 82G, like SK Long Range and Biathlon.

I have a cz 455 varmint and a sako p94s varmint and I have found cci blazer 50 round boxes shoot tight groups surprisingly.

I have an old CZ 453 varmint that loves AGUILA 40g SUBSONIC. I have never had any bolt closing issues. Always been good to me.

My Lithgow LA101 hates Centre X but loves Midas +. Problem is it is expensive and almost impossible to find here in Australia.

Some of them are obviously standard velocity. But some of them are very apparently super sonic when shot through a can.
Its really good on my cz452 today. I made 5.6" at 75 meter

Norma Tac-22 is Match grade ammo. Its just rebranded RWS Target Rifle so its a lower tiered Match ammo more for practice.
I`ve tried it in my CZ457, without a doubt, CCI-SV kicked its ass, and bigtime too!

However when you do your retesting of the top Brands of match ammo the results will be much more definitive.

My 457 doesnt do too great with cci sv but my bergara b14r sure likes it a lot more than the CZ.
@@PursuitofAccuracy lol...I sorted an entire brick of CCI SV and started a thread on RimfireCentral about it...oh boy was THAT a mistake. There are shooters there that are 100% sure it is useless and they let me have it. In fairness they make a compelling argument. Just last week a guy took a bunch of CCI SV...broke it down...weighed all parts...lead, case, powder and even removed primer...and posted it all...primer was the biggest difference in weight

I should clarify...the variance in the primer compound seemed to be the greatest. Powder variance was surprisingly tight. Lead weight was tight too.. he is now doing a box of Eley Tenex...to report results in a few days
If you look into the details on their website you will find that the rifle match is designed for long barreled 22 rifles 24 to 26 inch bbl the target competition version is for standard length bbl. Both list same velocity for the appropriate length bbl. My 26inch barrel mossberg really likes the rifle match but acts similar to you're rifle with the target competition. Both list 1080 fps for respective bbl length. Just a thought, both priced the same, same bullets. Who knows???
Almost all of the ammo manufacturers do something like that. In my opinion 75% of it is total bs.
Just for your information Josh, I happen to have some of that Aguila Rifle Match on hand. I checked rim thickness on 15 cartridges. They ran from a low of .0375" to .040" Averaging .0385". I had shot them from my CZ 457 Varmint MTR a month or so ago and their velocity for 20 shots averaged right around 1096 fps with a 48 fps ES. The four five shot groups averaged right at .859" .
In contrast, 15 Eley Match cartridges averaged .0375" with a low of .037" and a high of .038".
I have a lot of statistics on a good amount of the ammo you test. My LabRadar is used for all my shooting.

@@PursuitofAccuracy So, just for the heck of it I checked rim thicknesses on SK semi auto and Wolf Match Xtra. The Semi averaged (15 rounds) .0413" The lowest was .041" and the highest .0415". The Wolf averaged .0373" with the lowest being .0365" and the highest .038"
A Hornady rim thickness gauge was used along with a Fowler digital caliper.
Question Josh....Do you know what the ideal headspace is for these precision rimfire rifles? Are we looking at .000" clearance between the bolt face and the cartridge? Or do we want some space when the bolt is closed? I build precision CF match rifles and my headspace is in the .001" area. Playing with rimfires is new to me so I am not sure what the gunsmiths that build these custom rifles are after. I can see where you could headspace a rifle for a specific ammunition.....but I am not sure what that measurement is? Any help? Obviously, that Lilja barrel for the CZ that comes with the shims is addressing this condition.

When im shooting eley etc i target .039 to .040 depending on the ammo.
So basically im shooting for .001 gap with the cartridge loaded. This gives an easy bolt close and consistent ignition

OK, so you imagined these rifles are built with a .043" headspace! So today, to satisfy my curiosity, I removed the barrel for cleaning and more trigger adjusting along with doing an actual check on its headspace. I used my Mitutoyo depth micrometer and took readings (several in different locations) on both the distance of the action face to the bolt face (1.239") and the distance from the barrel shoulder to the face of the breech (1.193") I took several readings all around both the barrel and action to make sure they were all the same............and they were. Based on the readings, it would appear that headspace is .046".
Unless the tolerance on your rifle is different, I would not believe that the hard bolt closing you experienced in the Aguila video was due to headspace? More along the lines of the bullet jamming the leade in the chamber? Thoughts?
I was almost thinking of cutting the shoulder back a few thousandths allowing the barrel to lock up closer to the bolt............................However, after examining the situation, I see where there is a horizontal cut on the back of the breech along with the cuts for the extractors and was unsure if I just moved the shoulder, I would mess up something in the back end so I changed my mind. I would imagine Lilja probably has all these spec's built in on their "headspace adjustable" barrel.

Just put a deposit on an MTR, can't wait to get it! If you can get it try RWS Rifle Match, shot great out my old 455 and my T-Bolt. I did sort by weight though.

I shoot a Brno mod 2E, which is also basically a CZ. The best group size I got from S&B std 40gr. If you put all the .22 ammo on a scale, they doesnt vary as much as some of the other manufacturers. S&B ammo are readily available in Soith Africa.

I dont have any fancy scopes and stuff, but have tested alot of rimfire ammo. The S&B std 40gr is by far the best thru my Brno rifle. I’m still looking for the subsonic S&B ammo to test. The shortage of ammo isn’t really helping. Maybe you should come and visit me here in South Africa and test it here on my farm😝

I just picked up a die by Neil waltz you can do a flat point like eley or a hollow point and in doing that it makes the driving bands a .225 dia. And perfectly round I have found it helps mid price ammo more accurate but not much better on high end ammo
And it helps alot to sort the ammo too when reworking the ammo
the neil waltz does help, ive just began head space testing.works for me, now with the off ones i'll try some resizing

I bought a box of their match gold lol the bullet the lead part was to big it wouldn’t close up good without force I did no shoot it but I seen where the trouble closing was the lead bullet you could see where it tried to go in chamber left marks on the lead that supposed to been there best now I shot some lesser grades that done fair but the chambered easy but it was way cheaper than that when I bought it it’s been 5 year since I shot any of that brand

My CZ 455 did not like this ammo.SK rifle match seams the best so far in my rifle. Second favorite is Federal auto match. Waiting for Laupua Center X to be in stock.
Auto match runs pretty good in my CZ 457 it's my go to for practice/plinking.

For grins could you shoot some regular 22 ammo and see how it groups? I'm not talking like mini mags but some decent major brand general 22's.
Some may accuse you of bias. You didnt really follow your regular protocols. (As you mentioned) breaking cheek weld etc.
(That second target had a big change of impact after you came completely off the rifle.)

When you have to break cbeek weld just to close the bolt with 10lbs of force its not good ammo, especially when its not consistently that hard.
A junior shooter wouldnt even be able to work the bolt with that ammo.

I have been following you for a long time, you are very capable in shooting, perhaps firing with a constant and continuous rhythm, don't you think you could tighten the five shots? Seeing is believing.
I think if i shot enough of it there would be some decent groups but not consistently. Honestly its bad enough i wouldnt recommend it to anyone. Especially since sk is around the same price and is just better
Love the Ballistic-X overlays, but try not to cover up the targets where they are shot. ;-) It would be cool if you had a web page or Patreon post that listed out the current rankings of the 14 ammos tested
Separately speaking, I've noticed that in all calibers that Aguila has thicker / heavier brass (much like Eley is thicker than average). I wonder if the hard bolt closes & shooting left is related to it technically being a different headspace when that happens - just a thought.

When you say “check and sort” I’m just curious as to what your checking for, I never have heard anyone sorting there .22 ammunition. Are you checking rim thickness? OAL? Rim crimp?

It might be interesting to take the sound track, into an editing package, and look at the 'signature' of each shot, against that vertical distribution, and the sound difference that you were hearing??

This Agulia Match ammo is NOT worth the price. I`ve shot American bulk ammo that kicked this ammo`s ass bigtime.
If you have a MATCH chamber, its gonna run tight as hell in it. Bolt will close hard.
I would like to see Geco Rifle 22lr in the shootout. It has a RWS headstamp. I would say it compares to Norma tac 22 when it come to performance. I Geco Rifle if you can not find any. Just let me know.

Not very good match ammo . I have a couple bricks of it and it does really bad at 100yds. Shame as the old PMC Bronze rifle match made by Aguila was better.

Out of curiosity, what is the practicality of shooting a 'practice' ammo, other than 'it's cheap'? Seriously, I don't understand why something that shoots different in your rifle can help with improvement. Shouldn't one practice using the same tools? Seems kind of like practising with a sling shot (example, not seriously) to better understand your Vudoo. I dunno, maybe I'm just dense, but I don't get the connection.

I was just glad that I didn't pay too much for it. :) There are better choices out there. Most of the SK stuff is at least as good, but probably better and more consistent. It's good to have someone else verify the results though.

Aguila means Eagle. I find the plain Standard Velocity to be better. Also the Federal Ultra Match (UM22) was made by RWS in Germany. it's no longer imported under the Federal name. Before the pandemic I bought all I could Google and got some from about 7 different states. Some for as low as 5 bucks a box. It shoots very good in a few of my rifles. Not so good in others. Ejoyed the content.

That rifle has the factory trigger with the yodave.
At this point its pribably going to stay that way as my daughter shoots it a lot and she is used to that trigger.
My 3rd 457 will be getting a timney once they release the flat trigger shoe model as I already have the curved on my competition 457.

Aguila = garbage ammo. BTW Green Tag does not group as well in any of my rifles as SK Standard +. All of my rifles, with the exception of the 82G, like SK Long Range and Biathlon.
