I've been listening to Kasey's rendition of this classic, at least once a day for months now, and it never gets old. The disappointments, the never give up attitude, the success at the cost of relationships... Kasey's lived this life too, it's not just Em's story.
Kasey Chambers is an Australian legend: the youngest person to be inducted into the Australian Music Hall of Fame, a dozen albums and has more than 30 ARIA Awards (the AU Grammy's). She is beloved but is ignored by radio and was shunned by Sony. She's been performing in her father's band since she was 12 years old (her brother is backing vocals and her dad is on the steel guitar on stage here). She had some pop hits in the 90s but her heart and soul is Country in her own style. She wanted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this song because she loves Eminem, and she had the time to rearrange and compose this masterpiece during lockdown. She is showing so much emotion because she has lived this to a degree as well. She is now 48 years old and a mother of three. This recording is the first time it was ever performed live and was done at the end of the concert. They thought it went well, so they used the recording from the sound desk and asked their fans who were in attendance to provide any footage they had to composite this one together. While there has been no public approval from Em, she has been allowed to put this song up on Spotify without challenge.
Best reaction ever!!! And you are right about her understanding the song it makes all the difference. She said that although she is a folk ..country singer she has always been a em and em fan and it shows!!
She's pretty much a contemporary of Eminem. Close to the same age, hit the US country charts with Not Pretty Enough in 2001 (Lose Yourself was 2002), would be classed as alt country in the US.
Stan here confirming she did, in fact, hit “superstardom is close to post-mortem” harder than Em did…she also makes “hold your nose cause here goes the cold water” somehow hit even harder. You’re good 👍🏼 🙂
Her brother on Guitar, Dad on Slide Guitar. Kasey's a famous Australian Country artist who never is scared of exposing her heart to her fans on stage. Where to go from here? Sorry for suggesting 3 songs, but with a dozen albums to her name, her diskography is huge. Start with 'Not Pretty Enough'. She wrote this after her initial albums went well, but the radio stations refused to play them. Next try 'Aint No Little Girl' (do the live version from Underground Bluegrass), about breaking up. Lastly, 'Nullarbor Song (Live)', about missing home. For that last one, the Nullarbor Plains area of Australia is a 200,000 km2 strip of coast along our Southern border, stuck between the ocean and the Great Victoria Desert. On a good day it's got less than 100 permanent residents in it and has the main east-west road and railway going through it. The name is from the Latin, Null Arbor - No Trees. Her family lived/camped here for a lot of the time Kasey was growing up. Bring tissues.
You totally nailed it. Saying that she understands this song. If you know Kasey’s back ground story she has lived it. One of the most underrated musicians in Australia.
Kasey has lived this song, which is why she puts so much emotion into her version of it. She hit this out of the stadium. Love this version.❤ Kasey is a talented song writer in her own right. Check out her 'Ain't No Little Girl' and 'Not Pretty Enough' she wrote the later song because radio stations wouldn't play her music. It became a hit in Australia. We love Kasey here.
watching your face at the start I think I saw enchantment and wonder, not always the case as some don't understand. Her emotion both soft and hard makes me shiver. Then she just blows your mind. Thanks for the reaction as I think this is the best cover since John Farnham covered "Help"in the 80's.
@@Matticus-mb6wl I am definitely interested. I try to keep a list of requests but it grows long and takes a while. Please, remind me again after a bit.☺️

Another amazing Ozzie performance Is Matt Corby Triple jjj radio studio live !! ( Don't choose any other recording of it ) Nothing like Kasey but the same kind of super dooper talent oozing out of their pores.
Your reaction is utterly brilliant! You felt it, your face told the story or your emotional response to Kasey literally living this story. She really did, it's exactly how she strived and survived and eventually thrived in the industry that destroys musicians and especially focusses on pulverising female musos. She is a total a warrior who has lived this story. She spent covid lockdowns creating this arrangement, this was the first live performance, and Marshall actually loved it. So much so that he gave Kasey permission to release it on Spotify under her name.
My mouth is sore from smiling at your reaction. So good. Great review. You really felt what she and M were expressing. Re Kasey, it felt like somewhere, Janis Joplin was saying, "Finally!, someone who can channel me!"
I agree that the colliding of genres can be a beautiful thing when it's done with thoughtfulness and originality. Kasey certainly shows her respect for Eminem's lyrics here. I really enjoyed the authenticity and emotion of your reaction. I would love for you to react to The Captain, followed by Aint No Little Girl, both Kasey Chambers originals. I dare you to do them back to back, in the same reaction ✌️
Hey my neighbor with the red hair don’t know how I missed this one excellent reaction this girl gave me GOOSEBUMPS thru the whole song best cover ever, later beautiful.❤️😎🇺🇸WOW you nailed it with that Black Sabbath shout out.👍

There was soft voice, head voice, country chest voice, Irish keening, yodels and open throat attack voice! All out of one woman, hats off! A cover made her own!
Great reaction! The comment about knowing the story, understanding the story, yes! Like Jeff Buckleys cover of Hallelujah, so many singers sacrifice passion and pain for sounding pretty. This is the same damn thing!
What an awesome cover and tribute to Eminem. Apparently he gave the go ahead for this to go on Spotify, which really says something. This is the best cover I’ve heard since the phenomenal John Farnham, another Aussie icon, performed his slowed down emotional version of the Beatles Help with the MSO (Melbourne, symphony orchestra). John also impressed John Lennon back then too.😊
Thank you for sharing your reaction, this is one of the best I've seen to this cover. Your surprise and joy when the full band drops in is exactly how most of us reacted when we saw it, it's brilliant. Kasey took the opportunity to create this cover during the covid lock-down period.
Thank you. The feeling that I had watching this, I don’t think that comes around too often. That particular type of greatness combined with such understanding and tribute. Just incredible.

So when Em delivers this it is very stoic, very you can’t beat me. In my heart I always heard this song like this…scared of hope but to desperate to quit merging into determination bordering on being unhinged
I hope one of those "Summertime" covers is Janis Joplin's. This is exquisite in the way Kasey uses the angst and pain in the first half then rocks out the anger and determination in the last part.
Brilliant reaction. (except for the sudden stop at the end as crowd acknowledgment was important. This was the first time I actually really heard the lyrics....Kasey slowly telling Eminem's abusive early life and the comes in the emotional journey of rejection....the POW! The anger is palpable. Just awesome performance from our Kasey. Hi from Australia
Yes, unfortunately I’m notorious for cutting a video off short or letting a commercial play. However, I watched it again on my big tv and let it play til there was nothing but applause!
Well that took quite a turn! I was at the this isn't bad at all in the early part then it went wild and became it's own thing! Some cover that was! If you want something live and wild and with a whirling dervish singer totally feeling every note check out: Oils on Water - 16. Stand In Line - Midnight Oil The lyrics very much resonate now too. Which kind of shows nothing changes much!
It probably takes so long to hear because she's Australian. She's been around, like, forever, being brilliant. Australia is full of artists like her, who never get picked up overseas.
@redheadedneighbor Theres a reason for that Australian artists will not Kowtow to the Major labels BS to try and market them and turn them into something they are not..our Artists have integrity and are all about the music and not playing the fame game.

Stepped into a Kasey Concert - Did Ya!?!🤣😆 Been lovin these -particularly US - Reactors who start off saying "Awww! What a cute little Folk rendition...!" and then lose their shit at the end. Our Kase is an absolute legend. Some say she's a little bit Janis J - But I say she's just totally and uniquely Kasey. Can sing anything. Brilliant song writer too. Soooo many Awards down here. Rest of the world is late to the Kasey Party! 😊
There was a line that you said she hit harder than Em. In my opinion, she hit the entire song harder than Em. Rapp and Hip Hop haven't had the same following here in Australia, as in the US. Pop, Rock and Country are more popular here. So while Em's audience would still prefer his version, Kasey and her band created this for her audience, and totally nailed it. Thank you for sharing, g'day from Australia.
Em was revolutionary back in the day and it really took hold here. I didn’t listen to it back then but even I loved this song. But the depth of her knowledge of music and struggle ( if she hasn’t known struggle she is an amazing actress) and stage presence… all of it. Amazing.
Check out some of Kasey's hit songs: Not Pretty Enough(This is her go at mainstream radio for not playing her music), Ain't No Little Girl, The Captain, If We Had A Child(with Keith Urban).
Just heard her cover last night and am falling down the reaction videos rabbit hole still.. You’re so right about the parallels of storytelling in folk/country and rap. People who don’t like rap don’t take the time to unravel the lyrics. They probably don’t like Shakespeare either. The other thing you said about her emphasis on the phrase ‘Superstardom is close to postmortem’ and also the way she deemphasizes the phrase ‘Make me king’ are the key to how she changes the meaning of the song and makes it deeper without changing the lyrics, I think. I’ve always loved this song but the way she sings it makes me wonder if Eminem should be nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature? Enjoyed your thoughts on the cover!
A group called Mountain Head does a cover of a Wu-Tang Clan/ODB song Shimmy Shimmy Ya that is so good that Wu-Tang posted it to their own UA-cam channel and thats the video you should use. Mountain Head has some great stuff like We Stole Your Head that is great!! Great reaction !!!
I absolutely love this song and have watched quite a few youtubers doing reaction videos of it. Your reaction has by far been the most enthusiastic. So much so that I spent the entire time watching you and smiling at (and laughing at one point) as you responded to the way Kasey did this. The last reaction video to this song was very disappointing because the 3 guys doing it weren't keen on it because it was nothing like Em's original version. Not sure they should be doing reaction videos if they just expect people to do carbon copy versions. You get 2 thumbs up for me.
You should check out John Farnham - Help (Beatles cover). Another Aussie changing it up and making it his own. Or watch one of Farnsey's originals like You're the Voice
Totally understand about what's behind the lyrics in summertime also you are my sunshine is very dark a singer songwriter called Alice Kristiansen does a great cover with her friend slow and dark with beautiful voices. ✌️❤️🏴
If you like Lose Yourself covers, try opera singer Maria Fiselier on Dutch TV show Beste Zangers. It was the first time she rapped in public. If you want to see Maria in her natural element try, from different episodes of the same show, Il Mondo or dueting Perfect Symphony with Alain Clark.
Just a Little Trivia... that's Kasey's father on Slide/Steel Guitar... from the family band "Dead Ringer Band" to absolutely killing Eminem... what more could you ask for?
Listen to Matt Corby songs: 'Brother' on Triple JJJ and Matt Corby 'Made Stone' great Aussie musician and Aalso the Tesky Brother’s 'Rain' and a few others from the Tesky Brother’s another Aussie Band. You won't be disappointed Sweet Redhead 😊
Without doubt, the best live performance of 2022

Our Kase is an absolute legend. Some say she's a little bit Janis J - But I say she's just totally and uniquely Kasey. Can sing anything. Brilliant song writer too. Soooo many Awards down here. Rest of the world is late to the Kasey Party! 😊
Absolutely. She is the real deal!
Great lyrics are just great lyrics. Loved the reaction.
Subscribed.😊
Thank you for the Sub. She took that song new places.
Amazing.
If I could time travel, first stop would be that performance.
I was telling someone how badly I wish I could have been there.
this has to be the best reaction that I have seen...................loved it
Thank you.💕
Kasey and the Deadringer band were great.
I wasn’t aware of the band name. Nice. I like knowing that.
Crazzzyyy good aint it, sublime performance. Your 'little neighborhood on the internet' is super cool, thanks
Thank you for stopping in! It was so good!
Yours is the first reaction that has reflected my own in seeing and hearing this for this first time. Subbed.
Oh, wow. Thank you. Sincerely honored
You nailed it!! It’s all about the story!! ❤
Check out some of Kasey's hit songs: Not Pretty Enough(This is her go at mainstream radio for not playing her music), Ain't No Little Girl, The Captain, If We Had A Child(with Keith Urban).
Best reaction to this yet and I've seen a ton of them. Thanks.
Thank you!
amazing!!
Absolutely amazing!
I cry every time
This is the best version of this song that I have ever heard.
As a Stan. ❤️
Yes! Fist bump!!
Great reaction
Thank you💕💕
Just heard her cover last night and am falling down the reaction videos rabbit hole still..
I had this on repeat!!
A group called Mountain Head does a cover of a
Wu-Tang Clan/ODB song Shimmy Shimmy Ya that is so good that Wu-Tang posted it to their own UA-cam channel and thats the video you should use. Mountain Head has some great stuff like We Stole Your Head that is great!! Great reaction !!!
Thank you. I should watch both. ☺️
You rock lady. Nice
Thank you.💕💕
While you mention 'Sumertime', check out Peter Gabriel's version feat. Larry Adler on harmonica!
This song is now on Spotify.
It deserves to be. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much. She took this song and made it fit her. And did it with expertise and flair! She has made me a fan
Best reaction ever welcome to Australia
Oh, thank you so much!
My dear girl. You are the best. You get it !!!!
Oh, thank you! I appreciate you watching with me.
You really should check her rip this out 'Kasey Chambers - Seven Nation Army - Live in Berkeley, California - 2017-03-09'
From Emmy Lou Harris to Pink Floyd in 8 minutes
Yes!!
You should check out John Farnham - Help (Beatles cover). Another Aussie changing it up and making it his own. Or watch one of Farnsey's originals like You're the Voice
I will have to try another of his. I did a reaction to help( it was marvelous) but the video was blocked.
Totally understand about what's behind the lyrics in summertime also you are my sunshine is very dark a singer songwriter called Alice Kristiansen does a great cover with her friend slow and dark with beautiful voices.
✌️❤️🏴
Yes! Yes, if it’s too proper.. it’s not understanding
Interesting!
Just a Little Trivia... that's Kasey's father on Slide/Steel Guitar... from the family band "Dead Ringer Band" to absolutely killing Eminem... what more could you ask for?
She left nowhere else to go in this song. That is it😉
Listen to Matt Corby songs: 'Brother' on Triple JJJ and Matt Corby 'Made Stone' great Aussie musician and Aalso the Tesky Brother’s 'Rain' and a few others from the Tesky Brother’s another Aussie Band. You won't be disappointed Sweet Redhead 😊
Thank you so much for these suggestions!!
Welclme to Australia we afe very talented 😅
I agree with that
