I remember gigging back in the day and sound engineers were nothing like you. Those little compliments you give to people and the general positive attitude makes all the difference. You're taking pride in making these bands sound the best version of themselves and I think that translates to a better performance and experience for the audience.
That’s the job! I love when good bands come in and kill it on stage. These 3 bands couldn’t be more professional and cool to work with, which motivates me to do even better at my job.
Frrrr people forget to lead with kindness
I was literally going to comment the same thing verbatim. Well done Mr. Soundguy. You're great mannerisms and positive attitude are not lost on us.
For alot of people that helps. the trick is to gain the experience of knowing which ones that wont help at all or make things worse with. and its the worst when its the talent.
Most soundmen are poorly paid, if they're paid by the venue at all. They have to deal with assholes who refuse to turn their amps down. I ALWAYS tip my sound guy before a gig, and I've ALWAYS gotten a better sound check just by being a human towards them.
I love that there's young bands still carrying the 80's rock/metal torch!
It really is awesome to see young bands play in that style.
Engineering Live FOH Sound, Monitors, and Lighting...wow. Underrated. Also, what a blessing to have a backline that the entire tour uses.
This was one of the smoothest tour packages I ever worked.
@@chrishammillaudio PA sounds great, lights work.... I found this irrationally funny. Having also done all three roles and beaming lyrics (in a church setting) I feel this so hard. Great video, great work.
@@liamsmith1286 Appreciate it!
This is killer! Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed!
Woah.... Metal Blade Records commented :0
@@whitepolarbearmc8367 I got several official follows on IG too. This algorithm thing is neat!
Man these videos are so fascinating and fun to watch. Please keep them coming!
That's the plan!
Yea that’sooo cool😊
After 30+ years in the studio, I kinda like running live sound. It's a gratifying job. It's like flying a plane. When I see the band members are not looking at me and their dancing around then I know my job is good. If the crowd is having a good time then I know my mix is good. If it ain't, someone will let you know. There's a sound man in every crowd. Lol
It’s certainly a challenging job yet equally rewarding. Love doing this over studio tracking. Let the music be music instead of chasing perfection.
Plenty of people who are sound, mix, frequency illiterate will also come to complain about anything, but it’s venue specific for sure. I’ve thankfully never been critiqued by a random “sound guy” before, but they sure like to let you know when they are one.
I've played dingbatz probably 50 times over the last ten years, and the sound is always amazing compared to most small venues I've played
Happy to hear that! What’s your band/s that played there? Maybe I did sound for you one night 😅
@@chrishammillaudio Fiakra, the power metal band with the swords and kilts
@@saffyreday851 Swords and kilts?! That sounds fucking awesome!
@@saffyreday851 I don't recall that name, so I probably did not do sound for you, but with a description like that I definitely want to see you guys perform here again.
33:10 This is the part I miss most about being a sound engineer. The calm before and after each event paints things in a very different light and gives a lot of appreciation to the efforts and skill of those involved in "making the magic happen".
Absolutely. I really only take a breath in the 20 minutes before and after a show. That time after sound check before doors is low key my favorite time.
Damn, 'Night Demon' sounded fantastic.
They certainly did
Laura on the lights for Night Demon great job Laura.
She killed!
GREAT! As an audio engineer and musician it's awesome to learn about the live sound process, please keep them coming!
Happy to make this content.
I am not a professional musician nor do I work with live events, but this video mesmerized me from beginning to end. It's fascinating to see all the work and love involved in producing live music, something that most of the public can't even imagine. Keep up with the great work!
Thanks a lot!
One thing I learned in a band is to always thank the sound engineer even before the gig begins, especially during soundcheck. I request all my band members to acknowledge and say Hi to the sound engineer. You have no idea how amazing they make you sound when you make them feel as one with the band!
A simple hello goes a long way.
Let's go!!! Yesterday I watched the other soundcheck video and I enjoyed it so much. I am happy to see good content like this.
Happy to provide
I’m a Metal musican… and oh boy I’ve had my fair share of good and bad sound guys… PLEASE keep uploading, your FOH POV are the best… super chill yet so informative
I’m working on a video comprising the most common mistakes/faux pas sound guys make from the POV of musicians. Feel free to leave comments about your worst experiences or worst habits sound guys do that get under your skin the most.
Appreciate the support. Happy to keep making these!
@@chrishammillaudio one time a sound guy told me “nah we don’t need to mic up your cab… no one is really watching anyway; plus you have a 4x12 your not going to need it” … then proceeded to play one of the best sets at my COUNTY FAIR while having a guitarist mime along with a Singer, Bassist, and Drummer (because he bothered to mic those), by the end of the gig, my Master Volume on my amp was at about 9 and channel volume about 9 as well
I was 100% with the sound guy at the whole "not micing your cab" thing until you said COUNTY FAIR. Oof...
Yeah, small rooms you almost don't need to mic a 4x12. Large outdoor venues and especially open air settings like a fair... what?! How/why he didn't mic your cab is mind boggling. Your master at 9!?
@@chrishammillaudio somewhere around 9 yup, that was not a fun day for me
I remember my young days on the road, every day was the same, but it was funny. Arriving, unload the gear, soundcheck, some dinner, play it loud, finish and sleep. That was the age when i did learn more than ever.
I’ve always fantasized about what that life would be like. If I could be a traveling audio tech for a band that would be really cool.
I know that most of us are here for the audio bit but I have to compliment the lighting setup too.
With lots of small venues there is usually a on or off button
The lighting makes for a far better experience both for the bands and the audience. Since we don't have a dedicated LT we have the lighting console set up to do various preset effects so it's easy for us to do both light and sound during a show.
On point! A lot of bands will never get to experience what your affording them to experience. Mad props
Great video, brings back memories of playing. I really like how you give positive feedback during the soundcheck like "that sounds dope" etc, really helps with the confidence when playing. Not many realise being an engineer you need to have good people skills to be truly good at the job. I get it's tough dealing with bands with egos way above their talent but if I could tell the engineer was at least friendly it made such a difference. Great to see your passion 🙂
Appreciate it!
As a student music producer and a band member this is amazingly satisfying and interesting to watch :)
Makes me wanna see your daily life as a person documented hahah
Glad you enjoy it.
I love watching these sort of things from the FOH perspective. As a musician who tours infrequently around the US, it’s nice to see the day-to-day operations of the individuals helping make our shows happen. Keep it up good sir.

Great vid again Chris! I look forward to seeing your eq/dym settings on each channel! Especially on bass guitar. The tone for bass in the headline band was great!
That was a vintage Ampeg going direct. I don’t know the bad guitar model used but that was a direct signal from the Ampeg.
Great upload and sound!

That was really cool to watch and see behind the scenes what a professional live sound engineer does. Thanks for sharing and glad you get to do what you love for a living.

Very cool! Never heard of Night Demon before, they're great
As a guy who has played music for 25 years, roughly 10 bands most of them metal.... You are a breath of fresh air. I'm glad everybody sees what it's like to be a good sound man and good lighting technician using quality equipment like the x32, very cool. I think everyone should watch this video if they want to know how hard y'all work
Don’t just watch this video, watch all of my videos and subscribe!
Now thats how its done. Thanks for the posting and having from beginning to the end of show
Appreciate it 🤘
Amazing job. I have played many gigs and it is always sooooo reassuring when you load in and the sound guy actually is interested in your sound and not just going through the motions. Keep doing what you are doing!
Every band is different and needs different mixes. I don’t get why any sound guy would just go through the motions.
Top class. Good work fella.
Appreciate it!
This is an awesome video. Thanks man!
You’re welcome!
As a band member, this is very informative and good content!
Thanks for making it :)
You’re welcome! 🤘
Great video dude, it’s good to see a house tech caring about the venue and putting on a good show!
I love my job. It's second nature to care.
Those drums sounded amazing!!!!
They sure did. All the drummers played consistently and gave great performances.

Dropping 3 POV videos this week from a busy weekend of shows.
Haunt are a killer band, I love 'em to bits. And you, my man, got their sound absolutely fantastic and spot on!

Great video Chris, it brings back many memories of when I was a sound engineer during the '80s and early '90s (pre-digital desks) here in Australia.
Greetings! Glad you enjoyed.
Good Stuff Chris.. This is what I deal with starting from May 6th until Oct. Keep these coming. I use a different board but the basics are are there !!! Exactly the way I would do sound check

Awesome rawness to the glorified job shown here, loved it! MORE

New content every time I do a show.
Great Video Chris! Thankyou so much for showing everything, I'm 19 and starting university for Audio Engineering in September and it's great to see what I get to look forward to :) These videos are fantastic and it would be mint if you did more and talked through your rig
You will learn more by doing than any professor will ever teach you. Get an internship and learn from the pros who are actually working. Best of luck.
Would love to see more of these!

Thanks to you i found out about Night Demon, wow. Great work mate.
Glad you found another awesome band to listen to
really enjoyed this
Glad you enjoyed!
I really like your Workflow. Very similar to how I work. Your the first one I see other than myself and the People, I've thought, that connects the Ends of XLR Cables when wrapped up. Keeps them neater!
Not everyone does this but it definitely keeps them neat when I don’t have Velcro wraps.
@@chrishammillaudio people give me shit for doing it all the time😅
Thank you.
That was great night! Sound was killer.
The musicians on stage were even better 🤘
i love that you didnt have one negative thing to say about the bands or their equipment and even helpin the second bands light tech make it through the set, and you still made them all sound killer. i cant stand engineers that act like their job sucks. i just subscribed lookin forward to seein more of your stuff man please keep it up!
