  • A quick video going over what I think are the best starting points in the Touhou series, plus a couple other things.
    Touhou Wiki: en.touhouwiki.net
    Touhou games on Steam: hakureishrine.org
    Translation patches: thpatch.net
The games that are not available on Steam at the moment can only be obtained physically.
Touhou Wiki offers some options as to where you can buy the games, along with all the other media:
    en.touhouwiki....
Alternatively, if importing physical media is not an option for you just, y'know, do some searches. You'll find them.

For game, I'd recommend 7 over 10. 10 has the "bad" continue system that forces you to restart a stage over and over (and even if you managed to pass the stage, you still get the bad ending). Classic Continue allows players to get better at the game more naturally.
Though 7 isn't on steam, I think anyone looking to play the extra popular Touhou 6 will find a way to "get" it (unless Zun stops playing around and release 6-7-8 on steam. Even with the source code lost, a copy of the game's CD along with a few patches should do the trick).

Normies start with Touhou 6. Chads start with Touhou 1. Most start with random fanon.

I started from the very first game and made my way up slowly. This is what I personally consider the way to go. But not just for Touhou, for video games in general. Starting in the middle makes no sense to me. Starting from the very first entry lets you truly apprechiate where a series came from and where it is now.
I would also not recommend playing any of these games on easy when you first play them. I did that. I played so much on easy that i became good enough for normal at first but not good enough to actually being able to beat normal. As always, everyone has different skillsets and experiences when it comes to where to start and how to start.

Hm. Yeah... In my version of this video, I put down Touhou 14 for one of the 'first game' choices. But honestly, I kind of wish I put Touhou 10. Definitely a better start.

I was gonna put 14 as another alternative but thought I had too many already. Still a good choice though, it's a fairly simple game overall.

PC98 games are anywhere from easy to hard honestly.
HRtP can be cheesed, easiest Lunatic clear in my life.
SoEW is janky with a lot of missing features but it doesn't really get evil until Lunatic and Extra since Hard is just "add a second slower bullet to every spawned bullet" which doesn't change how you dodge certain attacks lol.
PoDD is... well it's a Phantasmagoria so yeah it's not easy.
Lotus Land Story showers you in lives and bombs (5 extends! 3 1ups! 4 bomb items! One bomb after each stage clear! On default settings this adds up to 11 lives and 31 bombs!) so it's quite forgiving.
Mystic Square is actually kinda challenging, given it uses item-based extends in a game without PoC. A beginner might get like 2-3 item extends on top of the 2 1ups, which adds up to like 7-8 lives with the starting three. In contrast score-based extends in SoEW and LLS where you can easily get the 5 extends on top of the 1-ups.

If you're mainly a console player, there's still some decent places to start. Touhou 15.5 is a pretty chill story by Touhou standards and its tag team system is used for some rather creative fights in story mode. For the official fangames on consoles, Luna Nights' gameplay and freemium status have made it popular even with people that haven't played any Touhou games up to that point and Touhou New World adapts a key event crucial to the lore of the modern era while also being pretty fun on its own.
Spell Bubble is... ok, but the spell card system and certain custom rules can make the harder fights really aggravating. It can still be interesting for hololive fans given the collab with Marine and other talents.
Genso Wanderer can be fun but it can also be rather frustrating due to being a roguelike without a system to make you lose all progress when you lose to a cheap trap other than hard resets. It doesn't help that it goes way overboard with the 99 floor dungeons (that often ban bringing in items or fusion as well). Just play Lotus Labyrinth, it's better in every way that isn't friendly AI.
Don't play Burst Kobuto V. Its only selling point of being the first Touhou game on Switch became obsolete the moment Genso Wanderer and Azure Reflections became available there too. The gameplay is extremely clunky for a fighting game and it's the kind of game that thinks memes are inherently funny to the point that the first interaction in the game is Reimu calling Cirno a (9) and a Reimu Yukkuri is the final boss.

    0:37: "videogame? book? manga?"
    ...Music? 🙃
Soundtracks for 8, 2, and 10.5, plus music collection 3, in order of probable interest.
8 is the finalization of the sound the series has been defined by ever since.
2 both demonstrates the early establishment of formatting, and showcases the original sound the series started with.
10.5 is well balanced between Akiyama's original compositions and his remixes, which are the musical identity of the fighting games.
Music Collection Vol. 3 has enough original tracks to demonstrate their unique style, but also has a good supply of his remixes (also synergizes well with the soundtrack from 8).

The late PC 98 games aren't that different from the windows era. Heck, they even have focus mode and deathbombs. And have a better interpretation of the gimmick of Touhou 6.
They lack replays, stage practice, the PoC line and Spellcards, thought.
