It's pretty interesting seeing the perspective of a new 2hu player. Especially when you say a pattern is "impossible" when it's "pretty easy" to "not that bad" and I can guarantee that you'll be able to think the same thing given enough practice.
important thing about the practice: the best way is to not blindly try the pattern but try to *see* the behaviour of bullets, which often can be done only by looking at the whole thing
"stage 4 of PCB was nothing but pain and suffering" yeahhhh stage 4 is infamous for that lol but if your in the right possisions it can be delt with easily
PC-98 isn't the same thing as Windows 98. The first 5 Touhou games were released on a japanese home computer called a PC-98. It's pretty easy to emulate nowadays. Nice to see more people posting videos of their first experiences with Touhou, though.
I'm still planning on trying to upgrade my PC98 to 486 to play the games.... but the main problem was I always only got the games as HDD images that are impossible to transfer instead of the disk images...
^ x) id also recommend setting your windows to have access to the japanese language pack/localization just so the kanji can render properly (i think this is also required for the english patches for the first 5 games)
"language for non-unicode program" setting seemed really important in some japanese games, might require some extra clicking to see it. it didn't really seem to be much of an issue leaving it at Japanese either.
12:54 Reisen doesn't control time, Sakuya does. What Reisen does is that she creates illusions and changes your perception of bullets. She has a passive ability that when anybody looks into her eyes they go mad instantly (kinda like clownpiece's torch from LoLK) Btw in IN you missed a route, after beating Eirin without continues you can do the game again and fight another last boss, which is the true last one PoFV's IA is indeed scripted and a bit cheating, Shiki Eiki won't take damage unless you survive one or two minutes
More specifically with Reisen, (because I think her powers are just really freaking cool,) she can manipulate light waves, sound waves, and brain waves that come within her field of vision. Letting her make people see and hear things that aren't there, or stop them from seeing and hearing things that are. Making direct eye contact with her exposes your brain waves to her manipulation, and she can mess up somebody's mind very badly if she wanted to. Although she's noted to be level-headed, and tends to bottle up her frustrations. So you'd have to really tick her off to make her do something that would cause permanent damage. I also like how she has the option to drop the illusion combat at any time in favor of just shooting dangerous laser beams and sonic booms out of her eyes.
@@Havic101-atc from the mangas, we learn that Reisen can actually manipulate *any* kind of wave, to a pretty huge extent. Her power is really more on par to what Yukari and other heavy-hitters can do in regards to reality-warping potential.
@Ajarylee true, took me months to finally 1cc games, my best scores are in TH18, i have beaten the entire game with all characters, i can use every single one of the characters and i have unlocked ALL cards, the only card left is the extra stage boss one
What I believe some people don't realize when first playing touhou is that the playable character you choose can affect bosses. Like in 8, choosing Reimu will have Marisa as a boss, and vice versa; in 6, Patchouli's spell cards change depending on who you choose
It's actually pretty common that the 4th boss specifically change depending on your starting character/shot type. I remember that was the case for 6, 7, 8, I think 11 does that too, and I'm not sure for the following ones.
@@wansdich In PCB it's not the shot type or character, but which sister you damage the most, I abused this heavily to fight Lunasa instead of her sisters.
That is when he realize that the community deems you have conquered a game after you 1cc it. I was going insane knowing that information on my first time around but things have changed and I like to do 1cc now.
"...Final boss, Eirin." Uh... about that... Still, it's always nice to see more people try out this series. If you were looking for good bullet hell games, you definitely picked the right place to look.
CAVE makes touhou look like a dollar store knockoff, because it kinda is. No offense. Touhou was the bridge that got me into that stuff though and for that I’m thankful
@@HieronymousLex CAVE decided to stay true to arcade mentality. DonPachi has made people fear bees. (And also magical girls if you're playing the very last one lol)
@@HieronymousLex your wording makes it look more like an unfair comparison based on perceived difficulty (as in weenie hut jr vs the salty spitoon) rather than quality (and given your usage of "no offense" then you are most likely deliberate with your selection of words), sure...if you want a more hardcore experience then CAVE games are the natural progression (and i do see the appeal of it), but it isn't necessarily better nor everyone is looking for that kind of experience (there is a reason why touhou is more known than CAVE and as LunarRay implies, touhou is not arcade), and if you want to brag that you've beaten a bullet hell to your friends then 1cc'ing any touhou game on normal is a perfectly acceptable badge of honor
Welcome to Touhou! For the record you don't really have to pay a lot of attention to time in IN. I straight up didn't know the time mechanic was a thing when I first played IN and I still beat it. It only comes into play if you are using all 5 continues or for something else in the game you probably haven't seen yet so I'll leave it a secret. Side note but I really recommend you try 1ccing IN (beating without using a continue), it's the easiest game of the 4 to do and it was my first 1cc too!
Wait, really? It took me weeks of attempts to do IN, I just found kaguya really hard especially, but I could beat PCB and EoSD in only like half the time.
@@olixx1213 eh, IN is called the easiest Touhou game because its Easy mode is easiest. It's normal is still on the easier end, but I wouldn't call it easiest. PCB is the opposite in this regard where it actually has a relatively difficult Easy mode, but it's normal is considered one of the easiest.
Couple things about Yuyuko (PCB's final boss). The pattern you deemed impossible to clear without bombs is there to train you to direct enemy attacks in a way that allows you "safe" damage time. In essence, you move to an edge or a corner of the screen, wait until the homing part of the pattern reaches you, then move away and use these precious seconds to do damage to the boss. This is an essential tactic against homing attacks where you can't survive by simply doing small dodges under the boss. Second is that technically Yuyuko does not revive herself for the final attack. I mean, kinda, but it's not the Yuyuko you fought up until now. In short, throughout the game Yuyuko has been gathering spring essence (those pink pickups) to resurrect a giant tree so she could free the soul of someone sealed within. To do this the tree needs to bloom fully and the protagonist has the required amount. In the end Yuyuko is defeated, leaving only the almost blooming tree which is enough to weaken the seal to the point that the sealed soul is temporarily freed. This soul is the real Yuyuko. Unbeknownst to the Yuyuko you fought until now, it was her soul that was bound in the tree. The soul is incorporeal and undamageable and manages to expel enough spring essence to cause the tree to go back to hibernation. The reason the soul did this was that Yuyuko herself gave her life to seal the tree when she was alive. The tree is kind of a demon tree that causes death when in full bloom so Yuyuko's soul's first action was to make sure the tree would stay dormant. It's kind of convoluted but the Yuyuko you fought anc continues to appear in the series is really the ghost of the original Yuyuko who gave her life to seal the tree.
it is true that her 3rd spell isn't as "horizontally dodgeable" as others, but you can't say it is "training you" since it is midway through the final boss, and given that youmu and the prismriver sistesr have some unique mechanics to them it is pretty hard to say that any previous boss in pcb prepares you for that particular spell, you just have to kite the thing using some sort of circular motion that requires you to go upwards (i stopped at stage 4 because anything below has even simpler patterns to dodge)
12:23 Well, it isn’t a new feature, you can death bomb in every touhou game (except for the pc-98), the only difference in Touhou 8 is that the window is a lot bigger during spell cards and it cost 2 bombs instead of 1. Also while speaking about touhou 8, there are 2 final bosses. After beating the game 1 time so can you replay the game again with the same character. And after getting to the end of stage 5 so do you get an option to go path B which means that you will fight Kaguya instead of Erin, this is also necessary if you want to play the extra stage. You can also unlock the extra stages in the other games that you have played if you beat it without using any continuous if you didn’t know that. The difficulty in the extra stages is higher than the normal game (lunatic mode is still harder) so I would recommend getting a bit more familiar with the bullet hell games before trying it. Nice video
@@penisman5000 Well you know. If Catapu1t doesn’t make a video then am I going to spread my wisdom somewhere else (also I never thought I would be recognized somewhere else lol) Oh yeah, one last thing. Cool seeing you here too
Jun'ya Ōta, the creator of Touhou Project, must beat his own bullet patterns without losing a life or use a bomb with controller (I don't know if he is still using controller or not), that is nuts. As nuts as GeoDash level creator with their demon level.
that is straight up a lie quite numerous patterns are randomised in the games, take the most recent game as example: stage 4 yellow spam section there's no way he went to beat this pattern without using anything, what's more likely is that he designed it they way it is to practically force you to use the resources you have he doesn't need to beat his own creation w/o anything, this isn't some geometry dash level he created
@@HyperVanilo there are hints in the last 2 games that show ZUN's stand on the clears he values the "No-Miss" clears the most, despite the community valuing the NN(N(N)) runs example I gave is what's considered literal "cancer pattern" for the LNNN by the community
His philosophy is to make each individual section possible to do without a bomb, but game specific mechanics are not bombs. In the most severe case, Fairy Wars, even a TAS can't clear high difficulties or Extra without the freeze.
7:27 Patchouli pretty much varies her spellcards based on which shottype and character you chose, she's hard because when you play at hard mode or lunatic mode, her true power gets unleashed, the clock lasers rotate faster and the bullets block your path without mercy, there's a spellcard where she blocks the sides of your character with lasers and shoots core bullets(big bullets with the hitbox on the transparent part) at you and another one where she randomly spreads bullets while a cascade of bullets fall from the left side of the screen. However, the prismriver sisters depends on which sister you've damaged the most, but they're not really that hard, i successfully beat them in lunatic mode and they weren't that hard as Patchouli, that's because unlike Patchouli, the sisters have patterns that are easier to understand or avoid, since the bullets are slower but invade the screen, however you learn how to avoid them since there's always a safe exit somewhere in the danmaku.
quite nice video, though there's one particular mistake: NEC PC-98 doesn't mean Windows 98 (though it can be installed there) it can be emulated quite easily actually, far less resource-consuming than a Windows 2000 VM also, Touhou games are usually easier when memorized and learned - here's the list of reasons why memorizing and figuring out things works better than pure dodging (though pure dodging is fun): -Patchouli uses different spellcards depending on which shottype you have. you had the worst shottype and the worst spellcards. (homing Reimu is barely ever good) -the laser attack is easy if you know what to do - misdirect bullets into a direction away from where the lasers will appear, and repeat that over and over. i haven't played EoSD in a while, but i think that's how you do it. -Sakuya's misdirection is a trick as the name hints, you actually barely have to move to survive it - just tap slightly to juuust dodge all that and return to the middle once Sakuya is about to shoot out another barrage. -Sakuya herself is one of the easier Stage 5 bosses on Normal and Hard - she doesn't have much spellcards nor health, her nonspells are pretty easy and the spellcards aside from the last one don't really serve much purpose. she DOES overwhelm a new player with every spellcard she does, but just like Reisen, once you know what to do, it should be easier to pull off than say, Youmu. -if you set lives higher in the settings of EoSD, bad news, that's a trick - while it does actually sort of help new players in the later three games, in EoSD that means your score is pretty much screwed, which, therefore, means that you will get less lives than someone with the default life counter. -PCB is the least complex to a new player, but i'd argue it's the actual hardest of the early Windows. EoSD becomes easy once you realize a lot of the tricks, and IN is not that hard aside from Eirin's optional final spell (aGH), but PCB may have an easy final battle, but it still has Youmu, who, unlike Sakuya or Reisen, doesn't simply fall to tricks and requires dodging, a lot of it, and yes, Stage 4. -also, you get to choose which Prismriver you battle in Stage 4 - first, it depends on choice of player character, then it depends on who you focus on defeating during their first concert spellcard. whoever told you they're the easiest Stage 4 boss is wrong, unless they're talking about particularly skilled play, in which case i can't tell you because i don't know which are easier to beat on such level, but on just a casual run or on 1cc's, they are a pain both on Normal and Hard compared to some others -PCB Sakuya is also pretty much the best character to play as when you're a new player, so there's that. -staying in Youkai form in IN most of the time is actually easier. also, the time mechanic barely even matters if you do a 1cc, speaking of, you need to do that to get to and beat Kagu- huh. no Kaguya? alright then. -PoFV is based off PoDD, an older Touhou game, and is mostly a similar game to Twinkle Star Sprites, but PoFV deviates from it far more, and i like that. -also, each boss in PoFV eventually dies no matter what - to kill the final boss, you have to either get lucky or just survive for 5 minutes, since around after that mark, the boss will start doing dumb mistakes and eventually die, which you seemed to realize. -it's better to keep a Gauge 4 always, since it deactivates the boss appearence on your half of the screen and activates one on the other. unless you're in a particularly tough situation, it's better to always have it prepared. -ehh, i wouldn't really agree. i'd say EoSD is the worst, since aside from the EXTRA, it really doesn't have much going for it, especially since it's pretty much an inferior version of LLS+MS. also, you can also go forward in terms of Touhou games - but remember, whereas the PC-98 ones are actually mostly easier on Normal (and harder on EXTRA), Touhou games starting with MoF only get harder, as you can no longer set lives higher (it's better to do a run of at least one game before that without the extra lives set higher in options, since getting used to it by playing a new game is way harder), and SA is most likely a game you will NOT like if you don't like memorization, as that is pretty much the key to even surviving that game. then comes UFO, which is even harder. TD is easy, even if stingy on resources, DDC is easy but only if you know which character to pick, LoLK is pretty mad and everything after that ranges in difficulty wildly, but unless you cheese it with dozens of cards, UM (18) is also one of the harder ones. good luck if you do play any of those in the future
SoEW I'd say is an exception to the PC-98 games being easier on Normal. Though it only has 5 stages and gives you more bombs the less lives you have after a pichuun, it doesn't have deathbombing and focus/shift mode.
@@pandakekok7319 fair, even though i'd argue it's still easier than some of the normal modes starting with 10 and definitely easier on hard than some of their hard modes.
eeeh, imo th11 is way harder than 12 on th11 to get extra lives you need to not die in a boss attack, it's kinda ironic that to get less lives you need to be good enough to not need lives, took me ages to beat it while th12 you can strategize your UFOs to get extra lives and bombs + you don't need to 1cc to get to kaguya, just beat the game once and get to stage 6, unless u mean be 1cc'ing until stage 6 which idk if it happens or kot currently trying to beat th11 and 12 on extra... suffering
@@evmy1 for 11, what makes it slightly easier is that you can bomb and still get lives no matter what also, you do need a 1cc to beat Kaguya - unlocking her doesn't require a 1cc, though.
I think a big part of what makes bullet hells “hard” for most players is just that most players don’t actually have any experience with the genre. Mario would be hard for you too if you waited until your teens or adult years to play platformers for the first time!
its usuallt because the new players focus on all of the screen and panic by starting to move too much bullet hells usuallt require a lot of memorization and focusing on the area where you know bullets are gonna come from and touch you in a 1 second timewindow from now, both really hard skills to master
@@noobfart I would argue that bullet hells require far less memorization than traditional shoot ‘em ups. They give you more time to react and read patterns. The ideal place to look is in between your ship and the top of the screen, closer to your ship. And you’re trying to read ahead through time basically. The faster the bullet speed, the higher towards the top of the screen you look so you have more time to react. Where to look is actually a really complicated subject but you kinda figure it out naturally. Definitely don’t stare directly at enemies or at yourself while you’re dodging though
@@noobfart but you’re right that new players move too much. Slowly tap dodging to conserve and control screen space and cause aimed bullets to miss you is necessary
Ah, the poor innocent child who plays on normal difficulty and has never seen the extra level bosses. This review made me smile very hard. In any case, welcome, I'm glad that you liked these games.
for the record i am well aware of vms and emulator and have used them in the past, i just couldn't be bothered to set one up since a lot of the time they take a lot of fiddling to run smoothly :)
Nice seeing more people getting into Touhou. I started playing a little over a year ago, and had a pretty similar experience to yours. I've managed to 1CC a few of the games now, but I can't beat any of the extra stages. I've kind of stopped playing the main series now, I'm more into the characters and music. I absolutely love how dedicated the fanbase is. There's so much cool fanart, animations, music, and games. There's even an anime series made entirely by fans! I urge you to check out some fanworks. By the way, I love your editing! Your channel deserves so much more attention. Thanks for the awesome video!
Uhhh, should we tell him that to actually "beat" the games, you need to do it without continues? Anyway, always fun to see a new player's first impressions, and hope you have fun with the rest of the series. Some of the best games are still yet to come.
@@T33K3SS3LCH3N The correct term would be a 1CC. Bombless is absolutely not a requirement and players should feel free to use their bombs. Although if someone says they "beat the game", it's not necessarily the case that they didn't use continues as the terminology has no set meaning
It pisses me off when a game with already límites continues does that. Like why even give you continues at all if they're not infinite AND using them locks you out of the "true" ending.
Unsurprisingly, this literally describes my first experiences with Touhou, but DAMN when I saw this video in my recommended I thought this was gonna have at least 1k views, You seem to be a very underrated channel considering the production value of this video and absolutely deserve more than 79 subscribers. I definitely look forward to watching your future videos in this style! この動画の質は抜群ですよ! thanks so much! but sadly i think i'll just be skipping out on the pc98 games and go straight to the newer ones. apologies if you wanted me to tackle those but i do hope you'll stick around for what's to come :)
@@SlxxplessNights The pc 98 stuff has it’s own separate story and there are very few characters from it that are even relevant. Most of those games are considered “non cannon” by most of the fanbase.
It's always refreshing to see a new player's perspective to touhou games. I played for like a year now, and managed to get normal 1cc on all of the games and some few lunatic 1ccs here and there. At this time I pretty much forgot the feeling of struggling against a spell that I saw nowadays as pretty easy. Hope you keep enjoying the games when you decide to continue on the newer games (LoLK seems like a good game to play *troll* )
You can actually use a bomb to cancel out getting hit in all games from the 6th game onward, the window is just a lot longer when you play as reimu in Imperishable Night
That was nice, I hope you'll play and review the others. I don't expect you to play the fighters but I'm interested in your take about the other spinoffs, expecially 12.8: Fairy Wars. I also hope you'll actually *complete* one of them with a 1CC. It's important for the good endings and most importantly for unlocking the extra stage and boss.
Good job clearing your first touhou games. It would be interesting to see you play the other games next. Mountain of Faith (Touhou 10) will be interesting, considering how the continue system works and the power-bomb system. Its pretty easy and forgiving if you know how to use your bombs properly -and infinitely easier if you use the marisa b 3 power glitch lol.- That being said, there are more to these games, which are the extra stages, but they can only be unlocked if you beat the game without using continues. Considering your experience, you still have a long way to go, but you should be able to build up your skill for it. The extra stages feel harder as its usually as hard as the entire game, but compressed into one long stage. The only exception is PoFV, which is more of a challenge mode (you're always on last hit, but bosses last shorter with harder patterns) rather than an actual separate stage. Now let's talk a bit about the games you played, starting of with EoSD. A lot of people play this as their first game because its the first windows game and has very simple mechanics. However, its not the easiest, but it can set you up for the next games. This game is indeed RNG heavy, as its more focused on raw dodging skills than routing. It can give you walls if it wants to, but its usually on the higher difficulties. Patchouli is hard, but only her spells. Her nonspells can be routed. Sakuya is quite the opposite, she has hard nonspells and not so bad spells, if you know what you are doing (except the final). Now let's go to PCB. It actually is a really easy game for beginners because of the border mechanic, which is how you beat it in such low attempts. Here's a fun fact, you can also shoot unfocused and the cherry meter will go up faster, but its not too important outside of scoring. Stage 4 is actually not that hard. It is long, i agree, its like almost 4 minutes long. The stage can be trivialized by a bit of routing and not shooting certain enemies. Lily White (the midboss) is the only really difficult section imo. The last fairy is completely static, so just memorize it, or you can bomb it so you can get your bomb back (Gastari, 2022). Considering you play as Sakuya, you will always encounter Merlin as the opener. Her first nonspell is her hardest attack, but all of it is aimed (even the other nonspells). Now the first spell is interesting, because you can actually choose which one you want to fight for the second phase. It is determined by the boss you damaged the most. In normal, merlin shouldnt be too bad. I never fought lunasa (black prismriver) so i dont have much opinions on her, she might be the easiest one. Lyrica (red prismriver) is funny. Her nonspells are really easy, you just sidestep, but her spell in lunatic is much more easier than in normal, its ridiculous. She is a go to for lunatic but for normal, just go with either lunasa or merlin. Youmu is pretty fun, yes. Another fun fact, you can misdirect her midboss and opener nonspells, it makes things a lot easier to dodge. You cant do it on the stage 6 nonspell though, but its easier to do the intended way anyways. On yuyuko's third spell, its all aimed (again), so if you want to dodge it, just find a route for it. Its still hard though, so might as well just bomb. I'm surprised you didn't like IN that much, but it's a pretty hard game when it comes to patterns, so its pretty much expected. The time mechanic can be annoying, but it actually makes the game pretty interesting to play at least. A bit of high level play, i know. If you beat the game with all teams, solo shots are unlocked (you can play as one character rather than a team). Depending on the team, you fight either Reimu or Marisa in stage 4. Marisa is bullet dense but pretty straightforward. Reimu is aimed + rng bullets. She also has orbs, which can catch you off guard if youre not careful. Both are hard on their own ways. Reisen is probably the most fun stage 5 boss imo. Her gimmick is interesting, but the way its implemented in the game makes it really fun. Stage 6 is really good, so good it probably doesn't need a second stage 6. Yes, there's another version of stage 6, which can only be played if you reach the stage in 1cc pace, and after beating the game at least once (even with continues iirc). It's somewhat similar to the normal stage 6, only slightly harder. You know the character that appears in eirin's last spell? Yes, that's Kaguya, you fight her in this stage. You might've heard a remix of her theme from the square game you mentioned earlier in the video. She's kinda harder than eirin though. And unlike eirin, she has 5 last spells, but you wont get all of them depending on the time, but like eirin's last spell, if you get there, you basically beat the game. PoFV is strange, but kinda fun. I expected you to not like it that much as a beginner. Its a very technical game, so knowing the mechanics and tricks (also being good at the game) is the key. You also need to get used to its controls, as it is really different from the classic touhou games. This game is basically the windows version of Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream (Touhou 3), but i honestly find PoDD much more fun, that is if you dont include the final boss, which is way harder than eiki. That game is also inspired by Twinkle Star Sprites, a shmup with similar mechanics. Here's something you need to know. The bosses have an invisible timer. Unless that timer runs out, it will keep dodging forever. Once it times out, it gives itself a random chance to get hit. It also varies between matches. The first match is always the longest, and it will decrease on further matches. Eiki's timer is either infinite or just really long (not sure), which is why its near impossible to beat her on the first match (not sure if this applies to all difficulties). Some shots are broken and also break the AI, which makes the game really easy, which are Medicine and Aya. There's a lot to learn in this game, which is not that great for beginners, but its pretty good in the long run. Anyways, good luck with the next set of games. If you're going through them in order, 11 and 12 are incredibly difficult, not to mention the bad continue system on these games. Touhou 15 is the hardest in the series, but it has a game mode that uses a checkpoint system which makes it more accessible, but its still not easy. I'd recommend skipping them and play the other easier games. But if you want the challenge, better get all of the luck you'll need. Welcome to the world of Touhou Project. I wish you the best of luck. (This is a long comment, damn)
Thanks for leaving a comment! Reading through this i'd like to point out a few things -Firstly I had no idea there are multiple ways to do the prismriver sisters, I was aware that patchouli's spells depends on which character you chose, but I didn't know the prismriver fight could go in a completely different direction depending on who you damage. That's pretty neat and certainly adds a lot of flavor to the boss. -For IN, i mentioned this in a couple of my replies (obviously i don't oblige you to read through my entire comments section lol) but i have went through and beat stage 6b (albeit on an easy 1cc). Also i have no idea how i never connected kaguya's theme with lunatic doom machine as i tried beating that level in the past haha, but i am aware of touhou remixes being pretty prevalent in gd (like evw's subterranean animism obviously using the final boss theme of subterranean animism). -For PoFV when i was doing research about it i did find out that it was a remake of an older game, so that was pretty cool i guess. Honestly though, one of my biggest gripes with this game was the fact that you had to spam the shot key and it was tiring out my finger (nitpicky i know but hey what can i do about it, didn't include it in the video for a reason) Again thanks for leaving a comment and i hope reading through this reply cleared up a few things :)
I personally "only" 1ccd 6 through 10 on normal and I am on 11 right now (so not much farther than you) but one I thing I always loved about this series was seeing some seemingly completely impossible spellcard, just to see them slowly transform into actually dodgeable attacks. The puzzle aspect with some spells may actually be my favourite aspect of this series.
Well, you might have beaten the first 3 games, but actually not reaaally. See, to get the good ending and thus unlock the extra stage, you have to beat the game without using continues, this is called "1CC". In IN there even is another endboss when you do it like that. In 7 and 8 you can do 1CC on Easy, but in 6 you can only do it on Normal and higher. Extra Stage in Touhou 6 has a very popular boss with Music that you will certainly recognize, but I really recommend playing the other games first, before 1CCing EoSD, becaus it is one of the hardest games in the series. Btw, you don't have to replay the whole game to fight Eirin again. You can replay every stage you have beaten, by selecting it in Practice Mode. Also, you can emulate the first 5 games fairly easy. Dont ever try buying them. They don't actually run on Windows 98 but on a Japanese only Computer called "NEC PC-9800" (short: PC98). Additionally to that, there were just a few hundret copies sold of these early games and they are very expensive and hard to find nowadays. But in the end, the first 5 games are not important. They can be pretty fun, but they are not part of the windows storyline and didn't age well in some parts. Ok enough talk. Nobody will read this anyways haha. Goodnight! ^^
Touhou 6 one of the hardest games in the series? Where'd that come from? I mean it's hardest of the four that he played, but it's not even in the top 5 maybe
@@nutelu3462 You have to beat it on Normal to get 1CC Many Patterns are also based on randomness and the missing hitbox makes it even harder for beginners
@@jno7 well yeah, it isn't the easiest game, but I think it's a nice mix. Also, I think it's better to recommend a middle difficulty game as a first game, so they can get a good feel of what the difficulty of touhou games can really be.
This was really cool to see, it reminded me a lot of my first time playing Touhou. I would really love to see a follow up where you go for no-continue clears (1CC's), discussing how you conquered bosses and patterns that once gave you trouble. If you do end up coming back for more, I would recommend you use Thprac. This is tool that adds MUCH better practice options to the games, allowing you to skip to any boss pattern and start from different sections in each stage. By default, all the practice options the games you've played give you is the ability to choose a stage to retry (from the very beginning of said stage). Using Thprac is as easy as downloading, and then clicking on it while a Touhou game is running. Also, the first 5 games are much easier to play than you'd think. PC-98 emulators are very readily available, although it's still recommended you save these games for until after you're comfortable with the rest of the series.
I think for what you said, while watching this too. Let me note: EoSD is based on PC98 stuff. Ironically, the difficulty feels like our boi decided to somehow transfer those patterns and logic in certain cases. It is why you feel PCB is a bit easier. Also mechanics, you mentioned. Otherwise, from what I see, pretty good review. I will watch it fully and edit my response later. But yeah. I am glad you tried Touhou! Thank you for finding it fun and I am grateful for a person who got recently into it and was given such a good surprise.
Hell yea, always good to see a newcomer to Touhou. So much fun, honestly. It's gonna sound a little contrarian, but i particularly REALLY like POFV. It was also in my first 3 Touhou games, but MAN i loved the weirdly direct yet indirect competition that it employs between the sides (trust me it's SO much more fun if you have friends to play against). But i also just really liked the music, the character selection, all of it. All in all, your first experience with touhou feels like what a lot of people's was like(maybe except mine, where it was a lot more dying and not actually finishing a single game short of POFV), and I'm glad to hear you really enjoyed yourself! Welcome to the fold, dude!
All of this video was a shot through the heart of nostalgia. Especially the Perfect Cherry Blossom section, I've played that one more than anyone (My profile pick is Youmu for crying out loud, and has been for the last 15+ years... god I'm old). When you spoke of the Prismriver Sisters and the theme started playing in the background it reminded me when I put that song on my mp3 player (god I'm old) and would listen to it over and over again, with only occasionally changing to Sakuya, Flandre and Remilia's themes from EosD. Honestly, now I want to play them again, but I lost all the game files 2 computers ago.
It’s always nice seeing a new face in the 2hu community, especially their reactions to the difficulty(which is relatively easy for bullet hells and actually serves as great introductory games to the bullet hell genre, except LoLK because it’ll bloody slaughter new players l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶J̶u̶n̶k̶o̶’̶s̶ ̶S̶o̶n̶. Things to note though: The first five games are sorta non-canon(It’s complicated) and are known as the PC-98 games(the first of which isn’t even a bullet hell) and also if you want to play through every canon 2hu game be prepared for some fighting games and Marisa(the witch that sprays out a shit ton of stars and lasors) to reappear as an EX Boss, Stage 4’s don’t get easier either. I look foward to you Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom playthrough summary so I can laugh at your *misery* . Good Luck!
I'd actually argue LoLK is one of the better introductory games to the bullet hell genre. In Touhou you can generally horde your resources while other bullet hells usually have you to utilize all mechanics available in order to clear it. LoLK is an interesting case where it's actually super easy to 1cc if you bomb spam, but because it deviates some from the typical Touhou formula a lot of Touhou fans have difficulty with it. In other words, the patterns are harder but the resource generation is so high that it's easy as long as you use them, which is closer to a general bullet hell formula
@@annaairahala9462 When your response to a Bullet Hell Boss(Junko and evil incarna- Clownpiece) isn’t to learn their patterns but Cheese It, it’s too damn hard.
@@actuallyreallybored that's one of the things Touhou fans often get wrong about the genre, when it comes to other shmups, not everything is meant to be possible lnn or nmnb. That's what I meant by LoLK being a closer introductory to the genre than many of the other Touhou games because it has you rely more on your bombs than the other games to achieve the same difficulty
@@annaairahala9462 Well I haven’t really played other Bullet Hells, only watched them and promptly suffered from sensory overload(see Jaimers) so I can neither contest or confirm this. Well I still say LoLK is by far the hardest game bombless anyways.
IN is very weird. The time system is actually *much* easier to deal with on higher difficulties since you get time orbs as a youkai by grazing bullets during a boss. The number of bullets increases a lot more than the time requirements do. The absolute hardest limit to reach is stage 2 on normal. :P
You are so underrated it's crazy. This video and your other videos are so well made for a channel this scale. Hope you will get more reognition in the future
Funny how my father has found the Touhou bullet hell games to be fairly challenging and forgiving like the good old TMNT beat 'em ups and Super Mario World when trying these for first time. Heck, he even has considered lunatic to be the Donkey Kong Country difficulty equivalent. Yeah, he has taken interest in playing these because he has mistaken these for flash games and that he was a fan of playing shoot 'em ups.
Youmu's attacks are seriously fun. I've only played PCB, but she's my favorite or of the bosses I've beaten (it was quite a while ago that I played it, so I don't recall much).
For those new to Touhou, Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom is considered a much better starting point than Touhou 6. This does not mean skip 6, just get to it when your skills are more honed. 6 is also a bit clunky, I don't think you can see your hit box in focus mode on it w/o using the community mod.
So yeah, it was really enjoyable to watch ya playthrough those games, but two things: 1. Touhou 8, as well as anything after 6, has a practice mode where you actually can fight the boss without having to do the whole game all over again 2. Was it too easy? I might break your mind, but people in the community consider beating a game when you use... *no continues.* Good luck!
Wow a blind Touhou playthrough? In 2022?? And with underrated editing?! Wow, I just hit the jackpot dude! (Also I've only played EoSD and not any other touhou game, but seeing this video has made me want to immediately go to PCB despite not unlocking the Extra Stage yet.)
It can be nice to dedicate your time to beating each game before moving on, but I'd recommend downloading a bunch of them and just trying each of them out. It'll give you a better taste of the variety of patterns that Touhou has to offer, and can help avoid frustration from getting stuck on one game.
@@-butterfly-594 You know what? I'll definitely consider it. I just got done playing PCB yesterday and I had an absolute BLAST, so I'll take your word for it and try out a whole bunch of the other games soon.
Great video! You’ve earned a sub from me! There is one aspect of the mechanics in Imperishable Night that I think you missed. That would’ve made your experience much better. That would be the slaves. I’ll explain. I’m sure you noticed that most bigger enemies and bosses attack using little white orbs that obit around them. (Every time a slave appears on screen, you hear a unique sound effect too) Those are called slaves, and understanding how you can use them to your advantage gives you the best way to rack up time orbs during the stages. So enemy slaves can only be damaged by the human, while the youkai’s shots will pass through them. If you kill an enemy that still has at least one slave still alive, that enemy along with the slave will give you a nice bonus of time orbs. And the more slaves an enemy has when killed, the more time orbs you will be rewarded. On top of that, when an enemy with slaves is killed, there will be a small blue explosion. Any bullets caught inside that explosion will also be converted into time orbs. The main take away is, during stages, don’t try to rack up time by simply being in human form. Try to effectively kill bigger enemies in the most lucrative way possible. So how this works in practice is, when you see a bigger enemy with slaves appear, try to only shoot them down in youkai form, because their attacks will go through the slaves and only damage the enemy directly. I like this mechanic because it’s a nice risk reward decision. Do I avoid the slaves and shoot the enemy in youkai form for maximum time reward, or do I destroy some of the slaves in human form to reduce the amount of bullets I need to dodge? Having learned this makes Imperishable Night my favorite of those first three windows games. It’s super satisfying to pull of a perfect stage and end up with more than the required time amount before the boss even shows up.
Speaking of IN, there are actually also two stage 4 bosses. The Stage 4 boss you face is based on which team you picked. If you are the Border of Illusion (Reimu & Yukari) or Netherworld Dwellers (Youmu & Yuyuko), you'll face Marisa, and if you're Aria of Forbidden Magic (Marisa & Alice) or Visionary Scarlet Devil (Sakuya & Remilia), you'll face Reimu.
about the time mechanics in Imperishable Night using bombs and dying reduces the amount of time points you have. in turn, if you capture a spellcard (not using bombs and not dying) you gain a massive amount of time points. for the first 2 stages, you need to capture all of the spellcards to have enough time points, but after that, they give you more than enough time points as long as you dont spam bombs and die. also IN is just FNAF lol
Actually for the first game, it’s on the pc-98, which is a completely different species of computer, but it’s “easily” emulatable. Though the game hasn’t aged too well and is completely different from the touhou you know.
Reminds me of a game called blazing star! It's been more than a decade since I last played it but I can still vividly remember that, "Bonus" in that cheesy voice.
Oh this is sure nostalgic I remember of my first Luna (it was EoSD) and i felt so proud of myself cuz i did something so hard. And then Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom was released and Normal Mode was legit harder than Luna EoSD (DANM YOU CLOWNPIECE!). Good Luck on you journey and remember: JUST PICK REISEN ON LoLK
Helloo! Finally a "first time playing" that isn't scuffed or from years ago! Imma be commentating along as I watch the video so u'll just get a sort of reply for everything noteworthy that u said! U can get emulators for the PC-98 but u did the right thing by starting with the Windows era :D Starting with Touhou 6, I wanna comment on a couple of things. I recently had to "explain" Touhou to a friend of mine and let her start to play it. Also since I was seeing her struggle thru each boss at easy modo, I built up some courage and finally beat EOSD in Normal mode (1CC) so the pain u describe.. is so relatable ahaha! I dunno if u had any idea but there's quite some stuff u could download if u want EoSD to: look better, have a hitbox on ur chara when focusing, and also a Vpatch (but u prob had it cuz I don't see ur EoSD going at 9000x speed ahaha ) I think Patchy is easy once u figure out the re-directing thing. (basically it's kinda like streaming (=moving slowly) to one side and then jump to the actual side and then re-stream to the opposite side so that the homing bullets go where u were before and u can re-enter the danmaku thru a small gap u created by moving rlly quickly ) Redirecting and re-streaming are not the same thing but are connected. Yeah, Stage 5 bosses are the hardest, cuz u actually have to learn them without using too many bombs so that u can get to the final boss with resources. Final bosses are usually a bomb-fiesta x) PCB is much easier cuz the cherry mechanic give u shit ton of points, giving u more lifes and overall resources (also cuz u just POC when in cherry mode) The mechanics of IN can be frustrating yeah but it's no big deal, the more u play the more u'll be able to get better at managing it. Also HEY- I THINK U FORGOT TO MENTION THE OTHER FINAL BOSS (unless you don't know there's another final boss... in which case.. haha.. might wanna get back to it and do a Run on the B route ;D ) The Phatasmagoria games ( Touhou 3 and 9) can be weird at first but I think they can be fun once u get the hang of it. I don't usually play it but I think if Zun made a new Phatasmagoria in the future, ppl would go crazy on it. I think it's one of those games that u hate UNTIL you look back and say "damn, I wish I had THAT game again!" I think that's also the general opinion of the P. games in the community. Welp, glady ou enjoyed Touhou (even my friend wasn't really hooked on the idea but after some runs she started to see the "beauty" of Touhou. Soon enough (hopefully tomorrow.. idk) she'll try PCB for the first time so I'm hyped! I hope you'll do more and also check out the fighting games AND some fangames (I'd recommend some of them but I don't have much knowledge.. or should I say.. PATCHOULI KNOWLEDGE (HA! I'm funny- ... g-guys? ..where are u going?... guys???) ... Anyway.. EVEN tho I don't know many.. BRO.. u HAVE to check out the "Fantastic Danmaku Festival" fangames! They're chinese but they're like.. "remakes" of the Windows era ones. For now there's the one for Touhou 6 and 7 and LEMME FUCKIN TELL YOU- THEY LOOK STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL! Not only visually but also musically and gameplay wise.. the patterns are something else.. I'm SOO waiting for the Touhou 8 one.. Q_Q .. so yeah.. check them out! They on steam too if u wanna legally buy them! ;D They're worth 100% of everything u spend on them. (They're pretty cheap anyway..) Good luck in your 2HU adventure ;D (also sorry for this long ass text...I apologize....)
Hey! first off super glad you enjoyed my ramblings about this game lol. Read through your entire comment and i'd like to reply with a few things (if you don't mind) -For EoSD i actually did not have a vsync patch on. i actually had no idea that was a thing until after i recorded everything and was surprised at how smoothly my game ran even when recording at 1080p 60fps with obs. Also as of right now, i've already installed the hitbox patch so no need to worry about that. -For IN, i've played it a few more times and the time orbs already feel significantly less frustrating to me. Also yes, i'm aware of the other final boss and i actually 1ccd the game on easy (cute i know) off camera and unlocked the extra stage. -Fan games have been a thing i've been thinking about doing after i cover all the official games. so don't sweat, i'll be playing a bunch of those in the future if i ever have a chance. again, glad you enjoyed and feel free to hit me up on discord if you have anything else you'd like to tell me, my dms are open :)
@@SlxxplessNights Oh wow, relatively fast reply! I wasn't expecting it ahah :D Yeah.. EoSD looks like a very good game once u get the retexture patch and the hitbox patch ahah For V-patch.. well. I usually play windowed and use a 1500 x 1000 res thanks to the vpatch.ini file, so I don't need to go fullscreen haha OH glad u found out of the other boss for IN then :D And don't worry, I'm an Easy Modo player myself (altho I had to 1CC EoSD at normal cuz I wanted the extra stage + it was my first Touhou game I ever tried back when I was in middle school or something like that, so I was like: Aight this is the day I try forreal.. I ACTUALLY RECORDED THE REPLAY AND UPLOADED IT ON MY CHANNEL, so u can kinda see how I do Patchy if u want xD ) but yeah.. I'm an easy modo player myself cuz I don't dedicate myself too much to these games. I like to play them casually but I'm always trying to get better at it.. slowly. So yeah.. don't be afraid of ur 1CC easy. These games are hard af, so I think even ppl who meme on the "easy modo", do think it's still fine. memes are to be left as memes :P YEEEESSS FANGAMESSSS AFTER! LESS GOOOOOOOOOO!!! \^O^/ Uhh if u don't mind having someone bugging you about (our Lord and Saviour) Touhou then sure I'll add ya ;D
Fun fact: The Empress of Light in Terraria was inspired bullet hells, specifically (As said by a developer) Touhou Also, the Calamity mod makes quite a few Touhou references
Nice video! My first 2hu was PoFV, and I found it really fascinating the first time to have a PvP-style bullet hell, while also discovering a few quirks about it: Yes, you have to spam Z to use regular attack while holding it consumes your charges, leaving you with the level 1 charge attack you can do; Pressing the bomb button (X) uses all your charges instantly, and you can't use the charge attack until you regenerate it; A level 4 charge clears your entire screen while summoning you as a boss to the enemy side; If your boss is on the enemy side already and you do a level 4 charge, it only uses 3 charges if you press X; At certain point combos (aka you keep popping bullets without the timer on the top left running out), respectively 100k, 300k and 500k, you automatically summon your boss to the enemy side without it clearing your screen; A boss summon to the enemy side cancels your own, but doesn't drop anything if cancelled; Medicine Melancholy is both my favorite character and a huge pain in the ass... I 1cc'd hard difficulty without any problems, first try. As you said, enemies are scripted to survive for a while, and afterwards die in a dumb way... This is best seen in the Extra difficulty, which is basically a sudden-death style of the game; And lastly, it's so fun to just see everything score up constantly. It might be only my comment but lives are what you usually see when the screen resets in a way, even if not entirely. This is what you referred to as "HP". The only place where HP could be actually well used as a term is in PoFV, the 5 orbs at the top of the screen. Those on the left side, or the right side in other games next to "Player" are lives. At least to me, this is a much easier way to grasp it all. Good luck out there!
Your channel literally has a few of my favorite games like hollow knight, enter the gungeon, Danganronpa and now touhou, I'm excited to see more touhou content, that was pretty fun to watch
After finishing the video i was surprised to see how few subscribers you had, considering how good the editing and the video was Congrats on beating the games with so little attempts btw
If your really interested in playing the PC-98 games there are emulators that run it pretty well, though, in my opinion, the PC-98 games are more jank than EOSD since you miss out on tons of quality of life features in the newer games.
I'd love to see you take a chance at delving more deeply into the touhou universe, what with the challenge of getting to 1cc and facing the secret bosses, learning of the stories of the games and the lore of the character and everything else that's beyond the surface you just barely scraped yet. Touhou is an amazing series with so much to offer in every field you can think of.
Usually you are considered to have completed a Touhou game when you manage to 1cc (no continues) it in normal or higher as doing so also unlocks the hidden extra stages, the only exception is Imperishable Night that unlocks the extra stage even if you use continues. Going for 1cc is not an easy task and takes a lot of practice if you don't have experience in this kind of games but it really gets a lot easier the more you play. It took me a month to 1cc EoSD then less than a week for each of the others. PCB is the only game in the whole series to have not only an extra level but also a "Phantasm" level. To unlock it you have to beat a certain number of different spellcards without being hit and without using a bomb. Imperishable Night is my fav and has a different final boss if you play the game a second time with the same characters you already completed it with. The 4th level boss also changes between Reimu and Marisa depending on which characters you selected. You also can unlock the ability to play with all 8 characters individually instead of using them as teams but to do so you have to beat both final bosses with all four teams.
well that was a treat to watch. As someone that played these games for 2 years at this point it is really intresting to see a new touhou player. It is unreal how many times i said to myself "yeah i used to think like that" during this video and i really want to see your opinions of the next few games specifeclly 11, 12, 14, 15, 18 also idk if you are planing on playing some of the the fighting games and spin-offs but they are just as good as the main game. note: if you are ever planing on going back to games and try to 1cc them (aka beat them without using a continue) somthing in touhou 08 might change ;)
Tiny tip for dodging shots aimed at you: If you move as slowly as possible, you can keep the bullets in a fairly contained stream that helps to manage the other parts of the attack. This tactic is called "streaming."
Note for PCB: You can also detonate the border manually by pressing the bomb button, which turns all bullets on screen into small cherry items(The pink items).
I reccommend going for 1cc (1 continue clear) in the games you played, it really makes you learn the patterns and improve your skill and is a ton of fun in my opinion. You also should try replaying IN because there is a second final boss. I'm glad you like the games so far! Touhou 11 is my favorite so I look forward to you ever playing that if you plan to.
Watching this video reminded me a lot of how I was when I first started playing Touhou. It's nice to see the beginnings again and I'm interested in how far you're willing to go through with the games. People have basically said anything I'd want to so all I can say is good luck and have fun.
Just a detail that some others have touched on: The 4th boss in several Touhou games varies depending on which character you choose. Patchouli will have different spell cards depending on your character and bullet type. The prismriver sisters will have you fighting a different one of them during the first portion of the fight, and their patterns are pretty different, which explains the hard time you had against the one you picked. In Imperishable Night, you face either Reimu or Marisa as 4th. Not sure if you noticed, but they're both playable characters, and the protagonists for most of the series. I personally like this particular fight, as it puts you on the receiving end of Reimu's more controlling patterns or Marisa's brute force barrages (Wait, so this is what I'd been doing to those fairies?)
I really enjoyed this video! It's nice to see a detailed look at your first time playing these games, and I'm glad you seem to be enjoying them! I just wanted to recommend that you watch gameplay from other players too! It can be downright frustrating to get stuck on some patterns, so it's helpful to see how other people deal with them. There's a UA-camr called MegaManOmega who has cleared every mainline game so far, and his let's plays also come with commentary on how to beat the games. Those videos really helped me get through the more difficult games without just bashing my head against them lol. If you want to see some really advanced gameplay there's also a world-wide tournament going on right now called Touhou World Cup! Each match players get a set amount of time to play through a certain game and try to get as few deaths or the highest score possible. I'd recommend checking them out on UA-cam as well, it's super fun to watch insanely skilled players make the toughest mode look easy!
Oh my god! I've beaten cuphead on phone, I made DOOM eternal on ps4, I P ranked all ultrakill levels on brutal diff in PC, Did undertale on phone And EVEN have 20 demons on geometry dash. But DAMN! I CAN'T WIN ANY TOUHOU GAMES ON NORMAL DIFFICULTY!
in imperishable night, there are sometimes "slave" enemies circling the "masters" if you shoot these in human mode they will just die but if you kill the master in youkai mode they will drop lots of time orbs if you pay attention to when to focus and when to unfocus getting the time requirement is trivial
I do agree that Touhou 7 is a bit easier than Touhou 6, Touhou 7 was also the first Touhou game I've ever beaten (Albeit, I got the bad ending, and have yet to get the 1cc good ending). I also have yet to beat Touhou 6 lol. Also, you're not alone when it comes to you finding Touhou 7's 4th stage hard. I also struggle with it immensely, and personally, I have a harder time with it than I do stages 5 and 6. I can go a whole run without losing a single try and half my lives on normal mode, hit stage 4, and then proceed to lose 2-3 of my tries. I'm just glad that I'm not the only one with this problem, and that I'm not crazy lol.
The Touhou 9 AI is just nuts. I'd recommend putting two Lunatic AIs against each other to experience absolute insanity. they are literally able to go through any wall they want
A few fun facts about Imperishable Night: There is a second stage 6 to choose from. In order to get there you have to clear Final A against Eirin (which you did) and you gave to be on 1CC pace for the Final B run. Also if you clear Final A and B for all 4 teams, you unlock solo shot types. Imperishable Night is definitely one of my favorites in the series just because of how much content there is to play, as well as having some of the more interesting mechanics I have seen throughout the series. (It’s my second favorite, second only to Phantasmagoria of Flower View ofc lmao) PoFV is definitely different from the other games, and I hated it too when I first played it. But once you start to really understand everything that’s going on under the hood, all the basic mechanics and some of the more discreet mechanics, it starts to become VERY fun to play. So much so that it instantly became my favorite game in the entire series. It was even my first game that I beat on Lunatic difficulty. Great video overall, would definitely love to see you play the rest of the games!
The best thing I can recommend going forward is to try not to be "tryhardy" with the Touhou games, also it's helpful to only process things that are remotely close to your character after learning how the bosses pattern works, since most patterns you see, while beautiful and chaotic, are actually fairly simple when you realize the only harmful things are the things actually coming your way and not existing by the wayside Also expect Touhou 11 to give a decent spike in challenge, stage 3 and 5 feel like the most challenging but stage 1 and 6 ironically feel the easiest, excluding the boss fight in 6, also please for the love of all that is Touhou... Pay attention to the Music flow in stage 6 and the way it blends with the action, it's beautiful, absolutely beautiful
I love watching people get into these games and hearing their toughs,my favorite is 15 because grazing is really fun and it feels like a kaizo romhack in terms of level design.
0:42 technically it is, but there's a special term for these games instead: *bullet heaven* 1:22 you're not the only one to confuse Windows 98 and PC-9801, Japanese computers of the time, emulators of PC-9801 exist out there on the internet fyi
I was a little disappointed to not see you touch the Extra Stage for any of the games I'd heavily suggest it, as they're more bite-sized experiences that allow for practicing more easily and readily than if you wanted to beat the game on Lunatic. Extra Mode unlock requirements differ for a couple games but generally can be unlocked by beating the game on Normal or higher without any continues (and with how fast you seemingly picked up on the games, I think you'd be able to do it pretty easily! [With these entries, at least, maybe not with a couple later, more infamously difficult-on-Normal games])
congrats clear the main story! but it is the time to complete without using any continues in any difficulty (some are easy exclusive) to unlock the EX stage
Got started on touhou 7 a few days ago. After 4 attempts on botg normal and easy, I managed to get 99% of it done. Then my dumbass finaly figured out giw to focus the movement and finaly got to the end. Only for the game to basically tell me "All you did was get Sakuya's clothes dirty! No continues, bitch!" 10/10 time to get good
Human shots make most of IN harder, actually. Human shots get blocked by spirits so that's more hp to whittle down. Using a youkai on IN is really good, since the spirits that circle enemies can clear bullets if you use a youkai, meaning that you clear most of the projectiles on screen and gain significant time from the spirits, making it much easier on yourself. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the games There's still a whole world to fall into
I realize now after watching this video that Touhou rewired my brain into the ultimate dodge machine when I watched you talk about stage four while I was searching for the dodge spots in the middle
1:26 Sorry if I missed this, but the PC-98 games do NOT run only on Windows 98. In fact, Windows has nothing to do with it. PC-98 is the PC 9800 series of japanese PCs. You can emulate them pretty well on Windows, but legally... I think copies sell for 4 digits at least? And they're on... floppy disks or similar? So yeah, emulating them is the only realistic way to play them. Which is easy. And I definitely recommend. Cause they're REALLY fun. At least 2,4 and 5. 1 and 3 depend on your tastes.
Edit 1: (2:45) Yup... stage 4 is quite the spike, threw me off too (cause PC-98 games have a much smoother curve) So I totally feel you. I played EoSD after 1-5, so I also started on hard and got dumpstered by Cirno lol. On my first normal run I made it to Stage 4 without losing a single life or bomb... and game overed to Patchy... x3
5:43 Fun fact: If you beat the game in 1cc (1 coin clear, aka no continues) you unlock the extra stage... a single stage nearly as long as the actual game. With 80% being the extra boss. Which is difficult. Took me about 1 month to 1cc EoSD, and 1 month after that to beat the extra stage.
13:55 Fun fact: You didn't actually beat the final boss... Eirin is only the right hand... but you need to rebeat the game for the actual final boss, which is kinda annoying I guess...
Oh no oh no oh no, he thinks beating the game is using continues. xD well I got some bad news but the comments beat me to it. Even as a new player I knew continues were cheap and op. I also knew that I got a "bad ending" when I used them. Their mainly just there to practice(or unlock practice) later stages.
@@lasatar6428 Lunatic yes, but hard is debatable and depends on the game. If we're just talking about the bosses alone, Flandre is harder than Remilia on Hard
The thing about Patchouli is that she set a tradition for a somewhat personalized stage 4 boss: she has so many spell cards that she selects a specific set based on your own character setup, with the overall aim of pushing you away from your preferred firing positions. (Also, since you stopped after stage 6 you still haven't seen Patchouli's best ones in that game - you're just an annoyance to her, and there are actual potential problems she needs to save her magic for.) Some of Sakuya's moves are easier to dodge than you're assuming because they respond differently to your own movement patterns than you'd expect. That said, Remilia is fairer. More brutal, but fairer. Especially hard to comment on Perfect Cherry Blossom because stopping after Yuyuko meant you missed a larger portion of that game than usual, and while the missing portion mostly has an impact on story I feel it also serves as a sort of commentary on the game's design as a whole. Although I'd say some of your problem with the Prismriver sisters (another stage 4 boss who partially tailors their attack to your own setup) and Yuyuko is the same as with Sakuya: you're hyperfocused on your character's immediate vicinity and thus missing moments you should commit to a broad unfocused dodge - or outright staying still. (I make the same mistake there a lot.) Imperishable Night I mostly like for the plot; there are so many playable teams that you get a lot of different perspectives on what's going on, and two of the parties involved have a great deal of past experience with that sort of thing even if they don't feel like sharing more than hints.
I always like seeing people playing this for the first time! I like almost everything about the game! except the fact that Zun is still learning to draw... Now complete the extras! (Note: there is a patch that will show your hitbox and the real hitbox of bullets in th6, it is really helpful) My favorite games are EoSD, LoLK (considerated the hardest one, play it with a crappy computer if you want to win) and WBaWC (but UM is actually getting there, messing with the cards is so fun!). Honorable mentions: DDC, PoFV (I like that you can play with a buddy). But those are just main line, the other ones are the fighting games: AoCF, SWR/Hisoutensoku (+modded Soku 2) and I would say 17.5 but I haven't played it yet. It does have Flandre as a playable character though.
Really impressed with the quality of the video, it was extremely fun to watch and I would've expected way more subscribers. It's also really cool to hear thoughts from the perspective of a new player and being able to relate to a lot of them when I think back to my first weeks of playing Touhou.. ^^ Recognizing multiple themes because of other games like Geometry dash/osu was also one thing I absolutely loved when getting into Touhou.
1:23 is not even windows-98, it's a specific kind of computer called PC-98. One thing to to take into account is that by using continues, you are getting the "bad endings" of these games.
I'd argue that I like Touhou 9 the most, but that's because back then I always played it with my brothers split screen. Also Twinkle Star Sprites was my favorite childhood game so Touhou 9 just hit different.
Normal mode isn't considered shameful. It's when you play on easy mode that it starts to be considered shameful. Also, you likely only got bad endings in your victories. To get good endings, you have to beat these games without using a single continue.
I originally considered Touhou 9 to be one of my lesser favorites but after playing more and more of the series it quickly became my personal #2 (behind IN of course). Knowing when to counter with a low charge spell, when to go aggressive and send a higher charge or combos, and at what points the score count would automatically summon a free charge 4 spellcard (100k 300k 500k) completely changing the momentum if done correctly. Do I play safe and keep hitting 100k and reset, do I play hyper risky and stay maxed at 999999 the whole time... And the best part if I had to pick is that yes there's patterns but it's always so chaotic at really high difficulties that surviving and winning just feels amazing.
It's pretty interesting seeing the perspective of a new 2hu player. Especially when you say a pattern is "impossible" when it's "pretty easy" to "not that bad" and I can guarantee that you'll be able to think the same thing given enough practice.
important thing about the practice:
the best way is to not blindly try the pattern but try to *see* the behaviour of bullets, which often can be done only by looking at the whole thing

PC-98 isn't the same thing as Windows 98.
The first 5 Touhou games were released on a japanese home computer called a PC-98.
It's pretty easy to emulate nowadays.
Nice to see more people posting videos of their first experiences with Touhou, though.
Oh and Phantasmagoria of Flower View is meant more for multiplayer versus matches than single player.
Yeah, what a BABY. There are PC 98 Emulators even for android phones.
She has a passive ability that when anybody looks into her eyes they go mad instantly (kinda like clownpiece's torch from LoLK)
Btw in IN you missed a route, after beating Eirin without continues you can do the game again and fight another last boss, which is the true last one
PoFV's IA is indeed scripted and a bit cheating, Shiki Eiki won't take damage unless you survive one or two minutes

What I believe some people don't realize when first playing touhou is that the playable character you choose can affect bosses. Like in 8, choosing Reimu will have Marisa as a boss, and vice versa; in 6, Patchouli's spell cards change depending on who you choose
I believe shot type choice also affects Patchouli's spell cards.

Yep , IN is the easiest in normal
Hard is harder then 6 and 7 , god Marisa is such a mean boss, reisen's a bit easier tho
Wait, really? It took me weeks of attempts to do IN, I just found kaguya really hard especially, but I could beat PCB and EoSD in only like half the time.

@@annaairahala9462 Last spell makes a normal 1cc much easier for a new player
@@Megalopros Touhou 7 is actually the most recommended Touhou for memory training, so yeah, its training for you eyes, brain and muscular movement
Pretty sure it's her corpse that's sealed in the tree.

Oh yeah, one last thing. Cool seeing you here too
Slight innacuracy , if you press bomb during the death bomb window, you do a normal bomb(that cost 1) If you press it a bit later you do a last spell
You can deathbomb from LLS onward.

Jun'ya Ōta, the creator of Touhou Project, must beat his own bullet patterns without losing a life or use a bomb with controller (I don't know if he is still using controller or not), that is nuts.
As nuts as GeoDash level creator with their demon level.
that's pretty interesting, good to know the creator is just as insane as i thought he was
that is straight up a lie
quite numerous patterns are randomised in the games, take the most recent game as example: stage 4 yellow spam section
there's no way he went to beat this pattern without using anything, what's more likely is that he designed it they way it is to practically force you to use the resources you have
he doesn't need to beat his own creation w/o anything, this isn't some geometry dash level he created
@@UndefinedFantasticCat And quite numerous patterns are constant, he try to beat his own patterns with less resource as possible or not using at all
@@HyperVanilo there are hints in the last 2 games that show ZUN's stand on the clears
he values the "No-Miss" clears the most, despite the community valuing the NN(N(N)) runs
example I gave is what's considered literal "cancer pattern" for the LNNN by the community
Hehe funny wysi number
@@AlfonsoNigeriaWYSI lol😂
quite nice video, though there's one particular mistake:
NEC PC-98 doesn't mean Windows 98 (though it can be installed there)
it can be emulated quite easily actually, far less resource-consuming than a Windows 2000 VM
also, Touhou games are usually easier when memorized and learned - here's the list of reasons why memorizing and figuring out things works better than pure dodging (though pure dodging is fun):
-Patchouli uses different spellcards depending on which shottype you have. you had the worst shottype and the worst spellcards. (homing Reimu is barely ever good)
-the laser attack is easy if you know what to do - misdirect bullets into a direction away from where the lasers will appear, and repeat that over and over. i haven't played EoSD in a while, but i think that's how you do it.
-also, you get to choose which Prismriver you battle in Stage 4 - first, it depends on choice of player character, then it depends on who you focus on defeating during their first concert spellcard.
whoever told you they're the easiest Stage 4 boss is wrong, unless they're talking about particularly skilled play, in which case i can't tell you because i don't know which are easier to beat on such level, but on just a casual run or on 1cc's, they are a pain both on Normal and Hard compared to some others
-PCB Sakuya is also pretty much the best character to play as when you're a new player, so there's that.
@@pandakekok7319

I think a big part of what makes bullet hells “hard” for most players is just that most players don’t actually have any experience with the genre. Mario would be hard for you too if you waited until your teens or adult years to play platformers for the first time!
The analogy doesn't work here as you intended it to, but you have a point.
its usuallt because the new players focus on all of the screen and panic by starting to move too much
bullet hells usuallt require a lot of memorization and focusing on the area where you know bullets are gonna come from and touch you in a 1 second timewindow from now, both really hard skills to master

I also hope you'll actually *complete* one of them with a 1CC. It's important for the good endings and most importantly for unlocking the extra stage and boss.
12.8 is so fucking hard, literally the only Touhou I cannot 1cc lol
Good job clearing your first touhou games. It would be interesting to see you play the other games next. Mountain of Faith (Touhou 10) will be interesting, considering how the continue system works and the power-bomb system. Its pretty easy and forgiving if you know how to use your bombs properly -and infinitely easier if you use the marisa b 3 power glitch lol.-
That being said, there are more to these games, which are the extra stages, but they can only be unlocked if you beat the game without using continues.
Reading through this i'd like to point out a few things
-Firstly I had no idea there are multiple ways to do the prismriver sisters, I was aware that patchouli's spells depends on which character you chose, but I didn't know the prismriver fight could go in a completely different direction depending on who you damage.
Honestly though, one of my biggest gripes with this game was the fact that you had to spam the shot key and it was tiring out my finger (nitpicky i know but hey what can i do about it, didn't include it in the video for a reason)
Again thanks for leaving a comment and i hope reading through this reply cleared up a few things :)
I mean it's hardest of the four that he played, but it's not even in the top 5
maybe
@@nutelu3462 You have to beat it on Normal to get 1CC
Many Patterns are also based on randomness and the missing hitbox makes it even harder for beginners
@@jno7 well yeah, it isn't the easiest game, but I think it's a nice mix. Also, I think it's better to recommend a middle difficulty game as a first game, so they can get a good feel of what the difficulty of touhou games can really be.
6:12 it's actually a Pickup magnet barrier that grabs all the items in the screen, however it disappears when you get hit.
Let me note:
EoSD is based on PC98 stuff.
Honestly, now I want to play them again, but I lost all the game files 2 computers ago.
you should play Subterranean Animism, Double Dealing Character, and Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom :> those are the best ones imo
When you are fighting the prismriver sisters try picking on lunasa as much as possible since she's the easiest to fight after their first spellcard
Hard mode perks?
Seems like touhou is a good boost for your channel. Will definitely look forward to you playing up to the latest game!
I started with 6 and imo is the easiest
So yeah, it was really enjoyable to watch ya playthrough those games, but two things:
1. Touhou 8, as well as anything after 6, has a practice mode where you actually can fight the boss without having to do the whole game all over again
2. Was it too easy? I might break your mind, but people in the community consider beating a game when you use... *no continues.* Good luck!
tbh I didn't know it was possible to have never played a Bullet Hell
Wow a blind Touhou playthrough?
In 2022??
And with underrated editing?!
Wow, I just hit the jackpot dude! (Also I've only played EoSD and not any other touhou game, but seeing this video has made me want to immediately go to PCB despite not unlocking the Extra Stage yet.)
I’d recommend PCB. It’s crazy fun and the soundtrack slaps.
I watched in my tv which is un signed in you are underrated very underrated your editting is good but you are udnerrated
thanks so much! glad you enjoyed :)
It’s super satisfying to pull of a perfect stage and end up with more than the required time amount before the boss even shows up.
that seems pretty helpful! thanks i'll be keeping that in mind for future runs
@@Hyperneosonic97 reimu & yukari*
marisa won't fight herself, will she?
@@speaker6532 You saw nothing. There is no typo. /jk
about the time mechanics in Imperishable Night
using bombs and dying reduces the amount of time points you have. in turn, if you capture a spellcard (not using bombs and not dying) you gain a massive amount of time points. for the first 2 stages, you need to capture all of the spellcards to have enough time points, but after that, they give you more than enough time points as long as you dont spam bombs and die.
also IN is just FNAF lol
Actually for the first game, it’s on the pc-98, which is a completely different species of computer, but it’s “easily” emulatable. Though the game hasn’t aged too well and is completely different from the touhou you know.
You could call Touhou the Dark Souls of bullet hells, but actually Dark Souls is the Touhou of Soulslikes.
Reminds me of a game called blazing star! It's been more than a decade since I last played it but I can still vividly remember that, "Bonus" in that cheesy voice.
Oh this is sure nostalgic
I remember of my first Luna (it was EoSD) and i felt so proud of myself cuz i did something so hard.
U can get emulators for the PC-98 but u did the right thing by starting with the Windows era :D
Starting with Touhou 6, I wanna comment on a couple of things.
I recently had to "explain" Touhou to a friend of mine and let her start to play it.
Also since I was seeing her struggle thru each boss at easy modo, I built up some courage and finally beat EOSD in Normal mode (1CC) so the pain u describe.. is so relatable ahaha!
I dunno if u had any idea but there's quite some stuff u could download if u want EoSD to: look better, have a hitbox on ur chara when focusing, and also a Vpatch (but u prob had it cuz I don't see ur EoSD going at 9000x speed ahaha )
I think Patchy is easy once u figure out the re-directing thing. (basically it's kinda like streaming (=moving slowly) to one side and then jump to the actual side and then re-stream to the opposite side so that the homing bullets go where u were before and u can re-enter the danmaku thru a small gap u created by moving rlly quickly )
Redirecting and re-streaming are not the same thing but are connected.
Yeah, Stage 5 bosses are the hardest, cuz u actually have to learn them without using too many bombs so that u can get to the final boss with resources. Final bosses are usually a bomb-fiesta x)
PCB is much easier cuz the cherry mechanic give u shit ton of points, giving u more lifes and overall resources (also cuz u just POC when in cherry mode)
The mechanics of IN can be frustrating yeah but it's no big deal, the more u play the more u'll be able to get better at managing it.
Also HEY- I THINK U FORGOT TO MENTION THE OTHER FINAL BOSS (unless you don't know there's another final boss... in which case.. haha.. might wanna get back to it and do a Run on the B route ;D )
The Phatasmagoria games ( Touhou 3 and 9) can be weird at first but I think they can be fun once u get the hang of it. I don't usually play it but I think if Zun made a new Phatasmagoria in the future, ppl would go crazy on it. I think it's one of those games that u hate UNTIL you look back and say "damn, I wish I had THAT game again!"
I think that's also the general opinion of the P. games in the community.
(They're pretty cheap anyway..)
Good luck in your 2HU adventure ;D (also sorry for this long ass text...I apologize....)
Hey! first off super glad you enjoyed my ramblings about this game lol. Read through your entire comment and i'd like to reply with a few things (if you don't mind)
-For EoSD i actually did not have a vsync patch on. i actually had no idea that was a thing until after i recorded everything and was surprised at how smoothly my game ran even when recording at 1080p 60fps with obs.
I wasn't expecting it ahah :D
Yeah.. EoSD looks like a very good game once u get the retexture patch and the hitbox patch ahah
For V-patch.. well. I usually play windowed and use a 1500 x 1000 res thanks to the vpatch.ini file, so I don't need to go fullscreen haha
OH glad u found out of the other boss for IN then :D
And don't worry, I'm an Easy Modo player myself (altho I had to 1CC EoSD at normal cuz I wanted the extra stage + it was my first Touhou game I ever tried back when I was in middle school or something like that, so I was like: Aight this is the day I try forreal.. These games are hard af, so I think even ppl who meme on the "easy modo", do think it's still fine. memes are to be left as memes :P
YEEEESSS FANGAMESSSS AFTER! LESS GOOOOOOOOOO!!! \^O^/
Uhh if u don't mind having someone bugging you about (our Lord and Saviour) Touhou then sure I'll add ya ;D
Fun fact: The Empress of Light in Terraria was inspired bullet hells, specifically (As said by a developer) Touhou
Also, the Calamity mod makes quite a few Touhou references
Nice video! My first 2hu was PoFV, and I found it really fascinating the first time to have a PvP-style bullet hell, while also discovering a few quirks about it:
Yes, you have to spam Z to use regular attack while holding it consumes your charges, leaving you with the level 1 charge attack you can do;
Pressing the bomb button (X) uses all your charges instantly, and you can't use the charge attack until you regenerate it;
A level 4 charge clears your entire screen while summoning you as a boss to the enemy side;
If your boss is on the enemy side already and you do a level 4 charge, it only uses 3 charges if you press X;
At certain point combos (aka you keep popping bullets without the timer on the top left running out), respectively 100k, 300k and 500k, you automatically summon your boss to the enemy side without it clearing your screen;
A boss summon to the enemy side cancels your own, but doesn't drop anything if cancelled;
Medicine Melancholy is both my favorite character and a huge pain in the ass... I 1cc'd hard difficulty without any problems, first try.
As you said, enemies are scripted to survive for a while, and afterwards die in a dumb way... This is best seen in the Extra difficulty, which is basically a sudden-death style of the game;
And lastly, it's so fun to just see everything score up constantly.

Oh my god!
I've beaten cuphead on phone,
I made DOOM eternal on ps4,
I P ranked all ultrakill levels on brutal diff in PC,
Did undertale on phone
And EVEN have 20 demons on geometry dash.
But DAMN! I CAN'T WIN ANY TOUHOU GAMES ON NORMAL DIFFICULTY!
in imperishable night, there are sometimes "slave" enemies circling the "masters"
if you shoot these in human mode they will just die
but if you kill the master in youkai mode they will drop lots of time orbs
if you pay attention to when to focus and when to unfocus getting the time requirement is trivial
Term is familiar I believe , and they can be thrown or used at a stationary turret
A few fun facts about Imperishable Night:
There is a second stage 6 to choose from.
(It’s my second favorite, second only to Phantasmagoria of Flower View ofc lmao)
PoFV is definitely different from the other games, and I hated it too when I first played it.
The best thing I can recommend going forward is to try not to be "tryhardy" with the Touhou games, also it's helpful to only process things that are remotely close to your character after learning how the bosses pattern works, since most patterns you see, while beautiful and chaotic, are actually fairly simple when you realize the only harmful things are the things actually coming your way and not existing by the wayside
Also expect Touhou 11 to give a decent spike in challenge, stage 3 and 5 feel like the most challenging but stage 1 and 6 ironically feel the easiest, excluding the boss fight in 6, also please for the love of all that is Touhou... Pay attention to the Music flow in stage 6 and the way it blends with the action, it's beautiful, absolutely beautiful
I love watching people get into these games and hearing their toughs,my favorite is 15 because grazing is really fun and it feels like a kaizo romhack in terms of level design.
0:42 technically it is, but there's a special term for these games instead: *bullet heaven*
1:22 you're not the only one to confuse Windows 98 and PC-9801, Japanese computers of the time, emulators of PC-9801 exist out there on the internet fyi
Neko Emulator, my beloved
I was a little disappointed to not see you touch the Extra Stage for any of the games
I'd heavily suggest it, as they're more bite-sized experiences that allow for practicing more easily and readily than if you wanted to beat the game on Lunatic.
At least you can unlock extra in pointdevice in LolK , but I just cannot do a SA 1cc
congrats clear the main story!
but it is the time to complete without using any continues in any difficulty (some are easy exclusive) to unlock the EX stage
Yeah. Or you could just do both at the same time and only use continues as a de facto practice mode
No continues, bitch!"
10/10 time to get good
Human shots make most of IN harder, actually.
Anyway, good luck with the rest of the games
There's still a whole world to fall into
I realize now after watching this video that Touhou rewired my brain into the ultimate dodge machine when I watched you talk about stage four while I was searching for the dodge spots in the middle
Edit 1: (2:45) Yup... stage 4 is quite the spike, threw me off too (cause PC-98 games have a much smoother curve)
So I totally feel you.
"Remilia is the hardest boss in this game."
Flandre: *cries in the basement*
Hard and Lunatic are still harder than the Extra stage, so he isn't exactly wrong.
@@lasatar6428 Lunatic yes, but hard is debatable and depends on the game. If we're just talking about the bosses alone, Flandre is harder than Remilia on Hard
5:40 he didn't do the secret level-
The thing about Patchouli is that she set a tradition for a somewhat personalized stage 4 boss: she has so many spell cards that she selects a specific set based on your own character setup, with the overall aim of pushing you away from your preferred firing positions.
(I make the same mistake there a lot.)
Imperishable Night I mostly like for the plot; there are so many playable teams that you get a lot of different perspectives on what's going on, and two of the parties involved have a great deal of past experience with that sort of thing even if they don't feel like sharing more than hints.
WAIT MY BEAST IBM HOME COMPUTING SYSTEM FROM 1996 IS STILL USEFUL FOR SOMETHING???
...that being playing touhou games
NEC PC98, not Windows computer, though you can play Touhou 6 on Windows 98 if you want
Can't wait to hear your opinion on Touhou SA!
5:00 mate I feel you I've gotten a 99.35 and a 99.38 completion on pcb. It sucks
I always like seeing people playing this for the first time! I like almost everything about the game! except the fact that Zun is still learning to draw... Now complete the extras!
(Note: there is a patch that will show your hitbox and the real hitbox of bullets in th6, it is really helpful)
My favorite games are EoSD, LoLK (considerated the hardest one, play it with a crappy computer if you want to win) and WBaWC (but UM is actually getting there, messing with the cards is so fun!).
Thanks bro
the moment you chose hard mode
i had my first true laught in a while, just that was special
Really impressed with the quality of the video, it was extremely fun to watch and I would've expected way more subscribers.
It's also really cool to hear thoughts from the perspective of a new player and being able to relate to a lot of them when I think back to my first weeks of playing Touhou.. ^^
Recognizing multiple themes because of other games like Geometry dash/osu was also one thing I absolutely loved when getting into Touhou.
Little does he know the first Touhou game isn’t even a shmup so it’s a good thing it wasn’t easy to play.
Yeah, HRtP is the weirdest of all the main games lol
