How to Play Blues Turnarounds in Open D Tuning

Open D, back again. I love this tuning. Today we are going to look at 6 different turnarounds with distinctive sounds and styles. These turnarounds are influenced by the delta blues, piedmont blues, Texas blues and even a little bit of Chicago in there all applied to this very delta tuning. By the time the blues hit the state of Texas it was plugged in and amped up, think ZZ Top, with big fat riffs and distortion. Now, that is a bit of an exaggeration because guys like Lightnin' had been playing acoustic and unplugged in Texas for a long time, but the specific sound is this big fat fuzzy riff based sound. So I took one of those, worked it out and arranged it for open D, and that is just one of the six turnarounds. The idea is that there is variety and but each one is fun to play and has its own vibe.

I bought a Gretsch Jim Dandy just so I wouldn't have to re-tune to open D. Good for you on teaching alternate tunings. Time to break out the slide. Have a happy and brilliant new one.
