    He was an amazing player and also such a great teacher. His accompaniment to "Cry me a river" to Julie London's beautiful voice will never be equalled or surpassed.

    barney is one of the greats. My first guitar teacher worshiped him and was sporting a "barney"beard. I love his early work ( before the excessive sweeping) , great teacher too..Thanks for uploading!

    If you can get ahold of any of the "poll winners" albums with Barney Kessel playing along side Shelly Mann and Ray Brown do yourself a favor and do so. Highly recommended listening!

    Even his supposed "easy to follow" instructional jamming sounds amazing and authentic. Barney was a lot of younger bebop and jazz musicians' favorite.

    Isnt this just arpeggio-broken arpeggio of some sort?
    Not to be ambiguous, but i really like the way he puts those simple way of teaching into a very insightful lesson rather than just complicate things.

    Many years ago my music teacher gave me an assortment of cassettes taken from a clinic on creativity by Barney Kessel. At one point Mr. Kessel talks for a while on visualising a cup of coffee. I was too young to understand the object of the exercise, too impatient to just get down and play, to benefit much from the talk, but I wish I still had those tapes.
    Because today I realize that creativity and having the chops to express that creation, as being the most important aspect of any musical endeavour.

      mosrite60 when I was in my late teens in the late 80's everything was Hot Licks videos lol. We rented them from the local music store. But the people that get really good on guitar seem to have the ability to go beyond what they're taught. They work things out and say "hmm if I can do this, I can also do this and this and this." I'd be like ok I learned this, show me something else lol. I only ever got half as good as my teacher. I'm 50 now and still learning. But these kid prodigies today are nuts. But anyway, I always had the ear to make music enjoyable. It was never drudgery.

    • @mosrite60
      @mosrite60 4 роки тому

      @@luvpants2012 Yes, all good players have the natural talent with them. I know guys who attended GIT in LA and studied with the best, but somehow weren't better than the farm boys who had talent. For sure the present instructors teach how to sight read better. I read about one dude from UK who attended GIT for 2 years. But sadly on return he found that he couldn't play with other good jazz guys because many played by ear only. He was lost as needed the sheet music. ! But things much different now. Young kids 14 years can listen to James Burton licks and pickup quickly. Different world out there. Certainly. Thx.
