- The Police video clip "When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around" shot during their first world tour called "Zenyatta Mondatta" on 1980.12.14-16 or 1982.02.16-17 in Pao de Acucar / Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Concert excerpt is from The Police playing in USA, Los Angeles, Variety Arts Theatre on 1981.01.16. It was the last concert, which ended the "Zenyatta Mondatta" tour. Attendance - 1100 sellout.
Sting - leading vocals, bass guitar, contrabass
Andy Summers - guitar
Stewart Copeland - drums
The song with one riff, with no traditional structure, also Copeland's most straight performance devoid of fills & accents, all capped off with Summers' scorching one note guitar solo. How The Police could turn such a basic concept into a complex work of art was part of their genius.
It's one of my favourite tracks by them. There's something in it's relative simplicity that hooks me every time I hear it. Then there's the live sequence in the middle of this video where Stewart and Sting's playing gives it a whole new dimension.
@@groovytrev yes and Andy’s splendid guitar!
Yes I miss the 80's
Me too Hun
Saw them in Rio in '82, I was 14 and I ran away from home in Campinas, took an 8 hour bus ride, a cab and scalped a ticket. I called my parents from a payphone in Rio to tell them I was OK. Got grounded, 1000% worth it.
Where did they play in Rio?
@@HarryJoiner Yes, Rio at the Maracanazinho
@jsk29 is that a smaller version of the giant soccer stadium? I’ve been to maracaná. That was massive. It had a moat around the field.
@ is that a smaller version of the giant football stadium? I’ve been to maracaná. That was massive. It had a moat around the field.
I’ve probably watched Police Around The World a thousand times since it came out.
That part where Sting and Stewart are locked with Sting riffing high on the neck and then Andy’s long 16th note single string scream bringing the whole groove back still blows my fucking mind. One of the best live recordings of all time. Long live The Police.
I loved that whole video! Watched it many times. Turned on my VCR….is that what he sings?
@@ATXviIIIe That is correct. In 1980, when the song came out, VCR's were still a relatively new-fangled gadget. Now, they're ancient history.
The instrumental section elevates the song to a whole new level.
The world was a new place to sting back them. He’d never been to Japan before, or places like South America. I do think that age of everything being exciting and new created a vibe that came through the music which is unique to those early Police albums. I heard The Police Self Portrait on the radio about 1984 and remember sting talking about a spirit of adventure that was completely new.
Great song. Underrated on the album.
Sting has travelled the world for almost half a century but the very first time he saw the world was touring with the police. It was all new to him back in those days which created an atmosphere and vibe through the music that’s unique to those early records
the one note solo that sounds better then most solos with more then one note Fantastic! the Great! Andy Summers
kind of like his buddy , bob fripp.
Sh*t! Absolutely love the way it jumps from studio to live back to studio. Love these guys.
I have loved the police since the 80's n my #1 fav song since I was 13 and to this day at 48 til im gone! ♡♡♡
Me too! Same story and I think we're the same age bc I'm 49 now :)
Oh me too
Damn! That live portion was tight as hell. This is why they were one of the best 3 man bands in history.
I’m glad I was around in the 80’s music... Nothing better than this. 👍🏻
Except the 70s and 60s
I love simplistic, dumb, glossy generalizations that have no real significance other than to get strangersto agree with you!.

My absolute favorite cut from The Police! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Mine too Hun
I remember when this came out. Thank you for selecting this particular clip. It’s my favorite version if this song and I can’t find it as a track or song. 😢
That live interlude sounds so good!
The best band of the 80's!
This songs speaks to me a lot... I need to concretize what is left of my possibilities, so wide are they, but so heavy is my anxiety and procrastination. The wrestle ensues.
I played this album to death when I was a child back in 1981, this is the first time I'm seeing this video.
This is from a documentary type film that came out in 1982 called The Police Around The World which followed them on their 1980/81 world tour which is available to watch on UA-cam.
One of the greatest three-piece bands ever
This is absolutely a fucking brilliant song you can dance and rock out big time I'm.45 from New York City
2:53 pure master craftsmen.. that break down from live to album version is just out of this world AMAZING!!!!
2:20 Only Andy can make a one-note solo sound cool
Valid point but is it a guitar solo though? More like a bass solo with the guitar creating ambience IMO
Neil Young (via Cinnamon Girl) begs to differ.
@@quentinjames981could almost argue it's a three point solo with the way Stewart Copeland is playing in the instrumental section.
@@groovytrev Right!! Damn 5 years ago I wrote that comment…
Nothings changed this is still my anthem!
My #1 FAVORITE Band!! I am crazy about this group.
Mine too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mine too and me too!!!
I know everything
Love this song and the highlights were the guitar riff, the bass riff, the drum hit sounds like a drum machine, and finally that horns that give an awesome style to the song.
One of the best live versions of WTWIRD... for me the best... love the horns, guitar and bass solo, that beat on the electronic snare and Sting shout...
The Covid-19 confinement tune at it's best ! Love this song
The first time I see The Police was in Chile in February in 1982 in The Festival de Viña de Mar. The Police is Power. A big hug from Easter Island Chile 26 June 2021.
I really enjoyed your video combining studio and live..thanks for your efforts and thank you for posting..!
It's actually off "The Police Around The World" video release
this original video collaborated w/live footage is awesome, my all time #1 song of theirs, i could listen to andys cords on this forever track forever!!! ♡♡♡
Cuando el mundo se está agotando, sacas lo mejor de lo que queda.....
Pure talent
We’ll all be able to see this in clearer vision when the newly released DVD and cd comes out in May this year.....
FYI...the poster did not create the studio/live mix. This is a clip from the 1982 movie Police Around The World.
Loved how @ 1:02 kicked in !!🤣🤙
I like the Police and have a few albums on cd and liked their music very much.
That drum SOUND
This tune, they did that! !!!!
Saw this band at aloha Stadium in Hawaii awesome concert that was!
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!
First time in 1982!
1980
Greasy Tony's, a New Brunswick NJ joint. Stewart wearing their shirt around the world, waay before made popular in Revenge of The Nerds. A true trendsetter that Copeland he is.
Sooooo love this song and video!!!!!!!!
Damn Gordon was so good looking. they were great live. all 3 are fine musicians. but there were personalty clashes , some pretty big egos. they are each dominant persons, and each are very intelligent , and well educated. Strong willed . but the gnarly little centipedes of success grind away at us. alas , brilliance is never sustained without sacrifice. or pain of death. or worse, rejection. cheers!
I feel like I am waiting for Moonraker's "Jaws" character to appear on that Brazillian cable car at any minute.
Beautiful job Andy Lukosius
2022: In the 80s after john Lennon’s death bands like this was all there was in terms of rock music and even these bands were retro as I didn’t get their greatest hits til 86 or so ; so they were already nostalgia for me; hope my health improves so I can see the light again in my own life; I mean that from my heart
Keep your boombox videos and CDs👍♥️
the video it's so cool I always think rio and the police
A song for these times
The Police and The Clash are tied for Coolest Band Of All Time.
Great music
Awesome!!
This song is so underrated, just like the Nissan Titan !!😂🤣 A hidden gem ..✌️
Meus amores na minha cidade em 1982! R"YO" de Jane"YrO"!🌷🌷🌷
The bass rules
Its a shame the entire LA Variety Arts Theater show was never released. There's quite a few clips of it on Police Around The World. The Zenyatta tour was great they were in top form. I saw them at the beginning of the east coast shows in 11/80 at the Capitol Theater.
Obrigada!
How is it that this is my favorite Police song, and this is the first time I ever saw this video. 🤦🏾♀️
Nice video...thanks for uploading..unfortunately for me, this tour, off of what I think is my favorite of any album of all time, ghosts, had way too much up-tempo, sting improv Rearrangements of such great songs, it was actually a very difficult concert to listen to. The horns, that were so great on the album were really awful. Almost every song they played sounded different from the studio recording. I get that artist s get bored, but people don’t pay to hear completely different variants of their favorite songs. They got slightly back on track with the synchronicity tour, probably because of all the negative feedback. And unfortunately they were completely different for the reunion. Favorite band of all time and there are some really fantastic early live performances....for those who felt they weren’t really a good live band, well that was not the case. There early stuff is dazzling with each of them unbelievably talented in their own way and as a trio, magical. Unfortunately we never got to hear some of the most interesting tracks from ghost, Omegaman, darkness, etc. live.
amazinggggggggggg!!!!
Coolest band in the world
3:08 look behind Sting closely
copeland must have had a trampoline!
I interviewed Summers not long after this. He told me I reminded him a bit of Sting. lol
I interviewed Sting not long after your interview and he said Summers reminds him of you...
Rolling Stone dissed "Ghosts in the Machine" but some Good tracks on THAT one, Too.
...and, their "Bassist" played an actual Double-Bass!
80s Police so much better than the reunion stuff aside from when they mixed it up with Next to you for example they were a live jam band and broke up at the wrong time....
Looking back I'm of the opinion that The Police probably split at just about the right time and they'd taken the band as far as they could.
Both the video is in Brazil, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and their live video is in Maracanzinho in 1982 when they first came to Brazil that same year. In 1:47 min we can hear metal sounds, something characteristic of Ghost in the Machine Tour.
Metal?
@@SeatLeonMK2 , Sorry, I expressed myself wrong, I meant wind instruments, like, trumpet, saxophone...

The Hotness that is Sting!
Mmmmm! 😍😍😍
the story of my life now
🔥🔥🔥
The jam bridge starting at 1:45 and going until 2:32....my god. If that doesn't give you chills, you're a corpse.
Stewart's drumming and Sting's bass in that section are simply awesome.

Same food for years and years I hate the food I eat. WAIT. this is NOT the actual food. Something very very strange and unwelcome has happened to the food supply chain. Big AG ate all the farmers. Now it's ✌🏻 up to each of us to learn food growing and tree seed eating survival skills. Thank you Monsanto 🕊 Corporation for turning corn into something we can no longer eat that you syruptize and substitute for the natural sugars which keep us thriving. Everyone plant every seed that comes your way from now on until we get a vast abundance of healthy food to share once again.
Very cool! However that live portion seems to be filmed during their 'Ghost In The Machine' tour rather than the 'ZM' one, going by the added saxophone bits.
The baseline makes it happen...
Here in Brasil
♥
The live footage is from LA, January 1981.
thank you very much .
January 81'... the month and year which I was born
Stew is speeding up that beat😂
as usual , but it's still magic !
RIO DE JANEIRO !
This is Brasil, not Argentina. They are at Pao de Acucar / Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janiero.
Thank you for correcting my mistake. I couldn't find any information about 1980-1981 The Police playing in Brazil, probably when they were playing in Argentina they could visit Brazil too just for fun or it might also be 1982.02.16-17 (this date when The Police played in Brazil).
+Andy Lukošius they played in Rio 80 at maracanãzinho arena. sold out.
Police in East video contains the South American tour from this period you can also find the entire tour listed some places.
The up tempo change at 1:04 ruins this otherwise great video
Is this the official music video of When the World is Running Down? It definitely looks like one.
The thing is though they didn't use the studio version of the song throughout the video. It switches from the studio to a live performance and then back to studio. So I'm not sure.
This came from their documentary Police Around The World. Good Documentary.
I've never seen this, why it isn't on DVD/ Blu-Ray or an official download?
Probably some kind of rights issues that never got straightened out.
Stewart always set the tempo way too fast in concert.
I run 'Deep Throat' again ... It ran for years and years
ohhhhhhhhh
MENSA answer video.
the Police im Erfolgsjahr 1980
why dont they ever show the whole video??????
\Oo Rio 😎, 🇧🇷... Agora, aquela camisa do tio 🤢 MARX foi só prá criar uma polêmica, né?
how are they all so fucking hot????
2020 ..world finished
When the world is running down, you make with god up whats still around
South America is like the Mexican Hispanic North America
the live version is too fast... so lacks the groove
Agreed. It just doesn't sound ... right.
Why the fuck is sting wearing a Karl Marx shirt?
80's porn Intro! 😮
WHY IS STING WEARING A KARL MARX SHIRT WHAT THE FUCK
Because he's a wannabe posh intellectual twat with no clue of how reality works for people in actual Marxist countries from inside his celebrity bubble.
As much as I admire Sting and Stu, I more stand against those kinds of ideals, just exactly HOW is a Party line vote for a Democrat ticket a sustainable option?
