It's so cool to hear a classic in its beginning stages where they don't have all bugs worked out yet. It only contributes to the raw power of it in a funny sort of way. Great stuff!
“Love can mend your life, but love can break your heart.” stings melody is so poetic here, and I’ve never heard him singing like this anywhere else so raw.
i was lucky enough to work on a doco crew filming these guys in 1980 in Australia....still one of the best times of my life....the after party at the Canberra Rex still makes me smile even today.
This is truly a perfect band and havin Copeland on drums doesn't hurt. Can't forget Sommers with his nearly impossible hand stretches. Oh and Sting on vocals too. I truly think they are a perfect band.
Yeah you get tired real easy playing that opening riff... Even Simmers struggles a tiny bit sometimes in these early recordings which gives me a bit of a pat on the back sometimes 😂
What a genius - one of the best riff in rock not to mention Copeland creativity trying to catch up with the singer and Summers technicality to make it possible --
j'aurais aimer être là !!! j'étais qu'un petit bébé à cette époque , bravo pour votre musique et là collaboration avec Jean-Jacques Goldman , sublime pour nous 👌💖😍 Merci 😍
It's great to find a great video of a great band that has only 40,000 views. Then you know it's a real gig. Just think you could go to polyversity in those days and see a real band.
Really cool to hear Stewart Copeland play a lot of the same patterns he would end up using on the record. Honestly this is a great version, especially considering this is the first time they performed it live!
saw them live 1980 watched Andy’s guitar hand stretches.. it took me about 6 months to get that riff.. but I got it.. it’s really a stretch.. but one of the best guitar riffs ever.. lad and rhythm and a bit of bass.. the sr guys were/are fucking game changers.
I've heard a lot of people say that in later years, Andy Summers was no longer able to play the parts... but he wasn't able to play the parts in the early years either :)
I tend to categorise singers as having a strings, woodwind or brass like voice. James Brown was a trumpet, Alison Moyet clarinet/bassoon. I can't decide about Sting. Something unique.
one of my fave songs ever..lyrics chords.. Sting Andy.. and Stewart you killed song.. and the first ever performance before Sting started to add the Bob Marley ‘Yo yo yo.. which got rather repetitious in future performance and a future album Regatta de Blanc..
Ok all just came back to me, am 46 bear with me this was erm...... my time...... Pop goes to College..... BBC2 1979 ....... BUT before MIaB was released as a single absolutely brilliant you wouldnt believe what emotions....... blah blah blah that has brought out in me ...... fech I'm 46 getting married in 4 weeks....... Gaun the Police !!!!!
“New song, first time we’re performing it live” that is INSANE to hear !!
yes
This song became The Police's first Number 1 hit in the UK and Ireland in September 1979.
Larry Wyse and with good reason
Hard to believe Andy is 37 in 1979
Holy shit he is almost 80?
@@emfraridades7261 Born 1942.
He looked very good for 37 here. Still looks good even today never would have guessed he's 80
He didn't look it

The dynamics in the refrain are just astounding.. they never recreated it again ever - and this was a live show
“Love can mend your life, but love can break your heart.” stings melody is so poetic here, and I’ve never heard him singing like this anywhere else so raw.
A piece of Police History that first time's "Message In A Bottle" live...and a great quality video...Thanks so and congratulations !
Wow, just a couple of years later they were playing sell out stadiums, how fantastic to have been at Hatfield Poly that night!
i was lucky enough to work on a doco crew filming these guys in 1980 in Australia....still one of the best times of my life....the after party at the Canberra Rex still makes me smile even today.

Those add 9 chords are certainly painful to learn.

The drummer sounds like a pure legit human drum machine .so precise. 🎉
Great song and performance. I love playing a version on my guitar and belting out the lyrics. I have a lot of learning to do!
What a genius - one of the best riff in rock not to mention Copeland creativity trying to catch up with the singer and Summers technicality to make it possible --
sting said somewhere that when he first wrote it he played it to his wife's dog who wasn't all at impressed with it
🤣💀
RIP Sting's wife's dog x
The dog is long gone, but the royalty checks keep coming in and will long after he joins the dog.
ESTE ES UNO DE LOS GRUPOS QUE EVOLUCIONARO LA MUSICA Y CON ELLOS MUCHOS JOVENES DE AQUELLA EPOCA UN GRA N SALUDO A LA POLICI
great vocals....listen to every video from this show...Sting's vocals are top notch.
A saxophone on acid.
amazing. just simply amazing. i love it. what a lucky crowd. 👏👏👏👏👏
j'aurais aimer être là !!! j'étais qu'un petit bébé à cette époque , bravo pour votre musique et là collaboration avec Jean-Jacques Goldman , sublime pour nous 👌💖😍 Merci 😍

I love this version of the song.
Fantastic set with faith and love ...1979
most important band ever ( the police groove is unique)
The early days of Police!
One of the greatest bands ever.

Smart , handsome, charismatic ..... what else -
andy summers is having trouble with that damned riff too!
u sir are one lucky dog, i a 19 yr old would give up lifetime to see this band live!
This riff. The way it (song,) was composed like a story..
I've heard a lot of people say that in later years, Andy Summers was no longer able to play the parts... but he wasn't able to play the parts in the early years either :)
te pasaste. gracias por compartirlo.
Great version still raw live
Fantastic quality
los escucho hace mucho tiempo a the police lindos recuerdod de mi juventu cuando veraniaba en quintero grande the police
Summers guitar shivers
The last note is crowning the vocal line.
Amazing!!!!!
What a treat ! 😮💨
Takes a while to load but it's well worth it :)
i was young and this stays young
My love 💘 for this trio is large scale.
4:15 Cool ending !
The second album in 1979❤❤
How is the footage this good??!!
@Josh. This was filmed by a BBC crew for a then-current UK TV series called 'Rock Goes to College'
The rest is History
First time performed in public. They went on to perfect it during the Synchronicity Tour.
Here we see Sting performing the early precursor to the Greg K bass sway :)
Awesome….

I can't decide about Sting. Something unique.
Anuzzer Lonely Day :-)
Stings voice is so cool
Really the best part of the song is Andy going off at the end of the song. Kashmir being white is always a #DELIGHT
"Hi Chris" - Sting 1979
The drummer steal the show right!!!!!!
Epic!
I have seen the police on march 1980 in athens❤❤
Only hope can keep me together
one of my fave songs ever..lyrics chords.. Sting Andy.. and Stewart you killed song.. and the first ever performance before Sting started to add the Bob Marley ‘Yo yo yo.. which got rather repetitious in future performance and a future album Regatta de Blanc..
You can still hear some of Stings Geordie accent in these early days
❤
Punk rock….
Live!
They were a fucking POWER TRIO.
Que amplificador es el Marshall que está usando Andy. Si alguien sabe y pudiera decirmelo se lo agradecería.
this is fucking epic....

Andy's guitar sounds very flat blaah ew but still great performance!
I actually like that sounding better than the more electric with added effects. This song requires a clean guitar.
🥰🥰🥰
@GUITARMASTER1388 hatfield polytechnic
Rock punk at its best --
I wonder if Sting’s bass was a fretless Fender Precision ?
Kyle reese went back to 1979 to reverse the judgement day, and he is singing
onde foi este show
Not bad... not bad at all...
Not bad! Not bad at all
The fact that Bad Bunny can have in just one day the same amount of visit this video had in 14 years is one of the reasons why humankind is fkd up
Sting sounds a bit weird in this version
More punk l feel.
Hey Sting.
God being white looked like so much fun back in those days :>
bro lmao
@GUITARMASTER1388 no but flim was
2:37 ...
Sounds more raw.the guitar and bass pop.
Stewart Copeland.
I wonder if theres a message here haha
