This guy is just incredible...
Hope they do it one more time. It’s a while since 2007. They need to it again
This made my day! I am the recording engineer of this incredible show in October of 1979. I recorded to 24 track analog tape in my Artisan Mobile recording truck parked out on Flagler Street in downtown Miami. This was my second recording for the band and it was an absolute joy, unforgettable.
You should get royalties for this.
Top notch job!!
Eli E That’s so kind! I was very young, lots still to learn.
@@artysanmobile Excellent work! Would love to listen to the entire concert!
paolo-n2000 Thank you very much. My recording was done for the band so I have no knowledge of its whereabouts now. It seems the Old Grey Whistle Test purchased rights to a small portion for a promotional film shoot they were doing that day, which you see here. That shoot was strictly limited to a few songs, to my knowledge. No video truck was present that night so I doubt there is any additional video to what you’ve seen.
Wow!
Amazing. Sting hits every note while playing a fretless bass, on all live recordings it seems. Copeland is amazing, creates so much space in his rhythms it takes you out of this world. Three excellent musicians.
"We wanted to use more space, instead of trying to get in as many notes per minute as is possible... Reggae helped us a lot with that..." - Sting 1980/81
three masters at their craft***
The fact that Stewart played most of this with one hand, just speaks for the level of talent he had/still has
I see him playing with both hands pretty much the whole time
@@Timrobrus that’s my mistake. I only saw one at the beginning
Lol, definition of epic fail... and 34 dummies like that.. Man, the only one handed drummer was in Def Leppard, I think his name is Rick Allen.. ;)
❤💪💯
This track really showcases Copeland genius.
stings ability to drive the rhythm and keep a constant bass riff while singing, especially during the jam at the same time is off the charts. Im a drummer who idolized copeland but even i will stop and recognize this fact
good !👍👍👍👍
Playing bass on this level and singing is a thing to behold.. but there was also Jack Bruce and John Wetton, who could do that with the same incredible excellence 🤩
Copeland is always well positioned on the drums like Federer on court! Amazing grace!!!
good comment dear William !
god bless !
Daniel desde Ecuador✌💕🎤🤙😉
I know drummers generally love SC but I still feel like he's under-appreciated. The percussion here is just, like, absolutely mental; I can scarcely believe what I'm hearing. There would be no Police without it.
Sting used to get annoyed at him because he was a bit all over the place sometimes.. little did he know.. also it seems that inner conflict in a band is an essential ingredient that will frequently translate into pure Magic
@@roadArt132 Well he WAS all over sometimes.. many of his accents make no sense at all.. artificial, as if he was just trying to be interesting, flashy .. Sting had enough hard time even without that, to sing and play the bass so perfectly as he did...
Even drummers don’t all understand ‘groove’ which is a time element of a beat pattern, with such minuscule divisions to be virtually immeasurable, BUT… anyone can feel it. Some drummers have mastered groove and the rest should pick a different instrument. It is the reason one person can, using a single conga drum, lay down a beat so deep you cannot remain still, no matter how hard you try.
Many years ago, I was guitarist and arranger in a band with a very questionable drummer, struggling thru yet another pointless rehearsal. We sounded better if he didn’t show up. A drummer acquaintance at that time - Jean Bolduc- now my closest friend in the world, stopped by to hang. Our pretend drummer left to get a beer. While he was gone Jean grabbed a cardboard box to play cajon-style just to help out as we continued work on the song. In ten minutes we had played three perfect takes, the first ever of that piece. Beer guy returned to find he’d lost his job.
That’s groove.
@@artysanmobile So right.. I dont know who it was.. I think Miles Davis, who said - to keep the groove, you have to have what he called "protecting the beat".. like some inner timing, subdividing the obvious beat, that timing, to what you call minuscule division.. so to the point, that I couldnt have said that better ! The best example to me is Al Jackson Jr.. just watching videos of him drumming, you see it .. and the same was Bonham
@@tomasvanecek8626 Bonham was a legendary groove machine. In fact, drummers who have it are widely loved especially by those who know nothing about it technically. Ringo was a groover. Charlie Watts so much so that the Rolling Stones should just step down. I often thought Led Zeppelin showed tremendous restraint going in different directions. It was never going to be the same without him and they impressed the hell out of me by knowing it.
I have some close friends who are legendary drummers, groove monsters. They have spoiled me forever. I’ve been super fortunate to record the greatest live throughout my career. It is the magic for every drummer - hand drums, percussion, kit. A clock that seems to run all on its own.
Good god, Stewart's playing on this is unreal
OMG!...THIS is when the Police were the Police..so frikn good and to this day..nobody..gets more out of a hi-hat and snare drum than S.Copeland...one of the crispiest drummers EVER...
I've been a drummer most of my 60+yrs.NOBODY plays drums like that.................Period.
Court Beall Copeland is my favourite drummer of all time, brilliant.
The king of hi-hat!
I 'learned' how to play this groove many years ago - only to see videos like this and find out I learned it wrong! Who would have thought to play it like this - besides Copeland, that is...
Greg Saunier of Deerhoof gets close. Or maybe *wants* to get close! Same energy without quite the same level of technical excellence.
ua-cam.com/video/5cQ9kUPoaqI/v-deo.html
WRONG! THE DRUMMER OF JOY DIVISION WAS GENIUS AMAZING UNTIRED! A GIANT!
This is a masterpiece of Stewart's work
Stewart Copeland ROCKS.. literally... I just LOVE him - best darned drummer EVER - just sit back and REALLY LISTEN, he's so blinking underrated! ❤
That snare drum sounds absolutely perfect. Gawd this is a great recording.
Can we also talk about Sting playing a fretless and never looking at it? wtf?
Stewart had some scary chops. So athletic and very precise.
Stewart had also refined the use of an echo specifically on his hat to a very high level. Between my two shows with them that year were only a few months but he had stepped it way up. We had time the afternoon of this show and he was very generous sharing his method. Those who know - mostly but not exclusively drummers - recall what an essential part of the band’s sound that became, leading to the exacting use of a switch beside the heel of the pedal sending his hat mic thru his onstage echo to the hat mic channel. He worked that system masterfully in my opinion, sending just the right phrases at just the right level to syncopate with his own playing. 44 years ago, an innovator.
Everything that was best and unique about the band diluted into one live clip
Summers and Copeland. two geniuses
There were three geniuses in that band.
you mean Sting and Copeland
Xchardtop Andy summers was a virtuoso in his instrument I'll have u know
I guess that is what he wrote. And there is Sting. :) Great Band. One of my few favorites.
TheGalwayFarmer no. He means summers and copeland
The best version ever of this amazing song
These three they pioneered the sound of 90's drum and bass...with real instruments.
Andy Summers. A master. Up there with Gallagher, Fripp Hendrix, Howe, Hackett, Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor
Yes he is. No one mentions his mastery of timing. He’s so tight, not an easy thing playing around copeland and sting
Andy Summers beats all the others... it's just a shame most people don't appreciate or recognize what an amazing talent he is.
@@samanthafox2664 I really like most of those players named, but indeed Andy is better in many ways. I think it's his understated playing that fits the band and music perfectly that makes him the best. He is the most accomplished and and tasteful too. Very rare.
@@qballshanratty1447I heard an interview with him recently and he said 'my timing's immaculate'. No hint of arrogance or conceit-just a matter of fact.
Rory Gallagher ;)
Andy summer is so underrated he and Copeland please
so so amazing....who can even touch this? Copeland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sing this song and play that bassline...I dare you!!! And Andy Summers..those chorused pull off and tasty echo!!! Man I miss these guys live!!! I am lucky to have seen them.
6 minutes and 45 seconds of awesome
awesomeness*
👏 ALL 3 👏👏 ARE FIRE 🔥and my love for them is insane. There is NO POLICE if you remove ONE of them! Stop shitting on Sting!! He wrote the damn classics including the chords. Singing his ass off while playing fretless. Steward started the band but Sting felt that he wanted to go further with his music. Plus they were all burned out after non-stop touring for 5 damn years!! You can't fault him for that. I love The Police the most but Sting is also one of our greatest songwriters. Be glad that we have the music and YT.
💯 Sting best song writer for my money and his bass lines are incredible Spirits is my fav
Copeland is a machine! A cyborg.......like no other.
Not many bands have been that tight and that great.
I was there baby!
Chris Hernandez jealous !!
they're such absurdly good players....i love when they jam out in a psychedelic reggae sort of way.
I love the 'quiet part' with Andy's guitar echo/reverb touches. So good.
I come back to this video every few months and these guys were so fkin good. This is one of my favourite live videos ever
I watch as many Police clips as possible but this is stunning. Stewart on a percussionist wet dream, Andy using his classical skills and Sting grooving it out on a wild jam. This is so different from the other clips amazing. Thanks for posting.
the best song and performance.
Jazz more than classical.
They always played "The Bed's Too Big..." like this live in 1979 and 1980. There are full concerts in both video and audio which bear witness to that here on UA-cam.
Stewart Copeland !!
One of my all time favourite bands. Saw them twice at Festival Hall in Melbourne back in 1980 and '81, sensational live band. Three outstanding musicians.
This is Miami 10/26/79. Incredible show.
Where was that Gusman?
@@miami5547 yep
My favorite 'Police' song.
Craig Hancock I agree!
+Ziggy “Frappanised” Zappada It's one of mine too. Mainly because Sting's bass playing is on par with Summers and Copeland on this one.
Robby Gaume Yeah, I like Sting as a bassist, yet he is mostly ahead of the beat... an old English 'punk' thing. I agree Sting's playing is on this song is 'on par' with Andy and Stewart.
Absolutely, also my most favorite!
Who knew that a drummer and a bass player and a guitar player would become one of the greatest bands ever
Rush.
What?
Cream. Jimi Hendrix Experience.
OMG Stewart Copeland ❤️🥁
Copeland pioneered.... I read an article by Jason Bonham... his dad took him to watch the police.... jb was a fan... especially the hi hat work... nobody was playing this way..
Who knew that a drummer and a bass player and guitar would become one of the greatest bands ever
los tres son increíbles
This is one of the best live Stewart on "Bed's too big..." This is some sick sht. Listen to Stewart! Blows my mind. I do several rewinds like the dancehall people say.
Three masters at work
This is so fabulous it's scary. When Sting stares menacingly, his hair in a punkish uprising, it feels like a timeless moment. The improvising here astounds - things get psychedelic in a way. A landmark in rock music, The Police.
Sting is awsome. They all are in fact
Copeland has so much talent and energy
Génial, le groupe à son sommet
Très juste
Raw magic yet eloquent...love these guys
Yup this was when the police were hot, the scene was awesome too !
Stewart Copeland. FIT.
Wow, that just blew me away. As much as I admire Sting and Andy's musicianship and talent , Stewart steals the show on this.!
God, this song is so good. Fell in love with it as a teen; love it even more at sixty.
Copland was the best in this period.
The Police music was awsome because of mystery arpeges notes, reggae rock was new at this period.
I wasn’t born at this period. The first time i heard about The Police, i had 3 years old, i was so happy to listen music and this band. They made me love music!
Ps: sorry for my english
From 2:42 to 5:38. What a band!
Great Stewart Copeland !
Best live Police clip out there.
Stewart Copeland's drumming is the bomb!!
For years I had their show in Paradiso Amsterdam on 22 June 1979 on cassette/tape. Played it so many times until it broke down. This gig 4 months later is even better, listen to these lads starting at the improvisation at 2:44. What fantastic & weird sounds, generated by just 3 guys - amazing
Bob Marley would have been proud of the police on the beds to big without you
First band i ever saw live at Bingley hall, my dad took me aged 9 as i loved them so much, still sends shivers down my back
One Amazing,Band, truly one of a kind, Thanks for your masterpieces,,🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Beautiful musicians
Stewarts straight up chops and hand speed is frightening at this point!
Excellent recording and show. This is why the Internet exists.
lol, this is why good music is good music. not internet
JayLeePoe I am truly delighted so many are enjoying this today. I was the music recording engineer on this date, using 24 track analog recorders in my recording truck out on Flagler Street. I have not heard it back for almost 40 years.
Peter Yianilos do you remember if they played walking on the moon that night ?
Anicey Yzloc Yes, it was about to be released in a few weeks and become an enormous hit. I had recorded them earlier that year in a club in .S. Fla when the song was completely unknown. They announced it as ‘a first time performance’ but that is a fairly common little lie, so who knows? The song absolutely floored me. It was new musical territory.
@@artysanmobile damn I'm sure you were
I don't care what ANYONE else thinks... these guys are the ABSOLUTE BEST at what they do! I'm 54 years old (oh goodness, really - yes, REALLY!) and have been a fan since I was a child... I loved them since the first moment I heard them and am very happy to have ALL their albums on both "old fashioned" vinyl and CD PLUS I have seen them LIVE! Therefore, I consider myself able to honestly say that Stewart, Andy and Sting are probably amongst the BEST MUSICIANS you / I will EVER come across! They truly know their craft - and, IMHO, are the best at what they do... original to the core... LOVE THE POLICE, ALWAYS & FOREVER xxx ❤
Still getting your tits out?
Absolutely agree!!!
These guys played every venue big and small.
Incredible
absolutely amazing! Copeland, the rythmatist
Bed's too big without you
Cold wind blows right through that open door
I can't sleep with your memory
Dreaming dreams of what used to be
When she left I was cold inside
That look on my face was just pride
No regrets no love no tears
Living on my own was the least of my fears
Bed's too big without you
The bed's too big without you
The bed's too big
Without you
Since that day when you'd gone
Just had to carry on
I get through day but late at night
Made love to my pillow but it didn't feel right
Every day just the same
Old rules for the same old game
All I gained was heartache
All I made was one mistake
Now the bed's too big without you
The bed's too big without you
The bed's too big
Without you
Bed's too big without you
The bed's too big without you
The bed's too big
Without you
Without you
Bed's too big without you
Cold wind blows right through that open door
REGGAE MARCH! :-) favorite police song, especially live
still sound great in 2023
I was lucky to watch them live in Bombay in 1980 as a 18 year old was the best musical experience ever. Couldn’t believe 3 guys could produce music this good.
Cool jams!
EPIC IS THE ONLY WORD TO DESCRIBE THIS MASTERPIECE
Ce morceau ! Je m'envole ? Trop bon 💚
Insane song
Gran canción, gran video y audio.
La mejor banda que ha existido.
This is like a good jazz improv...
Sting and Stewart on that song really came together
Stuart Copeland's drumming is often overlooked, we talk about Sting and Andy but it's that sticks man who pegs all this down. This number is one of the best.
Copeland has long been lauded as one of the most innovative, original technically gifted drummers of all time.I am a drummer myself and his influence on my playing is immense, especially his hi hat work
This is a kick-ass jam-out here
for me this one of the bests or perhaps the best live version of this song
It's a damn shame legendary bands grow and fade away
But they didnt fade away. Sting straight up left at the prime of the police..... i think fading means they start to put out shit material after awhile then just go away do to nobody liking a band anymore.
They screw up the beginning and then turn this into a masterpiece. The magic of how they each can be playing in their own world yet stay connected was really a high wire act. Copeland is giving a masterclass on syncopation while Andy is show us all how to NOT play like any other guitar player you’ve ever heard. Sting is being a superstar frontman with crazy charisma and drop dead rock god good looks. They were an embarrassment of riches, making all that music with three instruments. The rarest of the rare.
I think this is the best version of this song, more dynamic.
The divinity trio.
Increíble Stewart!
Excellent live performance. So many memories.
steward copeland was on one wtffff.....his rhythm is craaaaaaaazy
😮 what a night that must of been right up the front center . Wicked man
All 3 ...perfect!
andy's use of chorus and delay, flange and reverb at 2:48 is just godly
Batterista incredibile... veramente "un muro del suono"...
ma tutto il gruppo è incredibile dal punto di vista tecnico...
tre talenti puri.
Pure talent, pure creativity, pure joy - sensational.
Thanks for sharing this Picasso translated in music !
Fantastic
10/10. Fucking Awesome. Maestroes.
Every one jizzes over how great Stewart Copeland is or how great Andy Summers is, which those two are great musicians surely. But people dont realize how hard it is to play bass like that while simultaneously singing like that. And in front of 5000 people.
talented musicians totally realize it , its the non musicians or low quality ones posting on you tube who dont get it
Symply « MAGIC »… how this Trio could be able to play so much incredible sounds and music… just Magic ! ❤️
Great production quality. Miles Copeland at the helm tremendous in capturing the best of the police And guiding them to success.
Kim Turner on the desk...
