Well, Conan Exiles is a great game so, if they can build on that and implement fresh systems, and of course do justice to the Dune universe, it could be pretty good.

Conan Exiles is a very good game...Funcom are very good at certain things like creating that magical atmosphere, its hard to describe it. Then they are/have been really bad at other things related to technical stuff. If they can fix the negatives they can take the next step and become one of the greats
I avoided conan exiles for about 5 years because I mistakenly believed it to be an MMO. It's not, it's solo or co-op or PVP with a small (1-40 or so) group per server. Many player-owned servers have a limit of 10 or so. Exiles turned out to be one of the best games I've played in 40 years, and I recognise a lot of that game in this preview.
Agreed. Despite the PvP focus, Conan Exiles still a great game for Co-op Gameplay. Damn shame that Funcom never bothered with more maps or map extensions (only one DLC with a mediocre map in many, many years)
Must admit did not expect this to be an MMO, was expecting it to be a single player game which I was looking forward to, MMO well we'll see, thats a big feat!
This looks amazing and although I like Herbert's universe, but I won't have the time for time-consuming survival mechanics. Hope there is a chill or creative mode.
I got so addicted to the Dune books series a few years back that if this game was released at that time it would be an instant buy for me. I may eventually give it a try. Nowadays I'm having that same hype with Warhammer 40K.

its not official movie tie in (like the msfs ornithopter was), I makes me skeptical because they are not doing it because they have passion for Dune universe but want to capitalise on the current movie. If it has good flight mechanics i may look into it more.
this isn't gonna be a flight sim bruh. like. maybe 10-20% will be vehicular based gameplay but its gonna be a lot of grinding resources, doing dungeons, looting stuff, PVE/PVP, etc

I'm somewhat interested in this but these types of games tend to be best when playing as a group and I don't know anyone who plans on playing. And going into pvp against organized groups doesn't tend to end well for solo players. But will check out reviews at launch.
There will be discords, fb groups and reddit for guilds that want to recruit players to play with. Survival games like this have made me plenty of game friends that still hit me up to play other games.

This is going to just be Conan Exile with different network for official servers connections. It literally got the same mechanics when it comes to building and combat, just in U5

How I see it is people will buy in, play it for a bit until some new shiny thing being released, and move on especially if there is a monthly fee. The game won't last long just like every other paid service.
If a live service game or mmo doesn’t have micro transactions or a subscription model it can’t survive financially. Every live service game from wow to Fortnite has realized this. You can’t have a business model where there are ongoing costs without ongoing revenue.
Honestly i'm sick of the "Largest!", "Best ever!" , "Game changing!" mmo's... I wish we could get a mmo that actualy just works, stays up, with out greedy stuf... I'd pay full price for a standard oldschool mmo these days...
So many huge misses in the games sector recently (particularly due to repeatedly putting projects in the hands of devs who don't care a whit about the source material), I don't blame you for being cautious. Funcom did a great job adapting the Conan franchise to an engaging and unique game, though, so I am hopeful they can follow on that success with this. They really seemed to take Robert E. Howard and other authors' contributions to heart there and if they're continuing in that vein I think there's a good chance we'll get something great.
When they said it was a Dune world where Paul never exists (as in does not and will never exist because Jessica doesn’t do the bene gesserit gender picking thing) I was out. Even if it was a prologue type scenario I would have been fine, but these Gen Z devs basically said “fuck the author, fuck the books, fuck the series, fuck the story, and definitely fuck the fans. We know better”. No matter what kind of technical achievement this game turns out to be, it’s not Dune.
I recently got Conan Exiles (by the same studio) in the Steam sale and I'm really shocked about that games quality. If you play it in regular coop (not on a paid server) there's a (not so high) limit to how far the players can move away from each other. If you move too far away from the host you're automatically dragged to his location. For a game based on exploration this is absurd. Doesn't give me high hopes for Dune Awakening.
Absolutely same. pretty gutted tbh. even if it was just the same game but with the ability to host locally like ark or conan id easily sink 1000 plus hours into this. Weird that it isn't.

Sounds like a combination of Themepark and Open World PvP MMO. In all honesty I think these sorts of MMOs overstretch themselves; perhaps Skyrim MMO has made money nonetheless based off the IP so this will too? But for gameplay: * Themepark = Single Player or NMS Survival-Exploration multiplayer games imho offer deeper story or exploration focus * OW PvP MMO = If the focus is not solely on combat and pvp en mass then it will be inferior gameplay combat There may be an MMO audience that will play it and make money but the general design has been done many times and is quite bland unless you're in the audience that really enjoys these sorts of designs eg Skyrim, Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy etc... That all said the graphics look awesome and the server-meshing should make the world much more feeling of alive with players and continuity so again in the MMO genre it might be successful. But just a type of game that's been done many times before seems likely with all the limitations of MMOs spread so thin across many areas so lacking depth.

What you can expect is DEI in a rust knock off with a splash of dune paint on top. they sex swap paul to a girl, House shields? the thing that cannot be used on dune since it drives sand worms mad until frenzy, tracked bikes where you cannot walk with rhythm without attracting a worm. sietches that cannot use high tech because the satellites would detect them but now everyone can build a 'house' with them. If they cared about the story they could have just set the game before the books and play the freman clans.

Never really played an MMO proper before, but this sounds amazing, and I’m definitely getting it if the reviews are good.
the laser + shield lore adjustment is that all imported lasers to the planet have a factory setting to literly unable to file if pointed at a shield

That's the feeling I'm getting. Happens every time the game is an "alternate timeline". Feels 100% like fan fiction.
I'd rather it be an alternate timeline. That way, it's not hamstrung by sticking hard to the old storyline
