Those old Nebraska-Oklahoma games were college football at its best. So fun to watch.

Gary Bender one of my favorite play by play men. Understated....never tried to make the broadcast about himself. Love the option on both sides of the ball, Nebraska with one of the all time great offenses and Oklahoma just before Switzer got them going again for his 2nd big run.

What a special game for both programs. The illegal procedure killed OU near the goal line. Nebraska held OU out but the next to last play was definitely pass interference on Nebraska on the slant route the receiver was plastered in his route laying on the ground. Im glad for Osbourne he was a class act. Sometimes your the hammer & other times the nail. I still think Osbourne should have kicked the extra point against Miami & took home a title for Nebraska. They were by far the best team in 83. Steinchuler, Rozier, Rathman, Gill & Fryar. What a team!! Spencer Tillman with one of the most spectacular run & 15 feet in the air was just incredible. Earl Johnson was just a hammer as a running back. If Earl had space he would rather go straight at the defensive player for contact. Buster Rhymes is still one of the most underrated players during Switzers tenure. If Rhymes would have stayed a running back he would have won a Hiesman trophy. He was a great wideout but was a special running back that just glided & looked like art when he ran. Anyways great memories for alot of families for Oklahoma & Nebraska. It always came down to one game for the Big 8 title!!

Many of us Husker fans had blinders on with all of the hype around this 1983 team, especially being compared to the 1971 team. I was one of them until after the 1st quarter of the 1984 Orange Bowl. I should've gotten my head out of my butt after this game in hindsight. Under no circumstances does this mean that this wasn't a great team, but the last half of their season had four, non-stellar games, including this one. The other three being Oklahoma State, Missouri, and Kansas State, all on the road BTW. I'll save the recount of my former high school classmate and his dad for another post if anyone asks.
Nebraska also knew prior to the start of this game that Texas had finished their 11-0 undefeated season earlier that day with a 45-13 drubbing of Texas A&M. These squads were breathing neck-and-neck down the stretch starting in mid-September, though Nebraska dominated the first place voting in the regular season.

Nebraska had an unbelievable offense, still one of the best ever, if not THE best ever. Problem was, the defense was average at best and the kicking game was below average.

I always felt that the 82 Nebraska squad was better than the 83 team. In 1982 Nebraska was 12-1 with their only loss coming on the road to eventual NC Penn State. They finished 1st in scoring offense at 39.5 and 8th in scoring defense at only 12.8 per game.

This game made me see Nebraska was beatable if the other team had speed. Once the orange bowl was announced they would be playing v Miami, I knew they would be in trouble. But I still think they were the best team that year. To me, losing to the 4th ranked team by 1 in basically a home game for them didn’t warrant them losing the #1 ranking.

Coach Osborne's mistake, one that he admitted several years later was not going for the two-point conversion down 31-23.
You take risk earlier than later, and that's what Darrell Royal did in the 1969 Texas/Arkansas game. The Texas Coach did not want to have a 10-10 tie scenario that Notre Dame and Michigan State had, so with Arkansas up 14-0 in the 3rd quarter, they went for two after scoring a TD to make it 14-8, and would win the game 15-14.
If Texas had missed the extra point, the game would've ended up with a 14-14 tie, but a tie without an endgame dilemma.

@@gynandroidhead hmm interesting because I never once seen or heard him say that. He knew towards the end of the game what he was gonna do. It’s stupid to go for 2 when it’s 31-23, because then you need another 2 point play to just even want to tie. End of the day, the majority side with Tom Osborne’s choice to go for 2 at the time he did. Had there been more time in the game like more then 2 minutes, then maybe kick it and tie. Have the defense get one more stop. But fact is there was 48 seconds, you wanna be National Champions, you win it, not tie!

@@gynandroidhead That's a really interesting point. I never thought about that. But another thing to consider is Miami did still have some time left if Nebraska ties, and they would have to try to score so they still could have won anyway even if Nebraska makes the two point conversion and likewise, Nebraska could still have won it after tying, though not much time left to get the ball back and score.
