Lifelong OU fan. I was at that game, and I was in the south end zone when our left tackle jumped offside on the 2 yard line. That was a down year for us, and we played a regular season game in Hawaii the next week to close out that year without a bowl trip.
That Nebraska team was incredible. I'm still sick about the Miami game in the Orange Bowl, nearly 40 years after the fact.

Amazes me looking back, as talented as Fryar was, and Gill was a decent passer compared to most of the option QBs he had for the next 10-15 years, that Fryar wasn't thrown to more. Played forever in the league, obviously talented, put up huge numbers after N.E., he used Johnny Rodgers (as O.C.) in the passing game way back in the early '70s way more. Not so much this game(weather), but in general. I would have thought Fryar would have put up bigger numbers, maybe Gill's arm wasn't as good as i remember, i was a kid.

There's always been an NCAA bias towards warm weather sites for bowl games (more fannies in the seats, vacationers' $$$ for bowl towns, etc. And if you look at the history of bowl invitations, the bowls often invite the local program - with a ready-made home crowd waiting to fill the seats).

Actually, OU dominated the 70s; N.U., the 90s. In the 80s, they were pretty even throughout the decade (Tom Osborne was almost fired in the 80s, because of the troubles they had beating Barry Switzer's teams in the 80s).
The 80s games were the best (even if it didn't work out for N.U. as often)...except for the "Game of the Century" in 1971 :-)

Don R. Mueller, Ph. D: That's quite an overstatement. In the 1950's Nebraska perhaps had no chance against OU for the most part, then Nebraska started to get the edge in the 1960's. In most of the 1970's and 1980's it was pretty competitive but OU had the edge. Nebraska won 3 straight here between losing 8/9 then 4 straight. In the 1990's you could say OU didn't have a chance against them and in the last two decades most of the time if they played Nebraska wouldn't stand a chance against OU, certainly not now until further notice.

@@dadestarmysteries255 Sounds like you are the Rip Van Winkle of OU/Nebraska football. You must have fallen asleep during this discussion: 1981-83
