    Anyone else had all their water plants grow mini size in the smaller container? I have several different water plants in my 110-gallon stock tank pond, and they all emerged much smaller than they were before I added them to the pond and smaller than they’re supposed to get.

    Great info, but I would like to share that Wisconsin has recently banned water hyacinth and water lettuce.

    I’m in Buffalo, and plan to construct a small container pond......what do I do with it come winter? Drain it and refill in spring? Leave it full? I am not putting fish in it. I want it to be a small frog pond

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  5 років тому +1

      If you have a water pump or aerator in it you can leave it going all winter without a heater. some people put a heater in it as well depending on the plants that they are trying to keep inside of it.

    I didn't realize water lilies are their own kind of category. Wouldn't they just fit in with the plants that are submerged?

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  5 років тому

      they're not necessarily their own category but there's just so many water lilies to choose from and it's a very popular plant which is why I separated it from others. And also water lilies aren't submerged their emergent because they come to the surface of the water.

    Hi there, I recently purchased equisetum for my mini sytrofoam pond. I plan to submerge the pot in the pond. Should i have drainage holes in the pot or not?

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  7 років тому +1

      Roberto Ramirez you can use the plants listed but just give shade if its extremely hot to the point where the water is getting hot and killing the plants and bring indoors during the winter if you wish to keep the same plants instead of transplanting in the spring

    are the plants annual or perrenial? can you house them indoors during a wisconsin winter?

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  7 років тому

      Erin Kathryn In each category of plant type you could find both perennial and annual but in wisconsin will have to keep most plants inside for winter because of the small size of a pond in a pot since it will freeze completely over :)

    No one is showing what to use to seal the pot hole before adding water. Home Depot and Lowe had no idea. Very frustrating.
    I used waterproof silicone glue but it's leaking

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  7 років тому +1

      Jalal Dawod ibwould suggest buying a pot that has no hole :p yes if you use one with a hole cut a circle out of an old HDPE plastic constainer and put that over your hole, then use and outdoor waterproof silicone :) it shouldnt leak unless you missed a spot

    • @Art-qy6gd
      @Art-qy6gd 7 років тому +2

      Wisconsin Wonder Garden thank you. I used just plastic to fill the bottom hole and it didn't work. I'm going with your idea.
      This lady used something that had texture of need eraser.
      I have a German Shepard puppy and he's making this project a nightmare. I have a separate one just fir plants and he pulled all plants of the Barrel. I need to get a fence and block his ass.

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  7 років тому

      Jalal Dawod yup! just cover the hole with the plasctic and thenbuse the sealant around the edges, forming a patch :) haha shepards really know how to make any project more interesting!

      Another suggestion for anyone else interested is that on mine I put wax paper under the pot and then dolloped aquarium safe silicone into the hole and smoothed it down. It's also all sealed with black aquarium silicone so that's an added layer to prevent leaks.
      But let it cure at least a week, without air contact it takes a lot longer for a glob to fully cure than the package says.

    How often do these ponds need cleaning?

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  5 років тому +2

      Sorry for such a late reply, trying to be much more active in the comment and community around my channel. This may vary depending on how much sun your pond gets as well as how much excess nutrients are in the water. If you have fish I would recommend cleaning every few months but without fish you could get away with a yearly cleaning. How have your plants been doing? also hope you're enjoying some of the many new videos on our channel!

    Is it safe or my pets to drink pond water??

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  7 років тому

      It depends on where the water is coming from. Do you mean water that has been sitting in a pot or a true pond? Is there any plants in the water?

      @@teresasanchez8853 Typically your pets won't have any problem with it. Although if its a small container you will want to make sure there is some water movement to help stop mosquito larvae and other unwanted pests from growing inside the water.

      Though I only covered the plants of the pond in a pot if you look up articles on it most of the time they recommend using fish as mosquito control around the house :)
