  • Finally, I set up a new bigger Japanese rice fish patio pond (Melaka Biotope) in my Zen Garden. It is the upgraded version of my last mini pond. This time, I got lots of new fish with just easy maintenance and bit more love and care. I made this patio pond with very old Japanese traditional method appeared in 1700s. So, it has no filter, just relies on the natural ecosystem. I am very happy with the result, and very excited to share with you my new pond! Hope you enjoy watching my new baby fish 🐟

According to many low-tech fish tank and riparian builds, a key feature of preventing algae growth and natural water filtration was using terrestrial plants and marginal plants without soil and only substrate (such as the akadama or expanded clay). This forces the plants to develop water roots in which they pull their nutrient needs directly from the water column. The lack of excess nutrients in the water column discourages algae overgrowth and keeps the water very clear. While water & floating plants help with this too, they are best at adding oxygen to the water. While terrestrial plants grown hydroponically are better at filtering the water and keeping algae at bay. Hope this helps someone ❤

For algae overgrowth..especially string algae...if you make a small bunch ( tie with string ) of BARLEY STRAW ( buy in nurseries or produce shops etc... where you buy hay .... ) it works really well to kill or restrict the algaes. I always used it in my ponds. Beautiful video thank you .

Magical! Without any techie bits of equipment you produce an aquatic oasis. There is something delightfully childlike in the way you combine all the techniques into something that is truly awe inspiring. The management of the water for the daphna is so well explained I live in the UK so I doubt if my ponds would overwinter, but I'm inspired to give it a try in an adapted format. Thank you :-)

Thank you so much for your beautiful comment from UK! This pond works in Japan where it’s quite cold in Japan and rice fish can survive under the ice. But if the entire water gets frozen, they die. Some people use a styrofoam bowl during winter because it gives better insulation. I don’t know how cold it gets in your area, but sending you the best wishes…💕

It seems to me that outdoor ponds cycle faster.
I suggest adding a pot with plants from another pond into new pond to jump start the cycle, since a lot of the good microbes live in the pot that was sitting in an older pond.
I also suggest giving away some of your medaka and adding some unrelated fish into your pond. It will help you produce more healthy fish in the future, since it will help increase the gene pool.

Thank you for your advice 😊 Regarding the water hyacinth, they were in the little pond in our property when we moved in. I know it’s registered as an invasive plant, so I got rid of them from the pond, and kept just few of them in my pot pond. I checked QLD government website. It says “You must not give away, sell or release water hyacinth into the environment. Penalties may apply.
You must take all reasonable and practical measures to minimise the biosecurity risks associated with dealing with water hyacinth under your control. “ So with my understanding, keeping the plant already in the property in the controllable small pot is not illegal. But yes, i am not allowed to release them anywhere outside, and miniature water lettuces will be great too 😊

What did u say the round Medaka was..I couldn't quite catch what u said. Your are very caring to all Ur fish and you have created such a beautiful garden n ponds.. so peaceful. I'm in Perth and it gets alot hotter n dry and also colder in winter I assume compared to Qld. I don't know how I'd go creating an outdoor pond..I only just purchased 4 Platinum Medaka two days ago and have in a 90cm long tank in my lounge that used to be my Sewellia Lineolata river tank. Iv kept the tank scape simple somewhat of a Iwaguma style which iv not done before. I'm used to having much more plants as I like to create a great environment for the fish more so than just for the look.
You really have a stunning garden. Lucky girl. 💙🩵💙

Their lifespan is a bit shorter than normal ones, but they look cute, so many people love them❤️

Pond going on 5 years now, fish were from my indoor tank and are 7+ years old. Very easy upkeep, but will need heavy duty pond filter, charcoal, clay, those plastic beads, uv etc, orandas are messy eaters and poop a lot (weekly half water change ofc).

Impressive amount of care, knowledge and dedication you show in creating such beauty! Your pond is otherworldly...if i may ask a few questions:
    1) did you study marine biology to learn this?
    2) can i built a pond without alot of the extra detail to propagate larva?
    3) what is the round fish called and its purpose?
    Thank you! Joe

    • @livelovelaughdiy
      @livelovelaughdiy  Рік тому +1

Hi! Thanks for your lovely message. I answer your questions. 1) I haven’t studied marine biology before. I just wanted to do some experiments with water flea. 2) You can make a pond with only simple setup. I have made a video of my previous patio pond which is quite simple that you can check. Just need some substrate and plants. You don’t have to give live food to the fish. You can feed them just powdered/flake food. If your fish are young and healthy, they can reproduce. But it’s easier to increase the number of fish, if there are hiding spots for baby fish. 3) The round fish is called Dharma medaka. It’s just deformed rice fish. Dharma medaka has short and round body, and if you breed lots of rice fish, you will get some of them. Apparently, the chances to get Dharma medaka increase if they are born in very hot season. They normally have shorter life than normal fish.

So glad to hear that you enjoyed my pond. I did some experiments for live food, and that was a bit of work. But apart from that, looking after the rice fish wasn’t a big deal. They are hardy. I think I could probably feed mosquito larvae even when there were little fry swimming in the pond because adults more likely catch the larvae before the larvae catch the fry. You can just feed normal dry food like goldfish flakes etc 😉

Thank you for your comment from Mexico 🇲🇽! Your aquarium is massive! I am not sure if I can answer your question about installing a small pond, but I think it is important to find the right location for a pond. Depending on what sort of fish you are having in the pond though, I recommend to observe the area first to find how much sunlight you can get in the day in summer and winter. For these Japanese rice fish, I don’t need aeration or bubbler, but you may want them for certain fish. I don’t have them in my pond, so I add water plant, shrimps and snails instead to balance the ecosystem. Also, you may need some sort of cover to protect your fish from animals from outside, like wild birds, dragonfly nymphs, toads etc… I know my pond is not perfect, but hopefully this information is helpful…
