Great video about replacing the screen. Did it today following the video...successfully. The suction cup method to separate the broken screen from the body did not work for me even after blow drying it. I had to be carefully creative and pry the screen open with the tiny flathead that came in the kit. The kit I bought had a cheap three prong screw driver. This screw driver is essential and is used the most during the replacement. The screw driver metal actually stripped and was not usable anymore. Just tried this repair. I got it all back together, but the phone won't turn on at all. I took it apart again and reinstalled the old broken screen, but still nothing. I double checked the battery ribbon is plugged in firmly. Any suggestions?
You need the suction cup to pull the display up enough to fit a pry tool or credit card between it. You can do it with two pry tools, it’s just a bit more difficult
It’s similar to one found on lots of other things, like car windscreen shades, shower caddies etc.. Most small suction cups with a bit of strength will work
Hi, super helpful video. The only thing is that i can’t unscrew the four screws on the home button cover plate so I’m stuck. Did you also have a problem with this or do you have any tips for me?
Hi, thanks for the great feedback. I haven't had trouble with those screws specifically but I have occasionally had trouble with the tri-points on the lcd back plate and with the pentalobe screws on the bottom. If they're even a little tighter than usual then they strip the head of the screw driver (the cheap included ones) and then its very difficult to remove them. A good quality screw driver shouldn't have any trouble with these small screws so either try pick one up at a local store or order a kit like the one included in the description link. Hope you manage to come right!
two of my screws that are holding the fingerprint tight have really bad pattern (almost round) idk why since this is the first time doing this. Any ideas how to get them out? Help is much appreciated! tried elasticband and glue. Drilling isn´t much of an option right? Since the screws are super tiny as you might know ;)
Hi Alexander. That can be really frustrating! Have you tried gluing the screwdriver head to the screw with a drop of super glue? If that didn't work then my last suggestion would be to use a thin cutting disc on a Dremel or rotary tool and cut a thin slot into the head of the screw which you can then use a flat screwdriver to remove. You can buy a replacement screw set for your phone quite cheaply - amzn.to/2DfyY2u
Have you heated it up enough? It should be fairly hot to touch. Then try placing the suction cup as close to the bottom edge as possible. Pull up on the cup and try insert your pry tool along the edge to help lift it up. You can often help pry the bottom edge up with two tools, push and lift with one then hold it in place with the other and repeat until the gap is wide enough to get the pry tool between.
Hi Sam, The adhesive strip can be quite tough to work free. Try leaving your phone in the sun for ten minutes or so to soften the glue. If that doesn't work, as a last resort, you can also stick it into a warm oven (not more than 50C 120F) for around 5 to 10 minutes as well. You've just got to get the edge of your pry tool under the screen once and it should all come free.

Hiya. I have a bought an iPhone 7 with a shattered screen and hope to repair it by myself soon. I have one question regarding the touch Id button. Did it work fin with the new screen? I've heard from old videos that Apple blocked it? Is this true?
Hi Hamza, I've read some online articles which suggest that Apple has disabled screens repaired by third parties on the iPhone 8 running IOS 11.3. I haven't experienced any problems on any iPhone 6 or 7 with any IOS versions I've come across so far. Just make sure that you move the touch ID sensor across to the new screen so that it stays with it's original logic board and it should work perfectly. People do run into issues when they replace the touch ID sensor with a new one, this disables the touch ID features and the button just functions as a regular home button thereafter.
@@MichaelKlements thanks for the help. I did read up on a comment on an article yesterday. Seems that by using the original home button you'll be fine.
Michael Klements Today my iPhone dropped on cement surface and screen shattered may I know how much it cost if I go for replace... or could you help me if I can do it by myself from where i get all tools 🙏
Thank you so much! It was super experience for me... everything was done the way you show here.. but a little thing you need to show here, which screws exactly going to each hall as one plate has at least one big screw. And you have to show the way you save it while you changing.
Thanks so much. A word of warning : be sure to use a good quality tri-point screwdriver, the cheapy ones don’t last more than 10 unscrewings, after that you’re really screwed. (and completely stuck)
Definitely agree with you, the tri-point screwdrivers are definitely the weak point in these kits and getting a decent one will save you a lot of time and frustration.
Skipping/rushing through a lot of crucial parts. Still very helpful, VERY helpful, and the text is very helpful as well, but a few parts would have been easier if there was a tad more explanation/not skipping/rushing. I was left having to be very careful to pay attention to how I took things apart for certain bits.
Does touch id still work this way? I thought the entire screen/homebutton assembly is non replaceable unless you copy the screens id with an eeprom programmer to a new screen/homebutton
Followed your instructions and I'm pretty sure you made me fry my phone's backlight for the original screen, AND the replacement. At 6:55 you say to plug in the battery and then the digitizer ribbon cable connectors. The battery should ALWAYS be the last cable connected, otherwise you can mis-match pins when attempting to reconnect the digitizer ribbon cables, and fry things. Super pissed right now.
@kaisha willis I read other places online. They called it a rookie mistake to connect power to any electronics before everything else is plugged back in. When I powered on the phone I could get it to vibrate, and if I removed the metal backplate from the screen I could look from the side and see there were still some lights on inside, but the screen was completely dark. I messed with it for several hours, and finally decided to just put it completely back together and do more research later. I'm gonna call it a small miracle, but when I put everything back together it just worked. I watched this, plus another UA-cam video 20+ times (yeah, this turned into more than a 7 hour long project..) so I know I had everything connected properly. If you Google "iPhone 7 screen replaced but won't turn on" you can find some good resources. Best of luck!
Can I use an entire screen from a locked iPhone and replace it with mine. Or would I need to change out the camera and button because it's linked together?
Michael you could use an entire screen from a locked iPhone. You’ll need to swap just the home button across from your old screen to keep the Touch ID functionality. The home button will still work if you don’t swap it over but you won’t be able to use your fingerprint to unlock.
Try gently warming the edges of the screen with a hair dryer before lifting it, this will soften the adhesive. Have you removed the two screws at the bottom? Start with the bottom edge of the phone.
The ones linked in the description are good value for money. They’re reasonably good quality at a good price. If you want a high quality screen then you’ll need to spend more, the best would be to buy a refurbished OEM screen.
The actual blue film is just a template, on the outside of the film is a sticky strip which is a replacement gasket. This just makes it more difficult for water, moisture or dust to get in between the screen and the phone when you close it up again.
how can i get a “ original “ screen? i want to do this to my iphone because i am supposed to return it and get it changed for a different iphone 7 because it has a ios update problem and the only way to fix it is by changing it out but my phone has a minor crack and they are charging me 159$ so where or how can i get a original screen and just replace it myself and than return it for a new iphone 7, i dont want it to be a fake 3rd party screen because if it aint the original screen they gonna charge me the 159$ hope that made sense i typed it in a rush
You can buy refurbished originals online, you'll need to do a bit of searching for them. Unfortunately Apple doesn't want people fixing their own phones, so they don't sell original spare parts.
I've never bought a refurbished original, so I'm not sure which are reputable sellers. You'd probably be best off asking somewhere like Reddit to see if any others have bought from them.
Fixed my phone somewhat perfect lol my front camera or home button don’t work tho.. gonna have to take it apart again and see where I went wrong! But the video did help a lot thank you!

I live in Toronto Mississauga .
CAD 195 + tax
i messed up my home button cuz you skipped that part man fudge!
Hey! Is it necessary to use a tweezer? The set I bought didn't come with them.
Not really, they just make it a bit easier to work with the small components.
Big thanks!!! Big help!!!
is the adhesive necessary for the screen replacement can it be done without it?
The adhesive is just a dust and water seal, you don’t need to replace it if you don’t want to. It just provides more protection to the phone.
@@MichaelKlements thank you, im repairing a phone for myself and didn't have the money spare for it so ill just leave it until i get more money
What screwdriver is used for the screws around the home button. I can’t get them off I think my screwdriver that came with my kit is stripped and need to go buy a new one thank you
These are called pentalobe screws, like mini star bolts they are so small its not easy to recognise what they are.
i cant get the screen off any tips?
Try warming it up with a hairdryer first
Do u need to buy an extra back plate or what because I got confused
No, you'll move the back plate from your old screen to the new screen.
Does the fingerprint and home button work after changing the display?
Yes it will, you just need to move the home button over to the new display and it will work perfectly
@@MichaelKlements thanks
Mine is not working it has a sharp point on top and wont let me unscrew
Tysm dude! You are saving me hundreds of dollars
That’s great!
My cat dropped my phone a while ago and my screen cracked huhuhu, will the fingerprint or home button won't get affected after replacing the screen?
can you do a video on replacing iphone 7 battery
Very helpful 👍👍
Skipping/rushing through a lot of crucial parts. Still very helpful, VERY helpful, and the text is very helpful as well, but a few parts would have been easier if there was a tad more explanation/not skipping/rushing. I was left having to be very careful to pay attention to how I took things apart for certain bits.
Thanks for this
Even using a blow dryer trying to break the seal, I couldn't get the screen off. I don't know what else to do.
Are the tools included in the iFixit Essential Electronics Tool kit?
Yes it looks like it from the product page.
Very nice video, format was really good. Straight forward and super clear. Keep up the good work here buddy
Thanks for the great feedback Felix.
i ribbed the home button connector cable... wtf do they glue this down with.
same
Does touch id still work this way? I thought the entire screen/homebutton assembly is non replaceable unless you copy the screens id with an eeprom programmer to a new screen/homebutton
Yes it still works. As long as you keep the touchID sensor with the original logic board, it will work. It doesn’t have any link to the display.
Michael Klements Had to look it up again, the eeprom transfer is required to keep truetone funcionality after a screen replacement
Do you need the gasket please reply because i need to fix my phone tonight x
The gasket just makes it more resistant to water and dust, it’s not a big issue if you don’t fit it.
What do I do if it won’t turn on
Isn't it safer to use clear packing tape across the shattered screen so pieces don't fly off somewhere?
Will the waterproofing get vanished after this change
Very helpful
Why does everyone in the videos remove the cameras?is it that the new digitized replacement screen does not come with it?
I love this but I’m just too scared to do it. I have the replacement screw and everything lol
Best of luck!
best guide
Will ur pictures erase or data delete if u screen repair or led repair ?
You should always do a backup frost just in case but no it shouldn’t.
Thanks for info
Can I use an entire screen from a locked iPhone and replace it with mine. Or would I need to change out the camera and button because it's linked together?
Michael you could use an entire screen from a locked iPhone. You’ll need to swap just the home button across from your old screen to keep the Touch ID functionality. The home button will still work if you don’t swap it over but you won’t be able to use your fingerprint to unlock.
Do i need any static protection to do this?
I haven’t used static protection on any iPhone repairs and haven’t had any trouble
How do I get the screen to come up mine isn’t after trying the suction cup and tool to lift it
Try gently warming the edges of the screen with a hair dryer before lifting it, this will soften the adhesive. Have you removed the two screws at the bottom? Start with the bottom edge of the phone.
Followed the instructions and all put back together but screen not working. Can you help?
are the screens in the description good
The ones linked in the description are good value for money. They’re reasonably good quality at a good price. If you want a high quality screen then you’ll need to spend more, the best would be to buy a refurbished OEM screen.
@@MichaelKlements where would I buy a refurbished OEM screen
Does the new screen come with a home button
No
You know that blue screen you put on before replacing the screen? What does that do?
The actual blue film is just a template, on the outside of the film is a sticky strip which is a replacement gasket. This just makes it more difficult for water, moisture or dust to get in between the screen and the phone when you close it up again.
how can i get a “ original “ screen?
i want to do this to my iphone because i am supposed to return it and get it changed for a different iphone 7 because it has a ios update problem and the only way to fix it is by changing it out but my phone has a minor crack and they are charging me 159$ so where or how can i get a original screen and just replace it myself and than return it for a new iphone 7, i dont want it to be a fake 3rd party screen because if it aint the original screen they gonna charge me the 159$
hope that made sense i typed it in a rush
You can buy refurbished originals online, you'll need to do a bit of searching for them. Unfortunately Apple doesn't want people fixing their own phones, so they don't sell original spare parts.
@Michael Klements preciate it, is there any website or something you can link me to?
I've never bought a refurbished original, so I'm not sure which are reputable sellers. You'd probably be best off asking somewhere like Reddit to see if any others have bought from them.
Can u put a black screen on a rose gold
Yes you can fit a different colour screen if you’d like to
Home button screws are not all the same length. The one for the button is shorter. Hard to see.
Fixed my phone somewhat perfect lol my front camera or home button don’t work tho.. gonna have to take it apart again and see where I went wrong! But the video did help a lot thank you!
A V Did u fix the problem ?? I need to know wanna do my phone to !
Bfk yes my dad helped me fix it
@@av9556 thanx alot enjoy your day !
You helped me a lot. Thank you.
One question does the touch I'd still work if it is the original button or will I have to have apple pair it to the screen
Hi Jimmy,
The touch ID sensor is not paired with the screen. As long as you keep the original touch ID sensor when you replace the screen, it will work perfectly afterwards.
@@MichaelKlements thank you
