4 Tibialis Anterior Exercises

  • Today's video covers exercises for the tibialis anterior muscle, which is our primary ankle dorsiflexor. Tibialis anterior is located on the front of the shin and acts as the antagonist to the calf muscles (plantarflexors). Tibialis anterior and the other dorsiflexors play an important role in the walking (gait) cycle and are responsible for two primary actions during gait, which include:
    1. The dorsiflexors are activated when contact (heel strike) is first made with the ground. As the heel hits, this group must contract eccentrically in order to allow the foot to be set down smoothly. Weakness of the dorsiflexors during this task creates the ‘foot slap’ phenomenon as the foot falls quickly and slaps the ground.
    2. The dorsiflexors are activated a second time as the foot is picked up and swung forward in preparation for a new step. These muscles must dorsiflex the ankle, so that the toes do not catch on the ground. In situations of dorsiflexor compromise, the toes may catch, which is termed ‘foot drag’, and may cause the individual to trip and become injured.
    Besides gait issues, the dorsiflexors are often implicated in more common orthopedic issues such as shin splints, tendon disorders and more severe low back cases (L4 level) that can be associated with dorsiflexor weakness and foot drop.

    I'm a drummer and tibias anterior is the main muscle for the bass drum pedal. I sit on a recliner chair so my legs are extended out with the leg rest. Then I just put my legs out and bounce my foot back and forth like I am hitting a bass pedal. I do about 100-200 in a set, but they go pretty quick. You will feel the burn.

      It's perhaps best to do the regular strength as well as endurance exercise.
      Muscular atrophy is the decrease in size and wasting of muscle tissue. Muscles that lose their nerve supply can atrophy and simply waste away. People may lose 20 to 40 percent of their muscle and, along with it, their strength as they age.

    Which is better to train the anterior and posterior tibialis, the tib bar or the tib solo?

    as a past life drummer , i can assure you that you dont need any weight on your tibialis anterior to make them strong af. just do fast up and down of the feet when in a sitting position, do it till you hit failure, i have not trained this muscle for a few years and still my densest muscle in my body by far

      But what you have to consider is that the foot pedal that you push on with your foot to hit the bass offers resistance just like a weight. You're just not looking at it as a weight.

    • @Blaowzir
      @Blaowzir 7 місяців тому

      @@poeticgeenetikstv4672 what I mean is you don't need big weight...the resistance of a pedal is surely no more than a few pounds....but the thousands of repetitions is what made my tibialis so hard...you can still hit that burn and failure without the pedals. just try it for 5 minutes straight following the tempo of a song.

      Look into fast twitch vs slow twitch muscle fibres.
      If what you said was true, runners would be as strong as powerlifters.

      @@damoncallis8063 i dont see big muscles as necessarily strong, of course they are better than no muscle at all, but they are not a definite representation of what people can lift ( by that i mean ive seen small guys lift big weights and big guys struggle with things you would think they would have ease with) I dont want to put everyone in the same basket but runners will be strong in the legs because they trained them so much (we could make a distinction in between marathon runners and field track runners which are totally not the same) they wont be as strong as a powerlifter who only trains to lift bigger weights but as you mentioned different types of muscle fibers have different results, to me having endurance is a type of strong. another great example of training quantities over big numbers would be a blacksmith, these dudes are incredibly strong, I mean ridiculously strong. In an arm-wrestle, i pity the opponent against him. Ive seen huge jacked guys lose to blacksmiths who were not having a sweat during the match.

    I've read walking on your heels is another way of exercising your tibialis anterior. How do you feel about that, is it effective, or a fluke?

    Can you pls do a video for tibialis posterior..... whenever i start running the pain comes again. It would be very useful if you could show some tibialis posterior exercise because there no specific video on it... Anterior strengthening videos are easily found
