  • Ford Super Duty pickups have become notorious for dripping oil. 7.3 Powerstroke common oil leaks are especially well known throughout the diesel community. Many of the more common oil leaks are the result of poor maintenance and outright neglect over time. However, just as many 7.3 oil leaks are due to inherent manufacturer design and component choices. Decisions that require preventative maintenance and parts replacement over time. Wade goes over some of the common 7.3L oil leak areas in this video and explains why they happen. Careful though - some of the more common 7.3 oil leaks turn out to be fuel leaks. Leaking diesel that runs through the engine valley and down the back of the motor. On the way, that fuel collects dirt and oil from the valley. Then it runs out the valley drain hole and down the rear of the engine, making it appear to be an oil leak.
Watch us show you how to identify common areas where 7.3L Powerstroke leak oil.

Yup had black liquid dripping from my 7.3 off the start and it was actually fuel mixing with that oil valley crud and it was a fuel bowl leak, easy fix though

Been there done that with the turbo pedestal and that ridiculous waste gate solenoid abomination. Did the delete on that and never looked back, replaced the pedestal o-rings while I was there. Been getting oil in my coolant. I run the Evans coolant that requires you to vent your degas tank cap (pressure less system). Never had any coolant in my oil, but the coolant kept getting worse and worse so I decided to pull my oil cooler on my 2000 F250 (101K milage). No external leakage visible. The blue o-rings were flat, but still rather flexible. The black o-rings were flat, but still flexible. The gaskets between the block and cooler look good so I am assuming the 20 year old flat, but still pliable o-rings have been allowing the cross contamination. I can't think of any other way this could happen. Care to comment. Great video. I love my 7.3. Bought it brand new and have done quite a few mods on it. Mostly correcting some of the Ford OEM problems. Not many miles for a 2000. Still strong and looks good and I want to take care of it and run it till my legs fall off. I think it will out last me.

I have a 2003 F250 7.3 with 348k miles. Burned 2 gallons of oil out the tail pipe after 40 miles on a cold start then used not even 2 qts to go another 95 miles. 40 of that were another cold start drive the next day. I had replaced all the injectors Orings 40k miles ago when I did the cups. Recently did the turbo pedestal when the oil burning started.

For anybody desperately searching these comments as I was...noticed that I had started getting a good bit of accumulation around my rear main when I was under the truck for an oil change. Thought it was starting to seep but I found a trail coming from the top of the motor that was running down my oil pan. Wiped it and panicked- it was runny and green Long story short, combine Hot Shot's stiction eliminator residual in the valley with a fuel line leak and you'll have a near heart-attack experience thinking that you're somehow getting coolant dripping down the back of your motor (for anyone who doesn't know, the Hot Shot's is an alien-green oil additive and yes you should be using it every oil change).

Great video. I inherited 2000 F-350. I have taken it to 2 different mechanics. The first wanted $9000 to do a total reseal kit. The second said they don't even touch leaks on 7.3s anymore due to leaks popping up after fixing active leaks. He says the mileage is too high and suggested a rebuilt engine swap to the tune of $13000 for the engine. I do not know a lot about working on vehicles. But I will learn if it keeps from spending thousands unnecessarily. How do I get to the valley to look a d see if there are leaks?
    Thanks, clueless woman

Is it coming from the front or the back of the motor? Are you sure its oil or could it be fuel? IF its at the back, suspect turbo pedestal. If its at the front, suspect the HPOP lines or fittings. Make sure its not a fuel leak coming from the fuel bowl.

  • @MostlyPeacefulCombatVet

Where have I had a leak on my 7.3?
    The answer is YUP!
I really miss my old 7.3's! Gutless turds, but a few grand and you can run like a stock 6.7ish! Lol! If I could have all of the money back I spent just getting into the lower 600's on my 01, I'd be able to take another all inclusive, and guided hunt trip in Montana.
But they were bad to the bone back then. To me.
I really kick myself in the arse selling my 96. It was pretty tall, pretty slow, and rode pretty well like a log wagon.... But I put alot of time and $ in that truck making her Purdy Smexy.
    96 CCSB F350 4x4 zf swap truck.
The 01 was also an F350 CCSB 4x both trucks were white.
I had hpop, ipr, icp, pedestal o rings, cps, valve cover harness, GPR, glow plug themselves, and fuel bowl issues on both trucks that I can remember for certain. And a weird neutral safety issue on the 96 that made it sound like a pulling tractor. Along with a starter twice. Dipstick issues on the 01. And water pump and thermostats. Oh and clutch fan.
Still everything was an easy fix, and everything was over the course of a decade on the 96. Half decade on the 01. Pretty reliable ol' turds otherwise. Until I got PMS (powerstroke mod syndrome) Do NOT push your 7.3 past 500 whp maybe 550 (if you don't beat on it) on PMR's though! Unless you have good luck and some extra time and $ hanging out somewhere. Just throwing that out there. 😂
    good times.
Thanks for the video Wade! 👍🇺🇸

It could be from the turbo pedestal, the HPOP could be leaking, and you still could have a line leaking. If the oil is pooling in the intake and running down the drain hole, then the leak has to be in the engine valley somewhere.

That’s probably why the crossover was dry. Never knew we were out till I pulled the dipstick the other day once I was able to go back out. Hpop had maybe a quarter inch of oil. I’m kinda interested in if thats the only issue causing complete oil loss. Even our oil cooler puking oil didn’t do that once the orings went.

    Hello,
I had a leak in the valley on my way home from Oregon to Illinois, and it was in the engine valley directly, where the IPR sensor is, the tin small nut had come off and the truck was losing pressure n stalling out from stop-to-go in low gear. That was a big leak.
Now there's a small and quite slow leak and there's oil in the valley again, but the nut on the IBR sensor is tight on there, so I can't tell or see where the leak is coming from otherwise.
    Any ideas or insight?

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  8 місяців тому

It's hard because there are a lot of leak point around there which we explained here. First have to make sure that it is 100% oil. Could be fuel that gets black because of the grime that’s in the valley. IF its oil, I would suspect the lines or fittings for those lines at the head.

    • @alsalamone9437

It smells when the turbo is engaged going up a big hill hauling or something.
I don't see a leak coming from thy hoses as far as I could see whatsoever.
The gas tanks have leaked but I fixed that already, and it doesn't now, and a I'm not sure if the fuel lines in the valley are leaking... up to question... I'll have to double check.

He said it has an oil leak, but not sure from where. How much would someone estimate it would cost to get an oil leak fixed in general? I know it depends on where the leaks is and if there are more than 1 leak, but the guy said he is negotiable on price so we thought about asking for some $$ off the price to cover taking it to a shop to get the oil leak fixed. Just wondering what kind of price range we should be looking at.

I currently have a leak I can not find! 2002 F250 7.3 Powerstroke. Pulled the turbo and pedestal to replace the leaking up pipes and collector. No oil at the back top of motor or bell housing.EBVP was deleted some time ago so not in play here. Originally felt like the rear passenger side High Pressure Oil Rail Plug was leaking as oil appears to be coming down on the passenger side from above and getting oil on the starter at the transmission adapter plate. I replaced the Turbo O-rings, pedestal o-rings and rear passenger side oil rail plug and used the correct Loctite 277. I did the CVD (Check Valve Delete) and new Viton fuel fittings on front and back. No oil in the valley either. I also can verify there is no oil coming from the top rear plug at the head in front of the High Pressure Oil Rail Plug. Literally looks as if oil is leaking at the head and block?? I cant completely rule out the passenger side rear fuel feed but not likly as the front driver side was installed at the same time and same way and it is dry as a bone. No smell of fuel in the leak remains either. I changed oil and before the leak was dark now the leak is fresh and looks golden like fresh oil. Any thoughts please??
