Stretches for arthritis can be tempting because the muscles are tight and you are trying to relieve the tightness! This may not be the best way though... Muscles are tight for a reason, likely muscle weakness. This is common in arthritis because pain can also impact the way our muscles work. Constantly stretching tight muscles likely will not help to make long term change when it comes to decreasing tightness, it will likely come right back.
Instead of stretching for arthritis, one of the best things you can do is movement! Movement is crucial for arthritis relief and loosening tight muscles. It can be more beneficial than stretching. When we get our muscles and joints strong, muscles usually don't have to be tight! Join Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and arthritis specialist with Keep the Adventure Alive as she shows you what you should do instead when it comes to tight muscles. When relieving muscle tightness, there is a lot more to it than just stretching.
When it comes to stretching, it's not inherently bad. But you can make more progress on your range of motion by adding in some movement!

Hi Alyssa , you are absolutely 100% correct . Your core message about full range of motion and strength through that range is misunderstood by so many people . Keep up the great work you are doing . Thanks from an Aussie fan.

I saved this so I can listen again. The doctor gave me stretching exercises to do. It helped for a short time. Now stretching makes arthritis in my back worse.

Thank you so much for this information. I have hip OA and for 2 years I have tried every stretch there is and not a single one has helped one bit. In fact, some made it considerably worse. I'm going to give your exercises a shot.

I like your videos but I wish they were less wordy. This one is 6:49 minutes long and I think you could easily get your point across more effectively in 3-4 minutes. Don’t take it personally. This is my number one complaint with most UA-cam exercise videos. Too much talking. Just get to the point.
