Hey Buckin, not shure if you ran the calibration completely. If you don‘t your saw definitely needs a lot of constant cutting for self calibration . The calibration procedure as supposed by stihl is as following. 1. Let the saw warm up (doesn’t matter if it idles or revs up) 2.stop the saw. 3. start the saw with closed chainbrake. 4. let it idle with closed chainbrake more than 30s and less than 60s. 5. release the chainbrake and give and hold full throttle. The saw will run automatically for about 15s in a mid speed. It then will step up to full speed by it self. You have to keep full throttle and the saw will run on full speed for about 5-10s and then automatically go back to middle speed. This tells you that the calibration is finished. After that the saw will directly run with the correct setup. Hope this will help. Stay safe and go on with your great spirit. Greetings from Germany. Benjamin
Hey brother does this include all stills or just the 500 because I have a baby one the stihl MS 211c shoal I run these steps to calibrate??? Thanks for the advice
211c does not have the M-Tronic system for self-calibration. The smallest saw with M-Tronic is the MS241. It is included in all professional saws from stihl. Greetings and stay safe.
It always takes a lot of courage to tell everyone you were wrong after fighting with them. I’m glad you took everybody’s advise and learned how this new technology works.

This is a great day for your channel, for RipSaw, for Stihl, and for your subscribers. With all of your experience, you are still man enough to take advice from other people about how to get the most out of a saw that you were not familiar with. I’m really glad that you are seeing value in this saw. Also, I realize that you have always given tips in your videos, but it seems like you’re focusing even more now on trying to teach people of all experience levels, thank you so much! A lot of people NEVER admit that they may have been wrong about something - kudos to you buddy. AND - you don’t talk too much - the interjections are always either informational or entertaining - or both! Don’t stop😊 8:35 The teeth won’t touch the wood? I do pay attention to your videos, but I don’t quite understand it all YET.
Intellectual honesty is what the world needs more of. Like Richard Feynman (Physicist) said - "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself-and you are the easiest person to fool. So you have to be very careful about that." (speaking about what makes a good scientist but I think it's a good rule for everyone to consider). I really appreciate that you are open and honest when you feel you've made a mistake instead of being quiet about it. I don't know much about the engines themselves, so it's helpful and appreciated to have this ongoing conversation. I might even get an older saw at some point to go with my 462 M-tronic, as you've got me more interested in tuning.
Thanks for the videos buckin! You and tinman have taught me so much about sharpening chains, even a stock saw can blow the mind of someone who’s not used to it. I love seeing the looks on people’s face when I tell them to let the saw do the work and it just gets it done. Glad you finally came around to a stihl, and I might be on the lookout for a 372xp now!
I see the rakes burn. We have heavy hardwoods down here. They will blue if you let them get hot. I cut the rakes hard, when I know for sure I am the only one to start the saw. I can use the saw to pick and pile firewood. You do need to keep your leg out of the way. Now Long bars. Yeh - a cane. Have used 2 for a few years at times. Having a long bar on my saw makes sense. Thank you so much for that tip!
I'm glad you figured it out. Finally. Last year was all new to me. I had sold all my carb saws and moved into the M-Tronics and the computer 500i. I had to learn about entirely new ways to operate them properly. Some frustrations and experimenting and it is now all good. With the 500i, I witnessed it twice pull itself thru a slowly closing cut, that would have pinched another saw. Its got that kind of power, to pull itself thru a pinching situation. Amazing!
You are one of the best and most experienced lumberjacks in the world. I'm glad you're not so dogged and can change your mind from time to time. Stay as you are, I appreciate you for that!
I have a 500 and you are absolutely correct about the rakers on it. It love's a hungry chain for sure. When mine is in smaller wood I just don't squeeze the trigger as much. Clears it up.
Had to wait 8 months to get our 500i. All stock. Love it. Didn’t know about the calibration… does one have to do that each time you shut it off? Thanks for the videos…I always learn a lot. The moment we say we know it all, is the moment we start to duress into our own little bubble…so much truth out there. Bless you Brother.
To high raker I think will not let you cut into the wood. They’ll make dust and slow cutting. Make you push harder and then the bar and gain will heat up
Thank you so much for teaching me how to listen to the saw to know what it is doing. Your knowledge is a gift that keeps on giving.... Thank you my friend. Get healthy 👊👊👊
I own various Stihl power equipment. One thing I found with them other than they make awesome products is they need to be loaded to perform peak. It seems like they engineered them to be that way. Even my grass trimmer is that way. Simply runs ands performs better under a heavy load. High rpm of course. I think that’s how the valved two stroke is designed to be used. Full power and fully loaded. Seems that its where they really shine and make that impressive power we want. So, I would suggest not to over buy on a big saw or any piece of power equipment made like this if you really only need to (baby) it to do the majority of your work. Buy a little smaller and push that sucker. It will perform well
You’re not alone. Bought a Husky many years ago, with auto-tune. Wouldn’t run right, no shop in the Magic Valley of Southern Idaho could help. Returned it and went with a 372 x-torque. Just recently am seeing videos of how to initialize the tuning. Wasn’t on You Tube back then, thank you for sharing in your experience. Have learned so much from you and others.
Buck your one sick puppy, u been snorting way too many exhaust fumes but I love it!!! Ur addicted to stihl an husky dope an u gotta luv that too!!! Buck I just watched ur video from 2 yrs ago about getting clean and yes I have issues but your gonna help me and u don't even know me, THANK YOU!!
Hi Buckin, I'm glade your getting thinks figured out with your 500i. Some patience is required to learn these newer electronic saw's as you have found. The new stihl's and the 5 series huskies are very similar, they need the calibration done to get the full potential out of the saws. I think both Stihl and Husky dropped the ball when it comes to explaining the need for the calibration procedures and how to go about doing it successfully on the new saws. I think a video with both you and Donny Walker giving a how to properly calibrate tutorial would be a great contribution to saw community. I hope the shoulder continues to heal for you.
I cut a lot of medium small lodgepole pine firewood. Lots of buckin not too much falling. 28' bar and LOW rakers are what I like. I want the ol 440 to pull on me!
I know it sounds like four stroking ( too rich) but it's imply a rev limiter . With enough load or with a sharp chain and rakers set correctly it's gone. But hold wide open with it out of the wood and it will always be there .
My rakers turn brown from friction if I leave them too high. If they're set right they seem to come out pretty clean. Not like I just filed them, but they're clean. I put up maybe 20 cords a year though, so I don't have the 10,000+ hours of experience of all you pros! I still don't trust the 500i, I'm gonna keep limping along with my 390xp and 555 for a few more years. Someday I'll make the jump to the fuel injected or big autotune saws! Cheers, big dog. Keep making the great videos.
I am glad you made this video. I stopped watching your channel because of your previous comments on the 500 and i learned alot from you. Well this made a big difference.
Standing up and bucking grunt is good but high cutting speeds is WHAT makes the husky shine. The stihl is a dawg down and growl through saw. Both incredible saw makers
I’ve had my 500i for 3 years now, she’s always served me well. I run a 32” Stihl light bar and typically use skip tooth semi chisel chain ( our wood here is dirty and I like less teeth to file ) I’ve been sinking my dogs into 36”-40” diameter sitka spruce, processing firewood. It just jams. Thanks for your insight here. Very helpful with the information on loading up the saw.. kudos
I am in the market for a fuel injected saw. I appreciate your open and honest review. I am a hobbies with trees on my property in Minnesota. I will hopefully find a dealer that has one that I can try first.
It was a pleasure watching this positive video review!! I have had a 500i from the very first shipment to the states that I waited years for. A dream saw . It does my heart good seeing a saw master enjoy this saw I love!!
I have two Chinese FarmTech saws John Cutters and they can and do preform equal or better than saws costing more than triple the price. Depends on who and how you use a saw.
Good morning Buckin Billy Ray. Fantastic. A saw with a personality... A GOOD ONE. Thank you 😊 for this BBR experience. Be watching 👀 for your next video. I'm so glad you feel like being outside running your power saws. Love you and love to all.
Great to see you happy Buckin. I feel you have been in a darker place lately? Anyhow, that saw is crazy how it needs a load to sound good. Love you bud. You make my day.
hey I'm from Poland, I really like your videos and especially those about modifying chainsaws It's a pity that in Poland no one does such tutorials and does not give advice on how to improve the chainsaw to have more power and the like. Greetings
Hey Buckin, I noticed the same thing with my ms462c-m. It 4 strokes on a lite load. So today I recalibrate and I put took my 7 pin rim off and put a 8 pin on. Saw bucks the small stuff and limbs great now.
My journey with 500i wasn't enjoyable. Buddy purchased saw of necessity for me. I didnt know a thing about them. 8 months saw went down. For the next10 months three stihl shops and sent to parent company twice. Saw would start run at shop next morning wouldn't run. Finally figured at sensor was bad. Saw runs good now with bigger bars best. Didn't know nothing about calibrating until i just watched your video. Thanks
It’s seems like a good little saw but I still like my old vintage saws! There’s nothing like getting your lil screwdriver out and tuning the old girl up, it’s as if your more connected to the process and your saw. Although I do like the husqvarna 592 and wouldn’t mind a walkerized version as I never got on with the stihl 660 and sold it after a month.
I guess after being sent to a pro shop and putting all kinds of aftermarket parts on, the Stihl does cut ok. The last Husqvarna I bought in 2006 still kicks balls and the only thing iv ever changed was the chain.
Good on you for the honest, calculated chat. I think your issue with the way the 500i behaves in small wood could be over looked totally because it simply is a big saw designed for big wood. Is just not designed for that task I don’t think. I cut allot of firewood, have 35cc/16”, 56cc/20” & 79cc/28” saws and I find it far easier to use the appropriate size saws for the size of the wood. Particularly using the small saws in small wood as is so much lighter and less fatiguing. I realise you prefer to stand up and Buck with a big saw but maybe also consider that’s not what that animal was intended for perhaps? Let it be what it is, if it wasn’t good in big wood then yeah, I’d say it was junk!
I came into the 500i a little differently. A few respected friends, including a Wildland firefighter, spoke very highly of it. When I bought it, the saw guy at CAL ranch told me she needed to sit and idle for a few minutes, in order to warm up and calibrate. The only criticism of my beloved saw is that using the compression release just made the saw exponentially harder to start. I don't use it and she starts just like she should.
Great video Buckin crow dose not taste good but but in small amounts its good for a guy it takes a better man to admit when he is wrong have a great day be safe.
Mr Buckin been cutting firewood all my days 54 yrs old My nephew runs Stihl and I used them a little but I didn’t like them right off I run echo I love those saws am I wrong and stuck in my ways r should I try Stihl more Man I love those echo to me better quality saw guess my question to you is echo better to you than what you running on video love y’all and all the vlogs
Glad you like it😀...but I still prefer something I can work on and adjust myself, maybe I'm even more old-school than you are..love those old 10-series Macs!..and the old Pioneers. As far as "modern" saws go, I think the pinnacle was the late-1980's through the 1990's, even into the early 2000's, right before strato, then auto-tune, hit. the (non-x torq) 372xp, 346xp, 262xp, 266, 288, MS 440/044, MS 460, 660 Stihls..in the smaller saws, the Stihl 020T/MS 200T and Husqvarna 242XP will never be topped....even when doing basic repairs and maintenance, I prefer simple..whether it's a car, pickup or a chainsaw...I don't care for all the extra wiring and plumbing on the new ones...
I've got scars on almost every finger from my chains. I swear, shops and most people in my area don't know how to sharpen a chain. Also, my 661 will do the same thing, 4 stroking a lot, when it doesn't sit at idle for a bit before cutting. It's my go-to saw, but the 881 gives it a run for its money as my favorite. That thing is a beast.
Gosh doggit Buckin, now that you admit making a mistake I guess that leaves me as the only perfect one left. Seriously though that was sure mighty kind of you to stand up and set the record straight. Love you my brother and it was so good to see you over at root rot Ronnie's!
I have a stihl 661 which is a 90 cc mtronic saw and it chews through hardwood logs with a 32" lightweight bar and round ground chain I love running it when I can but it is on the heavy side for what I do any more
Appreciate yr video. Im trying 2 decide between 500i & 661. Money is not an issue for one over the other. It's not going to make me a living either. I just want a new straight forward multipurpose saw for mostly under 32" diameter trees. Weight to power/performance ratio absolutely matters because I have a stihl ms170 for smaller wood/limbs under 16" or in a bucket. Be blessed.
I am an in the same age group as you are, I have figured out that I now have to read the manual when I buy something new because the technology has changed so much from what it was when I was a young man. Where I live big wood and big saws like that 500 are kind of rare, when a person does have one it is generally saved for bigger wood, and they use a smaller saw for the smaller stuff.
Ripsaw did a nice job on that 500, it sounds good! When you speak truth your not going to make everyone happy. I appreciate you pointing out that 4 stroking till pressure is applied. You just cant be doing that if your running a saw for 6 hours or more a day. I still am hesitant in buying into these modern day wired up injected saws. My old Huskys have done me well and still make me smile when they're sharp and running true!
Traditional carbs (especially the modern ones) tend to be a fail point. Curious if fuel injection results in increased reliability, or if it's a new high-tech fail point...
I’ve always let my saw warm for a while I’m sure it’s better for these small high compression motors,so now there’s a special procedure to do for that doesn’t surprise me.
Rakers are high the chips won't fly lol. Lots of respect for ya Billy thanks for being yourself. I love my old trucks as well an like you I treat em with respect an they will carry you an your load forever. Later dude
💪... you are now on the right way, healing is not only a physical process but a mental one. Interessting thing you mentioned with the rakers, factory default didn't work for me either. Thanks and keep going.👍
Hey Buckin, I run a couple 500's at work. The 500's only like full throttle and idle. If you do any half throttle right before your cut it will go rich. Let it idle down after going half throttle and it's fine right after that. Love and kindness from Kelowna BC
That's good to know about the calibration I did not know about that either thank you for posting this video. I did not understand the calibrating thing until I seen this video.
Stay safe and go on with your great spirit.

hey I'm from Poland, I really like your videos and especially those about modifying chainsaws
It's a pity that in Poland no one does such tutorials and does not give advice on how to improve the chainsaw to have more power and the like. Greetings
Welcome , enjoy
hello friend ,, its all in the filin' a little ' pipe does wonders (muffler)
Hey Buckin, I noticed the same thing with my ms462c-m. It 4 strokes on a lite load. So today I recalibrate and I put took my 7 pin rim off and put a 8 pin on. Saw bucks the small stuff and limbs great now.
I try an 8
Good on ya Buckin - always nice to see a person admit when they are wrong or when they have changed their mind! Thanks for sharing your videos.
Great video! It takes courage to admit you are wrong. I wish I could afford a 500i.
Takes a real man to admit when he makes a blunder, and that's how ya know Billy is one of the real ones! Love your videos man.
Thanks
Appreciate you Billy, appreciate your videos. Stay Healthy, Stay Safe. God bless you and your family from Iowa
will do
It’s seems like a good little saw but I still like my old vintage saws! There’s nothing like getting your lil screwdriver out and tuning the old girl up, it’s as if your more connected to the process and your saw.
Although I do like the husqvarna 592 and wouldn’t mind a walkerized version as I never got on with the stihl 660 and sold it after a month.
Love that sweet old ford I'm rebuilding a 1972 f350
Thanks for your channel Buckin !🌲🌲🌲
I almost had to turn my headphones down. He said listen to the saw so I was paying close attention then whammo. LOL.
That saw would be nice to try...
For the price of one of those I can build 3-4 372's. Glad to see your happier with it now
Great video Buckin crow dose not taste good but but in small amounts its good for a guy it takes a better man to admit when he is wrong have a great day be safe.
She won't cutty!! Loving my journey with you so far! You've brought me to a much better place, I Promise you! And I thank you!! Greatly!
wow , this is more important to me than any power saw talk .. thx friend , love wins
❤💪🙏
Let yer machine warm up....
Glad to see the wing is comin around.
Keep on truckin Buckin
Be blessed.
The MS170 has the highest power to weigh ratio of all Stihl saws. I sold mine for a pair of new boots. I am stupid.
Australia
Always love your great attitude. Keep up the good work!
Your comment on saving energy is a key take away. As we get older, we need to be smarter.
indeed brother.. " stand up and buck"
If you pull the recoil out slowly all the way and let go,...it will bump start the saw. Save your elbow buckin! Give it a try.
Does it have to be warm to start like that?
you bin watchin' Nick pixels joke Videos again ?
I am an in the same age group as you are, I have figured out that I now have to read the manual when I buy something new because the technology has changed so much from what it was when I was a young man.
Where I live big wood and big saws like that 500 are kind of rare, when a person does have one it is generally saved for bigger wood, and they use a smaller saw for the smaller stuff.
hahahahaha
I’m glad you stepped away from the 500 when you got frustrated with it. Re visited another day. & it does sound great. I can hear the difference
Buckin your a good man . And also a good family man . I'm a sthil guy , and I still love supporting you and love watching your videos !
Right on
Damn, I’m getting the itch to go pickup a 500 now. I’ve never bought a new saw, always gone old and used. Very tempting…
I bought a 500i because of you way back when. It’s a beast and always will be!
Theres the fella I was lookin for
"I've got a back that has had a few encounters...." made me laugh knowing about some of the injuries you have sustained in your life! Stay safe!
You’re an amazing Dude Billy Ray. Gotta say, if you have to eat crow, wear your Poulan hat.
love that blue Ford- beauty!!
Thanks for all the tips I am still working on the filing
Rakers are high the chips won't fly lol. Lots of respect for ya Billy thanks for being yourself. I love my old trucks as well an like you I treat em with respect an they will carry you an your load forever. Later dude
later
💪... you are now on the right way, healing is not only a physical process but a mental one. Interessting thing you mentioned with the rakers, factory default didn't work for me either. Thanks and keep going.👍
its a thing
Hope all is well buckin have a good weekend sir
If rakers are high, you're not gonna get the chips to fly!! Take care Buckin and God bless!!
haahahha
Hey Buckin, I run a couple 500's at work. The 500's only like full throttle and idle. If you do any half throttle right before your cut it will go rich. Let it idle down after going half throttle and it's fine right after that.
Love and kindness from Kelowna BC
makes sense it did that to me ,, thx
Now I don’t know if I want to save up for the ripsaw 500i or for a echo 7310 from Donny Walker. Be safe and be kind. 👍👍👍
That's good to know about the calibration I did not know about that either thank you for posting this video. I did not understand the calibrating thing until I seen this video.
Billy, I would have made the same mistake as you did with that saw. I wouldn't have known about letting it idle to calibrate it.
