I love these videos. Texas is the greatest place on earth. I came here 24 years ago when I was in my mid 20's in a $300 car and never looked back. There is so much beauty here and I get so emotional thinking of how blessed I am to call Texas home. God Bless you and God bless our great state.

Palo duro canyon, is the most beautiful and peaceful places I've been. The calm and quietness is a great place to be reborn. If you don't come out of there with a whole new perspective on life you did something wrong. I was there at 108 and it was wonderful. Comfortable and my lungs were filled with spiritual air..

Thanks for sharing your trip to Palo Duro. We love that park. My grandfather was with CCCs that helped build the park. He was in one of the veterans working there. Before going there he helped build the park at Hereford.

RV Texas Y'all he really did he was born in 1899 and had seen so much. We took my mother to visit the canyon a couple of times before her passing. She remembered going out to the camp to visit her dad. Sometimes they would take a bus to the canyon midweek for the wives and children of the workers to visit. All that is left of the camp is the chimney we have a picture of her next to it on one of our visits.

just took a drive thru there 3 weeks ago. it was pretty. have been in and out of texas all my life and never had time to see it. always in a hurry. Took the time this month as I'm now retired and had the time. Saw a few small deer. Be sure to caution folks about the rattlesnakes. they got quiet a few. hike with a stick. enjoy

Wonderful place to visit. We were there in 2017, but camped in a park nearer Amarillo (big mistake). I still have a pic on my phone of that caged thermometer, that day reading 114 degrees. What a great place, we explored two trails early in the morning two different days. Can't wait to get back, hopefully in the spring this year. Thanks for all your wonderful videos and travels.

I really like the video. You provided a lot of great information. My only complain is the music, it is too loud and distracting. You do not need to have music all through the video. If you put music during transition, but not while you speak then it will be a wonderful video.

In regards to your wondering about the partial built wooden building... I am not sure the purpose unless to show what the CCC boys may have lived there or as you said a painting group. But, point of fact, I worked at Palo Duro for over 10 years and I worked with a man who was one of the CCC boys that built the park. He said that they lived down there where that partial cabin was. There used to be a bath house from the CCC times. When I worked there it was falling down, and the last time I was through PD, was told some boys burned what was left of the building.
The hike you took that you speak about the restroom and the grill standing in the middle of no where was a large day use area called Cottonwood Day Use. Sometime not long after I left working there a huge flood came in and destroyed the area. There were huge beautiful cottonwood trees shading the area. It was sad to see it lost.

I believe you said that you had driven your toad down the steep entrance instead of towing it. Would it have been too difficult to have had it attached to the motorhome on the way in? Love your videos. Hoping to be able to visit Texas one day.

We usually mention it at the very end but if we forgot we are sorry about that. This was when we were first starting to do videos and were unpolished. We are going back to some of these early video parks and redoing them. Thanks from watching!

RV Texas Y'all You are correct when we tell people how far something is in hours. I had to reposse a horse from Ohio. The man said that he would have it dropped off after he went to El Paso. I told him it was 9 hours away. He didn't believe me!

We camped at the Juniper campground twice in Palo Duro SP, one of our favorite places. First time we had no cell service or internet but second time we we're able to get three bars of Verizon service with the aid of our newly acquired Weboost Cellular Booster, good enough to stream UA-cam and make phone calls. Loved your narrative but the music loop played on too long.

You are correct; we couldn't create this road in six months today (not even with the machinery we have that wasn't available back then). The reason (and apologies for the cynicism in advance) is because of contracts, unions, work ethics, companies intentionally stretching a project out rather than delivering results that exceed expectations, weather delays (because back then they worked THROUGH the weather; today we couldn't possibly work in the rain God forbid). Give me enough time and I could come up with another twenty reasons that would NEVER have been considered good excuses back in those days - but today are commonplace explanations for why nothing gets done. It is so sad and I feel like such a negative nelly for even making this comment but truthfully, am I wrong? I know life was hard in those days and there was a lot of room for improvement but things did get done. Today so many have become so mired in the "what's in it for me" attitude that fewer and fewer understand that sometimes we just need to set aside the personal agendas for the bigger picture. I suspect that will not change until we experience another great depression and/or huge event that pushes the majority outside of their "the world revolves around me" way of living their lives.
Re "Hard Wood" and the mesquite trees, etc. Oh MY! That takes me back to my youth growing up in New Mexico where mesquite trees are very abundant. Dad would always have us kids haul mesquite back to the truck when we would go camping or on hunting trips. He would use the wood for a number of projects, from making pistol grips, rifle stock (rarely but I think he did find a piece large enough to make ONE once), knife handles and other pieces of art to simply using to smoke with while grilling. Dad was a dyed in the wool old-fashioned man who saw a need, figured out how to fill it - and filled it.
Re "Shal-A-Ko" ----- yeah, that definitely looks like a grave site. If it is then the park is responsible for preserving it as it originally existed. I'm kind of surprised it is so well preserved and not covered in graffiti but then again, this is Texas. We have a problem with graffiti in the larger cities but in places such as this perhaps we're still protective enough of our natural treasures that those thinking about marking up a grave like this even think twice. (It infuriates me when I see where people have painted or signed their names in permanent marker on beautiful sites I've visited. I'd like to have been there when each of them went to sign their name, to bitch slap 'em and tell them "we DON'T CARE if you were ever here you idiot. What have you accomplished? Why should I know your name?")
Ummmmmm, I might have become that old curmudgeon that people talk about. You know, the grumpy old man sitting on the front porch in the house on the corner. ROFL!!!!
It doesn't help that I'm still sick, running a temp with a sore throat. I TRULY get crabby and whiny when I'm not feeling well. hahahahaha

What loop is the prettiest, did you like the mesquite best
Hi Randy. We LOVED the Mesquite Loop. The Hackberry Loop also looked nice (30 amp electric), the Juniper Loop opened after our visit but we hear folks like it. We would definitely stay in Mesquite again.
Great video but, what you pointed out as the lighthouse was incorrect. The structure you showed was only about the half way point on the trail to the light house, the real one is MUCH larger and more impressive
You are right. Thanks for the clarification. This is one of our older videos. We hiked the Light House Trail on a future visit and recognized our mistake. We'll have another Palo Duro Canyon video coming out in the future that shows the real lighthouse.
What is the entrance grade like pulling a trailer. And how is the grade leaving
Hi Pete! To enter or leave the park, you travel a pretty decent grade. But the shortish switchback design makes it easier to drive. And since it's in the park, speed limits are low. It's a bit daunting the first time, but you have a beautiful view of the canyon as you enter. We did fine with our 35' motorhome (that we had at the time), and we didn't see anyone have an issue. You just have to take it slow.
Being from Houston area, and, knowing that the winter in the panhandle can be brutal, is it the same conditions here?
We haven’t been during the winter, but we expect that it is.
Is the train still there I believe it was called the mule train.
Unfortunately, that train is long gone. I remember as a kid, in the 80's, riding that train thru the canyon. So many great memories!
They have added a zipline and are constructing new camping areas.
There is also guided tours on off-road vehicles. They take you down a trail in a military style Hummer.
You need to do something about the lens hood that you are using that keeps cutting into the corners of the picture. Other than that, it is a pretty good video, though you could probably do some editing and cut this down to about 20 minutes and it would be better.

Enjoyed this and Caprock video. One note, Palo Duro Canyon is not the second biggest canyon in the United States. Waimea Canyon in Kauai is the second biggest. Palo Duro IS the second biggest in the continental U.S.

I have a popup camper trailer. Which campground seems good for me. Bathrooms?
Any of the RV campgrounds would be good for you; each camping loop has its own bathrooms. With a popup camper, you could easily fit in any of the sites, and every RV loop offers 30 amp service. The Hackberry camping loop is the one in the video where we saw the turkeys. We stayed in the Mesquite camping loop. We would recommend either of those. The Juniper camping loop opened after our stay there, but the photos we've seen look nice. Our least favorite would be the Sagebrush loop. It is close to the amphitheater and Trading Post, but we liked the other loops better when we drove through. Many of the Sagebrush sites are a lot closer together than the other loops.
