Thanks for posting, I first rode this train on my way to school at Lovedale in 1946, and for the following five years. Many great memories,,,,,,,,,,,thanks..
my Brother ashokumar.. and i ..jaykumar went to school..st joseph's in coonoor...and we travelled daily to school from Aravankadu station.. full family with my two sisters..travelled to ooty in this train... great nostalgia...of..1956..period.. i m happy that southern railway is maintaining this train...so well....great jo southern railway
I was in Ooty in 1976 and noticed the thing in the tracks - I presumed it was to stop the train from slipping backwards. I've been told since, that it's there to offer extra momentum to the train if needed. I don't know how it works but it's a fantastic idea.
Another gem. The BBC did a series about Indian mountain railways recently including this and the Darjeeling. It went into the history of the lines and blathered on about the people who work on and live alongside it. All very well but frankly, when it comes to the train footage I think I prefer yours- excellent stuff.
I worked on these Engines in the Coonoor Loco shed! those were great days I was there from 1978 to 1983I in the 'Side rod' squad. Now for the last 28 years I have lived in Sydney Australia...I do miss those days and those trains!
Something must be wrong here, as I came across this video by chance and it was very interesting. Thanks to who posted it. Nothing offensive or sad and no swearing, but wonderful photography and of good quality. Thank you

This video is so nice with the steam engine, pulling the train along this amazing landscape passing through the cool forests. Really a good footage I love this type of beautiful sceneries. Appreciations from your closest neighbour Srilanka.
Liked the video at 8:00 mins. The old steam loco, slowly getting replaced by a YDM diesel loco. Especially the part where the steam loco, slowly moves out of our view (as she is standing on a curve)

Please read my comment properly, did I ever say this railway line is from 20th century??, this entire railway stretch have completed more then 100 years yet our Railway have kept it in excellent condition - I am appreciating that effort of our Railway. On the modern Delhi Metro of India has been certified by the UN as the first metro rail system in the world to get “carbon credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions” helping in reducing pollution levels in the city by 630,000 tons every year
Mark this is a UNESCO world heritage railway line, India is still running the train to showcase our younger generation about our heritage - because this railway makes every year loss but still Indian railway keeps them on track only to save this beauty from extinct...India posses one of the most modern metro systems so don't write about something without knowing the story behind it...
Look on the green diesel (diesel-electric) locomotive, it`s made in czechoslovakia ( č k d ). Lot of these maschines youcan see in czech and slovak republic. Big power, high quality and famous sound.
Great video The steam loco seemed to have a saddle re ank added on top of rhe boiler behind the steam dome. Am I correct in thinking rhe rack an ponion system is independent of the driven wheels, looked like two set of valve gear. Thec deselc that took over very much sounds like a sulzer diesel
Fascinating equipment! This 0-8-4st locomotive has more water capacity than an otherwise-comparable Baldwin, with coal bunkerage in the same location as on U. S. tank locomotives. What rail company does "SLR" designate?

The steam loco looks like the recently converted oil fired loco. Earlier versions ran on coal and went into disrepair after years of use

I remember it was narrow gauge long back. It was converted to meter guage.
