  • Nancy Brophy was an unsuccessful author, but a very successful killer. She was married to Dan Brophy for many years, but when he turned up dead, maybe Nancy read too much into her own books and fantasies.

I'm only in a couple a minutes, but I wanted to say that when I was a 13 to 17 year old street kid in Portland, the culinary school would feed as many kids as they could breakfast out the back door. A lot of times it would be the only hot meal you'd get. That was back in the late eighties and now a couple a days after my fiftieth birthday I'm sad to hear that covid killed it. At a time when no one seemed to care and good memories were few and far in between, I could look for a smile and a caring word from those folks plus a good meal. They instilled in me the realization that even now I don't have much, but those who have nothing still deserve a hot meal and kindness without judgement.

I just don’t understand how that is second degree murder. Pretty premeditated to me. You drove to the mans job and killed him in cold blood. In his happy place no less. Yeah just a prosecutorial compromise to ensure conviction, either way she’s set for life and isn’t going to kill again. You don’t always charge them what they’re actually guilty of, you charge them with what you can get a conviction for.

    Hey Mike,
Thanks for talking about this story. I wish you could talk about the Jocelyn Dooley case in Louisiana. It involves the murder of her husband, riverboat casinos and her friend bribing a judge for an McGriddle before she testifies. Unfortunately, this is a true story.

I'm a writer myself and it's not a small thing to put many books together even if they are not good. But what really strikes me is that she starts off writing about, "how to kill your husband," from an empirical view, but the narrative quickly becomes personalized ("I don't like jumpsuits and orange is not my color."). That's a sign of a bad writer and a killer. A better title for her story would be, "No one kills a great chef and gets away." I think she really just wanted to see if she could get away with it...not thinking of how many video cameras there are now watching car traffic was dumb. She 70yo and didn't have the critical acclaim or life she wanted... now she does.

That was very good and helpful. Thank you. I have been following this whole trial and it eventually dawned on me, especially after watching her cross examination a 2nd time, the motive wasn't so much the money or the irritation of the hoarding, or jealousy of his popularity. It was pure egotistic - much like Hitchcock has written about (The Rope-true story) and others. And, definitely Narcissistic, altho that word is so overused today. She simply thought she was so smart figuring out the slide & barrel that I could see her fantasizing on a Portuguese Beach and gloating how she got away with it.

I forget who said those words, but perhaps you should take heed. A writer will always believe their work can be improved; that “one more pass should do it”
