To this day, I'm pretty sure my dad stopped a school shooter before he could enact what he was going to do. My dad was a teacher, and this kid had been acting weird for a couple days, and my dad pulled him into his classroom. He sat with the kid and offered to help with his homework and just talked to the kid. I even spoke to him when I was there to help my dad move something. The kid told my dad about things happening in his house, and that he had no outlet, but talking to my dad helped. After he graduated, he walked up to my dad and told him that he'd been planning to do something horrible, but that my dad bringing him into his classroom every day helped him. Last I heard, dude was running his own landscaping business.
Hell yeah, that's a really good thing. You and your dad are cool peoples. Sometimes that's all it takes to let somebody know they're not alone. Too often we see something is wrong and just don't take the time to say something. Good for you guys, that's awesome.
Maybe if more teachers like your dad took an extra couple minutes with the kid who doesn’t seem to fit in or just maybe needs to talk, there would be a lot less of these tragedies.
Couldn’t the judge have made him change his shirt? That just seems WAAAAY over the limit of what those family members should be expected to face in court.
I think he should have left it. He is a killer. He said horrific things. The stupid hand made t-shirt just glaringly shows he is a moron and a total loser who will never peak in life. It's perfect that we see him in a shirt that says what he is.
there’s another universe where he never committed the act, how he was indeed benevolent, and how he was a good man. he’ll have time to repent someday.. we all have to repeat our lives together someday…

He really is evil, the amused smile he wore in court while these poor family's were suffering is awful! Thank for sharing this story and highlighting the heroes of that day while being compassionate to the victims.
It would have taken everything I had if I was a family member not to have leaped over to where TJ Lane was sitting at in the court room I would have slapped that smug look right off of his deviant evil face 💯
I fucking lost it when you said the father died of a broken heart. That poor family did nothing to deserve this 😢 My heart goes out to all the families affected
I cried too. I imagined what it would be like if it was my own father forced to live with the fact that me or my sister had been murdered, and that just made it even worse. No father, no parent, should... 😞
im a survivor of the 1998 Westside middle school shooting & it's sad that this has just gotten worse since then. every shooting is triggering & I cant imagine how hard it was for the families of the victims having the killer acting the way he did. if hell is real I hope there is a special place there for them. RIP to all the victims & to all the victims of all these mass shootings, they need to be stopped. one was too many
Mike, i want you to know that your videos were the first i watched when i woke up in the hospital after a suicide attempt. i’d known how you ended each video, but that first one i watched, hearing your “i love you”, it was like i had only just heard it for the first time. i needed that, so so badly. thank you, Mike. here’s to almost 2 whole months of being alive 🖤
I hope you've found purpose and happiness in your life. There's always someone willing to listen. We may not know you, but we're all humans going through shit, and we care about you and your story. Be well, friend !
Oh honey, I'm sorry that you've been going through hard times. I've been there, too! For me, my struggles were driven by chronic illness, which I have now gotten to a more manageable & happy place. I get it. Please know that there are so many people who do care! Reach out & keep getting the care you need to become whole again. Xoxox!
I AM SO GLAD YOU COVERED THIS!!! This snapshot of him wearing that t-shirt and giving the finger comes up in my feed all the time but just as a short "whacky things that happened in courtrooms" I never knew the whole story.... You're the best, Mike!
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I was shocked to see Mike cover this. I didn’t think anyone would. I went to Chardon High my last two years of high school. I remember seeing the boys around the school, the three that were murdered and the fourth that has permanent paralysis due to being shot. Still can’t believe it happened at my high school. And that it’s been ten years. Rest In Peace, Demetrius, Daniel and Russell. And I hope Nick is doing well. And thank you Mike for covering this.
I grew up a few towns over. I was away at college when this happened. Couldn’t believe it. May they Rest In Peace. And hopefully that piece of shit TJ burns in hell.
As a high school teacher stories like this frighten me deeply. The fact that these events happen as often as they do is troubling. The fact that schools are place where you have to worry about getting shot is just messed up.
We need better security at school. Take down the "gun free school zone" signs. Let teachers and staff carry guns. Don't announce who has them but let it be know that the staff are armed so any future shooters won't know who will be able to fight back. Celebrities, elites, politicians, banks, jewelry stores and even some convenient stores have armed security. Why are our children the least protected asset?
@@augustseven9243 just by this comment you can tell you're a MAGA or republican. Don't you ppl ever think that teachers have enough on their plates already? I didn't know anything about this case, but I remember the video of the horrible thing he said to the grieving families because it was being circled around the internet for a while. I could hardly believe it was real. All my love and condolences to the families who lost their children, and to the students who were affected by what this monster did
I lived about 45 minutes away in Ashtabula County when this happened, and the football coach who charged at the shooter, Coach Hall, ended being the football coach at my highschool after he left Chardon High. Coach Hall always spoke about how he didn't think of himself for even a second, his only focus was on saving the kids and getting the shooter down.
I have never wanted to jump through a screen, and take someone out, so bad as I did, when he gave the finger to the family, of those lives he took. Oh so many will disagree with me, but that pos monster, does not deserve to be breathing. Thank you Mike for covering this tragic story. I truly hope the family can find strength, and the ones taken to soon, are resting in peace.
@@coreencasey5109For the most part I agree, for many it's an easy way out shortening their suffering. Let them live everyday with the knowledge and possible later understanding truly of what they have done. Sadly I'm not convinced this POS feels anything though and murderers tend to be respected in prisons so I've heard. He's scum of the highest order.
The one thing that brings me comfort in this case is knowing that he is in a tiny cell somewhere with his every move monitored and controlled, and every day that goes by he is thought of less and less. He matters less and less. He took innocent lives, but they died just that; innocent, and loved, and remembered reverently. And he’s going to spend the rest of his life forgotten and alone.
The fact that you're typing all this out and still seem very disturbed over the whole situation it seems to me like he still got you on his hook a little bit.
It's weird... I've seen that courtroom scene so many times, and I can't help but see him as just a super lame dude who is trying wayyyy too hard to be edgy. I know that sounds obvious, but considering what he did and the gall to say and represent what he did to the families screams "I am a defiant child and I'm gonna make sure you know this." I can't help but wonder what he thinks of all this now, or how he'll think about it in the future as he "matures."
He’s just another lost emotionally damaged kid from a dysfunctional family and had a lot of anger. Now all he has is to contemplate if losing his freedom was worth it to be seen forever as a monster and the ones he killed as kids killed by a monster. He lost either way
The way he acted in court was just so atrocious. What already was a horrific incident, that just was the shit icing on the shit cake. Thank you for your tasteful and detailed videos. I honestly don’t have any words, I hope that everyone has received the help that they needed.

@@trikelyfe6090 I totally agree-- he was so far removed from any kind of positive attention that he'd been deprived of his whole life that he sought any kind of attention, validated by the disgust of people and the fact that people knew who he was. I had family in the cafeteria that day, I'll never forget that morning. I'm always torn when different sources tell this story, putting his name in the title gives him the attention he was looking for. But at the same time I understand the desire to tell the story. I think you told it well, very detailed and accurate, and from seemingly a different perspective than the norm. Love the channel, easily one of the best.
His name is attributed to a horrific mass murder and a creature that doesn't deserve oxygen. He is not mentioned in a glorious context, to say the least. Also, I'm assuming in his pigeon hall of a cell he doesnt have internet access. (Sarcasm, you get me.) I've never heard of this case or his name before. Now that I know of him, I definitely don't think of him as a hero, you know. The value of his name equals that of a microscopic piece of cockroach shit.
I think cases should be referred to by the victims name.. i.e "The Heartless Killer of _______" instead of videos typically being titled with the monsters name. HOWEVER when it comes to UA-camrs trying to be successful in what they do, I guess cases that involve more than three victims would end up being pretty wordy! Even if the POS is deceased or in prison at time of video being put up and would not personally see it- still rubs me the wrong way!
Because they don’t have the life experience to know that things will change, often for the better. Teens have the same emotions everyone does, and they are heightened in your teens. Only time i remember seeing him smile. He wasn't intimidating physically or otherwise. Looking back I never would have thought he could have done something so heinous.
Oh wow this is so neat to see. When I was 17 I was in the same juvenile detention center with him. They had him in an isolation cell most of the time but he was allowed into the main pod at night to watch an hour of tv (we were already in our cells by then). This was in late august - early September 2012. You could tell by looking at him that he was some type of disturbed. Mike: "I guess he ruined his own life, but who really cares?" Me: Exactly. TJ is a waste of oxygen. I feel zero sympathy, pity, or empathy for that self-centered monster.
Perhaps not having empathy for these humans who walk horrendous paths is the exact reason many tend to do so . Not directly but humans have a lot to do with how these folks turn out . When people are asked about the history of a killer and you hear, "No one thought he was capable of such a thing"; as a teacher, I swear there are kids that teachers can spot as future-problems. I have a couple that if they were accused of a violent crime and I was asked I could honestly say, "I am not at all surprised." I have reported the aberrant behavior on multiple occasions. Sadly, I feel like there aren't enough adequate professional people in the school systems to intervene in these types of cases.
Absolutely agree. There are always warning signs but not enough professionals to help and not enough laws to protect children from the violence of their parents.
As a teacher, I had several students who committed crimes. 1 looked like a rapist and wasn't shocked with what he did. The other caught me totally off guard as he was quiet, polite, and had friends.
I can’t believe it’s been 10 years. I remember when it happened. All of my teachers were so scared for all of us and I remember them reassuring us that we’re all okay and it didn’t happen to us. But it happened SO close to us and it was…. Scary. That’s all I can say. This guy can burn in hell forever.
Mike you're a stand-up guy. You call out creeps like this and give your condolences to the victims and shed light on horrific events. You always give the victims whole names so they can be remembered by all of us, even if its for only a little while. 👏
I like when people do this and put more focus on the lives of the victims instead of just talking about the killer when possible. It deepens the impact of what’s being discussed and I feel like it’s more respectful to said victims to talk at least a bit about their lives and passions rather than only talking about how their lives were ended. It shows that they were real human beings and helps their memory live on.
That must be news to all of the people who outright complied or made a good faith effort to do so; I'm sure the widow of Daniel Shaver will be happy to know that her husband is actually alive and has been all along. My friends son attended this school. I remember very vividly of her telling me about the lock down. Fortunately, she was in communication with him and knew he was safe.
When I was in school everybody was worried about getting busted smoking or cutting class not getting shot. These kids don't know how it used to be. I had a teacher once tell me: "Be careful how you perceive the world, it is that way." It's something that has stuck with me for years. I wonder if even though "bullying" was never confirmed by anyone else, TJ may have perceived it himself. I'm obviously not defending what happened in any way, but sometimes these things make me think about what must have been going through someone's head when they just start shooting.
I think it's certainly worth understanding, and "empathizing" with young people who do terrible things like this for the sake of prevention. I put empathizing in quotes because I can't think of another word for what I mean. I guess putting yourself in their skin as much as that is possible, and attempting to learn their motives so that you can spot others that are having similar feelings and distorted destructive views of reality. I really don't think it's constructive to shrug and say "well he was just an evil bastard", and go on with life, being shocked all over again when another angry young man gets ahold of a gun and takes revenge on the world. That quote you gave is really good. I look back at my own life, and I remember how incredibly varied my perception of reality has been at different times. Usually I've grown in or out of them with the passage of time, and some are very disturbing to recall and were certainly overly cynical and distorted. I wonder if I had a friend or mentor at the time that could pick up on them, if they could have explained people to me in a way that would have saved me a lot of unnecessary sideways paths. At least I hope that is possible for some of these young people.
I bet that the bullying would have been confirmed, if anyone had bothered to ask. I suspect no one dug too deep, because they wouldn't want people sympathizing with TJ. But, I will say this, as a repeat of what I wrote above in my own comment: While he *somewhat* fits the profile of 'troubled loner', which seems prevalent with school shooters, one of the girls interviewed (and shown here) did speak positively about him, so he clearly wasn't Completely without friends. Also, and I think this is the most telling thing: Unlike the vast majority of school shooters who simply start shooting at random (either in their own class rooms or going into another) TJ specifically went up to the specific kids who were 'rumored' to be bullying him. It was by no means random, but entirely deliberate on his part. If he simply 'wanted to kill', he could've shot literally Anyone in the cafeteria, and got the kill he wanted. But he didn't. He went up to the people specifically rumored to have been bullying him. To me, that suggests that they were (or he at least had some other kind of beef with them specifically, to specifically shoot Them, rather than simply shooting whoever was nearest to him... 🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂ That's not intented as a justification, but an observation...
@@TimParker-Chambers Yes, and I don't recall if anyone at that lunch table survived, but I imagine they would be hesitant to honestly say whether anyone in the group had bullied him. The fact he has to spend every waking hour in a maximum security prison, if he wasn't insane then he probably is now. That type of prison is no joke, just you 4 walls of concrete and nothing but your mind almost 24/7.
When you mentioned one of the victims’ father creating a foundation and traveling to try and prevent school shootings like this (or at least reduce it), it made me angry and sad to think about how NOTHING has changed in America since then and in fact, the school shootings have gotten much worse and more frequent.
And you wanna know why shootings of schools and public spaces have become more frequent and not just in the USA? 1. Idolization of school shooters by teens has become more frequent, 2. Lack of guidance and discipline from the parents has become more common, 3. Dysfunctional families have become more common, 4. The fact that gun regulations has increased, gun regulations only threats the safety of the general population which are law-abiding citizens because violent criminals get guns regardless of the legality.

I would say I won't explain my feelings as you don't have the emotional intelligence to unsterstand, At least I will have the memory's of the person I loved and know they loved me back. To be able to take that away from someone shows that you never developed into a functional person, so there is nothing you can now say that can hurt me more because I know you are lesser than us. you seen other people were able to make bonds and you were jealous of that, you caused pain because you couldn't experience love. Now you don't deserve to be loved and thankfully you will never have the chance to. As I got older I mellowed out and now it would take a lot to get me into a situation like that again.
As a person who was seriously overweight in school...Im right there with you. Unlike most people I feel bullying is a unfortunate but underrated "need". You cannot have happiness if you have never suffered, you cannot appreciate things if you've never lost anything. It makes you more humble, humility is a a powerful motivator. I think its made me a better person overall, but I dont like to see it done to others....maybe there is a fine line or perfect middle but I've become friends with everyone that has fought with me or bullied me and this is a common pattern from what I've seen. I dont like violence and couldnt see myself doing anything of this sort, but I think more than just environmental issues cause a person to act this way.
I think it's a great idea & vests, as well as guns, should be handed out in all schools, to trained teachers. It's the planned government instigated mass shootings using mind controlled scapegoats we have to worry about - in schools, malls & elsewhere. The independent loner psycho young gunman - not so much. Because the Communists in DC, directed by Globalists, are behind most of the increasingly common shootings. Their objective is gun confiscation. And they'll murder as many child & adult Americans as it takes. The majority of citizens have no clue. I've studied false flags for 10 years & know they are REAL conspiracies. NEVER give up your 2nd Amendment rights!
Thank you for spending so much time highlighting the victims and survivors and their families, the people who should be remembered while also still reporting on this piece of crap. You do a nice balance of that and it's one of the reasons you're one of the few true crime channels I watch. Cheers, and until next time.
17:34 Nope! My ass would be in prison for the rest of my life had he taken my son and grinned at me like that! I’d have flown over the tables and found something sharp to end that monster. I am just unbelievably shattered for these families. 😡💔
Does everybody remember when they were a teenager and thought they actually knew it all? I did. Then, like EVERYONE else I know, grew up and realized what an idiot I was as a teenager and didn't know sh!t. It's a shame, seeing these kids throw their lives away because they THINK they have an idea about something that in fact they have NO CLUE about. So, if your a teenager, and you kinda don't want to listen to your parents, or think adults "don't know" anything, trust me, every single person on the planet has went through what your going through. Try and be smarter than we were and TAKE the advice and life lessons were trying to give you, as we've already learned them. Unfortunately, usually the hard way.
I always say this! Im 33 now- and I didnt know shit as a teen… or even in early 20s. In high school you think you know it all and your life is complete tunnel vision. Life is so much more than those teen years!
You are so beyond correct . But unfortunately that’s just how it goes . As a teen I did think I knew it all . Now as an adult I understand all my mom explained to me . Although she really wasn’t a mom , I raised myself kinda in a sense . Thankfully now with my kids I also have my hubby that I have been with since age 15 so I’m hoping that as they become teens ( which is coming scary fast ) that having a 2 parent household they will listen better than I did to my mom. Hubby started living with me at age 16 ( he was in a rough spot so my mom let him move in , and now I could never imagine letting my kids bf or gf move in !! Ever ) but we thought we knew it all . We didn’t . Unfortunately we didn’t really have good upbringings and had to raise ourselves . At age 17 we got our first “place” . A tiny duplex . But we have been on our own since 17 . I don’t ever want my kids to go through that . Ever . I want us to teach them right , and learn from the mistakes we made . We are the random story of a young couple staying together but I think That is probably pretty rare . Anyway , I just hope our kids listen to our advice as they grow
I'm 40 now, but I look back at my teen years and man.. I did some very stupid things. I thought I knew it all and was invincible. I did not listen to anyone. That backfired big time. But, I'm a lot wiser these days, thank goodness. Original post is 100% accurate.
Yes! I always try and explain to my kids that what they like and are into at 16 probably won't be the same when you are 18-20. At 25, you likely won't be into any of that anymore. It is so important to us at the tine, and we feel our teen lives will be the way we will feel and be forever.
I came from what people would consider a “good home”. Parents still together, both college educated, upper middle class, went to church EVERY Sunday, etc. That’s what people saw. What was really going on? My dad physically beat me bc I had ideas & opinions about politics, the war in Viet Nam, civil rights, how our country was being ruined…oops! I mean run, to what kind of clothes I wore & how I wore my hair & the music I listened too! A 14, 15, 16 yr. old isn’t supposed have critical thinking skills. AND she’s certainly not supposed to “say” anything about anything! That’s why I was so called “punished”. I couldn’t WAIT to get out of the house. What did I do? Didn’t run away. Didn’t drink or do drugs. Didn’t have sex with every guy I went out with. Instead, I volunteered at the local hospital. Ran for student council…& won. Helped tutor kids who had learning problems. Was on the drill team. When old enough, got my driver’s license & a part time job. Spent an enormous amount of time at my girlfriend’s house. In other words, I removed myself from a very toxic situation & did what I thought was right. I did have a support system, but it wasn’t my family. It could have gone all wrong for me…it was the 60’s! But it didn’t! I’ve been married 35 years, have two very grown up kids, with college degrees & 5 grandchildren. I am very proud & thankful. So. Nurture or nature? I think it’s up to each & every individual. After all, Adam & Eve were made perfect. They didn’t want for anything & yet……????
It's crazy how often this is in the US. In my school just last year we had a gun threat and a bomb threat on the same day... They were unrelated events that both happened to occur the same day... Luckily no one was hurt. The guy who sent the gun threats was caught and punished. I've heard nothing about the bomb threats.
Crazy? What is crazy in your country is, that there are more fire weapons than people. In the Netherlands guns are a no go. And guess what? We never had a school or mass shooting. I wonder why? Yes, cannabis is legal here. Fun fact...teenagers try it ofcours...but I do not know one person who uses it regulary. It is not really a thing here. My girls tried it...don't really like it. We have in ratio way way way less drugadicts than the USA and no criminal dealers, because it is cheap and legal. Yay. Also saves a lot of victims of killing. Tourists are the ones who really come here for the weed and we all laugh about it.
Schools are targeted specifically because they offer no resistance to an assailant. If we’re going to entrust teachers with our children, we should make sure they have the ability to adequately defend themselves and the students in their care… The fact that our tax dollars fund the security details for deceitful politicians over those who represent our literal future is abhorrent
@@Veraxu1227 the stabbings cant kill 50 people in seconds from meters away. Blades don't fragment into small razor sharp bits like some types of bullet and cause secondary damage. Even accepting that the tool is only PART of the problem civilians not owning military grade semi autos does make it harder for this stuff to happen and less damaging when it does But let's say culture is a critical factor, cos it is of course. Cultures as big an issue as guns. "The turd"🤣🤣 We love you Mike! Especially your 3's! It makes for some great unintended laughs! Edit~ All teachers should have bulletproof vests provided to them from the schools budget. It would keep them safe and able to stand between the shooter and the students. Being able to drag that student into the classroom because he was in a vest attests to that!
Mike, thank you so much for this episode. My cousin is a survivor or the Chardon High School shooting, but her classmates unfortunately didn’t. That actually my cousin @13:19
For people saying he should have gotten the death penalty, I think he got a fate worse than death. After his escape and recapture, he was sent to the most secure prison in the state where they send the worst of the worst, the Ohio State Penitentiary. In addition to that, he’s housed in the Supermax section, where he spends 23 hours a day alone in a cell the size of a parking space. No communal dining, no cellmate. I don’t think I’d last a day in those conditions, let alone the rest of my life. A living hell of bordom with no hope of freedom.
Hey you! Love the way you can tell a horrendous story with a touch of whimsy. Even then your humor comes with compassion and respect. The best of both worlds! Whenever I'm bored or depressed I pull up old videos of yours and chase the Blues away.
Sometimes people need to know someone cares, I guess.

Take care. Get yourself a bulletproof vest

💯
this is one of his best. I like how he sets the scene then brings out the characters. The kids appear deep, town good and justice served.
It still amazes me how certain people get arrested so peacefully after committing horrific acts.
I think we know why
Amazed, yet mostly amazed at our society's continuing systemic injustice.
yeah.. they comply with the cops and don't die, what a shock.
That must be news to all of the people who outright complied or made a good faith effort to do so; I'm sure the widow of Daniel Shaver will be happy to know that her husband is actually alive and has been all along. My heart has and always will go out to those affected.
@Johnny Fawks So, let me get this straight, you drove 15 miles at 130 miles per hour? So you _chose_ to selfishly put other people and families and pedestrians and stray dogs at risk, because you wanted to be the big-shot and come in and save your brother, an act only the cops could've done anyway, and you wouldn't have been able to even get in the school or anywhere near your brother.
I do truly think he targeted that group for a reason. A reason you or me will never understand. I try to teach my kids to be nice to everyone always .
And based on his behavior in court, he seems to have greatly disliked his victims. And this is observation, not justification on my part as well. Of course nothing justifies what he did.

I do find that I am slightly desensitised to certain levels of violence.
I would not think much of getting into a fight with someone and can be fine with them 5 minutes later win or lose.
Sometimes I feel bad about it sometimes it feels justified.
End of the day though I never got much out of it, funnily enough I actually ended up being friends with the people I'd fought with.
As I got older I mellowed out and now it would take a lot to get me into a situation like that again.

I think its made me a better person overall, but I dont like to see it done to others....maybe there is a fine line or perfect middle but I've become friends with everyone that has fought with me or bullied me and this is a common pattern from what I've seen.
If we’re going to entrust teachers with our children, we should make sure they have the ability to adequately defend themselves and the students in their care…
The fact that our tax dollars fund the security details for deceitful politicians over those who represent our literal future is abhorrent
We've never had a school shooting in Ireland. There are entire parts of Europe where (outside terrorism) there's been no mass shootings in decades
@@Veraxu1227 the stabbings cant kill 50 people in seconds from meters away. Blades don't fragment into small razor sharp bits like some types of bullet and cause secondary damage.
Even accepting that the tool is only PART of the problem civilians not owning military grade semi autos does make it harder for this stuff to happen and less damaging when it does
But let's say culture is a critical factor, cos it is of course. Cultures as big an issue as guns. Guns are not illegal here just harder to get and types restricted..we've still never had a mass shooting (which u could do with a handgun hunting rifle or shot gun ) ...and school stabbings or any school violence is nearly unheard of even in rough schools. Why? Culture.
USA culture makes a fetish out of violence and aggression and connects throwing your weight around to masculinity.
No mass shootings. Nobody going bankrupt paying for school or college. No participating in attacks on other countries then worrying there will be 'blowback' by some psycho terrorist making innocent civilians pay the price for decisions made by a sick elite.
You've no idea how different you could have it. You just accept the nightmare of a country you have assuming it HAS to be like that. It doesn't.
That shit smirk on his face enraged me so much. My heart broke for the victims families when he gave that horrific little statement, and made me want to scream at the same time.
I was so touched by this video...Chardon, Ohio is one of the nicest, most beautiful towns, ever. I have friends nearby here and i have fallen in love with the area...so sorry that they had to deal with this tragedy.
Hey you, thanks again Mike, thankful for your quality and consistent content
He's so pleased for the pain he caused and keeps causing
Funny way to interview a citizen while he rides his bike. 😂 Thankfully he didn't run into a pole.
It’s hard when you see evil like that ,especially someone so young.
Perfect, a new video from Mike - my weekend can truly begin now!
Enjoy!
