Lots of folks in the comments said that the international trailer is better. And it is, but not by as high as a percentage as I'd have liked. The nostalgic factors get less focus, and there's mention of a shift for the Ghostbusters from only trapping to more actual study, which is a nice evolution. I'm still nervous about this.

I definitely want to see more world building. And it seems like that could be the case based solely on the idea that Winston has a Paranormal research facility or something. And they're studying ghosts and of all kinds and creating new tech. Cause it would be nice maybe someday down the road. We see a ghostbuster film that takes place. Not in New York like africafter life. But somewhere else but it's still all connected to the main ghostbusters in new york. Definitely those some inspiration from the real ghostbusters cartoon .

Highly agree with the "percentage of nostalgia". Honestly the *one* I can let slide is Slimer surprisingly. He kind of became an icon for the universe from the get-go and I can dig the idea of him always managing to slip out when ghost stuff happens like the scamp he is. Like a returning gag but not in a cheap way, still fun and almost wholesome in terms of watching the legacy of the first film. It is also fun to see Janine in uniform (as long as it doesn't feel cheap in the actual story).

The international trailer is much better, it doesn’t lean as heavily on the nostalgia and basically lays out the premise of the film better. So there is that.
I’m happy to see Walter Peck, I’m sure he’s gonna be in the movie for like, ten minutes and function more or less how he did in the first film. Slimer and the Gray Lady do make me kinda nervous, though. I had the same ‘oh god dammit’ reaction to seeing them, especially cause we were moving away from Gozer and much of the first movie, AND YET.
The GB fan and idw comics fan in me is excited but tepidly excited, I really don’t want this to fall into the pit of bad marketing and actually be good.

Jason alluded to Slimer returning in the next film after wrapping Afterlife. I don't see how you don't bring him back. He's as much a part of the Ghostbusters as anything else.

It does look sad, like someone put a bunch of writers in front of the first Ghostbusters and told them to take as much as they could. To be fair, it is possible that's what happened to the trailer editors who were told to lean on the nostalgia. But the fact that they decided to add in pretty much every living actor from the first one kind of leans the needle back.

I saw a still shot and was gobsmacked to see there's another ghostbusters movie. I quite literally grew up with the originals, and the cartoon(cartoons? for some reason I remember two different animation styles but those would have both been pre-2000), could take or leave the 2016 one, and honestly kind of forgot about afterlife (I haven't seen it, I will watch it eventually, and probably sob, which is why I haven't seen it), unless they pull a '13 ghosts of scooby-doo' or something feels like that story was finished already.
Maybe it will bring new fans 🤷

    • @hezekiahramirez6965
      @hezekiahramirez6965 9 місяців тому

There were two cartoons but the second one was Extreme Ghostbusters and that was after 2000. You're probably remembering the "Slimer" episodes. The original show was turned into an early childhood show with inferior animation for its last year or so. I don't watch those ever so I've not seen them since I was a kid but I remember them being bad

I’ve always thought of Peck as a one and done character, so I’ve never been keen on the idea of bringing him back, but to be fair, we haven’t seen him on screen since the original film 40 years (and 5 movies) ago
(I’m not counting the video game or comic series as the general cinema audience may not be familiar with them).
I’m ok with the idea of him being the mayor or whatever and having a role interfering with the new team, and with the new film being back in New York there is always going to be an element of nostalgia of seeing the firehouse and Slimer again.
I’m feeling optimistic about Frozen Empire and think it’s going to be a fun movie.

I distinctly got the impression they had William Atherton for a day and shot one scene. I do honestly hope Winston is in a bit more of it than we see tho. I find old Winston endlessly fascinating for some reason. Maybe it's because I have a lot of affection toward Ernie Hudson (he's been one of my favorite actors since I was a kid) or maybe I just think he kind of gets a lil bit forgotten but whatever the reason, I want more Winston

I can understand that when it comes to the nostalgia used in movies these days, it does get overused to the point of over-reliance. Luckily with Ghostbusters (minus the 2016 reboot), the nostalgia in Afterlife didn't overshadow the movie's plot so hopefully, it will be the same with Frozen Empire. As for what we saw in the trailers, I'm sure there is a reason why characters and ghosts from the original are back which we will have to find out when Frozen Empire comes out.

  • @PaulAndroid
    @PaulAndroid 9 місяців тому +1

I still have hope that this will not just be nostalgia bait and it is in fact just the marketing letting it down because all of the people working on it have emphasized that the last movie was about closing the door on the past and this is about moving forward, and as others have said, the international trailer is much better and doesn’t have the same “remember the good ol’ days?” vibe.

  • @1monki

I'm questioning my support for reviving these old things I loved decades ago. The creators/visionaries that made them are gone, often dead. Whether good or bad reboots, they're dead husks looking for a reason to exist. And they tend towards drawing reactionary fandoms because there's always a unique past thing to compare the current thing to. Even Marvel, who's not rebooting old films, is knocked for not slavishly following the comics.

Look... this whole idea that nostalgia has become a bad thing is total nonsense. When I watch James Bond, I want there to be a "shaken not stirred." Identity is fluid, when people try to force it to into a familiar mold, it turns into tired schtick. YMMV
I like if media resonates with what's come before, such as characters, themes, mythos. But cliched catchphrases and re-used scenes feel simultaneously lazy yet try-hard because they are usually an attempt to get a pass by referencing a better-quality work. Taking time and resources out of the new movie to reproduce something that was done better. Same as with remakes - don't try to recapture the lightning in a bottle of what was perfect, instead exploit the untapped potential of what was flawed or incomplete.

Unfortunately this always felt likely because just like Spider-Man and Men In Black this is a Sony property and Sony just can't help themselves.
Disney collaborates with them and makes popular Spiderman films and Sony still wants more so they pump out the most generic Spidey aligned spinoffs possible (venom, morbius etc).
Ghostbusters Afterlife was a nostalgic film but with a strong heart so it was inevitable Sony would go all in on a sequel with all the subtlety and nuance of a William Shatner monologue.
They are the movie studio with the strongest 'we don't know what we're doing' energy.

To be fair it being set in New York has a big emphasis in this movie, the library is in New York, the ghost is still there, that makes sense, Slimer is living in the firehouse, that makes sense. They do seem to be pushing the concepts further with the actual ghost research, idk it doesn’t seem like your being fair.

Yeah, lets hope that this is just a concentrated nostalgic trailer playing on what brought people in for the first trailer. Of course it is all out of context which is the trouble with judging a movie by the trailers. I see a lot of stuff I still liked, and I don't have a problem with Slimer coming back. It makes sense that he would be hanging around the station eating things for all eternity, perhaps he is one of the reasons the station remained unoccupied all these years since I'd imagine that station is worth a lot on the real estate market especially in New York.

4:39 I related to the frustration here so much. Refrences and similarities in remakes/sequals/so forth that don't match up because of different context or just feels too shoehorned in bug me like nothing else. Takes me completely out of the experience as badly as if the creators paused the film (or added an authors note) to show up and say "hey, hey, see what we did there? We know you did and you love it dont you." Know, I dont like it. Obnoxious cameos are also a pet peeve for me. I preffer the blink and you'll miss it type, placed like any old extra, or where the person is so covered incostume they are almost unrecognizable.

I want to see Ray running his occult book shop, Winston running the company as CEO, more of the "new team" and the new Ice Demon / Ghost thing.
Don't mind Slimer getting a scene lurking about somewhere.
I'm 50/50 on Venkman being back in this - I think there are more interesting characters I'd rather get more time with & don't really feel much need for him to turn up and crack a few jokes right at the end of the film.
Peck, the Marshmallow men & the library Ghosts actively put me off.
Although Peck does have some believability in still being a city official who doesn't care for the Ghostbusters based on past events in the film series - but it's too much retreading of old ground for me.

The rumours of Vigos appearance now make sense with this. Peck is expected to be Mayor, hence his resentment and appearance. I think your criticism is mis-focused. Instead why are lucky and podcast in it? It makes NO sense why 2 kids are allowed to move from Oklahoma to New York to be with the dirt farmers family who they barely know. More to the point.. where is Oscar Barrett?? If ANYONE was nailed on to be a Ghostbuster it was him yet he is completely side-stepped. Many questions need answered. Ok, i know we have characters we know and love or love to hate. However i dont think its just for nostalgia. The original cast arent just cameos this time. The ogs and the new team are working together as the baddie is that terrifying they need all the help they can get. I also have a feeling they were at the library for research purposes and the library ghost possibly a manifestation of Ray's fear which The main baddie feeds off of. I get slimer though. He's probably been hiding and living in the attic of the firehouse for the past 30 odd years, so you can't not have him as everyone wants to see him and we're unhappy he wasn't in Afterlife. You should check out the international trailer, as there is less nostalgia and its more of a scary vibe.

I think the only other time a ghost killed someone in these movies was Bill Murray in the 2016 reboot, but yeah the idea of ghost being very threatening is cool, I don't really care that they're doing the nostalgia thing I think that's more for marketing to get people excited because nostalgia is a hell of a drug but the international trailer was a lot better, like there's a shot at the very end of it that I love that shows most (they're missing like two people) of the ghostbusters old and new just standing together and man seing a team of ghostbusters with like around 10 or 11 people is just awesome to me and what I've always wanted to see from ghostbusters after the first one. A big team, a unit of diverse people coming together to save the world and fight ghost, I can't wait for this film. Sidenote I think you meant J.K. Simmons not J.J. Abrams lol.

Simmons was Ivo Shandor in afterlife not J.J. Abrams

Nostalgia? Well theres gonna be similarities as its a franchise and a sequel.
Slimer. Well slimers been a constant feature from the begininng and throughout. Hes been in every movie, cartoon series and video game. Hes more of a consistent character at this point.
Walter peck. Not surprising hes some goverment office job, he was head of EPA and later PEACOCK in the 1st movie and the video game . So a returning side character is not a big issue.
Theres a new threat, and a mixture of old and new characters to feel like a sequel whilst moving the story along.

Totally agree with you 100% after all this is the cross over from old to new GBs. I can't understand her winging couldn't listen to her waffle on. They are giving us what we want old and new together the trailer was perfect in my eyes turned back to that 8 year kid again in a 47 year old body

Relying on the past quite heavily doesnt allow a film or franchise to establish more new things. Like imagine if this movie has heavy nostalgic things from movies past and thats basically all it is, you could have spent that time on bringing something new to the table which might be interesting or fail but you dont know until you try. Id rather try new ideas than see the same thing done again and again. Maybe its not like that in the actual film but going off the trailer i have no hopes

Dude, it's the trailer, chill... The purpose of this nostalgia shown here is to drag people's asses to the cinema, and most people are down with it. Go to the cinema, watch the film and enjoy yourself.

Sounds like you're hoping for Episode IV: The Last Ghostbuster, but you're being offered Episode IV: The Rise of Ghostbuster.
P.S. You said "J.J. Abrams as Ivo Shandor". That was J.K. Simmons. Abrams would have actually been a pretty good self-deprecating cameo.
P.P.S. They actually used THE "jump scare" noise for Slimer. SLIMER. The least scary ghost. Even Casper is scarier. You know he's hiding something.

We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. U can't reboot this series without the sprinkles of nostalgia in there. Other that 2016 reboot I don't know how much more away from the original u can get...its a great blend of new and old. You seem super angry at a lot of parts. They're gonna go heavy on nostalgia in the trailer bc well they are. Again we will just have to agree to disagree. I love this. I feel like your dogging on it before it's even been seen.

See, the most infuriating thing is: there are bits in there that could actually make a really good film but this clearly shows that those good aspects are drowned, suffocated and utterly snuffed out by huge, slimy (literally!) gloops of nostalgig re-treadings and fanservice. And honestly, I don't think fanservice is the proper term, because I, as a fan, surely don't feel served by it!

I loved Ghostbusters Afterlife. That movie had two jobs. It had to pay tribute to Harold Ramis and prove that Jason Reitman loved and respected the material enough to be trusted to run more projects with it thats why afterlife had so much nostalgia. It was Jason proving his love of Ghostbusters while giving the introductions of the new stuff. I dont understand watching this trailer and saying the movie is gonna be too overloaded with nostalgia. In my opinion it looks really well balanced. Like youre bringing tbe new team to new york and reactivating the brand of course theyre gonna run into a couple familiar faces. Its supposed to be a massive team up movie where the new team isnt getting introduced to the world and the audience, they can now prove their skill and worthiness to continue the name ghostbusters. Im all for it.

    • @jasonorriss

@@wendyheatherwoodWell in the first film Peck accused the Ghostbusters of being frauds who used nerve gases to induce hallucinations, and used “fake electronic light shows” to make people think they were catching them, so even in the very beginning he was outright denying them.
I mean from the perspective of someone down on the street, the Ghostbusters went into 55 Central Park west, and a while later there was a light show from the top of the building. Stay Puft shows up, and then the top of the building explodes.
Peck probably dismissed Stay Puft as a hallucination or projection or something

UA-camrs sure like to moan. I'm pretty sure they have nostalgia dropped into the trailers to hype the original 1984 GB fans. There will probably be enough content in this movie for every fan, new and old. During the 80s - 90s, to get hyped on a movie release you would have to connect with a movie poster in a magazine or in a middle of a comic or Film magazines. Now, movies get shit on ripped apart, boycotted before release because every fucker is a critic. Just enjoy the film for what it is.
