Honestly, I think 60s companions get a bit of a short shrift in general; if you aren't in "An Unearthly Child," you better hope you're Jamie because otherwise you're not getting the attention you deserve. Which is a shame, because there is so much to love in that space.
He is, absolutely, not denying that. My contention is not that Jamie is overrated, but that there are great 60s companions who are very good that just get ignored.@@pious83
Two and Jamie are just the absolute top tier can't be beaten Doctor companion pairing. Their chemistry is impeccable, not just with each other but also with Victoria and later with Zoe. They are all an absolute joy to watch, and make me yearn for some more non-contemporary companions. And yes, thank you, Victoria may do plenty of screaming (and who can blame her!) but she is also such a little badass, she is far from just a passive damsel in distress.
I've loved this story ever since I read Terrance Dicks's novelisation back in the 70s. The sequel, The Web Of Fear, is if anything even better, even given the absurdity of having the Yeti wandering round the London Tube system. One of the writers, Henry Lincoln, went on to concoct some truly bizarre conspiracy theories based on the French village of Rennes-le-Château and the Holy Grail.
I LOVE Two and Jamie. Literally my favorite Doctor/Companion teams. As far as Victoria or Zoe? Jamie works better with Victoria, but Zoe works better with the Doctor. And these animations, IMO are always better in black and white, but the color versions are always fun to watch as a curiosity.
Tubi! Thank you! I’ve been trying to find this* in the US, and I was just about to ask where/how you watched this, when you told me while I was writing my comment. * don’t have anything that can read or play blu-ray. I’ve bought all of the previous animated re-releases on DVD or iTunes Store, but this one is available on neither. They originally announced a Region 1 DVD, but as near as I can tell they just never released it. And it’s weird that it can’t be purchased in the iTunes Store in the US, 17 months later.
I’ve theorized that the entity in The Mind Robber might *also* be the Great Intelligence! There are probably holes in that theory but it does fit quite a bit with their nature & general modus operandi
The animations have definitely improved - The Evil of the Daleks and the Macra Terror are my favourites (cold takes, I know) Unfortunately, this one dragged a bit too much for me, and as a result I don't recall much from when I watched it last year.
The Yeti were the only monsters that literally had me watching through my jumper ... which I pulled over my head. . I was very young. . (Edit) ... I just checked ... I was 5.
No shame in that; truthfully, I find the design charming enough that I’m glad they weren’t reintroduced in the modern era precisely BECAUSE of something about them… What fun ideas the show had back when!
Awesome shirt! I need to see the animated version of this story, have an audio version. But I agree that Victoria is worthy companion and worked well with Jamie and Two. Do I prefer her to Zoe… sometimes… maybe most of the time. At least as far as how she and Jamie interacted. But I also like Zoe being smarter than the Doctor occasionally.
Sadly, this animation is not available on iPlayer (only the surviving episode is), looks like the other animated stories are though, so not sure why this one is not there as well.
In the 80s, before the 1st & 2nd Doctor stories were shown in the US, I read all the available novelizations and this was then my favorite 2nd Doctor story -- I was so disappointed a few years later when I learned it was mostly 'lost.' As for Victoria, I think they nicely if slowly developed her character from the scared Victorian stereotype she started as, up until the story she left in (Fury from the Deep), when I felt she regressed.
I haven't had a chance to watch this one yet, but I read the novelization back in high school, and I really enjoyed it. I also had all the old Jean-Marc Lofficier books about the production, ones with episode summaries, production stories, cast and crew, etc. I think I've seen the one surviving episode, since it's in the "Lost in Time" box set. When I do get to watch it, I'm doing black and white first. I'll watch the color animation, but not until I've seen the grayscale, because that's how 60s who was made and intended (and honestly, some of the 70s episodes could have been better in black and white - I love Invasion of the Dinosaurs, but episode 1 is so much better for not being in color).
Filmed in Snowden Wales beautiful place later used for 5 doctors ,great for vacation and the pictures of the filming and tardis are great Would you do original audio the pescatons, patadise of death ,ghosts of n space etc ?
The 2nd Doctor and Jaimie was the first notable BROMANCE in the Whoniverse.......and yes, Tom Bake (4th Doctor) had better chemistry with Lala Ward (Romana 2) than he did with Mary Thames (Romana 1)
BBCi player doesn't even have this story. They have the surviving episode 2 and that's it. Not sure why. I thought maybe because it's quite new but Galaxy 4 is on there and that was released in the same year.
My personal recommendations: 1. The Time Meddler 2. The Mind Robber 3. Inferno 4. City of Death 5. Kinda 6. Vengeance on Varos 7. Remembrance of the Daleks
@@lasseehrenreich5502 Just letting you know in advance, some of these stories can be a bit... challenging (Kinda deals with a lot of metaphysical elements, and Inferno is 3 hours long), but if you can get into them, they're definitely worth your time.
That is a pretty good list, actually. There are many highlight stories I could rave about but, as far as introducing yourself to the show is concerned, I think @someguy3752 has nailed it.
If u want complete seasons as they aired it’s best to start with Jon Pertwee cause everything from him until the end of the classic era has been found and archived u can dabble into hartnell and Troughton but full seasons aren’t there and not knowing how u feel about the animated reconstructions is why I say start with Pertwee even though hartnell and Troughton are great doctors in there own right
I think classic era companions can get a bad reception especially the 60’s ones due to not being much surviving episodes of them past the the first 3 of Susan Ian and Barbara due to more of their serials being recovered and I still feel I didn’t get a proper since of Elizabeth Shaw Pertwee’s first companion do to the actress being fired in between Pertwee’s first and second season as the doctor cause to me she felt like for a human she was a match for the doctor intelligence wise where she didn’t need something spelled out for her like joe grant her replacement would in some instances and if I’m correct on her hair color she could’ve been the first red haired companion the doctor had there are some pretty good serials with other companions like the gunfighters for example but not enough of then to just a live action performance of the companions until we get to Pertwee where everything from him going forward has been found and archived and my only complaint about Tubi having the classic era is they only have 7 of the 8 doctors cause they didn’t get the 1996 movie so if the BBC removed the classic era from Britbox across the board in all countries then physical is the only way to see the movie either it’s standalone release or it’s inclusion in the doctors revisited release that features Paul mcgann

That's sad but true. Those 4 are the most memorable 60's Companions.
Jamie is great though. He and 2nd Doctor are my favourite pairing in all Doctor Who.

@@aducharme01 Some never got their chance to truly shine at all ala Sara Kingdom.
People might expect good chemistry between the 4th Doctor and the regenerated Romana as Tom Baker and Layla Ward were a couple at the time

10:47 I think Big Finish covered it in a surprisingly recent First Doctor Adventures audio called the 'Secrets of Det Sen'.
And it's excellent!! Highly recommended
I was just about to comment this myself LMAO

I love the abominable snowman It is a great second doctor stories I have seen episodes 2 of it
This is a story I've really wanted to watch. The Great Intelligence is an interesting entity.
Pedantic fan alert! This story is between Tomb of the Cybermen and The Ice Warriors. Great review! 😊
Wasn't expecting a shirt reveal lol. Also love your wrist cuff
Very unexpected shirt reveal!

Seems iPlayer just has the colour version, too, but there may be a setting somewhere I'm missing. Seems it's likely just the Blu-rays

If you watch on a TV or computer, you can adjust the screen saturation to watch things in black and white if you want.

Jamie and Zoe are best companions. That was the ultimate team. No shade on Victoria, but she had to make way for the dream team.
Has anyone any suggestions for which story would be good to start watching classic who?
My personal recommendations:
1. The Time Meddler
2. The Mind Robber
3. Inferno
4. City of Death

6. Vengeance on Varos
7. Remembrance of the Daleks
