Well, it turns out we were all wrong (me included). Project Farm released a bar oil test today and "Harvest King" for $10 beat out all the big names. It seems to be the only company he tested to do a solid additive package...I would have never guessed they were all so different.
And cheap 30wt motor oil had the best lubrication package. All I’ve ever used. Back when we had 50 fallers we tested used oil vs expensive bar oil and the money savings was enough to not only buy a new bar but a new saw! lol
I bought 5 jugs of the Harvest king because of Project farm, came home and gave two jugs of my Husqvarna oil to a buddy that has a tree removal company.
I live in West Virginia and then Napa on $28 a gallon for the Napa borrow the harbor or the Royal King had it for 799 a gallon haven’t tried it yet. Think I’ll be buying it. Used to buy the force king borrow for three dollars a gallon at our logging store
Thanks for the video. I never click on the "testing the cheapest..." titles, but since this was from you, I knew I'd learn something. You have an excellent channel! Glad I stumbled onto it.
Im in the used motor oil camp. At todays prices, just several gallons will put enough money in your pocket to replace a bar and chain or an oil pump. I've never had any significant wear though. As far as the oil pump, that could probably be saved by running through a 10 or 20 micron filter before use, but for now i just keep the drainpan clean and dont knock dirt into the pan when draining
I really like Mystik lubricants. their high temp red grease is excellent, I use it on everything from whell bearing to greasezerks. I am currently using their bar and chain oil now, and it's my new favorite for my Husky saw. I believe it was around $10.00 US a gallon.
@@mattfleming86 i am not sure if there is a winter grade that is thin for winter and a different weight for summer. i have seen bar and chain oil sold at woodsman field days. and the price per gallon if you by it by the quart or the gallon or by the 5 gallon bucket or drums 25 gallons or 55 gallon drums. and it depends on price leader, inventories and projected price change.
I run used motor oil. Two saws, 18 and 20 years old. Never had a problem with the oilers or keeping the chains lubed. Been doing this for about 50 years. I do strain the oil first.
Straining the oil makes sense, you don't want particulates from your car engine scratching up your saw carb and cylinder. I was horrified to read your comment until the last line
I still use old motor oil but I filter it with sawdust and cheese cloth in a couple 5 gallon buckets...drill holes in bottom of bucket put a couple inches of clean rock in the bottom of bucket to hold cheese cloth off bottom and fill halfway or more with dry sawdust....place bucket in second bucket to catch the oil .... haven't burned a pump yet
The saw maker BU-KO advise in instructions not to use wasted or regenerated oil as MAY damage the oil pump. They recommend engine oil, 10w-30 .!!!!!!!!! My understanding was that "Chain Oil" had an additive that made it sicky. ie cling to the chain and not just fling off. I used cheap stuff in a Husqvarna for years.
Transmission hydraulic fluid for our tractors and Lucas oil additive to make it cling. Best yet . Think ' big gears grinding together and an oil pump making 3000 lbs pressure . And gooy Lucas.
Honestly, I think the best bar oil available at a reasonable price is from Echo and I run it in all my saws. The tack is excellent, the lubrication is excellent, it's an all season oil and it can be had for under $20 sometimes. It's very popular with enthusiasts on chainsaw forums as well. Anecdotally, a fellow running a tree service company did an experiment over a long period of time trying to figure out which oil gave the longest bar life on his saws. He wanted to keep costs down on replacing equipment and chains. The Echo to his surprise did best and now that's all he uses.
For years I've got bar oil from my Stihl dealer who gets 55 gallon drums of some mystery oil. It has worked fine for 20 years but I have no clue what is in the drum. More recently he has had trouble getting it and the price isn't as good as it used to be so I've been trying other oils.
Thanks for making & posting. Seems from comments that just about anything works. Four of more years ago I bought a case of Stihl BO. It's the only brand I've ever used. It was always fairly thick and poured slow in winter & a little faster in summer. Used it all up and bought another case. Same part number, but oil was definitely thinner. I now need to resupply. Bought some recycled from dealer a long time ago, seem pretty thin so I gave it away. I trusted Stihl & products with my O36 Pro, but now have MS362 (not cm) and no longer trust em. Stupid flip fill caps and leaks oil from muffler with max lean Carb. So now the quandary of least cost/ max lube bar oil.
I used to use husky bar oil because a local hardware store/dealer sold it cheap to get people to come into the store. I bought cases of it. Now that they are not doing that any more I had to go for something else. I have a 362, I really liked it but I eventually wore it out, a lot of hours. I never liked the Stihl caps.
Can't comment on the newer bar and chain oils; I bought a lot back in the late 1970's and I'm still (not Stihl) using it. Good info to know when I run out.
4:10 I was just about to comment that you didn’t test the cheapest stuff lol I use the old motor oil out of my diesel truck. I don’t have a high dollar saw, just an old 455 rancher I bought for $100 10 years ago. I’ve bought 1 new bar in that 10 years and cut LOTS of firewood for the hungry out door boiler. It’s free motor oil for my old husquvarna. I have absolutely come out ahead not buying bar oil.
This segment was pretty informative. So are the previous comments that a I’ve read as a result. My last jug was Oregon bar oil as it was on sale for 13.99 Cdn.
