  • Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is one of the largest carriers in the world. With nine hub airports across the country, the airline uses its fleet of nearly 850 mainline aircraft to connect cities big and small at home and abroad. As it continues to make investments in new aircraft, it is also working on retrofitting older aircraft in its fleet. Let's take a look at this major carrier's fleet composition in 2022.

    I know they're old, relatively inefficient planes and it makes sense to swap them for the awesome A220 but I'll miss seeing the 717s. Just something about swept-wing, huge T-tail and rear-mounted engines that looks cool to me.

      @yo yo There's plenty of demand for long and thin routes that need a long range 100 seater. However you are correct that there's also demand for economical short range 100 seaters that is not being met.

      @yo yo I know you love the MD-95/717 but is was already effectively dead when MD merged with Boeing with very poor sales. Correct about 737-600 but the 700 sold over 1200. Hardly "no one wanted it". Boeing actively marketed the 717 and just couldn't interest many other than Hawaiian and Qantas. The biggest factor that killed the program was the RJ's, especially in the US market which was it's prime target. Time just had moved on from the old DC-9 based aircraft that really had very few upgrades over the life of the program and devertives other than the the new engines and cock bit. Lack of investment by MD was it's biggest issue to make it more competitive.

      @@jmlinden7 For short 100 seater flights of 1,000nm or less there really needs to be a stretched Q400. For that distance the economy of a turboprop just is not achievable with a jet and the additional travel time is within the taxi time variation at many hubs.

    • @TraceAviate
      @TraceAviate 2 роки тому

      @@johniii8147 To be clear though your right about the 717’s poor sells but there other factors came into play. First off, 9/11 and rising fuel prices made most airlines not in financial position to by new planes. Two, airlines that could by planes prefer the 737 & a320 for higher capacity. Three, Boeing did advertised the 717 well or introduce a new variant like the 717-300 that would have gotten orders from Delta in the early 2000’s. Lastly Boeing favored it’s 737 line up over any narrow body jet it offered at the time, aka 717 & 757.
      Now Boeing doesn’t have a jet to compete with a220 because they have given up on the 717.

    I just flew on the A350 from ATL-DTW and it was amazing. It was so quiet and comfortable. I even got to go up into the cockpit and chat with the captain. My ranking of Delta’s Fleet: A350, 757 (both variants), 737-900, A220 (Both Variants), 717, 767, A321, A320, 737-800, A319, and A330 (All Variants).

    • @gks7424
      @gks7424 2 роки тому +1

      @@sking2173 I've flown in coach plenty of times on the 737/757/767. I rank those narrowbodies higher due to updated cabins (having in-seat power, better performing IFE and Wifi, a quieter interior, and newer seats) and just the overall performance and comfort. The 767 is a beauty with the 2-3-2 configuration and a great workhorse, however, with Delta not putting much effort into the aged coach cabin especially on the -300ER variant. It makes the overall experience below average compared to the rest of the fleet. And I understand your side as well, but if Delta put the time into an updated cabin for the 767 then my results would change. I've flown many years ago on a -400 variant but I can't compare that cabin in relation to the -300 variant.

    • @sking2173
      @sking2173 2 роки тому +2

      @@gks7424 - I can appreciate your opinion as you have valid reasons for your ratings.
      Mine requirements are somewhat simpler. As I am a wide-bodied person, I need wide seats, specifically, generous shoulder room. Obviously, seating configuration also plays a part, too.
      I find the Boeing single aisle aircraft (except the 717) in the industry-standard configurations (3x3) to be totally unacceptable. The A320 series aircraft in the same configuration can accommodate noticeably wider seats. And that 220 is amazingly comfortable.
      In the international market, I was sad to see Delta dump their 777’s, because they had kept the 9-across seating, which allowed comfortably wide seating, even more generous than their 350’s. (I do enjoy the quietness of the 350, though.)
      Most all of my flying is international, so the long distance haulers are the most important to me. I don’t mind taking a CRJ with no amenities to my gateway airport; the over-the-pond aircraft is the one where I need IFE and power at the seats. Of the US carriers, Delta is the only one I’ll use, as United and America equip their 777’s in 10-across, and their 787 in 9-across, both of which are unacceptable.
      Most recently, I have been flying Japan Airlines. I do enjoy their “SkyWider” coach seating on their 777’s and 787’s. I also use Korean Air (777 only) and Emirates (380 only).

    Least favorite the 717 they’re just so cramped and uncomfortable. Favorite even though it’s retired the 777 it was so comfortable from Atlanta to Johannesburg and back. Flying in Oct from ATL to FCO on an a330 and back on an a350, after that trip I may have a new favorite(s).

    I think the most interesting aircraft in Delta’s fleet is the Boeing 757-300. Also know as “the flying pencil”, it is a rare aircraft and the fact that it is a narrow body aircraft that has a seating capacity of over 200 passengers.
    Boeing should consider “Maxing” the type.

      @@MakeItTooBigToRig the A350 has just a painting damage. For example the max, that plane crashed two times so that are bit different problems. Besides that, the EASA as not safety relevant. So in my mind Boeing has the bigger problems and Airbus the better planes.

      @@noahbrandner710 Just for reference, the Airbus A320 family has had 36 hull loss accidents and a total of 1393 fatalities. the last in Pakistan in May of 2020. So far, the 737 Max has had two. I guess it's just how you present the statistics and news. As for the "paint damage". It's not paint, it's delamination of the composite outer skin exposing the lightning protection embedded in the composite layup. Not a good thing. Nobody, not even Airbus has a fix for that yet. Bondo won't do. Boeing's issue was corrected with software and mending fences with the pissed-off FAA. Airbus lost its largest customer which pretty much shut down the A380 (the big pink elephant in the Airbus boardroom) production permanently. Keep in mind the source of information and news on this site usually comes from European-based sources. They love to bash Boeing and flaunt Airbus. It's good for their economy.

      @@Georgiagreen317 You can’t compare a plane that exists since the 1980s to a plane that exists since 2015. You could compare the max with the a320neo family. If not you have to compare all 737s with all a320s. If not it’s not a fair comparison. And it’s known that Boeing has a few problems with their production and the quality.

    My current favorite of Delta's fleet is the B767-400 & second favorite has to be the B757. My last favorite is the B717, and the A319. I'm so glad they retired their tired old MD80s & MD90s.
    I've never been much of an airbus fan, and was really sad to see my hometown airline retire their 777 fleet. Of the Delta historical fleet...I loved the L1011 and MD-11s, and of course the B747-400. I'd really hoped that my favorite airline would add the B787 Dreamliner to its fleet. I know with their switch to Airbus wide bodies, it's unlikely to see them add the B777x , but that would be awesome.

    The Delta's A350-900 has a row of seats that does not recline even half an inche, in economy just in front of the toilettes in the middle of the airplane. I took a night flight and sat there. My "lucky" was that nobody else choose that row and I was able to use the 3 seats for myself for some comfort. In a fully booked night flight people seating there will have a bad time.
