      jared Noah I use handloads. it's really not bad if you lean into it. Really, it doesn't kick as much as a .300 Win mag or .338 lapua. I consider those to recoil a lot. Plus, my marlin .45-70 has a rubber butt pad (comes standard) in place of a metal butt plate, so that probably helps. Don't get me wrong, the sound rattles your teeth. But recoil wise? Not bad.

Checking out the new Marlin "Guide Guns", and comparing them to the Henry, there was NO comparison. The Henry comes with a better rear sight, the tube feed magazine, and better quality finishing.

    I bought one of these last fall and by the time it came, in hunting season was winding down. Now, here we are again, leaves are turning colors and that Henry rifle is ready to go.
    I was torn between the 30-30 and 45-70. I got the 45-70. Our deer and black bear season run concurrently here; 30-30 is a little light for bear, so and this gives me a good 100 yard thumper.
    I’m not shooting hot loads, just Remington green box, and it’s basically the same recoil as a 12 gauge slug.
    My only complaint is they don’t come stock with a peep sight. I wasn’t a fan of that semi buckhorn sight, especially for a close and fast brush gun. I installed a Ranger Point Precision peep sight. It’s a quality setup, made in Texas, USA.
    Could not be happier!

    Bought my 45/70 Henry just at deer season , I also have a savage 45/70 . The old savage kicks the ---- out of your shoulder with a pad , just a note . The Henry recoils very similar to the 30/30 which surprised me . In fact it's so smooth I give Henry a10 out of 10 . Really enjoy the lever action it's smooth as butter on a hot day . One thing I want everyone to note , upon first firing I was having a problem closing the breach . After 4 rounds I noted the cartrage was waffled ? Also was a bit difficult to get the spent cartridge to eject . Got to looking down the receiver right at the connect of the barrel there was a flat wad of ? What is this ? Gun was still warm and I took a small pin knife and removed the flat wad turns out it was a wax like substance . After removal I went home and really cleaned the barrel back at the breach just about 5" down the barel first . A little more wax ? I read several other new owners also had this incident . After giving her a good cleaning , lubed up everything there was no more problem , it loaded sooooo smoothly eject same thing . I kept the spent brass to send to Henry because it's very obvious the damaged brass is waffled . So when (and you need one ) you get home clear that breach look down that barrel and make certain there is nothing in there . Now the first kill was 2 wild hogs using double tap ammo at night waited until both wild hogs were shoulder to shoulder . One shot 2 kills ! First pig dropped on the spot 2nd pig ran about 40' before he dropped . Get you a Henry !

But I think it's the most ergonomic and satisfying to shoot lever action gun ever made IMHO. Superb workmanship and finish.

    A friend of mine bought that same gun used,but like new. Beauty of a gun,but it did have some issues with the lever wanting to flop down. Also the mag tube was too thin walled to handle the recoil of big powerful 405 and 500 grain stuff made for the big tough animals.They also later did away with the barrelband and front sight together. Henry has a great lifetime warrenty and even being second owner Henry paid for the shipping, and did all the necessary upgrades and repairs and got the rifle back to him in short order.Because of the front sight barrel band thing, they even replaced the barrel, new heaver tube, and the front sight s now even better.What a great company to do business with and American made.

    They originally called the 45-70 "45-70-405" meaning a .45cal bullet weighing 405g sitting on 70g of powder. I think one of these days Marlin and/or Henry should make a 45-90 and 50-70 caliber rifle, that would be sweet (if you can find/load ammo for it)

      +FD Mackey Most of them do come in a more traditional variant, including the 30/30 and the Big Boy.
      Personally, the feeding system on the Henry is, for me, a better one. If I cant deal with a charging animal with the rounds in the tube, then having a loading gate isnt going to save me. The tube system on the Henry is a lot faster to unload, and a lot softer on brass.

    Nice video. Good job on pointing out the advantages of the tube feed without a side loading gate. Glad to hear the Henry is such high quality, since i want a Big Boy Steel in 41 Mag, as well as one of these. In a hunting situation, u hopefully will never need more than 2 shots- the initial shot and possibly a followup for tough game or in case of a marginal first shot. Obviously, u want to take the animal cleanly, without suffering. I cannot imagine a situation where 5 or 6 45-70 rounds are not sufficient. Maybe if a group of pigs charges u after u shoot one, but that is pretty farfetched (thankfully). I love that it comes with the Express peep sight, because i put peeps on all my lever guns anyway. Glad to see some LH shooters helping in the test. As a LH shooter myself, i find that lever guns are great. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work.

      frankdn109 I've had many Marlins. I like the Henry quality, loading and unloading much better. Marlin quality is no more. Terrible! Run by Remington bolt action boys without any clue about lever guns. They fired everyone and moved the factory. Marlin n is no more!!

      Mike383HK I've owned an 1893 in .32-40 and an 1895 .45-70. Wish I hadn't sold them now! The only other Marlin I ever admired was the old 336, because it fit me so well: snap to the shoulder with eyes shut and the sights were dead on. Now however, my game gun is a Savage 99... pointed bullets, yeah! But the fit? Not so good (not to mention the trigger... bleah!).

      frankdn109 I had a .444 and the finish was terrible. Had to redo. The old ones were much better but they didn't have the modern twist for heavier loads. Not accurate. Triggers sucked!! I bought a Rossi 92 .44 mag. It's been a nightmare. Twice back to the factory for feed problems. Unfortunately the only one with the tight twist for heavy bullets. Never again!! I bought a Henry .22!! WOW!! I'm going Henry from now on!!

    The tube feeding is more dangerous than a side loading gate by far! You put your ha d in front of the muzzle. The side loading gate is superior in every single way. And also you don't have to cycle the action on the Marlin to empty it. Just push the side gate and they come out the same way they go in

    • @8654ZuluFoxtrot
      @8654ZuluFoxtrot 9 років тому +2

      +Andre Krumins You must not either have one or have ever spent time training with one. The loading system on the Henry is actually faster than side ports. Being able to drop a round into the chamber and fire is 10000% faster than side port loading. Simple stuff for anyone who actually trains.

    • @therideneverends1697
      @therideneverends1697 9 років тому +2

      Steve H. I was going to let that go as a matter of opinion but your simply incorrect. a Henry style loading action requires you do basically half disassemble the magazine to wedge rounds through a little hole. During the whole operation the gun is basically deactivated and incapable of fire. Where as the side loading system allows you to reload and keep the gun in a ready condition as well as having a quicker mechanism to insert the cartridges, at any time during the reloading process you can stop and fire, where as the henry requires the magazine tube to be reassembled, so what the henry can have a cartridge dropped into the action slightly faster, the rifles essentially a single shot rifle until its put back together where as the side loader is adaptable, as well as having a simply faster base reload. There's a reason every lever gun 1866 onwards was side loading, its a direct improvement. Its ok to have a statistically inferior gun, as lever actions themselves are statistically inferior, but you cant argue an direct improvement. Mosens are great, even though the VEPR-54r is functionally better in every way, You don't have to have a reason for every gun, and your guns don't have to have a purpose, its ok to have a technologically behind gun, because its fun.

    • @8654ZuluFoxtrot
      @8654ZuluFoxtrot 9 років тому +4

      +Andre Krumins You are allowed to have your own opinion, but if you own one (or have actually trained with both) you would know you can actually reload the Henry just as fast, if not faster. The OP points this out in his video, as have many others, and I reload single shots and put rounds on target far faster than you (or anyone) can reload and put rounds on target with a side loading system.
      "Technologically behind" is simply stating that you don't appreciated a proven system that is nearly 100% reliable. I don't have shit to prove to you, I've been there and done that, but I will put the tube loading system slightly above the side loading for speed when you actually train in both. When you consider the single shot loading speed....well, it's not even close. Please, stand downrange against someone trained in single loading vs side port loading and see where you stand. Real world experience surpasses "opinions" every time. This was not an "opinion" post by the way.

      8654 Zulu Foxtrot I think Andre's point is during the shooting side load allows you reload and back to shoot quickly, don't have to bother pull and insert the follower. I like side load gun.

    • @andrewjonas3557
      @andrewjonas3557 6 років тому +1

      If you need to be able to reload on the fly as to put 20 rounds down range maybe you should get a gun with higher capacity. With 5-6 shots of a 45-70 there shouldn't be anything left to shoot at unless you are a terrible shot or there are multiple targets. Still in either of those cases maybe go with a higher capacity. I just bought a Springfield M1 alpha 308. It is semi auto and has 20 round mags. Fairly comparable gun, trading a little knockdown for more rounds which may better suit somebody that is being forced to speed load their 45-70.

      @@oreopuppydawg1564 Yea, this will even happen with pistol calibers above .40 S&W unless you're using home defense ammo. (Critical Defense, etc.) :D Home defense gun, it's not, but I'd say that of any rifle outside of a .22 LR. A tactical Ruger .22 LR with big magazines would be a way better choice for that, if you had to have a rifle for home defense. But, if you live on a ranch/farm or some place with hell of a range then we could start talking about the real rifles.

    I have a Marlin guide gun in 450 marlin and I like the side loading gate because you can shove rounds in at any time, even while a round is in the chamber. You don't have to stop shooting to reload. I also removed the safety and installed a saddle ring. That's how they made the safety on the newer guns by removing the saddle ring.
    I shoot the Hornady Leverevolution with a 325 gr. bullet leaving the muzzle at 2250 FPS, vs. the 300 grain Federal trophy bonded bear claw that leaves the muzzle at 1850 fps. Love the big bore levers

      strangefire1 Not too many people realize a 450 Marlin is like a 45/70 on steroids. Hornady did us lever action owners a huge favor when they came out with the Leverevolution ammo. The 444 Marlin, 35 Remington, and the 30-30 Win. are now capable of serious business.

    Love my Henry Golden 45-70. Reminds me of my old 45-70 that I hunted with for years in the brush of Maine. Warning: Hornaday LEVERevolution ammo does not work well with the tube fed Henry. So before you complain, try different ammo. This issue, by my testing, is the end of the Hornady case is slightly larger than normal and the tube hangs up on the base. This is caused in part by the sharp nose of the cartridge allowing the bullet to rock in the tube. This rocking along with the case makes loading maximum number of rounds impossible without giggling the tube. I've also seen videos that state you can't reload the reverevolution 45-70 due to non consistent case diameter. Perhaps this has changed recently but I had to get rid of all my old 45-70 ammo. PS It will work fine in a Rossi 45-70. It's the tube on the Henry that causes the issue.

It was exchanged because of a design change compared to the first one I had. It is smooth and shoots like a dream. Fun Gun. And a a great shooter. The rear sight can be changed to a smaller sight if you need better accuracy at a distance. Also Cabalas sells a scope for the 45-70 and to use for Hornady Ammo 325gr bullet. good for 100 to 300 yards, but I reload so open sights for me. Keep up the good work Sootch00 .

    that rifle is a timeless beauty, just a work of art. My Marlin lever is in .45-70, such a sledgehammer of a round. I shot a 465 lb black bear from 20 yards out, 2 years ago. exploded his heart and piled him where he stood. the strain was more than he could "bare" :-)
