We're so lucky Ruger picked up Marlin when Remington went down. I am sure Ruger will have Marlins being made better than ever. I am partial to the brass Henry's myself, but both are beautiful guns.

Thank God Himself my local shop is owned/ran by a dam good man too, picked up my Henry 30-30 side gate all brass for I believe like 1015 bucks out the door. If you were to find one (it was incredibly difficult to find one when I did too) you know dam well it'd be much more expensive.
Still waiting to find either an X or an all weather in .44 mag aswell as the little pea shooter 45-70...
Henry's raised the bar so high overall man it's forced Ruger to make damn sure the Marlins start to bring back some of that good ole American Pride. That's a win there I guess 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I own three Henry lever-action rifles and one Marlin lever-action rifle. I can vouch for the accuracy and smoothness of the Henry vs the Marlin. Fit, Finish, and quality of the gun are superior in every way to the Marlin. If you can only buy one lever-action rifle, buy a Henry, you always get rave reviews from friends and fellow shooters regardless of size and bullet caliber. Also, if you ever need service there is a huge difference. Henry will send you a mailing label and return it within a week to ten days. Sometimes they can do it even faster. I returned a Henry pump twice because I was unhappy with the smoothness of the action and Anthony Imperato called me and said He's sending me a replacement Pump-action or any other gun of my choice in the same caliber. I chose a Silver Boy. That's customer service when the President of a company follows up personally on a service call. I don't know what Marlin would do but Henry is famous for their Service and lifetime warranty.
The Henry warranty is second to NONE! Simply can't be beat! I had to buy the only remaining golden 45-70 side gate at my local gun shop, and found a small putty repair in rear stock nest to sling lug. Got home and immediately sent them a message and did not see the spot to send them a pic. This was Monday, and Friday, just 4 days later, I receive not only a rear stock complete with butt plate and sling lug, but also a new fore stock! WOW was all I could say when I got them! Fantastic service, bar none!
@@olcowhand I wouldn't say their warranty is second to none. I had a Henry after a few Range days it started to jam. The magazine tube had came loose and was causing it to jam. I called Henry and the guy o talked to said to "send it in and we'll replace the tube, it probably won't fix it but we can try." I asked if it didn't fix it would they be willing to replace the gun? he laughed and said don't count on it. He said cause I'm sure you have already tried to put the tube back in yourself, so how do we know you didn't screw it up. i got rid of the Henry and bought a Marlin. I love my Marlin.
@@Jerry-jg1uc Just shot my marlin this season today. Had it sighted in from last year and it's been in the safe since. I was shooting 50 yards and it was dead on. I love my Marlin as well, the smoothness of the operation is what I really like. The sweet succulent flow of the lever as you pump another round In...great feeling
I just take mine to my local shop and they fix my guns up. Never really tried going through the gun company like marlin or Henry. Will definitely look into it, thank you!
@@Jerry-jg1uc I’m sure you got someone at Henry who picked up the phone by accident. Call Anthony and tell him this story. Who ever told you that was dead wrong and Anthony will say so too. Henry will do anything including replace the gun to make a customer happy. They absolutely did that for me and I didn’t even have to ask. Call Anthony and you will understand what customer satisfaction is all about. If he doesn’t take care of you let me know.
Two christmases ago my Grandpa gave me my great-grandfather's Marlin 336 .30-.30 that he bought new in back in the 60s or so and it has been the best rifle I've ever used. I hope one I'll be able to pass it along to my grandson😊
I've been shooting a Marlin .30-30 since I was a kid, have a 1995 .30-30 in my inventory to this day. Never had a problem, shoots great, still tight, and very accurate. The Henry's are nice, shot two of them in the past. Not enough difference to choose one over the other. Guess it's more personal preference than anything.
I just got handed down a 1949 marlin 336 and I love it. Such a smooth and satisfying gun.
Same. 1950s 336SC in .35 Remington. What a gem.

Truly informative, solid video reviews and information. Mr Hickok is extremely knowledgeable. And I love the way he has that skin on the gun table so that the lovely woodwork and metalwork on the guns remains cared for and remain un-scratched.
I still have my Marlin that my Dad bought me in 1971 when I was 15 years old. The action is smooth as silk and still looks like new.
That mass produced firearms can have such tight tolerances between wood & metal is just amazing.
I've always admired people who can work wood and/or metal to make such fascinating objects.
None of the wood metal fit compares with the old Winchesters of a 100 years ago
Enjoy your videos. I'm a Marlin guy. Bought my first one almost 40 years ago. A used 336 R.C. the most reliable rifle I've owned.
The fit and finish on my Henry's is second to none on my lever actions. I own both Marlin and Henry lever actions.
There is absolutely no comparison in machining and attention to detail between the two. Henry is without a doubt the better firearm in that arena. As far as accuracy is concerned, I cannot tell any noticeable difference inside 100 - 150 yards. As always Mr. Hickok is majorly objective and spot on. Thanks again for all you do for the shooting community with these videos.
Marlin seven days a week and twice on Sunday.
Remington Marlin were the first ones to make the carriers out of billet block steel instead of machining.
I do not believe Henry nor Winchester do this. I realize now what looks so different about Henry forearm stocks.
They are elongated and flat, verses Marlin’s being more rounded.
Best 22 plinker I ever had was a Marlin Golden Mountie 39A which I lost when Hurricane Katrina put my house under 20 feet of water. I sure miss that rifle. Great video, Hickok. I learn a lot from your videos. Keep 'em coming.

I bought three 39As over the years. . first when I was 18 for $50 could have had his matching 30/30 for another $50. That was in the 60s.

Thanks for the great video.both are great rifles.Just bought a new dark series 45-70 marlin for my son's graduation which field tested excellently . Also purchased a Henry all weather 45-70 for myself because it is so slick and fits my scabbard nicely . It also shoots well.One thing I've noticed is that when you purchase a new rifle it instantly becomes a whole lot better than before you own it.Love lever guns!! Thanks for the videos!
My Dad bought me a Marlin 22. automatic from Western Auto in late 70s. Silver trigger w leaf. forearms & squirrel on the front of stock. Still got it...

Have a Marlin 30 30, that belonged to my Dad (gun at least 60yrs old). It has put plenty of meat on the table. Still shoots sweet.
I got one from my grandad that's about 50-60 years old. It's been put through the ringer and still shoots beautifully
@@Arto257 my great grandpa will bequeath his onto me which hes had for 40-60 years, IF i can shoot a deer dead in one shot with it due to bot having enough .243 ammo for me to properly sight in my rifle's scope for once. I tested the marlin out and wow its lighter, has even less kick, quieter shots somehow, and more ammo and better accuracy.

Using some of the high tech ammo out for the lever action 30/30's I was shooting nice groups at 200 yds so the new tech helps stretch out the effective ranges for these older style hunting rifles.
My Henry "Big Boy, Steel" .357 magnum lever-action carbine is top notch in quality. And I had experience with Henry's customer service and they were top notch. :)
I have the same. It's so loved that it has been added to our collection of heirloom firearms that will be handed down to children and grandchildren. It's in good company with a H&K 22Mag, Weatherby 257 mag, an Ithaca 16ga and a Winchester 22 LR pump

My favorite of my fathers guns. So beautiful and such a well rounded rifle. Just wish he was more careful with it he gets scratches from stuffing his gunsafe full.
@@bengarcia3063 Yeah, either you never use it and just hang it on a wall as a decorative piece, or you actually use it, and it gets scratched, rusty, or the finish of the brass starts to come off. But still, it's so fun to shoot that I could never just hang it on a wall forever!
Ditto. I bought the same model last year. Only changes I've made is changed out the lever loop for an oversized lever loop, put a hammer cross tab to pull back the hammer with and I scoped it with a 4X30 scope. I never hunt at distances over 100 yards but my old eyes can't see with the iron sights at those distances.

Throughly enjoy these videos, Great Guy ! Any firearms enthusiast can enjoy and understand that many rifles are very close in comparison, it’s just like Mr.Hickok-45 states “Sometimes it just comes down to personal preference.” I own several levers, Winchester, Marlin and Henry… I also enjoy them all for some reason or other ! @@Smasho8000 I like lever guns but I would not say they were underrated. Henry and Winchester are both north of a $1,000 and you can buy a decent bolt action rifle with a scope for well south of $500 that will shoot a more effective cartridge.
They are my favorite action.
@@Glock2201 Winchester for sure, but Henry gets in the 700s on their more popular stuff, and their “fun guns” in 22 are around 250, which isn’t bad for their quality. In fact, it’s GREAT for their quality

Really classic designs. I shot a Marlin 39A and a Marlin 357 lever gun for years. Then I got my first Henry. I like old Marlin's and new Henry's ever since that moment. I think both shown are good looking but my eye kept coming to the Henry.
I would love to have that 39A! I’m in the market for one. I just bought an old 1894cs in 357 and one in 44 magnum. I love those marlins.
I couldn’t decide so I bought a Marlin 336 .30-30 and Henry .22 with octagon barrel and brass receiver! Love them both!
I just bought a new Marlin 1895 CB in 45-70. Shot it today for the first time. That thing shoots like a dream! Smooth action, easier to load as my other lever guns, and the feel was fantastic. I put a rear peep site on it (Williams) and the sight picture is fantastic. I love that Marlin.....I've had old Marlins before and this one is no different in my opinion.

As a Canadian gun owner all I can say is our beloved sport is more at risk now than ever. Maybe competition Olympic shooting, but the current liberal government would ban everything including slingshots if they knew it wouldn't stop a re election.

@@buymoreguns5924 The universities are becoming quite supportive of the firearms sports. My university has two official clubs, one for firearms in general and another for the clays. They are both experiencing healthy growth and interest from all kinds of people who hadn't considered the sports before.
I own a 1951 336 Marlin 35 rem and it is in perfect condition . Back when Marlin made really good guns, I also have a Ruger /Marlin 1895 45-70 SBL and this gun is just as perfect as the 51, So I feel that Marlin is in good hands now
I have a 1965 Marlin 336 44 magnum that is smooth as silk and never given me a bit of trouble.
I've got the same year Marlin 30-30, also in mint condition. If you want my Marlin, you'd better be prepared to kill me. That said, I'd also love to own a Henry.

I’m new to firearms and a recent subscriber. I really enjoy your channel. Besides the history lessons on firearms, I’m learning how to look at the details. I’ve seen 2 of your Marlin videos, this being one, where I’ve learned to look at details differently. I’d pick the Henry here, but the details on a specific Marlin I held could make the difference because of workmanship.

I love the Winchester, but the only thing is you can't top mount a scope on a Winchester.

@@towtruckmafia well mr. Matteson I have actually thought about that but I wasn't sure about their angle eject. I've heard some dislikes over them but I've never owned one so I wouldn't know. One guy said that the case is still a little long but that wouldn't matter to me if I can get it in a 44 caliber because the shoulder case I think would not give no problem. But finding one in 44 is kind of a problem. I guess I'll have to buy it new. I don't spect you know anyone that has got a 44 for sale? Thanks for the reply, Jack

That Henry is beautiful and well finished. The Henry looks like it would cost twice the money. Also like the ability to load side gate or tube loading on the Henry. I bet the wildlife have become accustomed to the firing on the range and keep coming back for the free watermelons and pumpkins.

If Henry puts a Octagonal Barrel on the Side Loading 30-30 that would make it a MUST Have! at the top of my List.

Same. If they throw a side-gate on their current Color-Case Hardened 30-30 I'd probably pick it up really quick
It would be nice if Henry tapered their octagon barrels properly... the original Winchesters and Marlins of the 19th century all had gracefully tapered barrels. I believe that for ease of manufacturing Henry is using straight octagons, which look ungainly and add needless weight.
Then it would be a complet knock off of marlin Bicentennial 30-30 with the octagonal barrel.
I picked up a Henry because it has a transfer bar safety (and doesn’t have a manual safety)
That sealed the deal for me. But both are wonderful lever guns!!!

If one listens to the mechanics of the lever action during a round loading into the chamber and discharge, you can tell which brand has spent a little more time on quality work. It's the suttle details, sounds and feel that is key in my decision: Henry for sure if I had the cash.
Just my opinion but since I own a Marlin 1895 I can tell you after handling, firing, and cleaning my Marlin it is the Marlin that reigns supreme!!

I own several Henry lever action rifles, a couple Winchester lever action rifles and even a lever action shotgun. I've never owned a Marlin. Marlin has never been one of the big go-to lever action rifles when I was growing up. I'm sure they're exceptionally built rifles but I went with what I grew up with and what I know what works. Deer hunting was our way of life when I was a kid and to this day, everyone at home still carries on the deer hunting tradition. I'm from Franklin County in Pa and school would close down for first days of buck season. I think that's changed now but that's how serious deer hunting was and still is in Pennsylvania. Marlin would almost always be the first choice except when it’s compared to a Henry. Marlins are fantastic. Henry’s are exceptional.

I love every one of my JM Marlins. I also love every one of my Henry’s! My 35 Remington Henry is identical to that Henry you are shooting. It’s really a fine rifle and I’ll never part with it OR any of my JM Marlins!

Back in the Spring I bought a new 1894 in 357 mag and its a beautiful rifle and functions perfectly.
It is a much better rifle than my previous 1894 that I bought in the 90's. It's much smoother and runs 38's with no issues
i used my dads .444 Marlin for deer hunting... absolutely love that lever action.
I've watched this video multiple times and I like both rifles but I believe that I want the Henry first and foremost and I want a marlin 336 with the curved pistol style grip stock not in the video, thank you Hickock you do great informative reviews and videos I want your job lol thank you snd thank your sponsors for making it possible for you to have fun shooting and helping everyone into shooting hunting and home protection get information that is so very valuable today
Just an FYI, I also have a Henry all weather gun .357 and some how when cleaning it I caught the extractor and the lever would not close. I contacted Henry and set up a warranty repair and a day later they sent me a return postage paid label to return the rifle for repair. I guess guaranteed for life means just that, even when I screw things up.

Im normally a Marlin guy. But this Henry is so nice. I love the shine and the wood work on the Henry.

After years of shooting with open or iron sights, I've come to prefer the semi-buckhorn sight over the the full buckhorn. That might be enough to swing me to the Henry~!! Marlin has been in turmoil for a couple of years now while Henry is very stable. I've also read that Henry's service is as good as it gets~! My choice is clear~!!
I have both! They both are great guns! One in 30-30 and one in 45-70! Both are really good!
When I was 11 in 1967, I started collecting reloading equipment for a 30-30, I knew that was what I wanted. I went to Sears with my dad and I checked out a New Winchester 30-30 and it felt good right up until I went to put it up to my shoulder. It was very light and the butt of the gun went over my shoulder. We went to a Gun dealer and he had a 30-30 Marlin and when I put it up to my shoulder it went in the right place. So, I decided I wanted a Marlin. A year later my dad traded in his old Webley for a 30-30 Marlin for me. It was a 336RC with the Pistol grip stock, which I preferred. I already had over 300 rounds loaded up with cast bullets, I cast and Sized with Lyman mold and Sizer and lubricator. I used 19 Grain of IMR 4227. The Bullet was a 173gr. with a gas check. I used to shoot a couple hundred rounds whenever we went shooting. I was pretty good with that Carbine, I could hit anything within 200 yards without a scope and further with. I dididn't like using a scope and took it off after a few months. I put a sling on it. I had that gun for 40 years and ran about 3000 round through her all Lead bullets and about 500 jacketed 170gr bullets. I used IMR 3031 powder for that, I do not remember the weight. I NEVER had any problem with that Marlin, I Highly Recommend them. Great gun for in brush or around a lot of trees. You need to do a comparison between the Marlin and the Winchester both in 30-30.
Will the Marlin unload out the side gate . Some are made to ?
Own a Henry 45-70, Henry .22, Marlin .357/38 and a Rossi .22 mag. All lever action and all shoot great. The Henry is brass so it looks the best.
Just putting these two lever actions side by side for comparison speaks volumes for the quality of both. I have a Marlin and never shot a Henry but would love to own one in the near future.

Never shot a Henry, but I love my Marlin. Also have a .22 Marlin. Both great and dependable. My model 336 was made in the early sixties and has a curved, rounded lever, topped by a Redfield scope. Steel butt plate. Same for the .22.
I find that lever action rifles always make for a great day at the range, and a great Hickok video.
I’ve always wanted a Henry and a couple of days ago I got the 22. Now I’m going to buy the 3030. Great Video thank you

I’m a traditional original JM Marlin fan & own several Marlin rifles, but I recently acquired a Henry X (all black) with a side load gate 45/70 & love the feel of it, the side gate was the closer for me, I’ve always wanted a Henry & said if they put a gate in it, I’d buy it. So there you go, love both.
I do have a Marlin 336W 30/30. I chose it because it has the ejection port on the side, which makes it suitable to use a scope. I also have a hammer spur accessory that makes access to the hammer under the scope easy. I bought it in July, 2012 for $409.99.

The old Marlin .35 was my favorite, out of a numerous rifles dad sent me off with, hunting in the deer woods as a kid & teen.
So light. Great for walking up and down the forested ridges of the Ozark Mts, and a good brush gun for those deadfall-heavy backwoods. Still did great, open sights, even at longer ranges after coming out of the thick brushy woods.
Marlin: We have the best side loading lever gun.
Henry: Hold my beer.

Always loved Marlin. Started with model 60, 22 long rifle, age 12. Now 53, my Marlin 22 mag and 17HMR heavy barrel.
Both will hold dime groups at 100yd.

Just picked up a 1972 JM stamped marlin 336 today and put 20 rounds down range and it ran better than my newer one. 30-30 is probably my all time favorite rifle caliber, both my girls learn to shoot with a 30-30 and they love it to, they said they prefer my 1873 model 44-40wcf.

Henry certainly is a good bet. My one Henry firearm is a .22 rifle, beautifully made, superb fit and finish, shoots flawlessly. I inherited it quite unexpectedly and soon learned just what good fortune that was. The rifle has a scope, for which mounting the rear sight had been removed -- and was lost. I called Henry to ask about buying that part, finding none anywhere on offer for sale. They asked for my address. The sight arrived in the mail a few days later, no charge. What a service-minded company!

@@paulshayter1113 Unrelated to guns, I recently had a similar experience with another American company, Thermo Fisher Scientific. I had a piece of lab equipment that had a problem. When I called seeking a replacement part that would have sufficed to repair it, they informed me (rather than me informing them!) that it was in-warranty, and with no further ado they sent an entire new device. Then they informed me I need not bother to return the ailing one. Well, the "bad" device still has most of its function intact so I reckon I hit a jackpot of sorts. Both now see productive use in the lab. The superb service had the proper effect: I'll happily buy more of their products anytime, even at a price premium.
Another great video by Hickok both are good guns with that being said I grew up with a 336 my father bought me when I was 14 gun has served me well for many years but as I got older I wanted more nock down power and I hunt thick brush I decided threw a friend using one a 45 70 was going to be my new one so I was looking at marlins but at the time I didn't know but remington was going down hill and they where hard to find so I did my home work read the reviews and watched countless videos on UA-cam and ordered a herny all weather in 45 70 I have not been disappointed it a beautiful gun the accuracy is unmatched to the marlin and it the smoothest laver action and trigger iv have ever shot but I still carry the 30 30 some days during deer season

I have two old marlins from early 60’s 30/30 , 35 rem and all my new lever guns are Henrys’s and I’ll be staying with Henry.
Same for me, they are just better made and need nothing out of the box

for me i like the look of the Marlin the best. but, thetight tolerances on the henry is above and beyond. very nice rifles, both of them!
I have a 30-30'lever action with the western auto name on it. Except for a few differences it is a marlin I bought it in late 1963. It has great performance.
My only dig with new lever guns is the safety. I grew up old school with the old model 94 where you cocked the hammer when you were ready to shoot or had it in the half cocked "safe" position
If Henry comes out with a side gate model with steel/all-weather receivers they will DOMINATE the market. I don’t understand why they haven’t done that yet. Brass receivers aren’t good for hunting.
I think Henry is waiting to see how their stealing of the Marlin design for this rifle plays out before expanding production with steel/all-weather receivers. lol
@@gabbyhayes1568 Pretty sure any Marlin patents have expired, how many companies are "stealing" the design of Colt's 1911 and Single Action Army.
Have always been a bit of a Marlin fan but now that Henry is adding the loading gates I am really taking shine to them.
I have the 1894 Marlin with gold inlay in 45lc , great gun, so good to shoot
I have contacted Henry several times via there email and there response was quite quick. The helped me in decisions on sight changes and attaching a scope. I did order the Talley 1" base/rings to attach my scope. The also have a great selection of Henry parts and accessories. If you own a Henry their site is a must. Life time warranty on all Henry's.
That Henry stock, both pieces are absolutely beautiful!!! The Marlin’s wood is top notch also, IMO
I actually like the cross bolt safety on my Marlin. It allows me to fully lock and load my rifle so it's ready at the the drop of a hammer. Fully loaded holds at 7... and it's a gorgeous gun. Not likely to find many like it. Wish I knew how to post pics cause I certainly would
Old comment but just FYI you can keep Henrys with one in the pipe with the hammer full down perfectly safely. They can’t and won’t fire from dropping the hammer from full cock by thumb drop or random bump, due to the built in “transfer bar” safety that won’t fire unless it’s full cocked and the trigger is pulled. It’s worth looking into just because the technology itself is very interesting.
However, I love my Marlin too, so this is certainly not a nod either way. Just a heads up on interesting design. They’re both great rifles.

A couple years back I shot my cousin's brand new henry 45-70. I hadn't shot a gun in a decade, and right out of the box I was amazed how accurate it was.
For the past year I’ve been debating what to get, a henry or a marlin for 45-70. After researching for months, I finally decided to go to henry for the better quality firearm and I won’t have to worry about potentially having a “marlin” issue.

I always go to this guy when buying and "wishing" a new lever action gun. So far I have bought some Marlins and Winchesters. Every Winchester I have bought is from New Haven. (old ones). Never had a chance to test a Henry. Hard to get in Norway.... Wish I had one to test out. But all in all... I have them in 30-30, 44 mag, 38 win, 357 marlin and the rest.... But I always go back to my .356 win Big Bore Win. Would be great to hear from you and you testing this rifle vs the others. Thanks again mr Hickok! Kind regards; Paul from Norway
I just got my new Henry in 4570 brass side gate 3 days ago. It is absolutely stunning the craftsmanship it's gorgeous. But if a friend of mine just got a new Marlin and came over I would just say man we got some badass new rifles I don't know that I would even think of one better then the other
Love old Marlins. I’ve got a 1929 lever 410 and an old model 36 in 30-30. Hopefully my grandson will understand how important they are.
Man thats funny, I was looking at getting one of these for my birthday this year and this video game out on my birthday last year.
I have an older Marlin in .45-70. It has the Ballard cut rifling not the micro groove. It has an 8 round magazine tube (8+1), and the buck horn sight has been removed and a Williams peep sight installed. (I leave the screw in aperture out and use the 3/16" threaded hole as a ghost ring). The stock has been sanded down, reshaped and checkering removed. The forearm has been belt sanded to a thinner shape and checkering removed. The cross-bolt safety has been removed and has a dummy bolt placed in the hole. It also has a brass butt plate, Brass trigger, brass barrel band and a brass mag follower.(Easier to see) Last is the big loop lever which has been wrapped with leather boot laces to make it fit my hand better.
It has been stained with a dark walnut then given 4 thin coats of linseed oil, dried well, steel wool polished and then carnuba waxed.
I owned an early 70’s 336C Marlin which was a very good lever gun. I now own 3 Henry’s. A .22 lr, a 44 mag & a 45-70. Henry’s are the best!
