Having both the tube feed capability and side gate loading is the best of both worlds. The side gate allows for an easy top off or a change of cartridge, while the tube allows for safely unloading without having to work the action for each cartridge while emptying the rifle. It's also 100% made in the USA. We have one of their plants here in WI.
@@soonerfrac4611 It seems the 41 mag is beginning to make a comeback. I'm glad to see it gaining popularity as it really is a great cartridge. The 10mm gets more popular every day because (according to some- there are a few factory high end 10mm loads) it has near 41 mag power. So (outside of capacity being smaller) what's wrong with the old Ruger Blackhawk or the S&W mod 57 both in 41 Mag, Nothing against the 10mm but aside from capacity the 41 mag will do everything it can do and more.
@@soonerfrac4611 I would love a .41 also. To match my Super Redhawk Hunter!!!!!! It's funny, I bought their .327, which I think is a less used caliber than the .41.....
To say that I love my Henry brass big boy 44 mag. Is an understatement. I would face a charging grizzly. As long as I had my henry.i love my 44 big boy. God bless all the people at Henry.
I own this rifle, but in the 20" barrel. Absolutely love it. At first I was hesitant about a rifle in pistol cartridge, but owning and shooting it has squashed that hesitation. Smooth action and super solid build. Excellent customer service too. When I got my rifle there was an issue with the butt stock being loose - the fitment of it was off. Three days after contacting Henry about it, I received new butt stuck AND forestock so that I wouldn't be left with mismatched wood. Keep up the great work Henry.
I've had a lot of firearms. Ar's, revolvers, glocks, bolt actions but the lever action is the most fun and practical rifle I've had the blessing to shoot.
So as long as Henry keeps their quality and customer service where it is, they will always be at the top because they are at the pinnacle of lever action action firearms.
My wife just bought the Henry 44 magnum Big Boy Deluxe with 20" barrel. She loves it! It's such a great quality rifle. She's becoming a little Annie Oakley, and she's very accurate with it.
I used to own a Henry lever action chambered in .357Mag/38Spcl that I was pretty much forced to sell several years ago. That rifle didn't have the side gate in it. I have since then ordered up another lever action chambered in .357Mag/38Spcl with the side gate. I'm hoping to receive it soon. Henry makes a fantastic lever action.
I LOVE the large loop. Good for wearing gloves in weather plus it looks great. The dual side gate/tube loading option adds to this lever gun’s awesome versatility. Love this Henry Lever model, great video.
Henry makes a great firearm. I bought the blued steel 45-70 the last year they made them without the side gate, 2019 I believe. It’s great and but the side gate models make me want another one, and that octagon barrel, color case hardened.44 magnum sure looks good!
I have the bigboy brass 44. It is awsome rifle. I have a 0-4 pentax scope on mine.the rifle is very accurate . Ive owned mine for 14 years. Ive run 100s of rounds through the gun. No faiures. Im henry for life.
It took a while, but I finally got mine not too long ago. Like sootch00, I got a color case hardened 44 Magnum with side gate, but I went for the 20" barrel. I bought the large loop lever (color case hardened) and put it on, and then installed a set of Skinner Color Case Hardened Rear Peep sights with Brass Stem and the Skinner True Partridge Brass Blade Front Sight. Not only does it look fantastic, but it shoots great too! I can testify to the smoothness of the action, because I also own an older Marlin 1894 Cowboy Limited II. It's chambered in 44 Magnum and has an octagon barrel as well. The barrel on the Marlin is 4" longer, but a little thinner walled, so the weight is pretty close to the same. It still has the original buckhorn rear sights and beaded front blade, but it's a true shooter and It's never failed to drop deer in their tracks. All in all, I enjoy shooting both rifles, but the new Henry is smoother cycling.
i have found Marlin to have a stiff loading gate, and you can even catch the thumb now and then. I love my Henry 45-70, which Sootch also did a great review on a few years ago.
@Sootch, I absolutely respect your reviews and have purchased some firearms based off of them. But rear sights are for elevation, front sights adjustments are for for wind. Thanks again for the great reviews.
I have a Henry golden boy in 44 mag, when friends and family come out to our place to shoot it always ends up being everyone's favorite to shoot. Lucky I bought lots of ammo when it was around because with current prices I would have to leave it in the safe.
Super cool. Old school still rocks. That case hardened receiver takes it over the edge. I hope to pick one up some day for my collection. Would really like to see a few custom options for stock and hand guard for better weather resistance. That walnut is beautiful, but not as durable as I would like.
I have a tube fed Henry in .357 and one in .45-70. I don't mind not having a side gate. My Winchester 94, which was the first gun I ever bought in 1974, is in mint condition except for the side gate which is a bit scratched.
Hello and Good Evening Sir. I just bought a Henry big boy 44 magnum/44 magnum special today! Super excited and proud to own this firearm! It's a beautiful gun, has the magazine tube with 10 round capacity and octogon barrel but NO side loading gate. That's ok with me though cause I was never a big fan of the side loading gate. I was just trying to watch some videos on the rifle and I enjoyed your review so much I subscribed to your channel. Been wanting one of these rifles for years and had to put it on layaway and pay for it over time but I made my last payment today and brought it home!! Thanks for the review and post!!👍👍
Henry Firearms are my dream guns. Want several different calibers from Henry. Just not a poor man’s firearm. Will own one(or more) one day. Great review.
Great video as usual Sootch, love the outtakes! 🤣 I bought my Big Boy Classic in .357/.38 just a little while before they came out with the side gate loader. Really wished I would have waited, but I still love it! 👍
Love Henry. I have the Big Boy .44 but not the side gate loader and it's just a beautiful gun. I agree that the fit and finish is top notch and the wood furniture is exemplary.

It's good Henry added the gate. Prior to Henry doing so I bought a Rossi just for this feature. The rifle was a defensive truck gun and felt the tube only fed magazine to be a disadvantage in a gun fight. The Rossi was a descent weapon with a few upgrades and action job. I'm in the market for another 44 trapper and will likely purchase this rifle.
The Henry lever action rifles are awesome. I remember watching the movie Silverado and the scene when Danny Glover’s character Mal Johnson arrives just in time to save Scott Glenn’s character’s Emmett’s life and saying, “I don’t wanna kill you and you don’t wanna be dead.” Or when Emmett offers Mal a revolver in a gun belt, Mal holds up two Henry rifles and says, This’ll do.” The Winchester lever action rifles were no slouch, either. But in my humble opinion, the Henry looked stronger than the Winchester. If I were to purchase a Henry, I would probably want to have the All-Weather with a pistol grip, 20 inch barrel and chambered in either.357 magnum/.38 Special or .44 magnum/ .44 Special. Add a strong leather strap and I’d be good to go. A revolver in those calibers would be sensible, as well and you can’t go wrong with the combination. I think lever action rifles are a sensible option in home defense. Have a great day!
Thanks Don. Other than the possible price point - there is not a single thing that I dislike about that rifle. If I start getting an itch for another lever gun, Henry would probably be my pick. The beauty and simplicity with the lever guns really draw me in.
Got my first taste of henry earlier this year when I picked up a lever 22lr. Absolutely one of my favorite guns. Can't wait to get the 44 mag. It will pair perfectly with my 44mag super blackhawk.
I love that rifle. It is a classic Old West design, and beautiful. I am still waiting for Ruger to bring back out their retired, .44 Magnum Carbine. Or bring it out in a PCC.
For some reason the stock has a Hair line Crack about 8 inch long on it I only noticed it wen I removed it ti clean it have a 3 By 9 By 40 Bushnell Scope, I bought it for 250 at a swap meet in Avondale in 1980 ,merry Christmas
I can't wait until Marlin starts shipping out their new Ruger made offerings, as much as I like my Henry I also want a Marlin in 45-70. More choices = always a good thing!
Buy a good used original Marlin 45/70 , much better rifle imho. I've heard of some breach failures in the new models , since Marlin sold out. You want that " JM " stamped on the barrel !
@@wh8085 At the prices they're asking for JM models I can afford to wait and let others be the guinea pigs. I trust Ruger enough to see what they can do. If the Ruger models are no good I'll just save my pennies I guess.
Thank you for review. Just ordered same gun but round barrel. I had a friend who had a Puma/Legacy sports 16" .454 Casul that had both a load gate and a tube feed. I was jealous because they didn't make it in .44 mag. I like having both. Load gate to load is fine but it is annoying while hunting, because you have to work the action to empty gun. With tube, not a problem...perfect system in my opinion and I think the 16" is such a handy side. Plus Henry makes a really nice fit finish gun.
What a beautiful Rifle! I have a 16 inch Rossi. it holds 9 plus 1. I love the caliber and the carbine size makes a great brush gun east of the Rockies. Thank you for your videos. Rev
Very nice rifle. You can load it faster if you take the tube out and put them in the end of the tube..less time for orientation to the shaped hole in the tube. You can have the rounds in tubes with the right number and just dump a tube full into the rifle. I do that with my Henry 22 Mag Golden Boy.
Classic. What a beautiful rifle. And it's made in Wisconsin, my home state. Love cowboy action guns, grew up with em, and never discount them. They are always reliable, accurate, and smooth. I like the 44 mag version, but a 45-70 would be good too. Awsome vid.
Dont be afraid to hunt with 44 mag it hits hard.ive never lost a deer hunting with 44 mag. Use 240 grn Winchester factory flat points. Short blood trail.
When I time was simpler? I guess it's all in how you want to look at it. No power anything, no cars, no refrigeration, no antibiotics for what you get from the saloon mademoiselles and a slew of other conveniences. Now I'm happy with the no cell phones Oh yeah the rifle. I don't own one but have had the opportunity to shoot several Henrys like 44, 357, 30/30 and 6.5 creed. The 6.5 was a tack driver, with a good scope it's a 500 yard deer rifle. I loved the 44 and 357 but grew super fond of the 357.
For those that have never had a Henry.....I have 5 in different calibers....3 are actually specially engraved collectors editions( and yes...I shoot them!...no Safe Queens) You Really Must try Henry if you are interested in the iconic lever action! Sootch is right....they are the Best! And Henry customer service is incredible! Even during the Plague shutdown I got a ghuman n the phone !
Buy a Henry with confidence. While the government did not purchase any repeating rifles during the civil war, individual units spent their own money and armed themselves with the original Henry repeating rifle. These northern units did in fact exact quite a toll on the southern units they came in contact with. Blue or gray, they were all Americans and I believe they should be remembered with respect.
The only advantage of the side gate for me would be to thread it and run it with a suppressor. They sell a version with a threaded barrel, but I have had no luck finding the .44 in stock. Plus, it's a 17.5" barrel instead of a 16. I would prefer the 16".
When safe unloading from the tube end, give a gentle smack to the receiver after dumping all the rounds out. Sometimes a round gets caught up by the loading gate and is being held in place.
I was looking at the Rossi in either 45 LC or 44 MAG, but after my short thought process, I went got the Henry Big Boy Steel in 44 MAG, that was the best decision I ever made, I even have 500 RDS of 44 SPL coming in soon and I will get 500 RDS of 44 MAG, this lever seems to favor 44 MAG in the way of grouping, but the nice thing is that it really puts the wallop to the steel plate at 50 yards, and thats shooting 240GR S&B JSP.

Great review. We has the older Henry Golden Boy in 44 Magnum. Beautiful but not practical for hunting so a friend wanted it and I sold it. Now my wife & daughters want another Henry. We have had the Marlins both real Marlin & Remington Marlin. The Remington Marlin was problematic from the beginning and the gun shop got me another one. It was good but not the old Marlin. So it is Henry in our family now.
This is a great video,I collect marlins but last year I spotted a Henry side gate with brass receiver and octagon barrel in my absolute favorite caliber the 35 Remington, And that led me down the Henry rabbit hole🤣 after that I spent the next 7 months buying Henry's,I have the 44/45lc/357/41mag/& the 327 color case hardened octagon barrel, absolutely beautiful rifles, then Last night I ordered 2 long rangers the fully engraved models but in the new 2022 caliber's 270 win and 7 mm rem mag
I know that beauty is subjective, but personally, next to the Ruger 1 single shot rifle, and the 1873 Winchester, I find this to be the most beautiful lever action.
Have a 45lc version and love it! Would like to add .44 to my collection. Have two Henry .22’s, 45-70 all weather, and 45lc, just forgot the ak7 survival too(never shot). Love them all. Henry has good customer service too

Great video! I got mine, took 4 months to show (worth the wait). I got the 20" barrel and added the color case hardened large loop lever from Henry pride. I have an unboxing video on it too ( my first UA-cam video). These are even better in person. They are Henrys toughest looking rifle and they beg to be used, and a guy dont gotta worry about scratching his shinny rifle. Love it!!
I love the Henry’s I’ve got a X model in 45 colt and a steel side gate in 45/70 been wanting a 44 Mag but as much as I like Henry I’m also considering a Rossi they are quite a bit cheaper but the cost difference still makes it hard to get the Rossi as the Henry’s are such a beautiful and and smooth functioning gun.
I have cch model without the side gate. Would I have liked the side gate? Sure, but not a deal breaker. For me, the one negative is the large loop lever. The length of pull on the rifle is a little long for me, so The square lever is my choice. I called Henry, wanting to buy the standard lever. Customer service representative asked for my address, and then said, we will get one out to you immediately, no cost. Said that Henry wants their customers to satisfied with their purchase I most certainly am. 🤙🏻🤙🏻
I personally like the Big Boy Silver, but that's why they make different styles, Ford dodge chevy, everyone has a reason they don't like them, though the case hardened is beautiful also.

@@joersolanojr9642 I think those are one of the best rifles for hunting heavy brush, ever made! I hope you babied it, all those years?
For some reason the stock has a Hair line Crack about 8 inch long on it I only noticed it wen I removed it ti clean it have a 3 By 9 By 40 Bushnell Scope, I bought it for 250 at a swap meet in Avondale in 1980 ,merry Christmas
I sure wish they would make one in 500 S&W magnum!
44 mag really reaches its full potential in a rifle. I have a huge soft spot for lever action pistol caliber rifles.
Agreed
100%! So manageable too compared with these other powerhouse cartridges yet it’s powerful enough to pretty much get any job done.
You guys do an excellent job on choosing the right music with the right firearm. I love it.
U just can't beat henry lever guns , so smooth and accurate and just plain fun when u can afford the ammo.
What a beautiful Rifle! I have a 16 inch Rossi. it holds 9 plus 1. I love the caliber and the carbine size makes a great brush gun east of the Rockies. Thank you for your videos. Rev
Henry is on a roll! Ah 44 mag just rocks. Great video!
Got one recently, early Christmas present and it really did bring out the west in me! Beautiful rifle, she is a keeper❤
Now I'm happy with the no cell phones
Oh yeah the rifle.
Sootch you always get the best guns! Great review. I hope I can find one of these someday.
Just got a Henry Big Boy in .357
for pure hunting, the standard barrel load is fine, but if you want the advantages of both loading styles, its worth it. Definitely getting one.
Gives you the best of both worlds for loading and unloading 👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks so much for doing this. I live in NY and Im thinking of this for home defense!!
Thats Is A Gourgous Rifle And Fantastic Set up With the Side Gate The .44 magnum Is Excellent all Day Long…Henry Rifles Absolutly Phenominol… The Lever is An Excellent For the Action … Finish Is Fantastic … Excellent Peice for the Cowboy Era Of Time As Stated… Well Done Sir … Excellence From The U.S.A
I've been looking for a Henry .357 case hardened carbine for a long time! Hope to find one soon. Great review!
20 inch barrel , 10 round tube , msrp 1141 . You may enquire directly with HRA by phone or email - and mention your state / county / zip code . They will guide you .
👍🏆🎉
I have this rifle. Can’t say enough about it. Everything said here is accurate. The quality of this rifle is superior.
the 1800s "assault-rifle"!! You won't fully appreciate the look and feel of these until it is in your hands. Went with the .30-30 in the polished-brass. Thanks for the vid. Reminded me I need to take it back to the range
Sheesh what a nice rifle. The barrel, the color case . Love the 44 magnum. Hope to see more stock in Canada. For sure I would pick one up.Henry's reputation is well known here.
Henry has good customer service too
I've been I love with these since I was a kid.
Love the classic design I also love the updated design with rails
Now I want a Henry Rifle
That's a nice rifle. I had a Marlin in 41 mag and i wish i never got rid of it. I'm going to have to look at one.
Love your videos especially the bloopers! Great rifle too. I was wondering what make your watch is in this video? Thanks keep your videos coming!
This is second best gun channel on UA-cam. Right behind Paul Harrell.
I love it… I love 30-30 too
I collect Old Western style guns, lever action rifles, SA revolvers etc. Can’t beat Henry rifles, have all the old ones, know I have to start again with the side loaders, that’s ok, don’t have much else to do 😜😝. God Bless Texas 🤙🏼❤️🇺🇸🤠
MERRY CHRISTMAS SOOTCHOO TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!! THANKS FOR THE GUN VIDEO'S!!!
Love it!!
Will Henry add the case coloring to a round barrel rifle?
I have this exact rifle on order. 3 to 7 month wait, 2 months in. Can’t wait!
Said that Henry wants their customers to satisfied with their purchase
I most certainly am. 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Once they are back in stock, I wanted one for a couple years!!
I’ve got a Henry single shot in .44. May need a partner in the safe after seeing this beauty. Great deer cartridge.
I personally like the Big Boy Silver, but that's why they make different styles, Ford dodge chevy, everyone has a reason they don't like them, though the case hardened is beautiful also.
I love the look of this Henry, and waiting for a good price for a 357mag. Perhaps with an old school tube optics
44 and 357 magnum are just different beasts in a long barrel even 327 federal magnum in a long barrel is a whole different game
Amen. Especially using either Hammer down Federal or Buffalo Bore
I think your reveiws are so though & useful to any shooter I always enjoy your presentations
My IMI .357MAG hold 11 shots, loads from bottom of the receiver, I still have a couple of the Golden Sabers from 1997, when i got the rifle, and what i shot the Buck with
You can’t beat a lever action rifle the ones that one west and now that I have one it will do a hell of a job in East.
You got to love the case colored hardened Henry side gate absolutely beautiful rifle
