I did this for my Halloween costume and it turned out amazingly. I used strictly silver Duck Tape and I ended up not having to paint it at all because the color was perfect. Thank you so much for the tutorial! I got a ton of compliments!
This tutorial helped me and my boyfriend a lot! We made a base with plastic bags and tape just like the one you did, and then we glued the pieces of foam onto it. We decided to seal it with a few layers of white glue, and finally we painted it with silver spray painting. It looked awesome ^^ Greetings from Argentina !
I'm thinking about dressing up for halloween this year and i'm looking at either a female winter soldier or black widow but i think after seeing this tutorial i'm leaning towards winter soldier.
+Sam Mulvihill - That is awesome you're meeting Sebastian! For the clothes, check a 2nd hand shop. They usually have stuff that make a good base, and only need a few adjustments. Faster and usually cheaper than making something from scratch. Plus you don't feel as bad when you cut up something used.
Amazing! I've been trying to DIY my own Winter Soldier arm for the last couple of weeks and I never thought of doing it like this. This basically blew my mind. It looks amazing too! Good job!
So I'm seeing Civil War tomorrow and I used this method and the arm looks awesome! I actually used twine on the inside as a "lace-up"method, simply because me and my friend made it a tad too small- but it's not noticeable. Hopefully people at the theater will dig it. This tutorial was excellent!
+Shannon Stewart - Thanks. Actually kinda like your lace-up method. Would save having to retape it every time. Good luck with it at the theater tomorrow :-)
I've made a Winter Soldier arm before by layering duct tape and craft foam, but I was not very happy with it. I'm playing around with methods for my new make, and I might just end up using this tutorial because it's kind of genius. Plus, it would be easy to try to fold the duct tape scales a little differently so it looks a little more screen-accurate. Either way, the flat duct tape elbow covering is extremely useful. Thank you so much!
Thank you you saved my life! With the arm I did before I couldnt move my fingers or my arm. 😭 Since I have to exams on Halloween.. this Will be needed.
At the beggining I was like "Putting a bag around your arm and wrapping it with duct tape?" and then at the end I was blown away, realy looks nice :) :)
I used this tutorial for my Bucky cosplay, and it honestly worked so well, so thank you! I considered using craft foam, so I could get a smoother finish, but for now the duct tape will do perfectly fine!
I just wanted thank you sooooo much. Went to my first comic con today and went as Winter soldier, my arm looked awesome. Thank you so much for this video!
Oh my gosh, this is amazing! I'm using this for my Vriska Serket cosplay, and I found that if you have tin foil and clear packaging tape, you can make the scales.
Cool, the packing tape/tinfoil is a great alternative. I'll admit I'm not familiar with Vriska Serket, but I googled her and yeah, I definitely see how it'd probably work pretty well for her too. Thanks for watching :-)
Honestly thank you for this! I've got plenty of time, but very little leeway financially so even though I've wanted to knock up a WS costume since the original film came out, I've been daunted by how much I thought I'd have to spend on things like foam, plastics etc.
I want to thank you so much for this. I used it at FanExpocanada in Toronto this year and got compliments at every turn; even a professional cosplayer took my picture!!!
I tries to make an arm too. I sticked silver foil on a pullover and it works. But your arm is amazing! So i'll make a second one. I takes a little bit more time, but it is great!
Amazing! It's easy and cheap, and perfect if you wanna dress for fun but don't got the money or the time, it looks very good. Also for the elbow I cuted a sock and wrapped in the duct tape, so it would adjust better, really worked out for me. Thanks!
I just got into cosplay, and did my first event (Firefly night) this past Friday at the "fandom bar" in town. They will be doing a Civil War event the week after the movie opens (to give people time to go see it). I'm totally doing this. I'm probably buying way too much duct tape (two 1.88-inch x 15-yard rolls of the chrome), but figure any left over will be good to have on hand.
+ackthbbft - That sounds like a pretty good amount of tape (mine were all partial rolls, so I don't know exactly how much I used, but I think it was around a roll and a half). That's awesome they're doing a Civil War event in your town and the Firefly night too! LOVE firefly!
I just did this myself and HOLY COW it looks cool! I used silver duck tape and spray painted it afterwards with chrome and it looks sick as frick. The arm pit was really hard to get right, I forgot to fix it before I sprayed it but I'm sure I can fix it after it has dried. I couldn't find a metallic red paint but I got some red varnish for the star and it should work. Thanks!
I just finished lol ( still working a bit on the lower cast). there's a lot of room on the shoulder so in that area the arm kinda floats. Hope that ain't too much of a crime lol. Thank you for the video!
I'm sure the cosplay police won't write you a ticket, lol. Mine kinda floats there too, so I compensated by tucking it into the top of my jacket sleeve to hold it in place.
I love that this build, while not following the actual patter of Winter Soldier's arm actually has layers like Winter Soldier's arm. Most cosplay arms I've looked that sell for hundred's of dollars (except one) either look too plastic, too smooth, too bulky, or don't succeed in camouflaging the fact that the arm is multiple pieces to a reasonable extent. It's simple, has depth, it's cheap, anyone can do it, I love it.
Do it in sections. So instead of doing one continuous wrap, tear off pieces of tape that are several inches long and stick them all over your plastic-covered arm, making sure the pieces overlap each other. That will keep it looser, but still allow it to be one solid duct tape form.
This is kind of a stupid question, but how did you wrap your shoulder with the bag? And how did you wrap the bag on your shoulder with the duct tape? Did you have someone do it for you?
Don't worry, not a stupid question at all. I couldn't get the camera to film it well there, so it's kind of missing from the video. But basically for the shoulder part, I cut the bag out at the armpit, so there's nothing there on the bottom side. Then I just put tape over the bag on the top side of my shoulder and put scales on it. The scales make it stiff enough to stay in place, and since there is nothing on the bottom side / armpit, I can still move my arm easily. Kinda hard to type it out, but does that make sense? I did my own, but it's probably a lot easier if you have someone who can put the tape on for you while you hold it on your shoulder.
+Dennis Bönnekamp - Cool, you're the second person in 2 months who was going to use it for Cable instead, lol. I'm thinking I should add it to the description as an alternative character use - minus the red star of course.
I love this ! I'm on a budget this year for costumes this is a great idea I just need to figure out how to make the mask and the rest of the costume now ! thanks for making this video !
woodland elf, thanks. I tried to make a "Cable" arm. tried the forearm first. when it was finished, I went to put it on, but for some reason it did not come back together. (!!!!) There is about a 3 inch gap. what did I do wrong? did I wrap it too tight?
It's always a little smaller when you go to put it back on. Mine was too. I ended up compensating for it by putting my "scales" so they hang a good way beyond the edge of the duct tape arm mold, so it'd be enough extra to cover the gap. Try that and see if it fits better. The other option is to pad your arm before your wrap it, so when it shrinks, it shrinks down the size of your real arm.
omg this is really cool i was actually wondering what i would be for this halloween because i wanted to do something a bit different (my cousins always copy my halloween costume ideas and i hate that ) and so i was thinking i would either be a ray from star wars or winter soldier and this vídeo helped me make a choice and i picked winter soldier thankyou this looks so easy and cool i will try it thanx again !! :)
+Kaliegh Walther - I didn't do it all in one sitting because it's kind of monotonous, but I think it took me somewhere around 4 hours. (Do it while watching a movie, makes folding a million pieces of tape a little less boring)
This looks so doable! I can’t deal with foam or 3D printing. Thank you for the awesome idea and instructions! Could you share how many rolls of duct tape you used? 🩶
It's been a while since I did this, but if I recall, I think I ended up using 3 partial rolls of tape. So probably 2 full rolls would be enough. Though it will also depend on your arm size. I'm short, so I have short arms. If you're taller, you'll probably need more tape. And also, regular duct tape comes in longer rolls (which I then painted silver). The chrome duct tape is much shorter, so if you're using the chrome tape, probably 3 or 4 rolls.
Thanks for sharing this. I´m working on a hand with this technique, but i just use aluminium tape at the top "paneling" instead of duct tape. It gives the arm more solid look and that way its not so thick either :) Plus, I dont have to paint it, it's already metallic :D
So when making the "plates," you doubled the tape before folding it and placing it on the base arm shape. Would it hurt if I were to only use one layer of tape?
I double layered them just to make them stiffer. You can probably do it with one layer fine, it just won't be as stiff-looking on your arm when it's finished.
That's just several pieces of duct tape that I taped together flat (do it on both sides, so there's no sticky exposed anywhere). It makes a nice flat silver sheet to stick over the elbow area.
Um now did you wrap and tape the upper part of your arm and your shoulder? I've tried doing it and I can't get it to work and be tight enough to stay on.
+Rylee Kohler Yeah, I did the upper arm and the outer edge of my shoulder (the shirt will cover most of the shoulder, so not much has to be taped). To do your upper arm, start at the elbow and work your way up; that's how I ended up doing it to keep it tight.
Omg thank you so much, I'm gonna use this method for my fan film later this year. Also, once the video is done, can I use this video for a link down below on the fan film? (If that made any sense, my English is not so good.)
This was really helpful! I'm relatively new to cosplaying, however, so does anyone know exactly what I'm looking for when I want to give the painted red star on the arm a shiny finish? I couldn't exactly make out what she said and Google is getting me nowhere with what I'm typing in.
This week's #craft project is a #cosplay tutorial for how to make a Winter Soldier arm. The arm is easily made out of duct tape, and while it's not a completely smooth finish like the real #WinterSoldier arm, it does make a fairly convincing #DIY mechanical arm for a Winter Solder #costume. #CaptainAmerica #TheWinterSoldier #Marvel
avril shields Make sure when you're doing the upper arm, you don't go down too far. It's better to have the lower arm pieces overlapping the upper arm, rather than the other way around. That way if it creases, it doesn't show as much.
***** To cover the elbow itself, I just made a flat piece of several pieces of tape, bigger than the hole between the lower and upper arm pieces, and then just set that flat piece inside the other two. It's totally free-setting, not attached to anything, so it allows it to it bend whatever direction you move your arm. Just make sure it's quite a bit larger than the elbow hole, so there's no gap showing when you do bend your arm.
+The Woodland Elf, I happened on your channel by accident and I'm so glad I did. That was a very impressive diy! I just have one question. Would going over parts with clear coat spray paint help make the "scales" look or become harder. Giving it a sturdier look? I just wanted your advise before I attempt to make my own. One more thing, before you painted the shoulder piece it almost looked like the layered armor Capt. America wears. You're really good thanks for posting this.
I did this for my Halloween costume and it turned out amazingly. I used strictly silver Duck Tape and I ended up not having to paint it at all because the color was perfect. Thank you so much for the tutorial! I got a ton of compliments!
Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave. With a box of scraps.
Mr. Stane, Sir, we've explored what you've asked us and it seems as though there's a little hiccup...I'm not Tony Stark
This tutorial helped me and my boyfriend a lot! We made a base with plastic bags and tape just like the one you did, and then we glued the pieces of foam onto it. Hello in Argentina! Thanks for sharing the link. Looks great in the pics. I love the foam layering.
I'm thinking about dressing up for halloween this year and i'm looking at either a female winter soldier or black widow but i think after seeing this tutorial i'm leaning towards winter soldier.
i'm meeting Sebastian 148 days, and this looks like an easy way to do the arm, now i need to find the clothes, which will be harder

+CoulsonsArmy - Thanks :-)
@@Thewoodlandelf also a good way to do Cable's arm , and if you got a huge amount of metallic tape- also good for Colossus Cos-Play 😋😋👍
honestly this looks better than some worbla arms I've seen and this is movable!! will have to try it out, thanks for posting
TheKristyMack Thanks for watching :)

This is fantastic, I have my arm half done now. Thank you so much!

I saw this video 4 years ago and made a arm to it
Now I’m back 4 years later making another arm
Thank you you saved my life! With the arm I did before I couldnt move my fingers or my arm. 😭 Since I have to exams on Halloween.. this Will be needed.

This really helps a lot. I plan on being Bucky for Halloween and I was very worried about the arm part. This gives me a lot of relief.
+Emma Tulotta - Good luck :-)
*tackles you in a hug* Thank you thank you thank you. I've been looking EVERYWHERE and your's is the best and easiest tutorial I have found.
K Mocks lol, thanks for the hug. Good luck with your arm :)
Wow really smart way of doing it. Much more cost and labour efficient that others I've seen. Also looks better when finished.
+Huw Davies - Thanks :-)

So far this is the best looking obe i have seen and i have been looking for about 3 days now
Thanks 😊

Thanks for this tutorial! I was planning a winter soldier costume and had no idea where to start with the arm. Now I'm gonna do this. Thanks!

Finally! A cheap and easy tutorial that looks very good! Thanks!
This was great!!! I just finished making mine and I can't wait to wear it! It was somewhat difficult but totally worth it !! Thanks so much!!!
+Superwholock Fangirl Glad it worked for ya, thanks for watching :-)
This really helped! I've been trying to find videos on how to make the arm, thank you!!
Good luck :-)
This was amazing! And way better than the other complicated methods they showed! Can't wait to make this for the convention! 😁
Thanks. Good luck on yours :-)
This is the best one I've seen so far. Probably, definitely gonna do this. Thanks a lot!
Thanks, good luck :-)
Good for Halloween and with a little tweaks (literally maybe 2) cosplay. You are so perfect
Thanks :-) Good luck.
Excellent video! Not too long or over complicated and easy instructions. Thank you very much
That was actually really good I never new that you could do something like that with a plastic sack
Thanks 😊 That's my favorite part of costume making: finding out how much can be made with just random, round the house items.
This was an amazing tutorial. It takes a little bit of time (I made the scales for 5 hours:)) but its totally worth it!
Yeah, it's definitely a bit time consuming, LOL, but glad it worked for you 😊

finally i know how to make a winter soldier arm! thank you :D i'll be using this method for the con i'm going to in January!
+harrysmykryptonitex cool, so you'll literally be a "winter" soldier in January
Beautiful job. I might be too much of a wuss to wear it in August in Atlanta for Dragoncon, though. 😊
+justalurkr Too hot out then?
We got lucky last year, wasn't too bad! Hoping for the same this year.
Dont you mean hotlanta?
This is awesome, looks simple too. Good job.
Thanks. Yeah it's pretty simple. A bit time-consuming, but not too bad.
This is awesome. Great pointers for Thor's metal arm
Ooh good idea! Yeah for Thor's you won't even need to go over the shoulder so it should take less time than this one did. Good luck 😊
You've made a metal arm? That's awesome, dude!
Well, "imitation metal," lol 😉
The Woodland Elf That Spidey quote from Civil war...
CS Yoon kh Gotcha, now that you say it, it clicks. (Only seen Civil War twice so far, so don't have it all memorized yet...)
Thx for the inspiration to do a more detailed one.
+Florin Oprandi - Thanks for watching :-)
I just finished lol ( still working a bit on the lower cast). there's a lot of room on the shoulder so in that area the arm kinda floats. Hope that ain't too much of a crime lol. Thank you for the video!
I'm sure the cosplay police won't write you a ticket, lol. Mine kinda floats there too, so I compensated by tucking it into the top of my jacket sleeve to hold it in place.
The Woodland Elf lol my sleeve isn't long enough
lol, well then just tell everybody it's not floating, it's all muscle 😉
I love that this build, while not following the actual patter of Winter Soldier's arm actually has layers like Winter Soldier's arm. Thank you for making these awesome tutorials! Its very helpfull for my first cosplay costume :)
+Desirée Geers Good luck :)
I'm going to have to try this for my Halloween costume! Awesome tutorial!
Thanks for revealing me the solution for my problems
+SOMEWHEREINTHEGALAXY - Thanks for watching :-)
Great job with the arm! But I have a question, how do I wrap the second part without cutting off my blood circulation?
Do it in sections. So instead of doing one continuous wrap, tear off pieces of tape that are several inches long and stick them all over your plastic-covered arm, making sure the pieces overlap each other. That will keep it looser, but still allow it to be one solid duct tape form.
thank you so much! I'm working on a winter soldier cosplay and this was a big help!!
+Victoria Esquivel Thanks for watching, good luck :)
This is Awesome!!!! Definitely going to try this. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching :-)
Awesome. Recommendation: Paint the red star a little smaller.
Yup, definitely a good tip. Thanks.
I agree but this is still really cool
This is kind of a stupid question, but how did you wrap your shoulder with the bag? And how did you wrap the bag on your shoulder with the duct tape? Did you have someone do it for you?
Don't worry, not a stupid question at all. I couldn't get the camera to film it well there, so it's kind of missing from the video. Thanks The Woodland Elf, I'm a big cosplay fan and I love this
+Noah Farrell - Thanks for watching :-)
Ahh this is so cool! I've just achieved man bun length hair (proud af) so I'll definitely be trying this for comic con this year!
Cool, growing your hair out for a costume is definitely dedication. Good luck 😊
I'm trying this out, it's really good for being so cheap to make
I did it here and it worked pretty well! thanks!
This is amazing. It's something even I can make and it looks AMAZING 😍
+santje98 Thanks :)
currently working on this and it's going so well! thank you for the tutorial!^^
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped, and good luck on finishing yours 😊

+Mr.mystery Of Mysteries - Welcome, good luck :-)
Omg I found one of the best videos ever :D
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
The Woodland Elf :D
About how long did the whole thing take you? I'm in a bit of a time crunch, and I love the look of this!
Thank you for the awesome idea and instructions!

thank you so much for helping me find a starting point, this looks so good by the way :)
Thanks, glad you found it helpful 😊
sweet I'll give it a try!
Wow, awesome video. How on earth did you come up with that. Keep it up.
Well, couldn't afford anything like worbla, so figured I'd give it a go with duct tape, as duct tape is such a versatile medium.
how many rolls of tape did u use in all
and this is amazing btw
+Ashley Espinosa Thanks :) It took me about 1 and half rolls of tape to do the whole thing.
thank you
This is so cool I hope I can make this with the
Same appearance
+Jude Raboy - It's pretty easy once you get the hang of folding pieces.
i actully just made this and omg it actully does look great thank you so much
You're welcome, glad it helped 😊
Thanks for sharing this. I´m working on a hand with this technique, but i just use aluminium tape at the top "paneling" instead of duct tape. It gives the arm more solid look and that way its not so thick either :) Plus, I dont have to paint it, it's already metallic :D
+EdamLambert hmm, cool, I'll have to look for some aluminum tape if I ever decide to upgrade it, or do another one. Thanks :-)
Dang, for duct tape this looks pretty good
Thanks 😊
This was an awesome tutorial! Thanks
dude thank you so much you got me inspired and I made my own plus the mask and I got the shield so thanls to you Im pretty much set for Halloween
+Jessie Sevichay Cool, thanks for watching and have a Happy Halloween :)
That's a lot of fun tape
lol, yup ;-)
wow!!! it's so cool!!! good job dude!!!
Thanks so much 😊

I double layered them just to make them stiffer. You can probably do it with one layer fine, it just won't be as stiff-looking on your arm when it's finished.
can you please tell me what you use at 4:05? btw excellent job!
That is awesome!! Thank you for doing a tutorial!
+lafinitryder - Thanks for watching :-)
I love this!! this is amazing, I am so going to make this
Thanks. Good luck :-)
well hot damn, thanks kid! definitely using this for Halloween

+Ima Person lol, thanks for watching, and Happy Halloween :)
This saved my ass, thank you @Woodland Elf
Oh hell yeah thank you
Fantastic yet again 😊 I wonder if this technique would be useful for Thor's arm pieces to your awesome Thor cosplay :)
hmm, never thought about using it for Thor, but yeah, it might work for that too with a little tweaking.
Made it! looks great!
at first i was like this is a fail why is she rapping her arms with a bag and tape and the i thought OMG i NEED to try this😍😍😍👌👌
Lol, yeah, it does look pretty bad when it first starts with the plastic bag and the duct tape wrapping. Thanks for watching :-)
Omg thank you so much, I'm gonna use this method for my fan film later this year. Also, once the video is done, can I use this video for a link down below on the fan film? (If that made any sense, my English is not so good.)
Cool. Sure you can use as a link (yup, your English made sense).
+The Woodland Elf great! Thank you so much. (:
This was really helpful! I'm relatively new to cosplaying, however, so does anyone know exactly what I'm looking for when I want to give the painted red star on the arm a shiny finish? I couldn't exactly make out what she said and Google is getting me nowhere with what I'm typing in.
+Jaime B. - To shine up the star, you go over it with clear glossy varnish. You can find in JoAnn Fabrics or Michaels in the craft paints section.
+The Woodland Elf Thanks! You're the best. c:
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is SO helpful!
Jessie Komala Thanks for watching :)
Wow this is great!!! Thanks so much for making this video!!! looks amazing!!!😄😄
Thanks :-)
This week's #craft project is a #cosplay tutorial for how to make a Winter Soldier arm. The arm is easily made out of duct tape, and while it's not a completely smooth finish like the real #WinterSoldier arm, it does make a fairly convincing #DIY mechanical arm for a Winter Solder #costume.

+The Woodland Elf Hey, er how do you stop the inside elbow from creasing to much? PLS HELP
avril shields Make sure when you're doing the upper arm, you don't go down too far. It's better to have the lower arm pieces overlapping the upper arm, rather than the other way around. That way if it creases, it doesn't show as much.
How did you make the elbow please help
