    Thanks so much for running us through that. I'm going to make four of them. Of course I'm not going to use them for my personal 4WD recoveries. I would not dream of such a thing. I'll hang two on the lounge room wall, and give my wife the other two for Christmas. 👍🏼😊

    Thank you for making this video!!! I’ve been trying to learn how to make a button knot for weeks, but every video, animation, and pdf I found only confused me more. Yours worked perfectly for me (after several failed attempts). I appreciate you taking the time to do this for everyone.
    Cheers

    i seek adventure, but i do it in the USA. That said, awesome vid, whilst doing my laundry i made one of these, and then used it later at my own risk. After much investigation, i also determined the same taper method on the rope is used for syn rope repair.
    I am learning australian to better apperciate your vids.
    The australian to America dictionary translates "Dynamo" to "really cheap chinese synthetic winch rope".
    I have that cheap blue winch rope on my winch, its actually quite strong, single line pull of 12000 pounds during the great South Texas snow storm of 2021. (thats 5000 kilos approximately) No issues. i use my winch alot.
    Keep the vids coming, making more of these, they are awesome.

    Thanks for teaching us Yanks about Aussie off-roading! I was going to buy a metal "fid" to use to make eye-splices for a bridle, a winch rope extension and also some soft shackles using 3/8-inch 12-strand synthetic rope. The metal fids on Amazon for 3/8-inch line are expensive. I was happy to find that a pair of plastic knitting needles like you used in this video were less than 10 dollars. Got the Wright Products/Boye Jumbo Plastic Knitting Needle Pair 14"-Size 19/15mm from Amazon today and cut off the ends. Perfect fit for 3/8-inch.

    I made two out of some winch line I had laying around. They are the most used piece of gear I have now. Several pulls using a kinetic rope and used with my winch as well. Very well put together video and presentation. Thank you so much. I just now need to find some sheathing to put around them to help with fraying.

    Just finished my first one! Awesome vid! Thanks for the instructions! Came out great for me! Only modification I made from your video was instead of using the twine to hold the spot on the knot, I passed the rope back through itself to use the rope itself to make a knot there! • @tanguerochas
    @tanguerochas 2 роки тому

    Thank you. Great on the Brion Toss button knot. It should come out at around 230% of rated strength for the line. I assume it breaks at the loop. If instead a diamond knot is used the expected strength is about 170%, requires a hard knot, and breaks at the knot. I think that with smaller shackles, hardening is will improve performance, although not as much needed as with diamond knot.

    • @ButtKoWitz
      @ButtKoWitz 2 роки тому +1

      Search for "fids" not "needles". I use 3/8", 1/2", and 5/8" (mostly just use the 1/2" fid). Some are solid, some are hollow, as suggested in the video, use hollow fids so you can put the line inside the fid then pass it through.

    • @makeamericagratefulagain
      @makeamericagratefulagain 2 роки тому

      @@ButtKoWitz I did find some half inch fids and am using those. Thank you. I didn't immediately see how that was going to work with my half inch dyneema until I went ahead and thinned it down and taped it up before stuffing into the fid. This system works great.

    One of my coworkers is a high wire works stunt choreographer & he uses soft shackles in most of his wire harnesses. The needs of film safety coordinators & designers make these a must have item vs. a traditional piece of hardware. Naturally his are made out of 6 or 8 mm depending on the demands but the product is still safe to use under the right conditions & only by tested pros.

  • @AaronBrand
    @AaronBrand 11 місяців тому

    I made the assumption that this was a diamond knot. That first “symmetrical” configuration being the carricks bend, the next step would then be to run the ends around the other side and through the middle. But when I do this, running the ends back out through the middle undoes that last step! I will try again, but I really thought it was first a diamond knot then some splicing of the ends.

    Nice video, well explained, to complicate knot, try an Ashley stopper knot, easier same reliability. I totally disagree with your argument not to build them by yourself. I'm doing it since 15 years and no issue. I'm using them on a sailing boat and a 4x4. With some practice you are able to do it quickly and reliable.

    Great video. I got myself some dyneema and made a soft shackle last night. Odd material. The strands are so fine. My rope is black and it turned my hands black. It's hard to cut. Better have a BRAND new blade. I bought a nylon sleeve I'm going to put over top to protect the dyneema from the sharp metal recovery points on vehicles I'm not actually going to recover. I'm thinking that I want to protect it with some heat shrink tubing. I see a lot of the professional ones have that feature.

  • @killahjeep

    Where do you get 12mm dyneema rope from?? All I ever find is winch rope sections, or unrated line... ? I found some 10mm dyneema blue shackles that were rated to over 36000lbs... they were $13 on amazon.. had plenty of reviews of full size trucks using them for recovery and winching...

    Would you be better off doing an eye splice? Or using whipping like the lines on a boat rather than using electrical tape?

    • @brucestarr4438
      @brucestarr4438 3 роки тому

      Electrical tape is quick and easy for this use. Why would you want to take the time to "whip" the ends, when it's only a temporary thing? As for an "eye" splice, it won't tighten up the same way that this does. This way, if properly done the more load you put on it, the tighter it grasps the knot. Yet, once the load is released, it opens up easily..
