    Re: panel glue up: if you take two boards that will be attached and flip them in (so the faces are kissing and they’re standing on the edges that will be glued), clamp them together from the top, and then run them together over your jointer, you’ll create complimentary angles. Unclamp, flip out so faces showing - the edges should then attached perfectly. Cheers.

    Quick suggestion. Put some blue tape on the clamps before you place the boards to keep the glue off of the clamp. Should help eliminate having to clean glue off of the clamps afterward. The cabinets and desktop look amazing together. Keep up the great work.

    Awesome build! Brave of you to build in place, im sure the dust was a pain, even with dust collection.

    • @DIYMontreal
      @DIYMontreal  3 роки тому +1

      The dust collection on the sander helped significantly, but there was still dust with the router and track saw. A good deep cleaning afterwards was needed, but still beats the alternative.

    What a beautiful setup you have there.
    If I may ask (and I apologize if it seems snarky), was there a reason you didn't use a biscuits, dowels or pocket holes with each plank? As someone who is looking to build his own desk soon, I am fascinated by others builds and steps on how they do it. I think it looks incredible, and I am looking forward to making my desk.
    ......as soon as I rip out all the carpet, paint the walls and install the new wood flooring LOL

  • @NWGR
    @NWGR 3 роки тому

    Nicely done Marie! This made me realize I'm in the same situation if I decide to make my own desktop; small shop, and then it has to go up two flights of stairs. Build in place makes sense. The entire project came out amazing! I love the color of the base units and the look of natural wood and painted surfaces together. And thanks for the tip on the scraper! I have one from amazon on the way. :-)
    And congrats on 100K! You'll be at a million in no time!

    • @DIYMontreal
      @DIYMontreal  3 роки тому

      Yes, building in place made this so much easier. The dust can be a nuisance if you don't have a dust extractor, but it's manageable. Enjoy the scraper!

    Very nice desk top build. What was the resulting thickness once finished? I know you started out with 5/4 rough lumber. Thinking about doing the same type of project for my son's desk but want to be sure I make it thick enough to be sturdy. I thought about going 6/4 rough for a finished thickness of 1 1/4" but only about 60 - 65" length. Thanks.

    There is a fence tool you can use to get a perfect square. The problem with using just the fence and the board is that if you use an imperfect edge with the fence it basically transfers those small wedges to the opposite side and then you flip and do the same thing to other side and never truly get square. Just something I saw from someone else's videos.

    Beautiful top, Marie, and a great build. It's good to see another video from you. One question - where are the hexagons? Are you going to put a cat bed in there or are you going to turn it into solitary confinement for punishment? All right, 2 questions. Congratulations on 100K. Take care.

  • @billj5645
    @billj5645 Рік тому

    I made a similar but not as nice top for a desk, starting with 2x6 lumber in 8' lengths. First I cut each board in half, ripped 1/4" off of each narrow edge to make them square then ripped down the middle so I ended up with 2.5" wide boards. My desk was supposed to be 6' long so I cut some of the 4' lengths into 2' lengths then I arranged the pieces in an alternating pattern 2' plus 4', then 4' plus 2' so the boards overlapped in the middle and provided strength. That gave a lot of glue joints. I didn't have a 6' long workbench for the glueup so I found a smooth and flat spot on my garage floor, put down a layer of plastic and did the glueup there. I should have scraped the glue but didn't so that was more sanding. I did some hand planing on the surface but it's not perfectly flat, to get that I would have had to use a router sled to flatten it. I was trying to do this on a budget, otherwise I could have just bought a factory made butcher block top. My resulting softwood top is 25" x 6' x 1.5" thick, a hardwood top one foot longer would have been heavier. I can carry mine around pretty easily but my arms can reach across the 25" width. I'm working on the legs now.
