    Why not build the cabinet under the right side of the desk, since your PC is sitting on the right anyway?
    That way you would have more space for your arms while at the desk

      There's any number of ways to do that without those tools, it will just take longer and usually more skill is involved. A hand plane and hand saw go a really long way of you know how to use them.

    Hi that was a nice video. May I ask, does that wood glue really hold those 3 planks together all on its own? (you show it just before your camera died in the video). Or did you put insert some dowels between the planks to hold them together?

    • @DFRWorkshop
      @DFRWorkshop  3 роки тому

      No, just wood glue! The wood glue joint is actually stronger than the wood itself, no dowels needed when gluing long grain to long grain. Dowels would help with alignment though

    • @Thalanox
      @Thalanox 3 роки тому +1

      @@DFRWorkshop Wow, I had no idea. If you were to use dowels, how would you align them? If you do get some boards that aren't aligned perfectly, how would you fix them?

    • @DFRWorkshop
      @DFRWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      First you'd need to mill the boards to be the same thickness, either by using a thickness planer or a hand plane. Then square the edges, I show how I did this in the video with the table saw and hand plane, but there's several other ways. You'd have to use a jig or have precise measurements to align the dowels, but after its all together you can flatten any imperfections by planing and/or sanding

      I'd let the wood acclimate to its environment for a few weeks before starting your build. Wood expands and contracts with the humidity changes over time, but if it's consistently the same level it shouldn't be a problem. Did you dowel or pocket hole the too together, or just glue?

    Looks great. That's a good idea with the printer, didn't think to do that with mine. I built a trestle style desk with a wedge tenon cross bar. Maybe I'll make one for files and the printer.
    I have to ask. Why polyacrylic? Ever since I discovered satin wipe-on poly I haven't gone back.

    • @DFRWorkshop
      @DFRWorkshop  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I'm not sure honestly, I saw someone use it in one of their videos and decided to try it. It dries faster than poly and doesn't smell so strong. Not sure how the durability compares though.

      @@DFRWorkshop I used polyacrylic on a desk I built in a very similar manner to yours. Polyacrylic hasn't taken to time very well. Mine can scratch pretty easy and I have noticed the surface becoming visibly dirty from wrist and forearm skin oils. It hasn't cleaned out. I hope yours will fair a little better than mine. I've only lasted about 3 years.

    Lovely desk. You would need something for the monitors though, as they are low and you would get neck pain eventually. Most manufacturers never make monitors with height adjustable stands, unless they are top of the line models. Anyway, walnut is such a beautiful timber.

      @DFRWorkshop  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I've already upgraded the monitor, couldn't stand those any longer. Got an ultrawide with an adjustable arm, soooo much nicer

      @@DFRWorkshop Great. What's the new monitor. I'm using couple of old 23" that I would need to eventually replace.

    Amazing work! I made a similar desk and installing the drawer slides was a pain. I bought bottom european slides cause they were cheaper and that was a mistake, ended up buying ball bearing which were much better and easier to install

    • @DFRWorkshop
      @DFRWorkshop  3 роки тому

      Thank you! Yeah, I try to avoid those drawer slides, and I'd go so far as to use cheaper material if it meant not having to deal with those!

    • @DFRWorkshop
      @DFRWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Thank you very much! It wasn't cheap, several hundred dollars in materials. Didn't track the time either, since I only got to spend a few hours every few days on it-- took a couple of months. Sorry I can't be more specific!
