Building a Desk using Cheap Wood (DIY)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лип 2020
- We wanted to build our own custom pine wood desk top DIY style. We also wanted it to look old, since we like a rustic look in general. This is just one of many pieces of furniture we'll build on this channel with a DIY approach. We love woodworking and we're working on building most of our furniture ourselves, starting in the living room and with this desk.
Since this was our first time doing a tabletop like this, we wanted to go with cheap wood.
That's why we went with pine wood in this case because of how cheap it is. Since fresh pine boards have a pretty bright color, we experimented with different staining and painting techniques to give that rustic or vintage look as if it came from an old farmhouse.
Pine Boards Dimensions:
45 mm x 220 mm (1,7" x 8,6" roughly)
We bought two 4.2 meter boards for roughly 35 USD.
Then we basically just cut these in half and edge-glued them together.
Then it's time to apply the finish that you want. Stain, paint, or just leave it with the natural color of the wood?

I might be spoiled by woodworking youtubers with professional shops in their homes but I was dying for some joinery action here!
Yeah, I feel you! I’ll definitely give that a go in future projects though! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts Matt!
Same but plane. I know he said he wanted the more rustic look but planeing is so satisfying both to do and watch.
@jonnyengman6820 I agree! I would love to plane it if I had access to one, and add some rustic details afterwards. But unfortunately I didn’t have that at the time.
Hah, laughed out loud after he cut the 'inexpensive' wood with the Festool track saw.
Yeah, I can see the irony there haha! It’s not our tracksaw though, we borrowed that since we dont own one
Then cut the end by hand. Why?!?
We wanted a rough ”hand made look” to the table, thats why I cut it by hand :)
@@byferner fair enough. I was just expecting the Festool again...by hand caught me off guard. Haha
Haha I can imagine 😄
When staining pine, I'd recommend pre-staining and using gel stain to avoid streaks and splotches. Nice build.
Thanks a lot for the tip, I'll look into that when I buy new stain! Thanks!
People will hate but truly this is the absolute best way to stain pine because pine looks like crap in almost every other style. Great job with the distressed look. I’d actually pay for just the mood this table brings to an office space. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you so much my friend! I’m really glad you like it! I’m still using it as we speak. I’m exited to do a dining table too as soon as we find a house!
Thanks again for watching and the kind words!
Simply beautiful! I am planning to get a standing desk and i was surfing UA-cam to find some inspiration for the Top piece, I found everything i need in your video! congrats on the beautiful creation and truly Thank You!
That’s so kind of you! Thank you so much!
I’m really excited to hear you’re going to build your own table top! I wish you best of luck with your build my friend! If you don’t mind sharing your result, hit us up on instagram or Facebook, would love to see it! Thanks again for watching and the kind words!
Finally someone that uses simple tools :) Love it mate.
Love that simple thousand dollar track saw🤦
@@NANA-rn3cd Fair point, but you can do the same with a cheap one too :) It's not like others that demonstrate using table saws, jointers, planners etc
@@dimitris470 you r totally right
Really an excellent demonstration of how one can create quality furniture from some cheapish boards. Keep up the good work man!
Awesome video!! Just starting to work with wood, made a coffee table last week and am extremely satisfied with the end result. Now I will build this with your help!
Matt, that is awesome! Thank you so much, we’re thrilled to hear that, really appreciate it! Let us know how it turns out! Would love to see a photo of the results if you want to share it with us! Send us a dm on Instagram or FB :D Again, thanks a lot!
This is sweet! I made my first desk about a year ago and have become more experienced. My plan is to build a table top similar to this one in the next couple weeks! Great video production by the way.
That’s awesome! Keep us updated on how it turns out :D we would love to see some photos if you wanna share that with us on Instagram or FB! We can’t wait to build another one, we’re thinking about making our kitchen table as well! Too much fun! Best of luck with your build! Thanks again for watching and the kind comment!
@@byferner Cool, I'll do that!
The end result is just amazing! Very beautiful!
Im so glad to hear you like it! Thank you so much Chris, means a lot!
Instead of a thousand rolls of sand paper, a simple manual planer would make quick work of those raised edges with almost no saw dust and they are easy to use as well.
That is indeed true, thanks for the suggestion! Would love to own one or more of those one day. As for this time this was the option in hand since we don’t own a hand plainer and the rolls of sandpaper were the only thing we needed to buy. Thanks for watching and interacting, much appreciated 😀
Absolutely stunning!
Thank you! 🙏 Really appreciate it!
Beautiful work! Very inspiring
Personally would have used pocket holes along side wood glue. Would have helped true up the boards to one another and straightened some stubborn boards out. Also alternate your clamps on both sides of the workpiece when glueing up, tightening some more then others you can bring some boards out of warp.
That’s a good call Cody, we might actually try that for the next table. We plan on building a kitchen table later this year! Thanks a ton for the tips and thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts here in the comments, we really appreciate it!
I would also reccomend burning the wood before you stain. It will prevent toxic fumes. :) Best of luck. @@byferner
glue and THEN pocket hole?
"We went for pine since it´s cheap....but we got a Festool TSC55, which is around €650...." Good tools makes the build way more fun!
Thanks so much for sharing!I will try it too!!
My pleasure! Thank you so much for watching! 🙏 Awesome! Best of luck my friend!
Looks fantastic! yall did an amazing job! would love to try and make my own one day!
Thank you so much!
Wow! Great job and fantastic result!
Nice job! I'm building a similar desk this weekend and ran across your video doing some research. Thanks for the tips.
@@byferner I loved the bird too. Neat surprise midway through the video. Nice touch. Gave me a good laugh on a cold Louisiana morning. (40deg Fahr or 5deg Cel) I know, not very cold by your standards I'm sure! Ha.
Magnifique !! Beautiful desk !! Thanks for sharing your work ❤️👍🏾
How sweet of you to say that! It really means a lot to us, Thank you! ❤️ Our pleasure! Thanks again for watching and commenting!
The desk is awesome, the color differences looks natural 👍
Thanks a lot, that’s very kind of you! 😊
This turned out amazing! Great job. First thing I ever build was my own computer desk out of 2 pieces of plywood glues together. Both pieces of plywood were 3/4 of an inch thick. I used 2X4 boards for legs plus used cut 2X6 boards as an under frame. This happened during Covid-19 or the year of 2020
Thank you so much, Cole! That’s awesome, do you still use it?
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!
Yes @@byferner I still use it today 👍
@@colehalford1893 Sweet! 😃
Imponerande! Gillar allt från filmning, utförande och redigering! Kul att bi tog med lite "snedsteg" och visar att alla DIY-projekt inte bara går helt smärtfritt varje gång.
So need a large desk for working at home. Going to have a go now at building one thanks to your video. Cheers
Let us know if you build one, we would love to see it :D Thank you for watching Mike!
@@byferner I cheated a little after calculating how much the sander etc would cost, so bought a 2m oak worktop and distressed it, varnished it. Looks great on some tressle table legs. When I've more money I might actually buy the tools and do a dining table. Cheers 👍
That's why I use my domini XL XXL to straighten the boards in glueing. So it will hopefully will also help with tabletop twisting.
Nice rustic finish ;)
That sounds really convenient! I’d love to try a tool like that when edge gluing boards. Thanks for watching and for leaving some tips in the comments!
This is great and I enjoyed every second of watching this video. I am a carpenter/handyman myself and have recently been doing some research basically to gather some ideas on making a desk myself and this was very helpful. Great work, you have definitely gained a like and sub from me !!

Fantastic video editing not to mention great job on the table!
Nice job, looks great! Love the music and humerous editing too. 😊 I'm building a table/cabnet to mount a portable AC unit in my garage. This will be a great look.

Man that table looks beaut!!! Could definitely make a business in table building haha. Really like the flow of the vid and the info graphics are so cool!
I did something similar inspired by your video. Not with so much detail or expertise, but the result is a good looking (to my eyes) rustic pine wood table. So thank you for inspiring me. :)

I couldn’t agree more, and thank you!
I can’t wait to get my own dedicated space for it! But for now, I’m grateful for the shared little “workshop” we have available in our apartments basement.

I really enjoyed your sens of adventure and.... Of humour!
Thank you Dominique, I really appreciate that! We’re glad you enjoyed it!
This turned out beautifully!
Thank you so much Bill, really appreciate it! Thanks for watching :D
Beautiful build. My only tip for people who go w/ pine is to use extra padding between your monitor mount or anything that you plan on clamping to pinewood as it is susceptible to leaving indentations after long period of times being that this isn't as dense as hardwoods.
Thank you, glad you like it! That’s a great tip, I appreciate it!
Otroligt inspirerande 🤗
That's a beautiful desk! Better than anything at IKEA! I hope you both made passionate love on that desk before using it as an actual desk.
Thank you so much 😄 aye, IKEA better step up their game!
that turned out awesome... I'll be honest I had my doubts at the beginning, but you turned it into a great piece at the end, beautiful table!
I don’t blame you 😅 We really appreciate that Leo, that means a lot to us, thank you so so much! And thanks a lot for watching!

Quedó increíble, intentaré hacerlo éste fin de semana 😬
Muchas gracias, buena suerte! 😍
Beautiful work.. Made very simple
Thanks a lot! Glad you like it!
This is literally exactly what I'm looking for in a tabletop but I am not confident in my ability to create such a beautiful piece lol
You can do it! This was our very first tabletop, we had to figure out some things as we went on but it wasn’t too hard 😀 Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Feel free to a end us a dm on instagram and let us know how it goes if you decide to make your own!
Agree with what Veideway said. I did mine, it didn't turn out that great, but it is what I am looking for so it's definitely worth the effort. Having custom build things with your own hands, even not perfect, is so soothing.
Looks fantastic! I need to just build my own desk...
What did you use for the frame/legs?
I absolutely loved it
Thank you! 🙏
I love the table or desk look's awesome
Thanks a lot my friend!
Today that cost is doubled. 2x4 at hd in my area is almost $6. I end up getting a butcher block 72 inch for $110. Just needed some sanding and stain.
That’s unfortunate, if you wanted to build it yourself that is. I hope you’re happy with the results either way. Thank you so much for sharing, I’m sure others can find this information useful!
only $6? where i live “good quality” with this thickness plywood is $50-$100+ for both sheets and planks
Holy smokes :o
loved the result, nice job!
Thank you so much Daniel, glad you like it! 🙏
gotta love it when you see a woodworking video about using cheap construction lumber and they break out the festool track saw hahah so relatable.
Haha, to be fair it’s not my track saw. I should probably have mentioned that, it’s my father cutting it for us 😄
Very well done...............Muito bom trabalho.
Amazing work, looks so homy!
Thanks a lot, glad you like it! 🙏
Desk turned out great! And so did the video! Good job with both!
I’m going to build my own desk in the near future and I’m just getting ideas...
I’m considering a Shou Sugi ban technique to add character... but not much... the lumber I’m using is about 130 years old... worn and rustic... nail holes and scratches... I want to respect it’s age, while still making it usable as a desk.
Stain and paint is an interesting idea!
Thank you so much, we really appreciate it :D
Wow, that sounds amazing! Would you mind sharing the results with us once your done? We would love to see it! Gotta say I'm a bit jealous of the lumber you've come across, that sounds really beautiful!
Don't hesitate to send us a DM on Instagram and share the results with us! :D
Best of luck!
@@byferner thanks my friend! I’ll see what I can do... it might be a UA-cam project. But it’s likely going to be on top of a sit/stand desk I just acquired.
@@byferner As for wood, find an older neighborhood.. like turn of the century (20th) houses.. sometimes they get demo’d and the lumber is great... just be mindful of lead paint and asbestos, and... often it seems... it an be old growth lumber you’ll never find at the lumber yard!
Ps... do I hear a slight accent that isn’t from America?
That’s a great tip! Thank you, we’ll keep that in mind!
That’s correct, we’re from (and still in) Sweden :D
Oh, even better! Keep us updated! :D

Sooo beautiful😍
Love the finish
Thanks a ton!
Beautiful table and video, nice to see the learning progress you both went through, instead of the usual professionals doing their best work on UA-cam.
If you had the chance to redo this project, what would you do differently?
We really appreciate that John, thank you so much, so glad you enjoy it!
We would probably use some kind of joins (dowels/dominos/biscuits etc) if the boards were as bowed/twisted as they were, before gluing them together. Just to make it easier to stop them from moving around while we clamp them down. That way we probably wouldn’t have had to sand as much. We would probably try different techniques there, just for the fun if it, but we’re still really satisfied with how the table turned out!
If you care about the table being completely straight and don’t want to to bow or twist a little afterwards, you might also wanna insert some metal support beams or something. I think our table have bowed a tiny bit more since we built it, but not much. But like we said in the video, we don’t want the table to look perfect, so we really don’t mind that. I understand if that throws people off though, so keep that in mind!
Sorry for the super long reply John! I hope you care to read it all 😂 Have a good one and thanks again for watching and commenting!
@@byferner This is a great idea, as it would make the table more solid in general too. Yes, I can see your point on making the table as you did, it has a nice rustic feel. Even with the bow, for somewhat a beginner, that was an amazing job and deserves recognition. Truly amazing what information people can gather quickly nowadays thanks to the Internet. Your video may also be a source of inspiration for woodworking beginners.
I appreciate the length reply, hope to see more woodworking content from the both of you, have a good one 👍🏼

I'm making my pc desk too and i took the same steps same materials and even the same mistakes lol ...that was fun to watch
Haha, that’s hilarious! I wish you recorded it so I could see it too! 😄 You happy with it?
I'm sure a million people have said this by now, but sand with the grain, especially with the finer sandpaper, the final few sandings, or you will never get rid of scratches.
Thanks Colin, can’t be said enough either way! I learned that the hard way 😄 Thanks again for watching and sharing your tips my friend! Very much appreciated!

Honestly, this is great. You spent a lot of time making the table look really good at the end. It's a really rich look, like chocolate or coffee. I love it. Definitely a statement piece in a room.
I think people would buy furniture in this style. Some basic end tables, or living room tables. Or desks. Maybe a bed headboard. You should try selling a few :)
The only thing that would make this build better is incorporating the computer into the bottom of the desk. I'd also say Router/modem, and power bars.
When I built my desk, I was surprised that with just a bit of extra wood, and a few extra hours into it, I could hide everything inside the desk. It cleaned up the room massively. Depending on how your house is setup, I would recommend this if you kind of have everything in the same area around the desk. Really can tidy things up.
The only other tool I would recommend that you could get, that would make part of this a lot easier for you is a hand plane. You use it in place of the sander, and it'll help you get a nice flat surface much quicker. And if you can sharpen it well, smooth :)
Wow, thank you soo much my friend! What awesome feedback!
Yeah I’ve been thinking about selling furniture once I’m done with the ones we want for our place 😄
Incorporating the computer/router/cable management etc. has definitely been on my mind! Great ideas. A tidy work space and cable management is so satisfying!
A hand planer would be awesome, I can imagine that being really handy and make the process a lot faster!
Thanks a ton again for the kind feedback and for watching! 🙏

I would recommend a wax finish. Wax finishes with stains in the wax have thicker layers in cracks and light on flat areas. Then maybe some boiled linseed oil or maybe even shalack overtop
