The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It’s crazy to think that there’s some Elvis fans who never got to even see this because they died before the internet
Love him more than ever, and i'm 42 years old. 😅
I think its fair to say that any entertainer that has been dead longer than he was alive and nearly 50 years latter, millions still sing his songs, dance, smile, cry and people are still mesmerized by him: He isn't a once in a lifetime but a once in history.

Elvis was kinda like Eminem. Rock and roll was very much a thing before, but like with Eminem, what was once an art often performed by black artists and relegated to black audiences really broke out into the mainstream and became something EVERYONE listened to.
And like Eminem, Elvis was also actually very respectful when it came to crediting their influences and inspirations while doing well distinguish himself and his art. As far as the "stealing" of black music and exploitation of black art and artists goes, that falls squarely on the record labels.

THE KING !
The fact that we are in 2022 and I can look at this classic performance from the king himself and still be amazed is priceless.....
the fact that there is a year 2022 is already priceless
Watching this you can feel the electricity in the theater. He was an incredible talent. Its funny from our perspective now, that controversy-wise his performance was nothing compared with what ppl do onstage now. He was just being himself, feeling the music, and at the time, audiences had never seen anything like it. Ive seen the recent movie as well, its a shame the direction things went in later years for Elvis (to no small degree via Col Tom) but the gifts Elvis provided us will bever be forgotten!
Yes. He is truly in the groove of the moment and the music. So authentic and free. It's not just performing, it's a true expression of a life force along with the force of the music.

OMG!!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
This is why I love Elvis he sounds better live unlike most singers nowdays
That is because he could really sing....
People need to understand what this video represents. You are seeing the first superstar in history. The moves he was doing on stage had never been seen before on television. They were common in the south (where he was from) but conservative adults had never seen anything like this. It was exceptionally provocative. MANY church groups, parents, conservatives rallied together to boycott Elvis. They even had a class-action lawsuit against the Ed Sullivan show for broadcasting "such filth". This is the birth of rock and roll. You hear those girls screaming constantly. This is really the first time that had happened in history, especially for television. Some doo-wop singers were famous/handsome and the girls would get excited over them but Elvis was such a different story. He was such a disruptor in the 50's and singlehandedly changed the culture of the nation.
If I recall correctly The Ed Sullivan show was made aware of the dance moves that Elvis was going to do and the FCC or someone wanted a close camera angle on his upper body so the audience at home would not be able to see the dance moves. I believe the show ignored that and showed his entire body, which results in an FCC lawsuit. I could be wrong about the details but I recall there was significant controversy PRIOR to the show deciding to go with that camera angle.
You can see that up until @1:13 they stay with a close shot and they INTENTIONALLY slowly pull back and then Elvis does his moves.
Elvis also keeps laughing while singing because this fangirl thing was new to the world. He likely thought it was ridiculous how crazy they were going.
True But he was basically prevailed
Agreed on everything except the "birth of rock and roll" part. This song, for example, was originally recorded by a black woman, Big Mama Thorton, and then they brought it to Elvis. It was common for white artists to crib from black music in order to mass commercialize it. I would say this performance was the birth of the first true pop star, but Elvis should not get credit for the birth of rock and roll.
After this appearance, At his next appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show: They cleaned up his look to be 'more conservative' and filmed him from the waist up.
@@emightis pretty sure back then it was dems mas.
“They were common in the south” and “conservatives protested” dont make sense, aren’t southerners conservative?
It was his mission to make the audience go crazy
It was, he didn’t try in the start but then Colonel Tom Parker told him he to do it again so than he started trying.
And he accepted his goal

On the occasion of Elvis' very first appearance on Ed Sullivan, my brother and I were in bed asleep.

"Before Elvis there was nothing." -- John Lennon
I love his humor!!!! OMG It's so funny!!! I'm doing a research paper on "Hound Dog" and knowing its original version from Big Mama Thornton and Freddie Bell's to Elvis's, I just can't help but appreciate all these legends, especially Elvis for all that he did for Rock'n'Roll. Long live the King!!!!!
Elvis was the greatest.
Hi Maria,Truly how are you doing and were are you texting from?

His way of saying, “Stop fucking screaming, I’m here to sing you a song!”
